Alan Rickman’s Personal Letters Reveal He Had Some Mixed Feelings About Playing Snape

Moviegoers, co-workers, directors, and everyone enjoyed the time they spent working with Alan Rickman, watching him, or just being around him. But just because he was so well-liked doesn’t mean he had a complex personal life. Actors are emotional beings, and Rickman was no different.

Thanks to some of his personal letters coming up for auction, we’ve gotten a glimpse into his complicated feelings about playing one of his most well-known roles.

The collection of letters, which are part of an auction at the ABA Rare Book Fair, seem to indicate the actor struggled with how the film franchise’s directors were handling his character, beginning as early as A Chamber of Secrets, the second installment in the Harry Potter franchise.

One letter from producer David Heyman told Rickman “Thank you for making HP2 a success. I know, at times, you are frustrated but please know that you are an integral part of the films. And you are brilliant.”

Later, after filming Half-Blood Prince (the sixth film), Rickman wrote a note, titled “Inside Snape’s Head,” that seemed to indicate he was unhappy with choices made by director David Yates.

“It’s as if David Yates has decided that this is not important in the scheme of things i.e. teen audience appeal.”

He’s clearly frustrated, but about what, exactly, we may never know.

The collection does include happy notes, as well, like one from author J.K. Rowling thanking Rickman for “doing justice to my most complex character,” and one from Daniel Radcliffe, who idolized Rickman (rightfully so).

“To Alan, Thank you for all of my presents, I can’t wait to read Catcher in the Rye.”

The entire collection includes 35 boxes of diaries, photos, scripts, and other personal effects like notes from Prince Charles, Tony Blair, and Bill Clinton.

If you want to bid on it, you’d better have deep pockets – they’re expecting the whole thing to go for over $1.2 million.

Period Trackers Used by Millions of Women Are Sharing Your Sensitive Data with Facebook

A new research study showed that period tracking apps, including MIA Fem and Maya, have sent your personal information to Facebook. This not only includes when you’re on your period, but the type of contraception you use, how often you are having sex, and any PMS symptoms like mood swings.

When does the invasion of privacy stop?

Buzzfeed news explains:

“The data sharing with Facebook happens via Facebook’s Software Development Kit (SDK), which helps app developers incorporate particular features and collect user data so Facebook can show them targeted ads, among other functions. When a user puts personal information into an app, that information may also be sent by the SDK to Facebook.”

Great. So they know about your period because – you guessed it –advertising.

“Advertisers are often interested in people’s moods because it helps them strategically target ads to them at times they might be more likely to buy. And women who are pregnant or seeking to become pregnant are likely to change their shopping habits.”

When BuzzFeed News broke the story, the owner of the Maya app emailed a warning to BF, fighting back:

“As BuzzFeed has not been the intended recipient of the email, it should have never been shared with BuzzFeed and you as its representative,” the email said. “Considering that the unauthorized disclosure has already happened, we hereby urge you to erase all the material erroneously obtained without prevarication and delays. We shall be waiting on your confirmation of the erasure.”

“All data accessed by Maya are also essential to the proper functioning of the product. Predicting information pertaining to menstrual cycles is complex and dependent on thousands of variables,” the email added. “Location information, the significance of which is highlighted in the report, helps us triangulate regional variations in cycle lengths and thus help improve accuracy of our prediction over time.”

Right…as if a news agency that received info on a story ‘erroneously’ is required to delete the info because of its ‘erroneous’ origins. NOT.

I mean, maybe they don’t share all your info, as they suggest, but there is residual proof that what their app collects can trigger certain ads even without specific information. Per Buzzfeed:

“MIA Fem asks users about all kinds of habits ranging from smoking to coffee consumption and tampon use. This data isn’t immediately shared with Facebook, Privacy International’s analysis found, but it enables MIA Fem to suggest articles to app users. Those articles — which are tailored to a user’s selected interests — are shared with Facebook. It also shared “reminders” within the app to take birth control medication with Facebook.”

Really what this is telling us is to read the terms of service before downloading an app. As consumers, we need to understand what information these companies are collecting. Sure, it might seem like a waste of time to read pages of legalese, but it just might save you the headache of your privacy being invaded.

Or maybe our government could step up and regulate an industry that is clearly flouting the reasonable standards of privacy that we’ve lived with in the law for generations? Or not. Whatever.

15 Movies That Would’ve Ended Quickly If the Main Characters Had Just Followed the Rules

I think it’s annoying to watch movies where the plot depends on a main character who just will not do what they’re told, even if they should, and even if the person doing the telling has way more knowledge and experience, and even if it’s definitely going to hurt them to go their own way.

Because surely there is a better and more believable plot device to move the story from here to there involving a character who actually makes sense?? Although you do get that nice jolt of dramatic irony as the reader.

These 15 movies might not have existed at all without the dumb main character who just refused to do what they were told.

15. I mean, he was the one who drew first blood so.

First Blood would just be a movie about a Vietnam vet taking a walk if Brian Dennehy didn’t pull a u-turn and give Rambo a hassle.

14. It probably still would have ended badly.

The Cabin in the Woods

The “Harbinger” warns them to turn back, so they do. The end. Except that still probably means everybody dies.

13. He really did just make a big mess for himself to clean up.

The entire Bourne Identity series.

If he just shot the guy on the boat he would never be in that mess that he got himself into

12. This really is excellent advice.

The Exorcist/Ouija/any and all films involving a Ouija board.

“Don’t play with Ouija boards.”

“Ok.”

11. Take the blue pill and forget it ever happened. Do it.

Matrix

Neo: “Sorry, I think you got the wrong number click”

10. The same goes for Alice in Wonderland.

Coraline.

