10 Totally Wild Facts About the Late, Great Steve Irwin

Steve Irwin, otherwise known as ‘The Crocodile Hunter’, was an integral part of my childhood. His love of animals was absolutely infectious, helping him become one of the most famous television stars in the world. Sadly, his life was cut short after a stingray pierced his chest while he was filming the documentary, Ocean’s Deadliest.

Below are 10 facts about the man himself that just might surprise you!

#1. He was terrified of parrots.

You might think he wasn’t afraid of any member of the animal kingdom, but he admitted that wasn’t true.

“The only animals I’m not comfortable with are parrots, but I’m learning as I go. I’m getting better and better at ’em. I really am … For some reason parrots have to bite me. That’s their job. I don’t know why that is.”

#2. He also met his wife, Terri, at a zoo.

His entire family, including his wife Terri, played important roles in The Crocodile Hunter. Terri’s love for animals also began at a young age – she opened Cougar Country in 1986, a facility that helped rehabilitate foxes, raccoons, bobcats, bears, and cougars before releasing them back into the Oregon wild.

She made a trip to the Australia Zoo in 1991 and saw Steve Irwin for the first time – and it was love at first sight.

#3. His life’s goal was to increase people’s knowledge about conservationism.

People might have watched The Crocodile Hunter to catch Steve’s zany antics and check out cool animals, but Irwin’s goal was to educate the public and dispel myths that put the animals in danger.

“I’ve always seen Jaques Cousteau as a hero,” he said. “He’s a legend, like my dad, just a legend. And so what he did for conservation in the 60s and through the 70s was just phenomenal. And I was to be just like him, you know? I want to have a milestone, you know? I want to create history.”

#4. He was bitten often, and realized it made for good television.

Irwin knew he took the chance of one of his animals objecting to being put on display, and he also knew it was one of the reasons people tuned in.

“Now and again I do get bitten,” he told ABC Australia. “And it’s that, you know, that sense of morbidity that people do have. There’s no use sticking your head in the sand and going, ‘Oh, no, they’re only here because, you know, I talk well.’ Nah, man, they wanna see me come unglued.”

#5. He grew up at a zoo.

His family moved to Beerwah, near Queensland, in Australia and opened the Beerwah Reptile Park in 1970 and Steve spent his formative years helping feed the animals before eventually taking over as the owner. It’s still in operation as the Australia Zoo.

He told Larry King “My dad was a wildlife expert. His field was herpetology, one who studies reptiles, and my mom was a wildlife rehabilitator.”

#6. Both kids are following in their dad’s footsteps.

Bindi Irwin had her own Discovery Kids series called Bindi the Jungle Girl and starred with her brother on Growing Up Wild for The Pet Collective YouTube channel. In 2015 she won the 21st season of Dancing with the Stars and captured hearts all over America.

Bob Irwin is now 15 and stars with his mom and sister in Steve Irwin’s Wildlife Warriors and co-hosted Wild But True on Discovery Kids. In 2017 he appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, introducing the host and audience to a handful of animals.

#7. They filmed the first episode of The Crocodile Hunter on their honeymoon.

Their honeymoon was spent traveling around Australia trapping crocodiles for relocation (because of course it was). She told the story of how The Crocodile Hunter was born during an interview with Scientific American.

“We dropped our honeymoon, we went to north Queensland, and we helped this crocodile and filmed a documentary on the premise that the cameraman just chases Steve around. Steve hadn’t been to acting school, he had no preconceived notions. His background was exactly what you see on television, he’s done that all his life. We thought we’d do one show. What happened was, it did really well, so we did a part two. And from then on, we found that Steve’s natural behavior in the wild happens to be fascinating!”

Irwin’s natural enthusiasm, of course, turned out to be what made his show an immediate success.

#8. He discovered a new species of turtle.

It was an accident – he caught it on a fishing trip and realized he’d never seen another turtle like it. They sent the pictures to herpetologist John Cann who confirmed they’d found something brand new – the species is called Elseya irwini (Irwin’s snapping turtle).

