Places That Are on the Cutting Edge of Bathroom Innovation

When I was a young kid visiting my grandparents, there was a little macrame picture hanging on the wall.

It featured a kind of skinny little building on a hill, and beneath that, a short poem I’ll never forget:

“On a cold dark night
In a sleepy haze
Be glad these ain’t
The good ol’ days”

I stared at that thing every time I was in there, completely lost as to its meaning. I don’t know why I never just asked my grandparents what it meant, other than the fact that I felt like there was a joke in there, and I hate admitting that I don’t get a joke.

It wasn’t until I was maybe 15 or so, visiting again for some holiday, that the penny dropped. It was an outhouse. The kind my grandparents had actually grown up using. The poem was about being grateful nobody has to go poop outside anymore. What a time to be alive.

But bathroom innovation didn’t end with,  yanno, the bathroom. Check out these Reddit posts about the cutting edge in poopoo peepee tech.

Photos From People Who Are Doing Weddings the Right Way

Ah, the wedding day. A magical time for you and your spouse, the day you’ll never forget.

No matter how hard you might try.

It is a day frequently immortalized by photographs, often very expensive ones, but some caught off-the-cuff. Of the endless supply that’s out there, though, only a few rise to the top to become internet legends that get spread far and wide to the rest of us.

Here are some of those, thanks to Imgur/Reddit.

15. Best in the world

I’d rather have a bottle in front’a me than a frontal lobotomy.

Best. Wedding. Photo. Ever.

14. You’re outta here

Ironically this had to cost way more than just a normal invite.

My best friend finally mailed me an invitation to his wedding.

7. Keep it classy

I mean, I’ll give ’em this, it’s a brilliant cost-saving measure.

6. Hiding in plain sight

Look, to each their own, but there’s something that hits me weird about hiding from would-be assassins as a form of romance.

Growing up can be really hard. And our various stages of development are just – let’s face it – super awkward and weird.

But you never really get a true appreciation of that until you’re looking at it all in hindsight. It’s not until you’ve had a little distance between you and the thing that you can pick up the photos and other perfect records of the past and say “Wait…what was going on with me?”

The good news is that this is a more or less universal experience and thus there’s no sense getting all shy about it. Instead, celebrate your strange past, and even spread it around the internet, if you wish, like these denizens of Reddit did.

Wonderfully Awkward Photos, Shared Without Regret

Photography – the process by which light is filtered through a lens onto some photosensitive element and subsequently turned into a still record of whatever it captured – didn’t come about until the 1800’s. And at first it was exceedingly difficult to pull off, and certainly not available to most people.

It’s only been with us for about two centuries. Which of course means there’s no one alive today who was born before it, but also that in terms of humanity, it’s way brand new. Humans have been around for at least 100,000 years, and until very recently, none of us had any means of looking back on these perfect snapshots of our candid past.

It makes me wonder – did people before photography idealize their childhood selves? Did they assume they’d always looked pretty cool?

Because we certainly don’t have that luxury, as these people of Reddit will attest.

These People Went to Great Lengths to Get the Perfect Shot

I’ve worked on film sets and I know probably better than most people that every cool image you see had a lot of work put into making it happen.

Often that work is not at all glamorous. Sometimes it’s downright weird, or even demeaning. Occasionally it’s dangerous. You very much enter a mindset of “hey, whatever gets the job done” and you just start grabbing anything you can that might be helpful.

If you’re working without budget (and without permission) things can get especially strange. And that’s never more evident than in the world of amatuer photogs trying to bolster their social media presence.

10. Look at these two

That’s a public street, yo.

9. Leaf me alone

I’m actually very curious to see how that shot turned out.

4. Seize your opening

2. Winds of change
