Inga Petry Uses Social Media to Prove You Don’t Need Arms to Live a Happy Life

It’s always remarkable when people find new ways to do tasks we take for granted.

I can remember receiving Christmas cards painted by artists using their feet and being amazed.

I’m clumsy. Uncoordinated. My feet are basically good for walking and nothing else.

But when I was a small child, I didn’t have the dexterity to write or knit with my fingers, so it makes sense that such dexterity can be learned over time.

And as they say, necessity is the mother of invention.

Still it’s hard to fathom, which is why it’s so powerful when people who live this way are willing to share that part of themselves on social media, as Inga Petry has done.

21-year-old Inga started life in an orphanage in Novosibirsk, Siberia.

According to an interview she did for Medium as a freshman at King’s College in New York, her birth mother endured a series of comas, which caused Inga to be born without arms.

The condition is called “upper limb aplasia,” and the CDC notes that it affects about 1 in 19,000 children born in the United States.

But it didn’t slow Inga down.

The Daily Mail reported that Inga was adopted at the age of 2-and-a-half by Pennsylvania based accountant Daniel and music teacher Jennifer Petry.

“My parents taught me that there were no excuses. My mother was a music teacher and she taught me how to play the cello without arms.”

She has played since she was only three, learning by the Suzuki method, and her favorite piece is Camille Saint-Saëns’ haunting masterpiece “The Swan” from Carnival of the Animals.

According to that Medium article, Inga’s parents adopted five other children as well, each with their own disability.

Active on social media, Inga maintains a sense of humor and uses her platform to educate people about life with disabilities.

Her Instagram profile bio cheekily states, “Just call me Venus de Milo,” and on YouTube, she posts makeup tutorials:

And real talk about the ins and outs of dating with a disability:

Some of those posts feature her boyfriend Joe, as well.

The two met while Inga was a freshman at King’s College, and shared a long-distance relationship for awhile, with Joe attending college in Georgia.

During the pandemic they quarantined together, and Inga recently transferred down south to continue her education at the University of Miami (Go ‘Canes).

Grateful for the offer of prosthetics, Inga decided that she ultimately didn’t need them.

She spent her life adapting to the demands of an abled world, learning to cook, write, put on mascara, and drive a car with her feet.

A tall chair helps her around the kitchen, so she can use the stove and wash the dishes.

At King’s College, Inga studied politics, philosophy, economics, and international affairs.

Her ambitions include motivational speaking, law, investigative analysis, and international counter-terrorism.

She’s also interested in modeling, and she told The Daily Mail that there should be more diversity in that arena.

“I think it would be incredible to see more women with disabilities in the modeling and fashion industry.”

Watch this video from SWNS, Atlanta for more.

Clearly, Inga has a bright future ahead of her, and we’re all just lucky to be along for the ride.

Jaden Smith Has a Restaurant that Feeds the Homeless for Free

Sometimes I look around and the world seems pretty awful.

But that’s big picture. It’s funny because the song “From a Distance” talks about how if you zoom out far enough, the world looks fine and we’re all just people. No hunger, no war, etc. And that’s fair enough. Mother Earth looks pretty beautiful from Space. But all the bad stuff in the world–war, poverty, pandemics–those are all big things. And it’s easy to get overwhelmed by them.

Sometimes you have to put the big picture stuff on hold, and look for hope in the details. Like teenage Mari Copeny, aka Little Miss Flint trying to solve not only the water crisis in Michigan, but to help kids out in other ways too.

Or young Greta Thunberg inspiring an entire generation to work towards climate change. And don’t forget Boyan Slat who, at the age of 18, began to take on ocean plastic. This generation of young people is AMAZING, and there are so many stories of them that make the future seem a lot brighter.

One example is 22-year-old Jaden Smith, off-spring of LA power couple Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, who is working hard to solve the food crisis in LA. Two years ago, Jaden started a food truck called “The I Love You Restaurant” with a mission of supplying healthy, vegan meals to the homeless on Skid Row for free.

The reason behind this act of charity is pretty clear: selfless love for others.

But Jaden didn’t stop there. According to Tank’s Good News:

During the pandemic, Smith found a way to supply care packages to Skid Row that included food, masks, other clothing items, and hand sanitizer.

