Dentist Offers a Hack to Keep Your Mask Secure

This worldwide pandemic forces all of us to wear masks to be safe and keep others safe. But what can you do about a mask that doesn’t fit well, particularly for those of us who have smaller faces?

Masks have to fit well in order to be effective. While the general public wears isn’t a custom mask that someone in medicine would wear, it is necessary and does help. The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of two wear one when not around people in their household and when social distancing is impossible.

One dentist has come up with a solution to your loose mask woes. Dr. Olivia Cui posted her quick and easy hack to Tick Tok, which immediately went viral. It takes about to minute to watch, but we’ll lay the steps out below anyway:

Fold your mask in half, and tie a knot in the ear loops. Make sure to keep the knot as close to the corners of the mask as possible. Reopen the mask—you’ll now see at the sides where you can tuck it in. That’s it—you’re good to go out into the world with a secure mask.

Celebrities and social media influencers shared the hack, which quickly spread across all platforms. Dr. Cuid said that in the absence of an N95 mask, doing this was the best bet.

Hi folx! @katiecouric (via @tt_cui ) shared this great mask trick & I wanted to share with all of you & try it for myself. Masks won’t be a forever thing, but we are still in the middle of a pandemic that affects our bodies & our neighbors’ bodies. Wearing a mask is not an “attack on your rights” nor a government hoax. It’s a simple act of protecting yourself and others from a deadly virus. For me, it’s about being a thoughtful neighbor and putting the collective in front of my own individual comfort so we can beat this thing & return to work, to hugging each other & partying with our grandparents without fearing I or some gd Karen might potentially kill them with their infected breath. No shame in that. ? Stay healthy, stay kind.

A New Heinz Bottle Shows You the Best Way to Pour Ketchup

A heap of ketchup in a puddle next to a hot serving of fries is about as close to heaven as you can get. But why is it so hard to get the stuff to come out of the bottle?

This is the question ketchup lovers have been asking for about 150 years.

Folks, we may finally have the answer—and from Canada, no less.

Thank you, neighbor. We owe you one.

This issue is the angle of the bottle. To illustrate the solution to consumers, Heinz Canada and creative group Rethink Canada distributed Heinz Ketchup bottles with oddly placed labels. When consumers turned the bottle so the label was right side up, the bottle aligned with the perfect angle at which to pour the tangy condiment.

Watch the video below for a demonstration:

Brian Neumann, senior brand manager at Kraft Heinz Canada, told AdAge Magazine:

This year, we have focused our marketing on reinforcing the emotional connection fans have with the brand in clever and ownable ways. We’re always thinking of fun, cheeky ways we can highlight the iconic and timeless nature of the product to give our consumers a smile.

Fun and cheeky is the perfect description of their effort to show us the best way to get to Heinz’s tomatoey goodness – and it’s also what we in the south think of our northerly neighbors.

Now, for the bad news. The helpful bottles are in limited production…i.e. only for Toronto.

But one of the foodie nerds at Food & Wine hacked that. Go run and get your protractor (I think I mentioned “nerd.”) and tip your bottle somewhere between a 35 and 45 degree angle. Make sure to verify the measurement because that is the sweet-ketchup-spot for optimum pouring performance.

Here is my hack on their hack: Paint the protractor red, write your name on it and decorate with stickers. Fasten the loop piece of Velcro on one side of the protractor and the hook piece inside your cabinet door. Hang your customized protractor inside the cabinet. Your very own scientific ketchup pouring angle indicator will be ready whenever you need it.

As they say in some parts of Canada, “Voila!”

Learn About the ‘Pomodoro Technique’ and Boost Your Productivity

Want to be more productive? Then listen up.

The Pomodoro Technique is a great time-management tool, but some people find it a little clunky and give up on it after a while.

If you’re not familiar, the traditional version involves focusing on a task for 25-minutes, then taking a 5-minute break. After four Pomodoros, you get a longer, half-hour break.

People use different variations, but Alexey Guzey has hacked a way to make the technique even easier to use. Guzey suggests the reason why you might give up on Pomodoro is your brain is using energy to think of how to get a task completed in 25-minutes. Or at least getting to a point where taking a break doesn’t interrupt your flow.

Then, there’s the problem of interruptions. Do you restart your Pomodoro timer or keep going?

Guzey says that a better way than using a timer is to keep a calendar with fixed Pomodoro times. Each hour and half-hour starts with the 5-minute break. After three hours, you get a half-hour break.

Here’s an example of how that works:

Work: 9:35 to 10:00
Break: 10:00 to 10:05
Work: 10:05 to 10:30
Break: 10:30 to 10:35
Work: 10:35 to 11:00
Break: 11:00 to 11:05
Work: 11:05 to 11:30
Break: 11:30 to 11:35
Work: 11:35 to 12 noon
Break: 12 noon to 12:35

After a few days, this daily schedule should become a habit. And in case you do get interrupted or distracted, you can check the time and know exactly where to pick it back up.

The calendar/Pomodoro method is also good for reminding yourself to avoid distractions.

For those of us who like schedules, this is a pretty good hack. With or without the Pomodoro timer app, it’s great to be able to see at a glance where you are in your productive hours.

Gotta keep that butt on track!

How to Keep Your Grill Clean, Even Without a Brush

It’s BBQ season! You’re ready to break out the bbq grill, slap on some burgers, steaks, brats, ribs, or all of the above, only to open up the lid and find that whoever put it away last winter didn’t clean off the grime.

It certainly wasn’t you. You would never, I know.

You know you have to clean it – a grimy grill means your food won’t taste as good, plus if there are bits of food left, it could be harboring harmful bacteria that would definitely put a damper on a party mood.

Not only that, but you want to keep that grill going for years to come, and keeping it clean prevents chemical reactions and corrosion that could mean having to spring for a new one sooner.

If that describes a summer day in your house, and you find yourself unable to find the brush to clean if off (who misplaced the damn thing?!), I’ve got some good news: your cookout isn’t ruined.

Well, not as long as you have a roll of aluminum foil around.

First, you’ll want to warm up your grill.

Next, grab enough of that aluminum foil to shape it into a ball big enough to sit on your grates without falling through the openings.

Then, grab the foil ball with a pair of tongs (you’ve located those by now, surely), and give it some elbow grease.

That’s it! The foil should scrub away the burnt and stuck on pieces of last year’s fun with the same (or greater) efficiency as your actual brush.

And it you’d like to avoid this entire scenario in the future (even the cleaning part!) simply wait until your grill is cool and then coat it with a high-heat cooking oil like canola or peanut oil. You can use a spray or take a paper towel to coat all of the grates evenly.

It’s basically like prepping a cast iron skillet, so after the oil is evenly applied you’ll want to turn the grill back on for about 30 minutes in order to settle the oil into the metal.

Onward, friends, through summer bbqs, to autumn tailgates, and beyond!
