A scientific study found that starting high school one hour later than usual allowed students to sleep more than half an hour more, and was associated with reduced sleepiness and increased academic performance.
Teens Took Fake Babies Home for School Project, and Their Teacher Shared Their Desperate Text Messages
My brother had to do an assignment similar to this when he was in high school, and I believe his fake baby was broken by the second day. Sadly, he received an F for the project.
Bottom line: my brother was and still is very smart, obviously…
But let’s get to the story. At the Chippewa Secondary School in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, teen students got a little bit of a reality check when they had to take fake babies home and take care of them.
The teacher, Andrea Lefebvre, said, “Our students are in a grade 11 class called Raising Healthy Children. The students bring home one of the Real Care babies for the weekend to apply their learning for the caring for a newborn unit.”

This is so entertaining. Did you have to do this when you were in school? If so, how did it go?

This Mom Is Frustrated with School Photographers Offering to Photoshop Kids
Picture day at school is a tradition dating back to, well, probably since there were cameras and schools. Part of the charm for parents is getting a yearly photograph that reminds you of exactly what your child looks like from year-to-year.
The good, the bad, and the ugly, because we all go through those phases, my friends.
But now, with technology and everything, school photographers are offering to make your kid look like his or her best – but not necessarily true – self.
One mom, though, isn’t having it.
The girls have their school photo today and there is the option to AIRBRUSH the picture! There are two levels offered!! What the….?! Have complained! What 8 yr old needs to be paranoid about an “uneven skin tone” pic.twitter.com/6BGCx3FRZ9
— Sam Walker (@WalkerSam) October 28, 2019
What 8-year-old, Sam Walker asks, needs to be concerned about their tooth or skin color in a picture they didn’t want to take, anyway?
She spoke with Metro US to further explain her outrage.
“When you have a child who has some issues and so to suggest we can wipe that away you can look like everyone else is incredibly dangerous and very sad.”
Other parents, some of whom have children with skin conditions, agreed with her.
Teach him to love himself, he is living with it and it's going to be with him forever.
If he is having issues hiding it in photos isn't going to help him, you'll only teach him that there is something wrong with his skin.— Calliope Jackalope (@TLJackalope) October 28, 2019
This is appalling. My daughter has 9% full thickness burns and we have never attempted to hide her scars in photos. We just taught her that she is amazing as she is.
— Home Improvement Sales Network (@HISalesNetwork) October 28, 2019
The photographer in question hasn’t commented, though we can all assume that they offer those additional services because some extra mom somewhere requested them.
That said, let’s all agree that kids are kids, and kid’s photos should come complete with some form of this mom’s checklist:
My 4 year olds first ever school photo this month. This is also an option. I was gobsmacked then disgusted. Who photoshops school photos?
Lunch cardigan stain
Dishevelled hair
Face graze from fall at lunch timeThat makes it a school photo
— Kate (@ellasservant) October 28, 2019
Please. Kids have so little that’s pure – let them have the terrible images that will show up on their wedding video one day, I’m begging you.

Italy’s Schools Will Require That Children Learn About Climate Change Starting in 2020
It looks like Italy is taking a big step in the fight against global warming and climate change, and for that, we should be thankful…and we should hope that this kind of curriculum spreads across the globe.
Lorenzo Fioramonti is Italy’s education minister, and he is now requiring that, starting in September 2020, all children in his country will receive education about climate change. All students will be required to have 33 hours of lessons each year dedicated to climate change and environmental sustainability.
Italy will next year become the world's first country to make it compulsory for schoolchildren to study climate change and sustainable development, Education Minister Lorenzo Fioramonti said. https://t.co/ZZaLFvsxuX
— Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) November 7, 2019
Fioramonti also wants to eventually make climate change education part of math and geography curriculum so students will take sustainability into consideration when they study these subjects as well. The lessons will teach students the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and will be formed with help from environmental experts.
Fioramonti said, “The entire ministry is being changed to make sustainability and climate the centre of the education model. I want to make the Italian education system the first education system that puts the environment and society at the core of everything we learn in school.”
Italian school students in every grade will be required to study climate change and sustainability, in an attempt to position the country as a world leader in environmental education. https://t.co/Mbv63l13mj
— CNN (@CNN) November 7, 2019
Italy’s education minister also believes that older people need to educate themselves and play a role in this movement, so all citizens can work together toward sustainability. Fioramonti said he wants to “build a strong bridge between old and new generations around sustainable development as a social glue.”
An NPR poll found that 80% of American parents are in favor of their kids learning about the issue. Wouldn’t that be nice…?