Taking care of those in need is a pretty epic way to exist in the world.

Together with partner Drew FitzGerald, Jaden launched a charity cleverly named 501cthree with a mission centered around “deploying solutions for energy, food, water & shelter.”

They started with a water box to provide clean, filtered water in Little Miss Flint’s domain.

Still running the food truck, and popping up in places like the Midnight Mission to scale up their services, Jaden is looking forward to a new endeavor.

Next up will be an actual physical dine-in version of the “I Love You Restaurant” food truck, still free for the homeless, but serving the entire community and charging customers who are able to pay, to help fund the endeavor and allow diners to “pay it forward.”

15 People Share Their Best Good Neighbor Stories

If you’re anything like me, you have no idea who your neighbors even are. You’ve never met them, you don’t know their names – if you’re lucky you might RECOGNIZE them as, in fact, people that live around you.

If you’re like my dad on the other hand, you know all of them, and have a strict friend/enemy list onto which each one has a slot.

But either way, we can all appreciate the truly GOOD neighbors, which is what makes these posts from Reddit so special.

15. Special delivery

Gotta give it up for ’em.

A UPS driver went above-and-beyond this year, delivering nearly 200 packages a day through lockdowns and the flurry of the Holiday season. This week, hundreds of neighbors came out to give him a hero’s salute from aww

14. Never forget

Now get out there and party!

So my 102 year old neighbour was emiddited to hospital with a stroke and she still remembered my 21st from pics

13. Love over hate

Keep tryin’, you’re gonna get defeated every time.

12. The plate

Now I’ve really got something to be thankful for.

My neighbors brought me a "plate" since I didn’t go anywhere for Thanksgiving. from pics

11. The sweet treats

Kids are just puppies that slowly learn how to talk.

Our neighbor gives treats through the fence. Recently he has been giving my daughter treats too. This is them waiting patiently today. from aww

10. The flood

The greatest note you can possibly come across in a situation like this.

9. The smile

Look at that little half-stash booger. What a cutie.

8. Notes from abroad

Our neighbour doesn’t have Wi-Fi, so we talked her through joining ours. Once on she received 70 messages from her children living overseas from HumansBeingBros

7. God bless

That’s what compassion looks like.

6. I’ve got time

En excellent use of your time.

After bad storms, this retired old man goes around our neighborhood and cleans the debris out of yards and catch basins. When I asked him why he said “because I am retired and have the time to help”. 10/10 great dude from HumansBeingBros

5. A burning fire

It’s bad, but you can make it a little bit better.

These Border Collies Replant a Burned Chilean Forest

Herding dogs are smart and high energy.

When we first met ours at a rescue shelter, she was so excited she raced around the yard in circles like a cartoon Tasmanian devil.

That combination of energy and intelligence makes Border Collies the perfect breed for a very special and unexpected environmental task.

Meet Das, Olivia, and Summer:

They live in Chile, where in 2017, fores fires decimated the landscape.

TreeHugger.com described the fires in El Maule in stark terms:

The worst wildfire season in Chile’s history ravaged more than 1.4 million acres early in 2017, destroying nearly 1,500 homes and killing at least 11 people. More than a dozen countries sent fire-fighting specialists to help battle the dozens of destructive blazes.

According to Green Matters, the damage was estimated at $333 million, but the loss of trees and their impact on the environment as a whole is likely immeasurable.

It will take decades to regrow the forest land–but first, new trees must be planted.

Enter sisters Francisca and Constanza Torres and their three Border Collies:

Together, they train the dogs to race across the forest floor wearing backpacks full of native seeds, which they purchase with their own money.

As the sheepdogs run, the seeds spill from holes in their special doggy bags, and spread out where they can begin to take root and regrow the once-lush environment.

It may seem like work to humans, but for the dogs, it’s just a raucous good time.

In an email exchange with Mother Nature Network, Francisca explained:

“They reeeeeally love [it]!! It’s a country trip, where they can run as fast as they can and have a great time.”

And when their bags are empty, the dogs return to their owners for treats and cuddles, and a refill on the seeds.

It’s quite the sight, to see the dogs bounding through the scrub.

