“Game of Thrones” Actress Sophie Turner Taught Twitter a Lesson on Why Jokes About Mental Health Aren’t Funny

Sophie Turner, whom most of us know as Sansa Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones, doesn’t shy away from controversy. She’s a fiercely outspoken person who always speaks her mind, regardless of the potential blowback.

Turner has spoken out on mental illness before, and her recent foray into the Twitter swamp seems to suggest that the issue remains near and dear to her heart.

Her latest Twitter diatribe about why we should never joke about mental health is one we should all remember, so let’s go to school, shall we?

It began when Piers Morgan, famous jerk, popped off about how he agrees celebrities are trying to make mental illness “fashionable” and perhaps they’re not really suffering. He was responding to an original comment from Beverley Callard, an English actress who talked about her own struggles with depression in an interview.

“Real mental illness is very dark and it takes a great deal of strength to ask for help. I think we are now definitely chipping away at the stigma. But we have to be careful mental illness doesn’t become like a Gucci handbag. There is a danger it can become ‘fashionable.’”

The last sentence, obviously, is the bit Piers Morgan agreed with and many people, Turner included, couldn’t take sitting down.

I’m not sure how Callard could say in one breath that we’re making headway when it comes to de-stigmatizing mental illness, then in the next breath say that celebrities were in danger of treating them like a new handbag. Actresses like Julia Louis Dreyfus spoke out about their breast cancer and treatment, yet no one would think of accusing her of trying to make cancer “fashionable.” So why should mental illness be any different?

Every voice counts when it comes to fighting the battle against mental illness, so people should speak their truth if they feel comfortable, whether they’re celebrities or not.

Because the best way to change minds, hearts, and, eventually, the healthcare system is to make every single person realize there is someone in their life who has struggled, is struggling, or will struggle with mental illness.

10+ Times College Professors Were the Actual Best

They say that those who can’t do, teach – and I’ve always thought that if being a writer doesn’t pan out, being a college professor sounds pretty good. Flexible hours, you deal with your students directly instead of having to put up with their parents, and you still get longer holidays.

I mean, what’s not to love — you know, aside from the ass-kissing, publish-or-perish mentality, and the politics that go hand-in-hand with higher education?

No, but seriously, these 11 college professors totally confirm my assumption that their jobs are awesome more often than not, and that the profession attracts the best sort of people.

#1. It’s best not to ask too many questions.

This Explanation of Men’s Emotional Needs Will Encourage You to Compliment the Men in Your Life More Often

Over the past several decades, society has seen a pretty massive an wonderful movement to be more encouraging to girls and women. Women today are far more aware and confident in their ability to do anything than their great-grandmothers likely did, and it’s been a beautiful and necessary shift in society.

But while boys and men may not need as much reminding that they can do anything or be anything (they’re given that privilege by society, after all), boys and men do need to be reminded that their emotional needs are valid and matter and do not make them less of a “man.”

That’s the crux of the issue of “toxic masculinity,” a concept many are starting to believe is behind many of the emotional issues rampant in male culture – basically, the belief that boys and men need to be tough and stoic and stay guarded in order to be a “real man.”

It’s damaging, and one Tumblr user’s post about how she takes care of her boyfriend’s emotional needs is really putting things into perspective.

And others are responding with their own stories about how they remember to take care of the men in their lives, not just physically, but emotionally, and how much they like it.

And more than that, how much they need it.

The fact that women can feel unsure or uncomfortable when handing out compliments, sympathy, or encouragement to men is only proof that toxic masculinity affects everyone in our culture, not just men.

Or, you know…take care of each other. It’s the only way we’re all going to make it.

Woman Shames Her Engagement Ring on Reddit, Everyone Goes Nuts

Proposing marriage is one of the scariest things someone can do. It’s a moment that’s full of emotions, ideally a celebration of the love between two people. But when the bride-to-be finds the ring before her future fiance can pop the question, and she hates the ring instantly… that certainly complicates things.

Recently, a woman found her engagement ring stuffed into her boyfriend’s nightstand. She then proceeded to post a pic to a ring-shaming group online. The reaction on Reddit was less than sweet, and maybe for good reason…

The woman offered up a roast and an “EWWWWW” and asked Reddit users how to “tactfully say no” because she wanted something different. I think we passed “tactfully” the moment this picture was posted.

Reddit users spun out in different directions, from offering advice:

Or lightening the mood:

To defending her:

While a majority tore her apart:

It probably goes without saying, this marriage will be off to a “rock”-y start.
