I routinely let most dogs I encounter lick me as much as they want. Now, after learning about this story, I can say that maybe I need to back off a little bit…
A 63-year-old man in Germany began to feel ill and ultimately died – and the culprit might freak you out a little bit: the man’s dog licked his face. A couple of weeks later, he got a fever, started experiencing muscle pains, and then had trouble breathing. He decided to go to the hospital to find out what was going on and he received some awful news: he had advanced kidney damage and liver dysfunction.

He was admitted to the hospital but things took a turn for the worse. The doctors realized he was suffering from gangrene and that he had a terrible sepsis infection.
Of course correlation is not causation, so how do we know it was the dog licking that did it?
The man’s bloodwork showed that he was infected with Capnocytophaga canimorsus, which is a bacteria usually found in the saliva of cats and dogs.
No treatments worked on the poor man, and he suffered for 16 days as multiple organs failed. Sadly, his family eventually decided to turn off his life support and the man passed away.

This may sound like something that has never happened before or that would never happen again, but there were two other cases of humans contracting Capnocytophaga canimorsus from dogs in 2018 alone. A 58-year-old woman in Wisconsin died after her dog nipped her, and a man, also from Wisconsin, contracted the bacteria after spending time with eight puppies. The man had to have both of his legs amputated and parts of his hands removed because of the infection.
Our advice: if you happen to be bitten by a dog or a cat, wash the area immediately with soap and water, and have a doctor take a look at the wound just to be on the safe side. Yikes…

In a small town in Austria on the border of Germany sits a structure with a notorious past. It was here, in a nondescript building downtown called the Braunau am Inn, that Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889.
The building has been used as a school and a library over the years, but it has also been a magnet for neo-Nazis who view it as a shrine to Hitler. People have been coming since all the way back in the 1940s just after World War II ended, when Austrian and German veterans would flock to the house on Hitler’s birthday.
In 1972, the interior ministry of Austria took over the main lease from the family that owned the building so that the government could eventually have the final say about what the building would be used for. In 1984, the Austrian government tried to acquire the building outright from Gerlinde Pommer, who had sole possession of the building, but she refused to sell. Pommer also refused to renovate the structure so the government could not find a good tenant for the property.
Finally, in 2017, the Austrian government seized the building from Pommer and the dispute ended. Authorities have decided to turn Hitler’s birthplace into a police station to hopefully deter neo-Nazis from visiting the site.
In 1989, a stone was put in place in front of the building that reads, “For peace, freedom and democracy. Never again fascism. Millions dead are a warning.”
There will be an international architectural competition to redesign the building for its future police tenants.
Wolfgang Peschorn, the interior minister of Austria, said, “The future use of the house by the police should send an unmistakable signal that the role of this building as a memorial to the Nazis been permanently revoked.”
And it’s about time.

Germany has launched a rocket with yeast on board into space. When the rocket returns the yeast will be used to make beer. Making it effectively space beer.
The three rulers of Great Britain, Russia, and Germany, respectively, were first cousins. Additionally, Czar Nicholas II of Russia, King George V of Britain were friends since childhood and were mistaken for each other because they looked so alike.
The people of St. Pauli, Hamburg, were sick of their district smelling like urine because of nightclub patrons relieving themselves on the street. So they painted the buildings with special paint that repels water so forcefully public urinators end up peeing on themselves.
This might be the best story of 2019… so far.
Recently, a neo-Nazi rock festival took place in the small town of Ostritz, Germany. Attendees descended on the small town of just over 2,000 people for the Sword and Shield (SS) music festival to do what neo-Nazis do: get drunk, listen to terrible music, and find like-minded boneheads to act like idiots with.
But the far-right folks were in for a surprise when they found out that a court had recently ruled that no alcohol was to be served or consumed at the event due to the fear of potential violence.
Police kept an eye on the festival to make sure that the ban was upheld.
But the best part?
Locals even chipped in and bought more than 100 crates of beer to really make sure that the far-right festival attendees wouldn’t have any brewskies for the weekend.

A local activist named George Salditt said,
“The plan was devised a week in advance. We wanted to dry the Nazis out.
We thought, if an alcohol ban is coming, we’ll empty the shelves at the local supermarket.”
An estimated 2,000 people also gathered for anti-racist demonstrations in Ostritz during the weekend as well. An estimated 500-600 people attended the Sword and Shield festival and were outnumbered not only by protesters but also by police, who numbered roughly 1,400.

The mayor of Ostritz, Marion Prange, said,
“There are people here in Ostritz who do not tolerate the event, who stand for different values and who try to be role models,” Prange said.

As a kid, did you ever think using giant LEGO bricks to build houses and stuff would be cool? Well, people driving through the Wuppertal, Germany, are living the dream.
Sort of.
A few years ago, the city commissioned German street artist Martin Heuwold of MegX to turn one of its concrete (and thus dull) overpasses into a work of art. And what he did was a stroke of genius – he transformed the train overpass to look like it’s been made out of giant, colorful LEGO pieces.
The city did have to cordon off the overpass from traffic while MegX worked, but just imagine everyone’s surprise when after the barriers came down, and they could drive under a bridge of LEGOs!
To be clear, though the result looks like mega pieces of LEGO, but is actually entirely paint.
The idea came from his two daughters, who loved playing with LEGOs. He approached The LEGO Group for permission (copyright is so pesky), which, of course, they gave gladly. Then, for the next few weeks, he and his crew painted and shaded the 2,700 square-foot bridge to create the incredibly realistic display.
It’s called the Lego-Brücke, which means Lego Bridge. In 2012, the structure was awarded the Deutscher Fassadenpreis Advancement Prize.

Seems as if MegX is on a mission to take the dull and utilitarian and transform it into something mega-delightful.

Apparently vomit sinks are fairly common in German bars, where they go by various names: Kotzbecken, Speibecken, Expektorierbecken, or Pabst.
When two archaeologists excavated an ancient site known as the “German Stonehenge,” they were expecting to uncover axes, animal bones, and drinking vessels. But André Spatzier and François Bertemes stumbled upon something much different – and more sinister.

The duo found the dismembered bodies of 10 women and children at the site called Pӧmmelte in northeastern Germany. One body had its hands tied behind its back, and four of them suffered from skull trauma and rib fractures before death. The position of the bodies suggests they were thrown into a burial shaft. All of this evidence has caused researchers to question whether Pӧmmelte may have been used for human sacrifice. The site was used for 300 years before it was destroyed around 2050 BCE.

Amazingly, Pӧmmelte wasn’t discovered until 1991, when it was spotted by aerial photographers after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