Students Make Tampon Cookies for Their Principal After He Refuses to Put Tampons in the Bathrooms
Leave it to a man to do something this ridiculous regarding women’s health. At a middle school recently, some kids got pretty peeved when the (male) principal argued against putting a tampon machine in the restroom because the students would “abuse the privilege”…whatever that means.
So what did these obviously bright and crafty seventh graders decide to do? They held a protest and baked some tampon cookies.
My friend’s 7th grader goes to a school where the kids organized for free tampons in the bathroom. The male principle said no because they would “abuse the privilege.” The kids decided to stage a cookie protest. Behold the tampon cookies! pic.twitter.com/jz2KtbhOhS
— ilyse hogue (@ilyseh) October 30, 2019
People thought the protest was pretty amazing, and the responses came rolling in.
“Each generation is incorporating feminism into child-rearing more and more. Yesterday’s ‘you can be a doctor’ is now ‘you can be a doctor and you can demand tampons.”
“She and every girl in the school should rally together and agree that every. single. time. they need a tampon, they should bypass all other adults at school and go ask for one from the principal directly.”
“Maybe the girls should demonstrate that they are not taking advantage of free tampons by returning them to the principal when they are finished with them.”
Bravo, kids! https://t.co/Pbgvn6z7Jz
— MarkStarke (@StarkeMark) November 7, 2019
The girls who baked the cookies also released a statement under the name Revolutionary Girls’ Baking Society (this just keeps getting better) to update the world on what happened after the tweet went viral. The statement said, in part:
“After our cookie protest, our principal and the school board are now working to make sure every girl in our town will have the products they need readily available so no girl misses a day of school. We are very grateful that the school has taken our action seriously and is making a change. Feminine hygiene is not a luxury or a privilege, and not having tampons and pads is a barrier to every girl’s education.
Ours is a story of standing up with love and courage for our basic rights. Stand with us and work locally, nationally, and internationally to support the health and rights of all people. Check out Period.org or any of the hundreds of organizations working to ensure equal access to education for all.
Your actions can and do make a difference. We know, because ours did. If tampon cookies can spark a revolution, then the possibilities are endless!
Signed,
The Revolutionary Girls’ Baking Society, baking a difference one bizarre confection at a time.”

I just love this story so much!