You can see one at Baltimore’s National Aquarium if you’re not traveling to Australia anytime soon.

#9. His show was popular around the world.

The Crocodile Hunter was a huge hit in America and Australia, but the series was seen and loved by hundreds of millions in 130 different countries.

#10. There’s a snail named after his famous catchphrase.

“Crikey!” It’s the phrase everyone associates with Steve Irwin, and in 2009, Dr. John Stanisic discovered a tree snail that he named accordingly – the crikey steveirwini.

He told ABC Australia that it was “a colorful snail, with swirling bands of creamy yellow, orange-brown and chocolate giving the shell an overall khaki appearance.”

His legacy, I’m sure, is in good hands.

Jack Black Accidentally Became a Real-Life Version of the “Distracted Boyfriend” Meme

Jack Black is a man of many talents. Actor, comedian, musician, singer, and YouTube vlogger are just a few of his accomplishments. Now, he can add “meme” to his resume.

The actor accidentally recreated the famous “Distracted Boyfriend” meme while he was walking around Atlanta (where he’s currently shooting the next Jumanji movie). As he was filming a segment for his YouTube channel, he walked by a couple holding hands, causing the boyfriend to do a double take.

The original “Distracted Boyfriend” meme has been around for a while now, showing a man checking out another girl while walking with his girlfriend.

Undoubtedly, the man in this version was undoubtedly thinking “Holy s***, is that Jack Black?!?”

While the “Distracted Boyfriend” meme has plenty of remixes, the fact that it was accidentally recreated so perfectly naturally caught a lot of attention online.

As a matter of fact, people have even made new remixes featuring the Jack Black version:

What a lovely Tribute.

Mom Posts Warning to Parents After Finding Suicide Content on a Child YouTube Channel

One of the biggest challenges of modern parenting is keeping your kids safe from things they shouldn’t see online. While limiting screen time, setting up filters, and restricting certain channels entirely helps, the fact of the matter is that it’s an uphill battle against the endless amount of content out there. That’s why parents are always on the lookout for any new app or feature that might help them out.

But, as one mom discovered, even those aren’t foolproof. Even on YouTube Kids, which claims to provide a safe and simple place for kids to explore the world through online videos. Meridy Leeper posted about her family’s recent horrifying experience.

Leeper worried if she should post about the video or not, then decided against staying silent.

This is an exceptionally hard thing for me to post. I’ve thought long and hard about this. I’ve decided it’s way too important not to bring awareness to other parents. This is not up for criticism. I only want to let all parents know what to watch for….

She shares her shock at what she found on her daughter’s “safe and simple” video site.

Kids youtube, roblox, fortnight… no matter how much you think you are monitoring your child.. notifications to what your child is watching. It doesn’t matter. My 7 year old child was taught how to attempt suicide by kids youtube and these games. She has expressed that she doesn’t feel neglected or unloved. Instead, she was constantly told to ‘go kill yourself’ by other gamers, by kids youtube. Shown HOW to.

Leeper also shared a drawing of a figure in a dress, with a downturned mouth, at the end of a noose.

Leeper’s daughter drew it the day after she had a severe anxiety attack triggered by a video.

Sunday night, she had a full blown anxiety attack. Which I held her and sang to her while she got through it. Monday, she drew this in school.
This is a VERY real danger! I NEVER thought I would find myself helping my SEVEN YEAR OLD CHILD through an anxiety attack.

Parent to parent, Leeper writes a warning that even kid friendly websites can show harmful material.

PLEASE, keep your children away from these things. I’m just so glad my child was able to express her feelings before she actually tried to harm herself. I never thought something as ‘innocent’ as kids youtube would have these subliminal messages. Again, I’m only sharing our experience in the hopes to prevent another child going through this.

After her post was shared several hundred thousand times in less than 10 days, Leeper posted the actual video.

Leeper writes:

Several concerned parents have asked (rightly so) which videos my daughter watched on kids youtube that prompted her suicidal thoughts. There are several in the comments of my original post… but this is the very one that gave her the idea of hanging herself.

