15 Memes About the Broomstick Challenge

Internet fads come and go – some are destined for lasting greatness, others are doomed to become obscure punchlines.

Luckily, the internet is forever, so even the more niche trends get permanently archived, like in this #BroomstickChallenge compilation.

This all started, apparently, with a viral twitter video claiming that “NASA said” your broom could stand up on its own today only (because…gravity? I guess?).

For the record, that’s not how anything works. Getting a broom to stand up on its own is just a balancing trick, and no special circumstances are required.

But it was one of those ideas that creates an itch in the human brain. A feeling of “That’s dumb…I wanna try it.”  And thus… a meme was born.

Enjoy how people made fun of other people on the internet.

1. Twitter got in on the fun

2. Then historians chimed in

3. Retail employees everywhere were deeply annoyed

4. The “Nobody:” meme got used in a big way

5. Demons were summoned

A Tumblr User Took a Deep Dive on ‘Lord of the Rings’ Mythology

My entire knowledge of the Lord of the Rings universe is “Short man takes ring to volcano, Peter Jackson stretches The Hobbit into three unnecessary movies. ”

But then I’ll stumble upon things like this Tumblr essay from user mirkwoodest, and be reminded that the Lore of the Rings is richer and more complicated than just about anything else out there.

You get it? Lore of the Rings?

Nevermind, just check out this thread about Tolkien’s insane naming system.

It starts with something I never realized… that the Hobbits had different names?!?

Is this retconning gone wild? Not exactly.

But if you think this is just about TWO languages, hold onto your butt.

I’ve never seen anyone this excited about etymology.

Then come the Horse People.

Basically, it’s word-nerd inception.

God bless the internet and its ability to connect people who know way too much about their favorite things. And Tumblr seems to be THE repository for things like that.

What’s a topic you could nerd out about forever? Let us know in the comments!

Or write a lengthy, well-researched post on Tumblr and drop a link in the comments.

Either of those scenarios work for me.

Teenage Brothers Spent 8 Years Recreating ‘Toy Story 3’ With Real-Life Toys

I’m not sure if Toy Story 3 is the best of the entire franchise, but I can say for sure that, as a parent, it definitely made me cry the hardest.

And let’s be honest, that bar was already pretty high.

Eight years ago, these brothers fell in love with not only the film, but with the fanciful idea that toys came to life when we weren’t looking, and a little bit with storytelling and filmmaking, too.

Mason McGrew, the younger of the brothers, told Buzzfeed

“As soon as we saw Toy Story 3, it became our favorite film, and will forever be.

We’d always been such huge fans of Pixar and the Toy Story franchise that we eventually decided we wanted to pay tribute to the studio and film that we love so much.”

They’ve spent the intervening days and weeks re-creating the tale with their own toys, and y’all, the results are really something to behold.

The brothers used stop-motion animation to create the movie, and it looks exactly like you’d imagine it would if the toys were alive in real life, and not animated at Pixar.

Mason said that every 1 to 6 second clip could contain “more than 25 video elements.”

Morgan and Mason McGrew are from Des Moines, Iowa (please, no jokes about there being nothing better to do there!), and yes, they’ve remade the entire movie – shot for shot – with their very own toys.

They began working on it with Morgan was 15 and Mason was 12, and just finished.

Mason said,

“Overall, the hardest thing about this film was staying disciplined.

It was very important to us that we finish what we began as kids.”

The entire film is available to view on YouTube, and look at that! We’ve got it for you to watch.

You’re welcome…

Morgan is now 23 and has finished his degree in digital media/business at Buena Vista University. His brother Mason is 21 and in his final semester at the same school, soon to have the same degree under his belt.

Both of them hope to work with stop-motion animation as a career and honestly, I don’t see how anyone could turn them down!

Funny and Weird Memes Made From wikiHow Illustrations

Have you ever heard of wikiHow? It actually has a lot useful info for a lot of random stuff, but one of the best things about the website are the illustrations. They go WAY above and beyond the call of duty with their weird/funny/bizarre/hilarious drawings that accompany instructions.

Yeah, you could say I’m a big fan! Or maybe the biggest fan? Well, apparently not, because others have taken upon themselves to grab a bunch of these drawings and make hilarious, out-of-context memes.

Let’s take a look at some of the more unusual pieces of “art” from wikiHow.

This is Why More and More Men Are Painting Their Nails

If you see a male with painted toes and fingernails and assume that he’s either a) got a young daughter or b) is somehow living outside the mainstream of masculinity, well, be prepared to change your assumptions, my friends.

The menicure is here, and it looks like it’s gonna stay.

Fashion trends come and go, but I, for one, always cheer for the ones that bring up discussions about freedom and longstanding but useless social constructs, don’t you?

Men painting their nails isn’t exactly new – musicians like Kurt Cobain and David Bowie led the charge in the days of grunge and emo, and actors and other celebrities like Marc Jacob and Jonathan Van Ness are on trend today, along with (according to Mei Kawahiri) Harry Styles, Asap Rocky, and Pete Davidson.

