Behind-The-Scenes ‘Saturday Night Live’ Stories You’ve Never Heard

Saturday Night Live can be considered a cultural institution in the United States. Generations of people have grown up watching the weekend comedy hour, and a lot of people continue to watch it each week.

With a show that has been so popular for so long, it can be easy to assume that we know everything there is to know about the cast and crew, both of the past and the present.

But there are always secrets out there, even for a show’s most diehard fans.

Here 14 behind-the-scenes Saturday Night Live stories that even the show’s biggest fans haven’t heard yet.

1. Will Ferrell for a whole season

That’s right: funnyman Will Ferrell once wore the exact same outfit — jeans, a Western-style shirt, and a trucker hat — for an entire season of the show.

2. Seth Meyers used to get pranked.

Fred Armisen and Bill Hader used to have a favorite hobby: calling Seth Meyers in the middle of the night as a prank.

The pair would pretend they were the hosts of a radio show, and that they had accidentally given out Seth’s phone number on the air.

3. Bill Hader couldn’t handle Kate.

One of the big rules at SNL is that anyone who watches someone audition absolutely cannot laugh, no matter how funny they are.

The story goes that during Kate McKinnon’s audition, Bill Hader had to be removed from the room because he couldn’t stop cracking up.

4. Larry David once quit.

Larry David got so mad that his sketches didn’t make it to the show that he once stormed out of the studio and quit… but then came right back to work on Monday.

5. The season 27 wrap party was wild.

The writers threw a massive party that included a slip ‘n’ slide made up of spilled punch, and Horatio Sanz fractured his ribs while sliding!

6. They made bets about Paris Hilton.

Seth Meyers bet $1,000 that he’d be the first person Paris would ask a personal question of, but in the end, no one won the money.

7. Will Ferrell accidentally punched Ellen.

When Ellen DeGeneres hosted the show, Will accidentally punched her in the face while rehearsing!

8. Cheri Oteri almost missed her audition.

The SNL alum had terrible food poisoning the night before her audition, though she ended up making it.

9. Rachel Dratch threw out her back.

Rachel once threw out her back during a read-through, and Johnny Knoxville offered her a pile of miscellaneous pills that he pulled out of his pocket.

10. Male cast members were kind of gross.

It turns out that male cast members used to pee in cups and just… leave the cups around their offices.

In fact, Tina Fey explained that this appears to be the difference between male and female cast members of SNL.

11. Kate McKinnon put a hole in her wall.

The story goes like this: after finding out the SNL offices were being renovated and a wall would be torn down, Kate decided to dance around her office with a hammer.

She ended up knocking a big hole in the wall… and then found out they were just being painted, not torn down. Oops!

12. John Hamm helped out.

The night before John hosted the show, a heavily pregnant Amy received a call that her OBGYN had died of a heart attack.

When she burst into tears, no one knew what to do.

John sprang into action, telling her, “This is a really important show for me, I need you to get your shit together.”

Amy ended up laughing.

13. Barack Obama made a change.

Lorne Michael once cut a sketch from the show because a then-candidate Obama thought it was funny, but too much.

14. Dog food saved Eddie.

Nearly the entire cast was fired during Eddie Murphy’s first season, but he kept his job because the head writer, Michael O’Donoghue, thought that Eddie actually ate dog food on the air.

It turns out he ate hash instead, but he still had this job.

Aren’t those stories wild? Which one is your favorite?

Hilarious Times Things Went Wrong on “Saturday Night Live”

On Saturday Night Live, where improv is welcome and skits are rehearsed until the very last minute, it might seem obvious that things don’t always go as planned.

What’s amazing, though, is how often the skits that go “wrong” end up being the funniest, best-received ones of the night.

Here are 16 examples of things going wrong, but turning out hilariously right in the end, anyway.

16. I remember watching the Close Encounter sketch and laughing right along with Ryan Gosling.

He was trying and failing so hard.

15. After this second failure, I’m not sure he’ll be asked back for awhile.

Some actors just cannot handle the hilarity.

14. Will Ferrell pulled out the tiniest flip phone ever in Jeffrey’s.

Neither Sean Hayes or Jimmy Fallon could handle it. At all.

13. Even the famously stoic Kate McKinnon could not during this Weekend Update.

The meat apparently smelled really disgusting.

12. It’s not exactly hard to get Bill Hader to break, but Fred Armisen went the extra mile in Short Term Memory Loss Theater.

He improved the bit with the jacket.

11. Jimmy Fallon nearly ruined The Love-ahs with Barbara and Dave

Or did he? Because it might just be better this way.

10. Justin Timberlake had to go to his happy place to stop the laughter in The Barry Gibb Talk Show: Bee Gees Singers.

Just look at his face when he finally looks up.

9. Will Ferrell improvising his Harry Caray was too much for Jeff Goldblum.

We were all confused, but in a good way.

8. The More Cowbell sketch is a beautiful mess.

Jimmy Fallon is all of us.

7. Absolutely no one made it through Debbie Downer: Disney World.

Especially not me.

6. The actors in Cast List were getting creative attempting to hide their giggles.

Will Ferrell as a drama teacher was too much.