As she mentioned in her original post, the video looks like it’s for kids, yet contains images of violence and self-harm.

At 1:56 minutes in there is scene of the girl using a butcher knife aggressively on a cake. At 2:21 minutes in, is the build up to the hanging/suicide scene. This video starts out very cutsie and catchy… then turns very dark. I’m putting this out there so parents can be aware to keep thier kids away from the ‘doki doki’ videos that promote self harm and suicide. Here ya go….

Many commenters said the video in question is hosted on YouTube with a warning page and that parents are responsible for supervising their children’s online activity.

The video starts with a notice. “Warning: This video contains references suicide, self harm, and domestic abuse, if this kind of thing makes you uncomfortable, please don’t watch this video. Viewer discretion is advised.”

But can a child who sees a little cartoon girl with ribbons and hearts in her hair understand this warning? And would it keep her from watching it anyway and being exposed to violence and despair?

It looks so innocent.

15 Married People Share The Quirks Partner Has That Aren’t Cute Anymore

When you first start dating someone, your passions are aflame and everything your significant other does seems so adorable. The way they sneeze, the way they hang their towels, the way they place certain items.

Once you start settling in for the long haul, however, those quirks start getting a little less endearing. Suddenly, the fact that they always wake up grumpy isn’t cute – it starts looking like grounds for murder.

Here are 15 awesome examples.

#1. Minecraft mistakes.

“She doesn’t take precautions playing Minecraft. It was funny seeing her wooden house burn down, or her losing all her stuff digging straight down.

But since I ran the server, she would keep asking me to go to use my admin powers to get it all back. A lot.

She also still sends settlers unescorted in Civ V (I just triggered all civ players, sorry). Other than that she is still perfect after 10 years :D”

#2. Get to the verb.

“He can not tell a story. Rambling, unnecessary details, and the listener is three steps ahead the entire time, just waiting for it to slowly unspool.”

#3. Forgetfulness.

“His forgetfulness used to be cute and fun. Waking up to fresh gallons of milk sitting on the counter for hours is annoying as fuck now.”

#4. Hair.

“Her hair. She has such long, beautiful hair, but it gets everywhere. Drains. Sinks. Carpets. I’ve had to sit and cut hairs out of the vacuum so it would work again because it had tied up the roly bit. Not to mention I’ve had her hair on me and all through my clothing.”

#5. A bag of magic beans.

“His spontaneity.

It used to be really fun and sexy…but now it’s like living with a real life Homer Simpson/Phil Dunphy hybrid.

No joke, I am just waiting for the day he comes home with a bag of ‘magic beans’.

Edit: I’ve had a lot people asking for more stories of my husband doing crazy shit.

I think my favorite is: on our first date we got caught in a rain storm. I was wet to the bone and wearing a skirt…so he offered me his pants.”

#6. My way’s better.

“First off, still very happily married and in love! However, there is one thing that does cause a ruckus every now and again. When we were dating and living together, we would do diy stuff around the house. I know a little past the basics because my dad made sure to teach me things and of course there is always youtube, so I’m not helpless by any stretch. In fact I owned several of my own power tools before we got together.

When doing one of these projects, he often wouldn’t let me do much. Back then I thought, “What a gentleman, doesn’t want me to get dirty.” or whatever. Nowadays I’ll be watching him do something and know a better way of doing said task, and it’s like he doesn’t believe me. So he’ll try 18 other ways before landing on the way I suggested and it working out just dandy. It’s pretty frustrating. I can do more than hold something while you work!

It’s not a deal breaker, but sometimes I let him know just how stupid he was acting, and how much time it wasted by not just trying my way first. Even if my suggestion doesn’t work, what did you lose?”

#7. Slow eater.

“Takes forever to eat a meal. It was very well-suited to long dates, romantic dinners, those intense getting-to-know-you conversations at the beginning. 15 years later and I just want to have a meal where I’m not done before he’s barely taken a bite!

