Cold Stone Has a Pitch Black ‘Boo Batter’ Ice Cream for Halloween

I love Halloween, I love the fall, I love October. Oh, and I also love ice cream! What happens when you mix all those things together?

‘Boo Batter’ ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery is what.

The new concoction from Cold Stone features black-as-night ice cream topped with heaps of candy. This is how the company described the Boo Batter treat in a press release:

“The Treat Or Treat Creation features Boo Batter Ice Cream, mixed with trick-or treat favorites Halloween OREO® Cookies, Kit Kat® and M&M’s®! In addition, guests will be given the option to bring their Creation to life with a black or orange waffle cone or bowl.”

Sara Schmillen, vice president of marketing for Kahala Brands™, the parent company of Cold Stone Creamery, said, “We are incredibly excited to introduce this super limited time Creation at Cold Stone Creamery. Indulge in the nostalgia of your Halloween childhood memories with the Treat or Treat Creation; it is a spook-tacular way to get into the Halloween spirit!”

Get an eyeful of that jet black gooey goodness.

We’re seeing an onslaught of creepy food and drink options for Halloween this year from eateries, including the It frappuccino at Starbucks and spooky options at IHOP and AMC Theatres for the release of the new animated version of The Addams Family.

I’m already starting to get depressed about October ending and having to wait another year for all this spooky goodness. Is there something wrong with me?

HALLOWEEN!

This Is Why We Get Ice Cream Headaches and How We Can Stop Them

Imagine this scenario: you’re starving, you decide to get some ice cream, you can’t control yourself and go ALL IN.

Then the worst happens: BRAIN FREEZE!

But where does that ice cream headache actually come from?

Dr. Joseph Hulihan of Paradigm Neuroscience says that ice cream is a very common cause of headaches and about one-third of the population gets those painful bouts brought on by ice cream.

Going back to the 1960s, brain freeze has been blamed on one culprit: rapid constriction and dilation of blood vessels.

When something extremely cold touches the roof of your mouth, the blood vessels there cool rapidly and constrict. When they warm up, the blood vessels experience rebound dilation.

This dilation is sensed by pain receptors and pain signals are sent to the brain. The trigeminal nerve sends the signals and it is also responsible for sensation in the face. When the brain receives these signals, it often thinks the pain is coming from the forehead and therefore, we experience headaches.

Strangely, when we experience brain freeze, we’re actually perceiving pain in a different area from the site of the actual stimulus, which is the roof of the mouth in this case. This is known as “referred pain”, and it’s similar to people feeling pain in their chest or their neck when they’re actually having a heart attack.

By slowing down your consumption of cold food or drinks, you allow your mouth (and those pesky nerves) to adjust to the temperature.

Last, here’s a helpful tip to get rid of brain freeze? Put your tongue on the roof of our mouth and hold it there. When the area warms, the pain will go away.

Hope that helps!

Oscar Meyer Has a Hot Dog Flavored Ice Cream Sandwich

Isn’t it really something when companies take two good things, like hot dogs and ice cream, and combine them into one horrific thing? Introducing the “ice dog sandwich,” a new dessert from none other than Oscar Mayer.

The brand collaborated with Il Laboratorio Del Gelato to create the ice dog sandwich, which consists of hot dog-flavored ice cream, candied hot dog bits (!!!), and spicy dijon mustard gelato, all sandwiched between two cookie “buns.”

Sound disgusting?

Yeah.

Oscar Mayer announced the sandwich on Twitter alongside a poll, and the results were a resounding “no thank you.”

“Please tell me this is a joke,” one user tweeted.

“We don’t joke about hot dogs…or ice cream! It’s artisan crafted in small batches made with candied bits of Oscar Mayer Angus Beef Hot Dogs,” the brand replied. They insist that the sandwich is delicious and “will NOT disappoint,” and to be fair, it’s not entirely unprecedented. Just one day before they announced the ice dog sandwich, French’s debuted yellow mustard ice cream.