5. When Kristen Wiig almost ran Maya Rudolph over in Super Showcase Spokesmodels it was over.

For Bill Hader and the rest of us.

4. None of the actors could keep it together during the Californians sketch.

They were on the verge of breaking character the entire time.

3. Chris Farley was the King, and was super hilarious in Matt Foley: Van Down by the River.

Neither David Spade or Christina Applegate stood a chance.

2. Bill Hader ran Melissa Villasenor into the table during Girlfriend’s Game Night.

Not once, but twice. At least he could hide behind her and laugh.

1. Aidy Bryant’s overzealous wardrobe assistant threw a wrench into the works.

It was so unexpected no one could stop the laughter.

I love it! Behind the scenes stuff is the best at making me laugh.

Watch This ‘Saturday Night Live’ Skit About the Hell That Is Dressing Your Kids During Winter

Do you have young kiddos? If so, you know what an absolute treat it can be getting them dressed during the cold winter months! Lots of screaming, crying, fighting, and tantrum-throwing to liven up your long days!

And if you don’t have kids, you remember these days from your childhood, don’t you? I sure do. It was a constant battle between my mom and myself, no one willing to give an inch and back down. Good times!

Well, Saturday Night Live recently nailed this phenomenon in a hilarious fake Macy’s commercial about the trials and tribulations of trying to dress little kids during the winter.

The commercial starts off typically enough as a Christmas ad with happy families having a grand time.

…But then the whole thing starts to go downhill pretty quickly. The kids start to complain about various issues with their clothes. “It’s too hot!” “It itches!”

And the narrator tells us that “Tis the season for wrestling your wiggly little monster into thick winter clothes.”

Of course, there are winter clothes that won’t fit over any kid’s head.

And there are corduroys that will…well, you’ll see…

How Did Billie Eilish Stand on the Ceiling During Her ‘Saturday Night Live’ Performance?

If you’re familiar with Billie Eilish, you know she pushes interesting boundaries.

I’m not talking about sexual boundaries like Madonna or Lady Gaga, but more troubled, mysterious kinds of boundaries. And she was only 14 in 2015 when her first single, “Ocean Eyes,” dropped!

With her funky personal style and darkly twisted music, she’s become a phenomenon over the last three years. And honestly, there is no end in sight.

You may have caught her appearance on the opening episode of the new Saturday Night Live season, giving excellent performances of “Bad Boy” and “I Love You” (accompanied by her brother Finneas).

Did you miss her “Bad Boy?” performance? Well, she channeled Lionel Richie’s “Dancing on the Ceiling” and the audience went nuts.

Here’s a snippet to explain:

we on the walls n shit 🙃 @nbcsnl

A post shared by BILLIE EILISH (@billieeilish) on

How did she do it?

She must be a witch or something.

Not quite. Cinematic trickery was used to make it appear she could walk on walls.

Here’s how it was done! Justin Theroux, who was in the audience videoed his perspective.

See how the stage moves, allowing Billie to walk the wall?

The camera remained fastened on the initial plane while the stage itself spun. The TV audience wasn’t privy to the behind-the-scenes view, but the in house audience was.

Here’s the full performance to gawk over!

Pretty neat and very appropriate for this particular musical genius.

If you’re dying for more Billie Eilish, look her up—you won’t regret it!

“Shrill” Tackles the Truth About Plus-Sized Women and the Contraceptives That Doctors Keep Ignoring

I’m gonna possibly blow your mind right now: big gals have sex lives!

Yup, I know it’s hard to believe given the way they’re generally portrayed in the media, but plus-size women get it on just like the rest of us. That’s why Shrill, a new series on Hulu, is making such an impression with viewers everywhere – because it actually talks about the very real issues that plus-sized women have when it comes to their reproductive health.

The show quickly establishes that protagonist Annie (played by SNL‘s hilarious and talented Aidy Bryant) has an active sex life with a regular partner, Ryan. After one of their romantic dalliances, Ryan mentions that they didn’t use a condom – so Annie runs to the pharmacy to get a morning-after pill. A few months later, she starts to exhibit all the symptoms of… drumroll please… pregnancy!

That’s when the show hits Annie (and the rest of us) with a real doozy of a fact: emergency contraceptives such as Plan B are actually less effective on women who weigh over 175 lbs. What the what?!?

This is an aspect of contraceptives that’s not talked about very often, and considering that the average American woman weighs 166 lbs, that’s a scary thought! How do so few of us know about this?

Despite the fact that there are tons of studies that pointed to this link between weight and effectiveness of emergency contraceptives, there are still virtually no options for women who might be over that weight limit. This problem is made even worse by the fact that doctors tend not to listen to female patients as attentively in general. As a final insult to injury, plus-sized women must also fight the notion that any medical issue they have could just be solved by weight loss.

While the media has definitely made strides to include more plus-sized perspectives in recent years, we still have a long way to go. The fact that Shrill is taking on topics like sex, contraception, and (spoiler alert) abortion helps to open up a bigger dialogue about how to improve our quality of care for people of all shapes and sizes. Here’s hoping more networks take that ball and run with it.
