Well, it looks like Friends fans have good reason to get all fired up. News recently came out that a Friends special reunion show is in the works, and millions of people across the globe could not be happier.

There’s no doubt that Friends is one of the most popular TV shows of all time. The program ran from 1994 until 2004 and developed a rabid fan following during the years it was on NBC and in the years of re-runs since then.

The six stars of the show, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc, and the creators of Friends are all reportedly in talks to reunite on the HBO Max network, which launches in 2020.

One thing to keep in mind: according to reports, the new Friends special would be “unscripted.” So maybe it could be some kind of panel where the stars and the creators talk about the legacy and history of the show?

Time will tell…

But we’re excited to see if the gang gets back together again!

Happy International Day of FRIENDShip! #Friends25

On October 27, Jennifer Aniston said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, “We would love for there to be something, but we don’t know what that something is. So we’re just trying. We’re working on something.”

Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this comes to fruition and no one backs out or the idea just fizzles out. I’m down for this reunion. Are you?

Here’s the Trick to Solving a Rubik’s Cube

A Hungarian professor named Erno Rubik invented the Rubik’s Cube in 1974, and get this – he didn’t realize he was making a puzzle at all until he accidentally scrambled it up and couldn’t fix it.

“It was a code I myself had invented, yet I could not read it,” he famously said.

It took him a month to solve his own puzzle, which he eventually did by first rearranging each side’s corners to match.

Luckily for you (not him) the internet now exists to tell you how to solve the infamous Cube.

David Singmaster’s layer-by-layer method for solving the Rubik’s Cube was the first to be published, and it’s still the most common method to teach beginners. He basically introduces algorithms – which here means a memorized sequence of moves that will have a specific effect on the Cube’s position – to cube solving.

In fact, all of the methods people use today require you to memorize a series of algorithms and to execute them in a specific order to solve the Cube.

There is more than one set of algorithms you can use to get to the end, and being able to finish a cube is not the same as being able to do it quickly. The way people speed up their solving is by memorizing lots of algorithms and then quickly determining the right algorithm to use in any given Cube situation.

In 1982, an American teenager, Minh Thai, solved the Rubik’s Cube in under 23 seconds, and eventually wrote a book called The Winning Solution that revealed his corners-first method.

In 1997, Jessica Friedrich and her method – later coined CFOP – set the gold standard for quickness, and in 2019, the current world record is just 3.47 seconds.

You can find YouTube videos for both the layer-by-layer method, CFOP, and just about all of the others, as well as pages with detailed instructions. It can seem daunting at first, but if you stick with it, you’ll see there’s a method to the madness, and solving the Cube isn’t about smarts, but memorization and determination.

Solving it fast is a different story, so if you’re after that world record, best of luck.

If you decide to have a go at it sans instructions, though, I’d set your sights on beating Erno Rubik’s time of a month.

And best of luck with that, too.

The “Scully Effect”: Female “X-Files” Fans Flock to STEM Careers

Scully does it again!

As if The X-Files wasn’t awesome enough as a television show, now we’re learning that all of the little girls who looked up, wide-eyed, at the tough-as-nails, no-nonsense, science-loving Scully are flocking to careers in science, math, and engineering.

Those fields have long been dominated by men, and though that tide has been shifting little-by-little, women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) fields still find themselves in the minority more often than not.

The news comes out in a recent report compiled by scientists working for The Geena Davis Institute. They surveyed more than 2000 U.S. women over the age of 25, 68% of whom were X-Files viewers, and asked them whether watching Dana Scully influenced their career decisions as they grew up.

A significant number of them said her character affected them to the point that they chose to major in a STEM field in college, and to work in STEM field as a career. They claimed that Scully gave them positive impressions of women working in science, and more than half said she increased their confidence in their ability to succeed in a male-dominated field.

More than 60% responded that Scully’s character increased their belief in the importance of STEM work.

“In the world of entertainment media, where scientists are often portrayed as white men wearing white coats and working along in labs, Scully stood out in the 1990s as the only female STEM character in a prominent, prime-time television role.”

The study provides data to back up long-held anecdotal beliefs that a “Scully Effect” of this type existed.

Saying definitively that Scully is the reason gets tricky, since there’s always the chance that women interested in STEM are more likely to watch shows like The X-Files in the first place.

That said, if more women are entering STEM fields, I say give Scully the credit (or maybe let her share it with Astrid, from Fringe).

With The X-Files revival, who knows – maybe a whole new generation of girls will be inspired.

Pixar Has a Movie Coming out About Death, and the First Promo Alone Is Way Too Much

If you enjoy Pixar, then you, like the rest of us, have begun to realize that their writers and creators sustain themselves on the tears of their viewers.

Between the beginning of Up, pretty much every moment of Toy Story (all of them), the short film Lava, and BingBong’s death in Inside Out, I’m a blubbering mess of tears just thinking about subjecting myself to another one.

So when I heard they were making a movie called Soul – which is about death – well, I…I’m honestly just not sure I’ll be able to handle it.

The film stars Jamie Foxx and will follow Joe, a middle school band teacher who dreams of playing jazz music in a NYC club before he dies.

He gets a gig…and then dies falling in a manhole cover.

That’s just the beginning of the movie, you guys.

After that, he finds himself at the You Seminar – the pace where we all get our souls – and meets Tina Fey (who is likely to be iconic, because duh), but honestly we don’t know too much about where the plot will go from there.