Though it used to be that black nails was the main thing on men, guys today are really venturing out – choosing different colors and, honestly, living their best lives.

Whether they take a leap with color or stick to neutrals that are easy to match, men getting manicures and pedicures is becoming a mainstream thing.

Anything that challenges us, promotes inclusion, celebrates diversity, or encourages people to express their most authentic self is on the menu – and on trend – in today’s society. And as a women who has had the socially acceptable option to paint her nails every day of her adult life, I can vouch for the fact that a little pop of color can make you feel happier, more confident, and just give you a reason to smile.

There’s no reason to deny those things to men who want to paint their nails, so the next time you see a guy sporting his happy menicure, make sure to pay him what I’m sure will be a well-deserved compliment.

A Woman Was Alone at a Screening of “Cats” and Tweeted the Whole Thing

The recent movie adaptation of the stage play Cats received a lot of publicity. Most of it wasn’t good. Like, at all. You know what they say, though – all publicity is good publicity – though I just don’t know if that’s always true.

There were actual fans of the play and of the actors who signed on for the movie (so many stars!) who were excited to check it out.

One such person is Australian Brydie Lee-Kennedy, who has to try so hard to check the film out at an open air screening it seemed like the movie was trying to save her from herself.

When she first arrived, no one else was there.

Three people did eventually show up, along with…more bats than that.

It is Australia, though, so creepy wildlife is expected and, I imagine, planned for.

The spot where they were viewing the film (or trying to) usually sells out, so everyone seemed a bit confused about what was going on.

An employee suggested it was because the film was for children (it’s the opposite of that), but Brydie and her friends soldiered on.

Then, the sound went out.

And a thunderstorm showed up, much to the delight of some.

The employees at the outdoor theater eventually canceled the showing, even though the audience had been there for two hours and had only seen (but not necessarily heard) about 15 minutes of the movie.

Kennedy said that even though she was actually looking forward to the movie, she thinks that the apocalyptic nature of the showing was appropriate and exactly how T.S. Eliot would have wanted it.

And that’s how a woman from Australia came to give one of the best non-reviews of Cats at a time when bad reviews of Cats were something of a contact sport.

Did you see the film? Did you want to? Tell us about your experience at the theater, as well!

Drop those comments, fam!

Books That People Claim Traumatized Them for Life

I love a creepy book – the more disturbing, the better. And I’m talking about true crime or fiction. Whatever makes me want to check under my bed at night is good in my book!

People shared the books that have totally traumatized them for life. Let’s see what they had to say!

1. A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor

“This is a short story, but it messed me up so bad. It’s about a family on a road trip that goes downhill and…it just gets so bad. Like, so bad. You have no idea where the story is going because it’s just like, ‘Oh, a sweet family of a mom and dad, their two kids and a baby, and the grandma who’s going a little crazy with old age!’ And then the story takes a hard left turn into Nopeville, USA and never leaves.”

2. Go Ask Alice by Anonymous

“When I read it, it changed my life. It was so horrifying and uncomfortable, yet beautiful in a tragic way. The book is more effective than any ‘Just Say No to Drugs’ class ever.”

3. Clay’s Ark by Octavia E. Butler

“I couldn’t sleep for days after I read it. It’s part of a series called The Patternist and it’s set in a dystopian future. A father and his twin daughters get kidnapped by a man who’s been infected with an alien organism that compels him to infect as many people as possible. Most die from the infection, but the people who survive turn into these creepy cat-like beings. I love cats, but damn…this book made me avoid mine for a while.”

4. The Collector by John Fowles

“This deserves a spot on this list…that’s all I’m going to say.”

5. Zoe Letting Go by Nora Price

“It’s about a girl who’s checked into a facility for a severe eating disorder and writing letters to her best friend back at home…or so she thinks. The subject matter, the unreliable narrator, and the twist at the end all make this book jarring and highly disturbing. A genuinely difficult read.”

6. Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

“This is the one book I’ve read that I can’t get out of my mind. While it’s not meant to be a horror or thriller novel, it’s haunted me more than any ‘scary’ book I’ve read.”

7. Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk

“I’m a big Palahniuk fan and I gotta say this is one of my favorites. It’s about a song that kills people, and it gets really dark REALLY fast. His writing style leaves the reader feeling intrigued and it is truly amazing.”

8. A Short Stay in Hell by Stephen L. Peck

“It is, simply put, the most disturbing book that I have encountered.”

9. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

“I read this in a few hours because I couldn’t put it down. Once I finished, I couldn’t read anything for a week or so since the incredible twist shook me so bad. I would highly recommend for anyone who likes a good mind-fuck.”

10. If You Tell by Gregg Olsen

“I just finished this one. It’s a true story about a woman who tortures her own family and friends. Somehow I missed the ‘true story’ part when I first started reading, and I couldn’t wrap my head around someone writing fiction that was so depraved…only to find out it was true.”

I need to add some of these to my reading list!