And it’s a good thing they have so much energy. According to Green Matters:

This system is also more efficient than having people spread the seeds manually. These speedy canines can race through a forest and cover up to 18 miles a day. Humans, on the other hand, can only cover a few miles each day. These pups can scatter over 20 pounds of seeds, depending on the terrain.

Johnny Appleseed, watch out!

They may not be able to cover the entire forest, but the work these very good girls are doing is already paying off.

The BBC even did a story about them:

It seriously blows my mind to think that two women and their gorgeous pups are changing the world all by themselves and in such a big way.

This Earth Day it makes me wonder, what more could I be doing? What about you? Did your heart just grow three sizes like mine did? Let us know in the comments.

This Cancer Doctor Forgives Over $500,000 in Patient Debt

When I feel sick, the last thing I want to think about is bills. But as many Americans know all too well, being sick can be extremely expensive.

According to CNBC over 17% of Americans have defaulted on their medical debt.

In a population of 3.28 million, that’s almost 56 million people who can’t pay their medical bills.

That’s why the story of Dr. Omar Atiq of Pine Bluff, Arkansas is so bittersweet.

Medical expense is familiar concept. We’ve all seen the GoFundMe pages to raise money for treatment.

According to a Time interview with CEO Rob Solomon, 30% of the site’s fundraisers are for medical care.

He even went to Congress to ask for help.

Dr. Omar Atiq has spoken about the same issue, and urged colleagues to contact their government leaders:

But in December 2020, Dr. Atiq, who had been treating cancer patients in Arkansas for three decades, tried to help his patients one last time in the best way that he could.

Forced to close his oncology clinic because of staffing shortages, Dr. Atiq made the decision to forgive all outstanding balances.

After working with his billing company to forgive about $650,000 owed by around 200 patients, he sent an unexpected Christmas card to his patients.

“I hope this note finds you well. The Arkansas Cancer Clinic was proud to serve you as a patient. Although various health insurances pay most of the bills for the majority of patients, even the deductibles and co-pays can be burdensome. Unfortunately, that is the way our health care system currently works.

Arkansas Cancer Clinic is closing its practice after over 29 years of dedicated service to the community. The clinic has decided to forego all balances owed to the clinic by its patients.

Happy Holidays.”

Here’s what the card looked like…

Interviewed by Fox 16, Dr. Atiq explained:

“Being sick is hard, having cancer is harder, and having Cancer in this pandemic is devastating.

I am just a regular physician–a regular person that they have in the neighborhood–it just so happens to be me standing here.

The ones struggling couldn’t pay, so we thought we could just write off the debt.”

What an absolutely amazing human being.

Now a professor at the University of Arkansas Medical School, it is clear that Dr. Atiq’s students won’t just learn how to treat cancer patients, but also how to treat their neighbors.

This story gave me so many feels. What about you? Let us know in the comments.

Tiffany Haddish Helps Out Foster with Donated Suitcases

The past year has made me think a lot about giving back to my community, and I’ve been looking for new ways to help people out.

That’s why I was so verklempt to read about one celebrity who has been giving back in a deeply personal and meaningful way.

Grammy-winning comedienne Tiffany Haddish and her four younger siblings went into the American foster care system when she was just 12 years old.

As she told David Letterman:

“You’re dropped in these strangers’ houses, you don’t know these people, these people don’t know you, you don’t know if they’re gonna hurt you, if they’re gonna be kind, you don’t have a clue what’s going on.”

What always stuck with Haddish about making the foster care experience extra difficult was that when children are moved from home to home, they’re handed a garbage back to pack up their things.

It made her feel like garbage.

And then one day, in a small way, someone made a huge difference in her life.

Instead of a garbage bag, they gave her a suitcase. Now Haddish felt:

“Like I had a purpose, like I’m a person like I’m not garbage, I got this — it’s mine, and my things are in here, and wherever I go I can take this with me and I’m going somewhere.”

For years, Haddish had encouraged her fans to bring suitcases to her shows and donate them to foster children, including the Beech Brooke organization of Cleveland, Ohio:

And The Villages of Indiana:

These are just some of the over 95 suitcases donated from last week’s Tiffany Haddish show in Bloomington. The…

Posted by The Villages – Foster Care, Adoption, & Family Services on Friday, October 4, 2019

After watching her interview with Letterman on Netflix last fall, a foster care specialist from from Lake County, Indiana, Shanell Manuel took note:

Haddish’s point about garbage bags struck a chord with Manuel, who had herself been bothered by the same thing.