His whole family is like this and I simply don’t understand. It’s food, you put it on a plate and you eat it and go on with life! Not for them, mealtimes often stretch on for hours, occasionally into the next bloody meal if it’s a family event. I just don’t get it.”

#8. NOW?

“My husband always tries to make me laugh. I honestly hope he never stops trying, but there are times when it’s like “really?? You’re trying to make me laugh NOW?!”

#9. Some pedantic loophole.

“Debate with me. At the beginning it was great because I felt like I met my intellectual equal. Now I realize she’s just a disagreeable person. I’m 90% sure if I told her the sky was blue, she would find a way to dispute my assertion with some pendantic loophole

EDIT: ok people, it feels like half of these responses came from my wife. I just double checked out the window, the sky is definitely blue. Do you want to know what shade of blue? SKY BLUE!! Explaining WHY it’s blue doesn’t make it not blue. Baaaah!!”

#10. More than me.

“Not married, but engaged and have been together for almost 5 years now? Everyone likes her. She’s a very likable person, but my friends and family like her more than me. Just gets to me sometimes when she tells me something about a friend or family member that I should have heard from them.”

#11. A choral piece.

“Her having to sing everything like it’s a perfected choral piece.”

#12. He needed me.

“In the beginning he used to really need me and he always required a LOT of attention.

I loved it, at first.

I loved to feel needed and I 100% absolutely loved to lavish him with my adoring attention endlessly…

I was absolutely devoted.

Fast forward 15 years…

I feel used up and taken for granted.

He has never reciprocated, our relationship has always been strongly one way.

His behaviour was exactly what I wanted and needed – at one point.

Now it’s just something that upsets me. A lot.”

#13. Bathroom stalking.

“Constantly watching me in the bathroom. It was fun at first, we always make/made jokes. But now there are times I just want to be left alone to shit for fucks sake.”

#14. Clumsy

“Clumsily break things accidentally. It’d be a teaspoon one day or a shoelace the next. Little insignificant, ‘how-on-earth-did-you-manage-to-break-that?’ type of things. Started out quite cute and amusing. Now it’s a case of ‘Babe, that’s like the fourth vacuum cleaner this year, and it’s a fucking Dyson.’”

#15. What’s for dinner?

“Her indecisiveness. It was adorable to see her struggle when we were dating but goddammit I’m just trying to figure out what to make for dinner.”

5 Popular Love Songs That Aren’t Acually Romantic At All

Ah, to be young and in love. Isn’t it great when you hear a love song and the lyrics just seem to describe your feelings perfectly? There’s nothing better!

Well… you may wanna change your mind about cranking the volume too hard on these 5 tunes, because even though most people think they’re romantic, the truth is that they’re just… not.

#1. “Leaving on a Jet Plane” by John Denver

Setting aside the fact that Denver, you know…died on a jet plane, the song was never meant to be a love song. Instead, Denver penned a heartfelt farewell from an unfaithful lover.

And who wants that person to come back, really?

#2. “Always” by Bon Jovi

It starts out all mushy, talking about how the singer will “love you, always” but takes a quick turn into the tragic with lyrics about the bleeding, abandoned heart of a man left behind when his lover moved on with someone else.

#3. “More Than Words” by Extreme

It sounds like a song about telling someone you love them, but singer-songwriter Nuno Bettencourt is quick to point out that it’s actually about how words can’t fix everything, and that “I love you” so often isn’t enough.

“People use it so easily and so lightly that they think you can say that and fix everything, or you can say that and everything’s OK.”

#4. “Here Comes Your Man” by The Pixies

This isn’t a cutesy romance song, like the twanging and purrs would suggest – it’s actually “about winos and hobos traveling on the trains, who die in the California Earthquake,” explained frontman Black Francis back in 1989.

Sexy.

#5. “Got to Get You Into My Life” by The Beatles

You might not believe it, coming from the wholesome Beatles, but Paul McCartney said that fooling “square” parents was the point.

Because the song? Sir Paul said “it’s actually an ode to pot.”

There are plenty of real love songs out there, so I’m sure it won’t take you long to find some great replacements!
