Mark Hamill Granted a Teenage Boy His Dying Wish to Meet Luke Skywalker

This is a great story.

A teenage boy’s dying wish to meet Luke Skywalker came true, thanks to actor Mark Hamill.

Eight years ago, 17-year-old John Sikorra was terminally ill with Batten’s disease. A huge Star Wars fan, John desperately wanted to meet Luke Skywalker before he passed away. So his parents reached out to the only person they knew in the film industry for help, screenwriter Ed Solomon.

Ed shared the touching story of what happened next on Twitter.

Ed reached out to the agent of Mark Hamill, aka the real-life Luke Skywalker. Ed told the agent all about John’s dying wish.

“The agent begrudgingly said he’d call Mark, but also said not to get my hopes up. 90 seconds later I got a call from @HamillHimself, who immediately said yes and gave me his home address,” Ed wrote.

“He not only met with the boy, but spent hours answering question after question (sometimes the same ones repeatedly), AS ‘Luke.’”

Because of his state of mind, John’s short-term memory was faulty, and he couldn’t easily differentiate between “Hamill the person and Luke Skywalker the character.” But Mark was patient and kind with the young boy, according to John’s father Joe.

“It was one of those beautiful experiences,” Joe told The Hollywood Reporter. “It is very humbling, this disease. You have got to let go of your normal expectations for you and your kids and family. In the midst of struggle and tragedy, it was those points of connection that make you feel loved and less isolated. Mark was very kind, ‘No rush, my time is your time.’”

John passed away at just 23 years old in 2015. Years later, this story is still making people tear up. Rest in peace, John! May the force be with you.

The Darth Vader Hot Air Balloon Makes a Trip Back Home

According to Wikipedia, the 12 Star Wars films have totaled more than $9.323 billion in the box office…which is a lot.

So it comes as no surprise that someone created a Darth Vader hot air balloon. And it’s awesome.

As a part of the largest annual festival of hot air balloons, the Vader balloon made its way to Bristol International Balloon Fiesta that ran from Aug. 8-11.

Who cares? Glad you asked. While the Vader ballon has previously popped up all over the world, Bristol was one location it had never flown.

“The Darth Vader special shape hot air balloon was built in Bristol by Cameron Balloons but has never flown in this fine city. (We know!)”

In an effort to transport the Darkside, the festival committee started a crowdsourcing campaign, successfully raising over $6,300 to make this special event (even though the campaign is over, you can still donate in support of the festival itself).

This is particularly significant because Bristol is the birthplace of the man that played Darth Vader in Star Wars, David Prowse. Hint: Not James Earl Jones that did the voice, but the actual actor in the suit!

This was even hat-tipped by Luke Skywalker, himself, Mr. Mark Hamill.

Just awesome.

Sir Alec Guiness hated his role…

Sir Alec Guiness hated his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: “Apart from the money, I regret having embarked on the film,” calling the dialog “lamentable.” An autograph seeker told him he’d seen the movie over 100 times; he gave him an autograph on the condition he never see the movie again.

A 4-month-old Cinnamon bear…

A 4-month-old Cinnamon bear provided much of the voice of Chewbacca. Other Chewbacca noises were voiced by three other bears, a badger, a lion, a seal, and a walrus from Long Beach.

Twitter Thread Gives Us One More Reason to Love Star Wars Director Rian Johnson

Love or hate The Last Jedi, few can argue with the fact that director Rian Johnson has a unique vision and the ability to bring a fresh take on the science fiction genre to the screen. Which, if you love the genre, you have to appreciate – even if the end product is sometimes not for you.

Even better, it turns out that he is also a genuinely nice person who goes out of his way to treat strangers like human beings, so…bonus!

Check out this Twitter thread from Kumail Nanjiani, who encountered Johnson on a Comic Con red carpet the same day he realized how hard red carpet interviews are (totally true) and had already had a rough go.

Here’s what happened.

Doesn’t that just make you feel good about the world? You’re welcome!