Yet.

The animation looks amazing, of course, and the writing will be stellar. If, you know, I’m able to hear and appreciate all of that over the sound of our collective sobs.

May the odds be ever in our favor.

This Is What You Should Know About the Hymen

Too many people don’t understand the female body well enough (or at all). The recent revelation that rapper T.I. asks his daughter’s doctor to check her hymen to ensure her virginity on a yearly basis is the (extremely disgusting and invasive and inappropriate) proof. And the fact that so many people support him makes a lot of women very uncomfortable.

In case you’re someone who would like to know more, or who would like to be able to educate other people who should know more, here’s some general information for all of us about a part of the female body.

First up, fact check: the presence of an attached hymen does not indicate whether or not a woman has had vaginal intercourse.

Truly.

View this post on Instagram

"We have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen."⁣??‍♀️ ⁣ Yup, TI the rapper said this on a podcast recently.⁣ I can’t make this up. ⁣ If he would have come into my office asking for this I would have laughed in his face. But seriously, there are a lot of people that don't know that you actually can't tell if a woman is a virgin or not just based on an exam. It just doesn't exist.⁣❌ ⁣ ⁣So what is the hymen? It is a thin piece of tissue that covers the opening of the vagina. The hymen can stretch or tear as a result of various behaviors, by tampon or menstrual cup use, pelvic examinations with a speculum, regular physical activity, sexual intercourse, insertion fingers or items into the vagina, and activities such as gymnastics. There are different types and shapes.⁣ ⁣ When a dad puts their daughter in this predicament then she can't trust him. He is humiliating her and possibly making her hide things behind his back. In this case it is making his daughter and other women believe that sex is bad and is not healthy. Her outlook on sex is totally different now and possibly gives her a subconscious thought to thinking that controlling her is ok. She also will possibly view going to the gynecologist or any doctor for that matter as a bad experience, and that could potentially have health consequences for her future. ⁣ So how do we tell if someone is a virgin or not? ⁣ You ask them! ⁣? That's it.⁣ Plan and simple. ⁣ Communication is key as a human being, between friends, between father and daughter, mother and son, doctor and patient.⁣?? ⁣ Let's learn from this and hope that in this century we can dispell myths on virginity, what sex means and hope that women are not scared to see doctors for their health concerns. I hope his daughter can overcome this and have a healthy sexual relationship in her future, because she is after all 18 years old and an adult!⁣ ⁣ FYI, In October 2018, the UN Human Rights, UN Women and the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that virginity testing must end as it is a painful, humiliating and traumatic practice, constituting violence against women. Let’s end this violence! Keeping it real! Dr. E

The hymen is a thin piece of membranous tissue that partially covers the vaginal opening. It’s usually half-moon shaped, but every body is different. The general belief is that when a woman has sex for the first time the hymen is “broken,” but in truth, it’s typically stretched and only sometimes torn.

Again, that doesn’t happen for everyone.

#Repost @plannedparenthood • • • • • • “Sex” means different things to different people, so “virginity” does too. But whatever you believe, the fact is you can’t tell if someone’s had sex by checking their hymen (the thin, fleshy tissue that’s located at the opening of the vagina). Hymens are different for everyone. Most hymens naturally have holes in them, and some are more open than others. Many other activities besides sex can stretch your hymen — like riding a bike, doing sports, or putting something in your vagina (like a finger or tampon). ?: @emilysweirdembroidery #misogyny #misogynior #virginity #sexed #hymen #embroidery #sexeducation #womensrights #genderbasedviolence #genderequality #genderequity #equality #equity #feminism #feminists #feminist #oppression #oppressed #marginalized #disenfranchised #virginitytesting #antiwomen

A post shared by David Mondelice (@sonofgoddess1207) on

Not only that, but some girls are born with open hymens, some don’t have one at all, and others naturally stretch or tear their hymens through activities like gymnastics, exercise, or horseback riding – even using tampons, menstrual cups, and regular gynecological exams could cause stretching and/or tearing.

The idea that if a woman is a virgin she’ll bleed the first time she has sex? Also a myth, for the reasons mentioned. Also, even if a woman is a virgin, and even if she has a hymen, her hymen may not bleed if it gets stretched and/or torn.

The bottom line? No one should be examining a woman’s hymen or bedsheets for proof of her virginity, or in order to verify rape allegations – it is useless and can potentially cause physical and psychological harm.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN) condemn virginity testing for those reasons and because, in some countries, if an unmarried woman is determined to not be a virgin, she may be publicly shamed, beaten, and imprisoned. Not to mention she may be more likely to consider suicide – or even be murdered.

“The practice is a violation of the victim’s human rights and is associated with both immediate and long-term consequences that are detrimental to her physical, psychological, and social well-being. The harmful practice of virginity testing is a social, cultural, and political issue, and its elimination will require a comprehensive societal response supported by the public heath community and health professionals.”

Also, the concept of virginity itself might be a topic for another day, but this bears repeating: virginity is a social construct, and, in most cases, a holdover from a very different time. A time when women were controlled like property by the men in their lives, and a time before we had technology that could address concerns like paternity and inheritance.

Whether or not a woman has had sexual intercourse has no bearing on her value to herself, her family, or to society at large.

The sooner we all accept that and stop (literally, in some cases) poking our way into other people’s business, the better off everyone will be.
