Russia Has Some Crazy Weather and This Account Proves It

I was lucky enough to visit Russia back in 2003. It was fascinating, frustrating, and I really took in all the country had to offer because I knew that was probably a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Also, IT WAS IN FEBRUARY. IN RUSSIA.

So, as you can probably imagine, it was freezing, there was ice on the ground everywhere, and we had to keep an eye out for enormous icicles that fell from rooftops when we walked around (seriously).

Bottom line: Russia has some crazy weather. And this Twitter account shares all the good stuff so those of us who live on the other side of the planet can keep up with what’s going on over there.

Let’s take a look!

1. Ugh. No thank you.

You probably can’t drive that thing for a few days…at least.

2. Get a load of the ice flowers.

They are very pretty!

3. Wow! These photos don’t even look real.

Also, I didn’t know they had volcanoes in Russia.

4. One huge thunderstorm.

Perfect timing on this shot.

5. Behold the sun halo.

Have you ever seen one of these?

6. The biggest hail I’ve ever laid my eyes on.

Can’t imagine the damage it did.

7. The world is on fire.

Look at the colors!

8. Those are really beautiful.

They sort of look like bomb blasts.

9. A stormy night.

Good timing on the photos.

10. Buried by snow.

This just looks miserable.

11. And back to the pretty stuff.

I guess these make the snow more bearable.

Well, that was weird…

How about you?

Account Shares the Strange Weather That Russia Experiences

If you live in Louisiana or Oklahoma or some other place, you might think that you deal with the most extreme weather on the planet.

But I think that Russia might have those places and a bunch of other spots on the globe beat when it comes to crazy weather events.

Russia is absolutely enormous, so its people deal with every kind of climate imaginable…and, by the looks of the photos you’re about to see, it gets pretty wild over there.

Let’s see what’s going on weather-wise on the far side of the world.

1. Whoa! A waterspout!

You don’t see that every day.

2. The electric sky.

Be careful out there…

3. Have you ever seen such a thing?

I’ve never even heard of a Sun Halo.

4. It’s really coming down!

That doesn’t look like much fun.

5. Freezing rain all over the place.

I bet this was not fun to deal with.

6. Now that is cold!

Everyone is better off just staying inside.

7. Have you ever seen The Thing?

This reminds me of that movie.

8. That is very beautiful.

That might even be alarming to see that in the sky.

9. This is pretty cool.

A perfect ice circle.

10. Here it comes!

You better take cover!

11. Extreme blizzard conditions.

So glad I don’t have to deal with this kind of weather.

Now we want to hear from you out there.

Have you ever been to Russia before?

If so, what did you think of it? Talk to us in the comments!

This Social Media Account Shares the Weirdest Weather in Russia

I can think of few places I’d rather NOT be during the winter than Russia.

Just thinking about the word “Siberia” makes my feet cold.

And when you look at photos of everyday Russian people, a lot of them look pretty…well, not incredibly happy all the time. And I think at least some of that has to do with the crazy and terrible weather those folks deal with year in and year out.

I don’t have any scientific data to back this up, it’s just my hunch…

Let’s take a look at photos of some wild weather that’s going on over in Russia.

1. Magical light pillars.

I’ve never seen something like that before.

2. How about some Lenticular clouds.

Look! Up in the sky!

3. Get a load of these frost flowers.

They’re actually very beautiful.

4. The geometry of frost.

That looks like plastic. Doesn’t look real.

5. A complex sun halo.

Cool! I need to read up on these!

6. They have volcanoes in Russia?

I had no idea!

7. That just looks like a nightmare.

How do you even begin to get the ice off?

8. Beautiful light pillars.

I wonder what causes these?

9. That’s pretty scary!

I’ve heard this happens from time to time.

10. Looks like something you might see in the Midwest.

There’s a twister coming!

11. It’s very pretty, isn’t it?

Feels like you’re at the end of the world.

12. That is stunning!

I love it!

Crazy Photos of Bizarre Sea Creatures Caught by a Russian Fisherman

Roman Fedortsov, a Russian deep-sea fisherman, terrified and enthralled the world with his instagrams of the bizarre sea creatures he pulls from the depths of the ocean floor.

I think we’re all at least a little bit afraid of what lurks in the ocean, but these animals/aliens are SCARY. Take a look below and see for yourself.