As Distractify reported:

“She reached out to Tiffany’s She Ready Foundation, whose mission is to “protect, provide resources, and ensure normalcy for foster children.”

Once again, Haddish came through with 100 suitcases for Indiana foster kids last Christmas.

And her work has inspired other organizations to do suitcase drives in their communities too.

But she’s not finished yet.

As Black Enterprise recently reported, Haddish’s She Ready Foundation has got a new project to help kids who age out of the foster system start careers in the entertainment industry:

The program is supported by Tiffany Haddish’s She Ready Foundation and Ready To Succeed, a Career Accelerator for foster youth, who will provide training, mentorship and ongoing support.”

It’s truly amazing to see someone so dedicated to helping out such a deserving and under-served demographic.

When Disasters Happen, Willie Ray’s Is There with Free Barbecue

There’s nothing quite like a feel-good story, right?

Well, here’s one that will make you feel good any day of the week.

Back in August of 2020 when most of us probably first learned that the term “derecho” more or less meant a sustained straight-line wind version of a tornado, most of Cedar Rapids, Iowa was left without power.

That’s when Willie Ray Fairley of Willie Ray’s Q Shack stepped up.

Come on out and try this Brisket Baby it’s

Posted by Willie Ray’s Q Shack on Friday, January 8, 2021

The restaurateur saw his friends and neighbors working hard to clean up the city, and he decided to cook up his entire stock and give it away to anyone who needed a hot meal.

As he told the local news station, KCRG:

“I just got my food truck and was ready to start selling, but once the storm hit I thought there might be something better to do with the food.”

Something better indeed.

Willie’s kindness went viral, and soon, people were even donating to his Venmo account to help fund his charitable mission.

“People keep donating, so we’re going to be giving out food for a long time. Even when the storm is over, cleaned up. If there’s still funds left we will continue to give.”

The country began to take notice. He even made MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle’s #GoodNewsRUHLES list.

The local Cedar Rapids community nominated him for a black owned business award from Discover, and he won!

Food can always bring people together. See how Willie Ray’s Q Shack used his $25,000 #EatItForward award to help make a real impact in his Cedar Rapids community. https://youtu.be/HQXQjxm9UAY

They called his work #EatItForward. There’s even a YouTube video:

It’s a really nice award, but Willie hasn’t let it go to his head.

“I would have done all this anyway and never thought anything of it,” he said. “It was how I was raised. It makes me feel good to know that people care.”

But the story doesn’t end there.

A few months later when Texas was rocked by an ice storm causing power outages to thousands, Willie called on volunteers to help him make the trek down from Iowa.

Me and the team is planning on going to Texas to help the needed. By any chance is there a couple volunteers that would…

Frank Ocean’s Message to His Younger Self Really Inspires

Celebrities usually receive an outpouring of love and best wishes on social media when they celebrate a birthday.

Beloved worldwide for his fresh songwriting talents and alternative R&B tunes, Frank Ocean is no different in that respect.

On October 28, 2020, for his 33rd birthday, Blacks Rule Magazine celebrated the Grammy winner with a little Nostalgia of their own.

Referencing a 2011 Tumblr post where a fan asked Ocean, then 24, what he would say to his 19-year-old self who was just starting out, the tweet received thousands of comments and over 100,000 likes.

Instead of brushing the question aside with a flip reply, Ocean opened up to his fans.

Speaking to his younger self, he revealed that he would change his name, that his heart would get broken more than once, but that despite it all, he would survive and do what he was meant to do.

His words really resonated with fans on Twitter. Many expressed that they were moved to tears by the letter.

Others repeated Ocean’s most profound bits of advice to his younger self.

One user pointed out how his words could be applied to all of life’s struggles:

His pragmatic approach to hanging in there really struck a chord with a lot of people:

Most of all people were moved by the fact that in five short years, he got where he wanted to be.

Inspiring fans with the words you shared 9 years ago? Not a bad way to spend a birthday.

His letter certainly made me teary-eyed. How about you?

Thanks, fam!
