Disney+ Has Content Warnings About ‘Outdated Cultural Depictions,’ but Is It Enough?

Disney+ is all the rage at the moment, as the iconic entertainment company is now in the streaming game in a major way, releasing their archived films, old and new, for all to enjoy.

With the release of many of these older films comes a problem, though. Included in the description of some Disney+ films come warnings about possible “outdated cultural depictions” that some people may find offensive.

“Outdated cultural depictions” is kind of code for offensive, racist, misogynistic portrayals of minorities, women, etc.

Warner Bros. has done similar warnings before some of their cartoons. And if you’ve ever watched any of these old cartoons (or you grew up on them), you know that a lot of them contain imagery, themes, and scenes that definitely wouldn’t be acceptable in today’s environment.

And, as you can see, the warning on some Warner Bros. content is a little more forthcoming and honest as compared to just saying there might be some “outdated cultural depictions” in Disney classics such as Peter PanPocahontasThe Jungle Book, and Lady and the Tramp.

Some minority advocacy groups have spoken out about the Disney+ disclaimer. Azita Ghanizada, founder of MENA (Middle Eastern North African) Arts Advocacy Coalition, said, “I would hope that Disney would do it for all the films that might include some things that are a little outdated. Especially with Aladdin, with those orientalized tropes that we’re kind of pushing back against.”

But there are more recent concerns as well.

What about the depictions of Native Americans? And specifically, the decision to cast Johnny Depp as Tonto in The Lone Ranger?

Sonny Skyhawk, founder of American Indians in Film and Television, said, “We talked to people at Disney about that depiction … I said there are probably a hundred [Native] people of that caliber that can do that and yet you’re going to try and force Johnny Depp down our throat. That’s basically what they did and it’s the arrogance of Hollywood and the arrogance of Disney to say it’s our idea, it’s our money and we’re going to do it, whether you like it or not.”

What do you think about this? Is Disney going far enough with their warnings? Should these movies even be streaming for people to see?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

People Begging for Netflix Logins Can Be Very Entertaining

This trend of people borrowing each other’s passwords for Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO GO, etc. is pretty crazy.

It’s like a tangled web of networks and relationships that weaves through your friends, family, former boyfriends and girlfriends – and maybe even complete strangers.

And when people lose that privilege, they just come crawling back, don’t they? Here are some very entertaining photos of people begging for Netflix logins for your enjoyment.

Netflix to Start Releasing Weekly Episodes Instead of Dropping Whole Seasons at Once

Are you a Netflix binge-watcher? Well, this might not exactly be welcome news. For almost a decade, Netflix has released their shows all at once, meaning an entire season of a program would be dropped on the same day and viewers were able to watch an entire block of shows on an “opening day” of sorts.

I must admit, I did this with the new season of Mindhunter when it came out in August.

But not anymore, friends. Beginning in October, Netflix will not release all episodes of certain series at once. It will release numerous episodes on a weekly basis instead. With so much competition from other streaming services like Hulu, Amazon Prime, and Disney, Netflix might be changing their release schedules in an attempt to remain more relevant in the market and to create more value.

In other words, if Netflix doesn’t release the entire next season of Stranger Things all at once, the value of the series would probably go up in the public’s eyes.

Think about if HBO dropped an entire season of Game of Thrones or The Sopranos all in one day. Just wouldn’t be the same, would it? You’d lose those endless watercooler conversations about what next week will look like or who’s going to kill who down the road during a season.

So it does make sense that Netflix is going to at least attempt this model to see what happens. In October, Netflix will try the new experiment out by releasing The Great British Baking Show and Rhythm & Flow in this fashion.

Disney+ and Apple TV+ both start streaming in November, so we’ll see how this all plays out. Interesting times to be in the media world!

3. The Central Park Five (Amazon Prime)

4. Long Shot (Netflix)

5. Killing For Love (Hulu)

6. Brother’s Keeper (Netflix)

Acclaimed filmmakers Bruce Sinofsky and Joe Berlinger made this disturbing documentary about an elderly man accused of killing his ill brother in rural New York. Family secrets abound in this film.

7. Without Charity (Amazon Prime)

8. Gringo: The Dangerous Life of John McAfee (Netflix)

9. I Love You, Now Die (HBO)

Here’s How You Can Pay for Hulu and Netflix and Save Money Every Month

It’s pretty obvious that streaming TV shows and movies is becoming a preferred way of watching them and more services with more selection are coming on the market soon.

Photo Credit: Mike MacKenzie via Flickr, CC BY 2.0

But the services do cost some money. Fortunately, there’s a way to shave off a few dollars.

MoneyTalksNews writer Donna Freedman explains her hack for saving money on Netflix and Hulu if you pay for them through iTunes. Simply put, Costco sells iTunes gift cards at a 15 percent discount. If you use the gift card to pay for the services through iTunes, then BAM! You save on your streaming.

When your account depletes, just buy another gift card.

There are a few catches:

  1. The Costco discount on iTunes cards only happens a couple of times a year, so you have to stock up when you get the chance.
  2. Only existing users of Netflix through iTunes can pay through iTunes. New purchasers have to pay for Netflix directly through their portal which does not take iTunes gift cards as payment.
  3. If you aren’t a Costco member and you have no interest in becoming one, you will have to find iTunes cards at a discount through online gift card resellers or have a friend buy them on your behalf.
  4. If you aren’t paying for Hulu through iTunes, you will have to cancel and sign up again through iTunes.

Still, the savings are there if you are willing to do a little work. Depending on what city you’re in and the cost of living you have, this kind of hustle may be worth it – especially when rate hike time comes.