A 4th-Grade Teacher Refused to Lie to His Students, so He Taught the True History of Christopher Columbus
This is an important story, so pay attention.
Nathanael Madden is a teacher at Cold Spring Elementary in Potomac, Maryland, and he has decided to take a different path when teaching his students about a very controversial historical figure.
Madden decided that he would teach the real history of Columbus and Columbus Day to his 4th-grade students, and his tweets about his student’s responses went viral.
Madden said about his decision,
“School is often a very confining and controlling place for kids, and I want to create a space for students to feel liberated by learning. I want all students to feel that they are free to be who they are and that they have a place of belonging in my classroom. This also means that we can’t ignore our world’s current realities, as well as how everything has been impacted by historical realities. Through my teaching, I constantly encourage and challenge my students to be critical questioners and critical thinkers so they can be active and informed participants in our world.”
My 4th grade students recently read of the true history of Columbus' career as a slaver and the genocide he began in the Caribbean.
I asked them: what new information did you learn? how did this affect you? why is this important to learn?
Here are some of their responses:— Nate ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (@thel0rdbyr0n) October 16, 2019
Madden shared a series of tweets in which he talked about how his students responded to his lessons laying out the “alternative history” that is not usually taught in public schools.
“I found out that the native people helped him, instead of thanking them, he wrote in his journal, he wrote about how he might enslave them and try to control them”
“Christopher Columbus wasn’t an explorer but a slave trader.”
— Nate ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (@thel0rdbyr0n) October 16, 2019
“Columbus never even set foot on the main continent! He didn’t discover anything anyway!”
“Colombus had been a slave trader for more than twelve years beforehand”
— Nate ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (@thel0rdbyr0n) October 16, 2019
“Because the indigenous people were wearing gold, he forced them to mine gold for him. When they did they not mine enough gold, they got their hands cut off and bled to death.”
— Nate ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (@thel0rdbyr0n) October 16, 2019
“Columbus killed them ,thinking that the Native Americans were beasts, but he himself actually was the one.”
“he would write down what he did as if he was proud of it.”
— Nate ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (@thel0rdbyr0n) October 16, 2019
“This hard history made me feel furious!!! A reason for this is that Columbus enslaved people and killed them! He has made me feel this fury!”
“I do not understand why there is a holiday for Columbus.”
— Nate ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (@thel0rdbyr0n) October 16, 2019
“I felt very mad, especially at My teacher for teaching me the wrong thing. I asked myself “why would my teachers tell me something that is pure lie?".”
“I feel betrayed because the teachers I had last year and the year before that had taught me that Columbus was a good guy.”
— Nate ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (@thel0rdbyr0n) October 16, 2019
“I feel sorrow”
“It must be sad for Indigenous people to see other people thinking Columbus is a hero”
“ It also made me feel mad at my country because of how badly they have treated those who were originally from here. They still deserve more attention.”
— Nate ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (@thel0rdbyr0n) October 16, 2019
“For so long, particularly in the US, the story of Columbus as a heroic explorer has been the dominant narrative, erasing and ignoring the voices of Indigenous peoples who have known the truth for centuries. As we grapple with the myths of American exceptionalism and start listening to the voices of different marginalized groups, we can uncover the truths of history.”
American public education has come a long way since I was in grade school; I don’t remember anything other than praise for Christopher Columbus around the time we celebrated Columbus Day at school.
The times, they are a-changing…and that’s a good thing.

A Man Paid off the Entire School Lunch Debt for 400 Kids in His Town
Children should never go hungry in the United States, but the sad fact is that it happens every day to thousands and thousands of kids. And sometimes we forget there are actually things we can do to help – but there are.
Andrew Levy, a real estate agent in Jupiter, Florida, decided to take things into his own hands after he saw a list detailing the outstanding lunch debt owed by 400 kids in 9 schools in his area.
The debt totaled $944.34, which is not so much, all things considered. Levy decided to pay the entire debt off for the kids and their families.
One man in Jupiter, Florida, decided that he could make a difference in his town by paying off the lunch debt for every child in the system.
Posted by 5NEWS on Monday, October 14, 2019
A woman in Jupiter named Angie Vyas-Knight got the ball rolling when she shared a post on Facebook talking about the school lunch issue and how kids were going hungry. She then got the local stats from the Palm Beach County school board and compiled a list outlining the debts. This list eventually reached Andrew Levy, who said, “I thought that’s crazy. Food is something you shouldn’t have to think about. Children shouldn’t learn hungry.”
After he paid off the debt, Levy started thinking about the issue in a bigger context. Levy realized that many more kids in his area, not just in Jupiter, need help paying for their school lunches. In fact, students in Palm Beach County, a district with more than 180,000 students, currently have an outstanding lunch debt of $50,000 .
Levy said, “I’m going to do either a GoFundMe page or a fundraising page that can raise money every quarter, so lunch debt never accumulates so that children never have to worry about a hot meal and parents never have to worry about paying the bill.”
If you want to help out, visit the district’s website to get more information.
KINDNESS: When South Florida resident Andrew Levy heard that more than 400 kids in his city couldn't afford their school lunches, he decided to pay off their debt. https://t.co/e5GCuB580E
— FOX 13 Tampa Bay (@FOX13News) October 12, 2019
Unfortunately, this is a major issue that many school districts have to address. We can only hope that more people like Andrew Levy will step up to the plate to help out the kids in need.
It’s called thinking BIG!
