As the saying goes, if we don’t learn from history, we are doomed to repeat it. One of the bleakest chapters of our history is the genocide of Jewish and other peoples during World War II, known as the Holocaust. Six million Jews were killed by the Nazis, as well as over 5 million people with disabilities, people who were gay or lesbian, and Roma people (again, among others).
But as time goes on, events fade from memory. For example, a 2018 study conducted by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany showed that 66% of millennials did not know what Auschwitz was, and that two-thirds either hadn’t heard of the Holocaust or weren’t sure they’d heard of it.
If you’re one of those people: Auschwitz was the largest concentration camp complex, and 1.1 million people died there, including almost 1 million Jews.

Claire Sarnowski, a 14-year-old, introduced the law in Oregon. She was motivated by her friendship with Alter Wiener, a Holocaust survivor who died in December 2018. According to The Oregonian, Sarnowski didn’t want history to repeat itself.
“Learning about genocide teaches students the ramifications that come with prejudice of any kind in society,” she said.
What are the consequences of not remembering our history? According to the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Semitic incidents are on the rise. In 2018, they recorded 1,879 anti-Semitic incidents, including the deadliest attack on Jews in the history of the United States: the attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

According to the new Oregon law, schools must teach “the immorality of the Holocaust, genocide, and other acts of mass violence.” The law goes into effect for the 2020-2021 school year.

Jeremy Taylor is a lucky man…and he has taco sauce to thank for it. The Oregon man and his dog were trapped for nearly five days after his Toyota 4Runner got stuck in the snow on a forest service road.
Taylor said he fell asleep in the car the first night and woke up the next day only to realize that more snow had fallen during the night. He and his dog tried to walk to safety, but Taylor said the deep snow made it impossible and they returned to the vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office released a missing person report asking for help in locating Taylor.

Taylor said he periodically started his car to keep warm and that he ate taco sauce packets from Taco Bell that he found in the vehicle.
Finally, after almost five agonizing days spent snowbound in his vehicle, a snowmobiler found Taylor and called 911. The Sheriff’s Office arrived and found that Taylor and his dog, Ally, were both in good condition but were very hungry.

Cows lead a pretty boring existence and they need a little entertainment once in a while, just like humans. That’s why Rick Herrmann nailed it when he stopped on a rural road in Oregon and serenaded a pasture full of cows with his saxophone.
Rick’s daughter, Erin Herrmann, posted the videos her father playing his smooth sax to the cattle. The crowd of cows just couldn’t resist these silky tunes.

Herrmann said he’s been playing the sax for about seven months, and when he saw a video of people playing music for animals him and his wife took a ride so he could play for some cows nearby.
“I thought they might be curious. I guess I didn’t expect them to crowd the fence so much.”
Erin Herrmann said that the cows appreciated her father’s playing much more than the family dog.
“Our dog, Piper, hates the noise so much, she even chewed up all his reeds once. My dad was running by the field on June 25 and thought that maybe the cows would appreciate his music more than Piper would. He was definitely right! We always talk to and go see the cows near the house because they are his favorite animal and they make his so happy … He’s just such a good hearted guy and likes to be goofy and enjoy the simple things in life! He loves that he’s making people so happy!”

The need for modern societies to move beyond fossil fuels and develop renewable energy alternatives is undeniable. Towards those efforts, city planners of the world should keep an eye on what’s happening in Portland, Oregon.
The city has partnered with a company called Lucid Energy to generate clean electricity for the city by utilizing the water already flowing beneath the city.

A section of Portland’s water system was replaced by pipes designed by Lucid Energy that contain four 42″ turbines. As the water flows through the pipes under the city’s streets, the turbines spin and provide energy that is put into the city’s electrical grid.
Lucid Energy says this will be “first project in the U.S. to secure a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for renewable energy produced by in-pipe hydropower in a municipal water pipeline.” One big advantage that this type of energy-generating system has is that it isn’t affected by the weather, like solar and wind power are.
The water must be moved by gravity because the energy required to pump water through pipes would make the energy generated by this technology pointless. In other words, cities with an abundance of hills will be the winners with this technology.

When the project is complete it is supposed to generate power to up to 150 homes. While that might not sound like a lot, it is a great start for what is basically a brand new technology.

There is a 30-foot tree trunk known as the “Old Man of the Lake” that has been floating vertically in Oregon’s Crater Lake for nearly 120 years. In 1938 they tracked the tree trunk’s movement and discovered that it had traveled a total distance of over 60 miles in just under 3 months.
