When I was 8-years-old, I stayed home sick from school and was all alone in the house. My older brother had rented a movie the night before, so I decided to spend my sick day watching The Evil Dead…

Oh boy.

It totally traumatized me but also gave me a love for horror movies that continues to this day.

“It’s this movie from the late ’70s that no one’s ever heard of for some reason. It’s basically about a family rents a large estate one summer and a whole lot of weirdness goes down. It will mess you up for life.”

You’ve probably watched most of the classic horror movies that pop up around the Halloween season, but unless you’re a fanatic, you might have missed a bunch of lesser-known creepy movies that offer big scares.

Try these underrated horror movies on for size.

1. 1408 (2007)

“1408 is really good, and the theatrical ending is way better than the original. It’s such an underrated movie.”

2. Funny Games (2007)

“Funny Games should definitely be on this list! It’s so creepy and after seeing it, the sound of a golf ball dropping on a hardwood floor STILL gets to me.”

3. Absentia (2011)

“If you’re looking for low-key, atmospheric horror, here it is.”

4. Trick ‘r Treat (2007)

“I’m a huge horror movie fan, and when I saw Trick ‘r Treat I thought it would be a mediocre horror movie. But boy was I wrong, it’s brilliant! It has a campy feel to it but it was just as intense as most horror movies.”

5. The Evil Dead (1981)

“The Evil Dead is the best cult classic of horror. The effects are campy but creepy as hell and the next two in the trilogy take it to the next level. Seriously, Evil Dead is one of the only horror movies I can watch on repeat. Sam Raimi is a genius.”

“It flew way under the radar and was unfairly brushed off as a poor-man’s Cloverfield, but this is a must-see. This film is a good chronicle of two characters trying to survive something much bigger than themselves, and it really wins during the last half hour. It’s beautiful, scary, and surprisingly thought provoking.”

“The 1978 version with Donald Sutherland is the creepiest atmospheric sci-fi horror film I’ve ever seen!”

Mickey Rourke plays a 1950s private eye who is hired to track down a singer that disappeared in Times Square after World War II ended. A really creepy, atmospheric film that sees Rourke travel through the seedy underworld of New York and New Orleans.

There Are 42 Movie Adaptations of Stephen King Books. How Many Have You Seen?

Stephen King, “The Master of Horror”, just turned 72 years old the other day, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

I think it’s safe to say that Stephen King has had one of the best careers in the history of books. His first novel Carrie was published in 1974, and he’s been on a roll ever since.

A whopping 42 of his books, short stories, and novellas have been adapted for the big screen, and It Chapter Two just recently hit the big screen, adding another notch in King’s belt. And there are more adaptations in the works and coming soon.

15 Movies People Saw Too Young That Scarred Them for Life

Did you have a childhood movie that scared the hell out of you and you were WAY too young to watch at the time?

Mine? The original version of The Evil Dead from 1981. Gave me major nightmares.

But these 15 below are pretty brutal tiny soul-killers, too.

#15. I didn’t sleep for the entire summer.

“I snuck in to see The Exorcist when I was 12. I didn’t sleep for an entire summer. One morning, about 6am, a woodpecker or some bird got into our attic and was pecking and flying back and forth. I woke up my younger brother and sister, made them come with me to the attic door. I made them hold hands with me and say the Our Father. I was out of my mind.

#14. That’s what older brothers are for.

“Jeepers Creepers. But I think it’s mostly due to the fact that my older brother convinced me it was based on true events.”

Are you a horror movie nut? Frankly, I’m a big ol’ scaredy-cat but my wife really loves them so I’ve ended up seeing a few as well. The thing is, not all horror movies are created equally – some just rely on gimmicks and gore rather than actually cultivating a sense of dread in the viewer.

“Lake Mungo.

Shot like a documentary, and definitely one of the more realistic mockunentaries I’ve ever seen. It’s about a family in Australia who believe their house is being haunted by the presence of the recently deceased teenage daughter. Since it’s meant to be realistic, the entire film kind of focuses on the idea that spirits aren’t real. That’s all I’ll say about the plot.

It’s been about two years since I first (and last) seen it and it has certainly stuck with me. I think about it often.”

The movie was filmed in the actual catacombs, and the effects are really good. Plus there is a psycological aspect to the haunting that occurs, particularly amongst the more guilty of the group. Would recommend.

There are jump scares, but they are legitimate.”