Bobinsky said “Do not go through the little door.” she should’ve listened.

9. In this case, we owe thanks to the misbehaving kids.

Mary Poppins.

If the kids were well behaved, Katie Nanna would have never left, and so there would have been no need for the charming and magical nanny to arrive.

8. I, for one, wish this had happened. #unpopularopinion

Breaking bad.

“I can pay for your cancer treatment

-Oh thank you’re the man”

The end

7. The government should have listened to the scientists in every disaster movie ever.

28 Days Later.

The animal rights people listen to the scientist at the beginning.

6. Why can’t people ever just let the police handle it?

Jeepers Creepers.

“Darry, we should definitely not poke around the creepy, abandoned church that we think a dead body was dumped at, lets just drive to the police and move on with our day because this is a very unsafe situation.”

“You’re absolutely right, Trish. Let’s go to the police and let them handle it.”

Roll the credits.

5. Yeah, that’s basically doing the opposite of what you’re told.

Labyrinth.

Babysit your brother

*main character doesn’t go on a drug trip for 2 hours*

4. Yeah, we’ll just see about that.

Skyfall.

‘Bond you are decommissioned.’

‘Aight imma head out’

3. These might be the worst parents in Disney history.

Frozen

Trolls: Your daughter will be fine. Don’t be fearful of her powers, because fear leads to destruction.

Parents: We understand. Also even though Anna lost her memories of Elsa’s powers, keeping them away from each other for literally no reason would be just cruel so they can continue to play together so long as we set some ground rules to ensure safety.

The End

2. Why couldn’t Hamlet just avenge the murder like a normal son?

While not necessarily a movie, but Hamlet.

If he just killed the uncle that he hated, who banged his mom, and who ghost dad told him to kill, Hamlet wouldn’t have died (or like, almost everyone else), or screwed over Denmark.

1. Well go and ruin a classic, why don’t you?

The Breakfast Club.

If they did what they were told in the first place, no Saturday detention.

I mean…some of these are still guilty pleasures for me, though. I can’t help it!

Do you like any of these? Does it bother you when stupid characters exist to move the plot along?

Let us know in the comments!

Take a Look at “The Avengers” Performed Perfectly by a High School Dance Squad

This is wonderful!

The PAC Dance Team of Arizona’s Walden Grove High School recently went viral with a perfectly executed The Avengers dance routine. This comes a year after they went viral for a Harry Potter themed dance. In fact, this is their third time their choreography and costumes have taken over the internet – so they’re very legit.

This time, the PAC Dance Team dazzled at their Homecoming assembly with a routine based on Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

The dancers were out of this world. Watch below:

The group performed to hits like Snap Yo Fingers by Lil Jon, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, and Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys. They also included dialogue from both films for added drama.

For seven minutes, dancers battled it out, good guys versus bad, for control of the universe, with the Avengers emerging victorious (obviously).

Since its posting last week, the video has amassed over 2.5 million views. And it’s no wonder! These dancers are so talented and creative, and they really know how to please a crowd.

Posted by PAC Dance Team on Tuesday, July 24, 2018

A few years ago, the troupe auditioned for America’s Got Talent with a dance inspired by Wizard of Oz. That performance was their first to go viral – the video got almost 3.8 million views.

Their Harry Potter routine started with a scene showing Harry in his cupboard under the stairs, then ends with his sorting into Gryffindor House. That video got around 12 million views.

THE HERMIONE GRANGER shared our video?! Wow!! Thank you Emma Watson!!

Posted by PAC Dance Team on Wednesday, October 17, 2018

Dancing is one of those universal languages, like music and art. Everyone loves to move and see movement with choreography, fun costumes and exciting themes. Wouldn’t it be great if other groups, whether schools or clubs, challenged each other to come up with more of these over the top productions?

Because we clearly cannot get enough.

A Young Girl Asked for Green Army Women and the Toy Company Listened

You probably played with those famous little green Army men at one point or another – especially if you’re a male. But the Army men toy game was recently turned on its head when BMC Toys, the company that manufactures those little green guys, received a letter from a 6-year-old girl from Arkansas.

The little girl, Vivian Lord, sent a letter to the company that read, “My name is Vivian. I am six years old. Why do you not make girl army men. Some girls don’t like pink, so please can you make army girls that look like women? I would play with them every day and my friends would too!”

And the folks at BMC Toys took notice and decided to do something about it.

Posted by BMC Toys on Saturday, September 7, 2019

The President of BMC Toys, Jeff Imel, said, “It was a heartfelt letter. And it reminded me of being a kid and always wanting that toy that you couldn’t get in the gumball machine. So I really looked into it.”

Imel said the company did some research and decided to produce a line of female soldier toys that will be available by Christmas 2020. The new female army toys will come in four poses.

Imel said, “What’s been really surprising to me is how many women have contacted me since Vivian’s story aired on national television to say they wish they had little Green Army Women when they were children back in the ’60s.”

Posted by BMC Toys on Monday, September 2, 2019

It wasn’t an easy decision either. Imel is the only full-time employee at BMC and he explained the process: “I have to pay the sculptor. I have to pay the tooling. I have to make a down payment on production. If it’s coming from China, it’s on a boat for five weeks. By the time you figure out the cost of everything involved in making an original set of plastic toy figures in this size,” he said. “It starts around the cost of a modest new car.”

Imel added, “Every kid wants to be the hero of their story. It shouldn’t be up to us to decide who the hero is. Girls should be able to connect to the toys just as much as boys do.”

It may be pricey, but it will obviously be worth it once these toys hit the market. And it’s all due to young Vivian Lord’s decision to step up and write a letter. I have a feeling this girl is going to be a real trailblazer!

I can’t wait to see what the toys look like when they’re completed!