Anyway, despite everyone’s protests, Oscar Mayer began selling the sandwiches out of their iconic Wienermobile (a 27-foot hot dog on wheels) in New York City on August 12. They handed out free samples; the sandwich is not available for sale.

For a limited time, those not in New York could slide into Oscar Mayer’s DMs for a sample, but they were flooded with DMs and had to close them.

For most of us, hot dog flavored ice cream will have to remain a distant nightmare.

Luckily.

Stores Are Taking Measures to Protect Their Ice Cream from All the Lickers out There

I like to guard my ice cream like it’s made of gold, but that’s just at home. I didn’t realize until recently that my ice cream was in danger at the store, too.

Behold, the licker:

This person licks the ice cream and puts it back in the freezer!

I don’t even have words.

Who thinks this is okay?

Apparently, a lot of the internet. This video has spawned several copycats, who are all licking ice cream and putting it back. Or eating it with their hands.

This has led to stores taking some extreme measures to protect their freezers. For example, there’s this store in Nashville:

And this store, where ice cream is being stored like alcohol:

And this Texas Walmart, where an employee is guarding the case with a toy gun:

Honestly, folks, this is why we can’t have nice things. Please give internet challenges like this a pass. People are going to jail. It’s gross. Just…no.

If Influencers Ask for Free Food, This Ice Cream Truck Owner Charges Them Double

Business owners have given away free food for many years.

Now, influencers have popped up all over, especially on Instagram, looking to promote products and services. The catch? You know it: in exchange for their promotions, they want free products or services – or cash! Larger influencers with millions of followers can make a lot of money for exposure posts. For example, Kendall Jenner raked in $250,000 for one post promoting the disastrous Fyre Festival.

But are influencers losing their charm? Joe Nicchi, an LA ice cream truck owner, recently took a public stand against them.

He’s constantly being hit up by influencers wanting his delicious soft serve in exchange for a post on their Instagram stories. And when they offer him exposure for his food…

That’s right. Influencers pay double! His cones run about $4 each, so if an influencer asks for a free cone, they pay $8. So what ticked him off? According to VICE:

“Last Thursday, I got an event request to do a party on a weekend for 300 people in exchange for the word they love to use, which is ‘exposure.’ I can’t do that; I can’t work for free.”

300 people!? Unreal. This begs the question: Are influencers taking this “marketing strategy” too far?

The “thank you card” is a nice touch…

A post shared by CVT Soft Serve (@cvtsoftserve) on

Nicci started his company back in 2014 as a way to make side income while working as an actor. You’ll find him on the streets of LA in a 1960s Mister Softee truck offering a simplistic menu ― chocolate, vanilla, or a twist cone. With the constant influx of influencers asking for free food, he had to put a stop to it all. He’s a small business owner and can’t afford to give away his “bread and butter.”

“The first 30 seconds of talking, they say ‘Hey, I don’t know if you follow me or not,’ so they tell me their screen name and say ‘If you want to hook me up with a cone, I’ll post it to my story. I’m like are you out of your mind? This is a $4 ice cream.”

What these Instagrammers seem not to understand (or care about) is the cost involved with swapping exposure for a product. They are asking Nicci, who is looking to sell to costumers, to “pay” for exposure (to who? He doesn’t know…) by giving out free ice cream. There’s just NO guarantee he’ll see any benefit.

So what if someone has 20K followers – are any of them in LA? What are the chances that they will buy his ice cream and how would he know?

“We work a lot of these [food truck] events on the weekends, and I’m not going to sound like a douchebag, but we have really long lines. It’s evident that we’re a popular business, but I’ve had many young Millennials who say things like ‘I’m surprised that you only have 5,000 followers.’ What does it matter? I have a line down the street. If Instagram went away tomorrow, I would still exist.”

Not all influencers take advantage, and the influencer bubble will burst soon, I’m sure. But in the meantime, Nicci can get back to what he been trying to do all along: Sell ice cream.