Cows in Russia Are Wearing Virtual Reality Headsets Showing ‘Summer Fields’ to Combat Their Winter Depression

In Russia, cows are getting a new tool to help fight the winter blues that a lot of us deal with. A dairy farm in that country is outfitting its cows with virtual reality headsets to help the animals tone down their anxiety and to fight their winter depression. The moooooove (see what I did there?) is also intended to boost milk production from the farm animals.

The headsets display green fields and pastures to the cows in order to make them feel more relaxed. The project is taking place at RusMoloko farm, outside of Moscow.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Moscow Region said that the virtual reality headsets have achieved “a decrease in anxiety and an increase in the overall emotional mood of the herd.”

The plan is to monitor the cows wearing the headsets to see if their milk production increases throughout the winter. The ministry said that “technology improvements should impact the industry as a whole.”

In addition to the look of green fields and pastures, the developers of the virtual reality headsets gave the design a predominantly red color scheme because studies have shown that cows see red better than other colors of the spectrum.

Is this the wave of the future in farming? Will the results show that the impact of these VR headsets is positive among the cattle and this technology become commonplace for animals?

Time will tell…

But I think I might need to get my hands on one of these for myself this winter.

This Artist’s Embroidery Pieces Look like Paintings

A Russian artist named Vera Shimunia makes embroidery landscape scenes that are so impressive, they almost look like paintings. She said that it took her a while to put her work online, but the feedback was almost immediately positive. She said, “I started to publish my embroidery experiments in Instagram and people start to write me, ‘can I buy it?’ And I thought – why not.”

Check out the Gorgeous Subways of the Former Soviet Union

I visited Russia for ten days in 2003, and it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Standing in Red Square, walking around Saint Petersburg, it was truly incredible.

One thing I noticed was how elaborate and beautiful some of the subway stations were in Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The Soviets built incredible subway and train stations (some of them very far below ground). During the peak years in the Soviet Union, only 30 out of 1,000 citizens owned cars, so it was imperative to have a top-notch subway public transit system.

Even the more modern stations are pretty breathtaking. It’s a matter of priorities.

Here are some of the best.

1. Chernaya Rechka (Black River), Saint Petersburg.

??? My nearest underground station

Famous Russian Photographer Abandons Her Career to Live in the Forest with 100 Sick Dogs

Daria Pushkareva was one of the most sought-after wedding photographers in Moscow, regularly shooting the nuptials of Russia’s elite businesspeople and politicians, but her workaholic lifestyle left her exhausted. She had previously worked in the film industry. She said,

“I became a photographer because I wanted to reduce the intensity of my life. I invested all of my money into photo equipment and master classes to perfect my skills. But ended up in the same place. No vacations, simply not giving myself neither the rest nor the holidays I so desperately needed. I shut myself away at work and the only joy I had came from producing impressive photos. I realized that I was a workaholic, always preferring doing or creating something to any form of relaxation.”

She continued,

“I then remembered my childhood when I and my classmates were talking about future professions and I said that I wanted to run a dog shelter. One day, I saw a piece about a shelter puppy without an eye. It needed 10K rubles ($150) to book a visit to the ophthalmologist. I met a volunteer to give her the money for the dog’s treatment in person and she told me, “Thank you, but we can’t take her to the vet. There’s no one to do it right now.”

“I was there with my husband. We exchanged a few glances and I said ‘We might as well do it ourselves.’ At that point, everything became clear and simple. The owner of the shelter came and placed the flea-bitten furball onto my lap while I was sitting in the car. I looked at her asking, ‘Is this a puppy?’”

Pushkareva and her husband started rescuing one dog after another, some in terrible condition. After a while, they took out two loans, bought a house in the country, 100 miles from Moscow, and built enclosures for their rescue dogs. Pushkareva and her husband had a new life and a new purpose.

She said,

“I wouldn’t consider our household a shelter. In fact, I even feel offended if someone calls it like that. A shelter is a place where new volunteers and other people contribute to the wellbeing of the animals that are constantly moving in and out. We, on the other hand, have our own dogs, we love them and devote our lives to them. To us, they are family members. They’ll remain with us forever and we do not want to give them away to anyone.”

In addition to the rescue dogs, the couple also takes care of foxes and raccoons.
