This Woman Made a Wig Out of Her Shower-Drain Hair

There are many reasons that women lose their hair. It can happen with age, hormonal changes, or because of genetics or having naturally thick hair that thins itself on a regular basis.

Whatever the reason, there’s a good chance that you – or anyone else that uses your shower – have made a joke here and there about how you could make a whole wig out of the hair that clogs up your drain.

You probably would never have thought to actually, you know, do it – which is how you and Liz Lele are different.

The background actress (extra) from Brooklyn has been as bored as the rest of us during the mess that is 2020, and while stuck at home, she decided to start collecting and counting the hair she loses in the shower (or at other times, like when she brushes her hair).

She told Buzzfeed that she “started keeping track, collecting hair that came out randomly, or from brushing or washing my hair.”

Healthline says it’s normal to lose between 5-100 strands a day, and even though Liz was collecting that easily. She kept going, wonder how much she could save over time.

“After a few months, it became the size of a hair extension.”

The accomplishment (?) had her thinking about making an entire wig to donate, but she knew that would take a long time at her current collection rate.

So, she asked other people to donate. Her hair collection has risen to around 4,000 individual strands.

Even with people sending their own hair, and more of Liz’s falling out every day, she thinks it will take about a year to have all of the hair she needs.

We’re all finding ways to keep busy, I guess, and if you – like Liz – don’t get easily grossed out by hairs that aren’t attached to heads, maybe you could try making a wig out of your shower hair, too?

Just remember to wash it first.

A Video Demonstrates How Easy It Is for a Person to Spike Your Drink

It’s a lesson all young people should learn before they start going to bars and parties where alcohol will be served: always keep your eye on your drink and never, ever take a drink from someone you don’t know.

I’ve heard way too many horror stories from people who had something slipped into their drinks and that’s when really bad things happen.

And a woman named Mell Hall took to TikTok to illustrate just how easy it is for someone to spike your drink. Hall shows a bunch of different examples on her video about how simple it is for predators and creeps out there to pull this off.

Hall said,

“I would have been happy if just one person would have walked away from watching this video and decided to be more vigilant and build safer habits for themselves.”

She added,

“To my surprise, it looks like millions of people are going to re-evaluate how they protect themselves and those around them!

People have been so generous in the comments and have jumped in to give personal anecdotes and share how they keep themselves safer when they go out.”

So, basically… you need to be VERY careful and MUCH MORE vigilant.

Watch Hall’s video very carefully and see how hard it is to even pick up on what she’s doing when she drops the kernels into the drinks.

It’s pretty scary how fast it happens.

@renaissancewomanhood

Reply to @ivanp19 I feel really icky after doing that… even if it wasn’t real? #besafeeveryone

Please remember to be vigilant and be extra careful when it comes to your drink when you’re out at bars or at parties. As Hall just showed us, it’s very easy to slip something in and a lot of people never notice…until it’s too late.

Have you ever had any experiences with someone trying to do this to you or a friend of yours in a bar before?

If so, tell us what happened in the comments.

We’d love to hear your stories. Please and thank you!

A Post Urges People to Replace “Moms and Dads” With “Grown-Ups”

Families come in all shapes and sizes.

This is something we were told as children, and it’s something many of us reinforce with our own kiddos, but there are still so many ways the world assumes that “parents” are “mom and dad.”

As I’m sure we’re all aware, some kids don’t have a mom or a dad. Some only have one. Some have two of one and none of the other.

This Instagram post reinforces the idea that, by using the term “moms and dads,” teachers and other adults, need to do more as far as remembering to be inclusive and welcoming of all types of families.

The post uses a screengrab of a tweet from Sirry Aland, PhD.

“Teachers, your class convos are broadcasted in everyone’s homes. The # of times the teacher has said ‘your mom and dad’ to my kid’s class is infuriating. But a BRAVE kid just said… ‘But I only told my grandma at lunchtime because my sister and I live with our grandma.”

Little sweetheart standing up for everyone like him, who was probably annoyed and a little confused about why the teacher was acting like his family wasn’t a real family.

The post encourages everyone who works with children to consider saying “your grown-ups” instead of “your mom and dad,” or “your parents.” It’s a simple switch but, like with everything new, might take some getting used to.

I know we can all do it, though, because if we work with kids, we care about kids – all of them, regardless of their situation.

As the post also points out, adult language and the way adults embrace a reality can make all of the difference to a little one still trying to make sense of things.

Give it a try; I know I will!

Here Are the Two-Year-Old Milestones That Really Matter

As parents, especially if it’s our first time in the trenches with our own baby, all milestones can seem enormous. We worry about whether our kids are meeting them, and to us, every last one of them is important.

I hope, though, that you have a pediatrician like mine, who constantly remains calm and shrugs and reminds us that every child is different, and develops on their own path and at their own speed.

If you’ve got a little closing in on age two (I do!), here’s what experts say you need to worry about – and the stuff they say you can let go.

To the latter point: speaking simple sentences, running, filling and emptying a bucket…those are all things that are great, but not necessary to assess how your two year old is developing.

Instead, experts say to consider these two milestones when assuring yourself that your child is doing just fine:

#1. How much and how well they move.

Can they walk? Run? Climb steps, manage slides, and generally keep up with the other kids at the playground?

If so, that’s a great sign, even if you frequently find your heart in your throat.

If your child can’t walk, I assume you already spoke with your doctor at their 15 or 18 month appointments. If you notice their gait becoming uneven or them choosing to walk on their tiptoes, you’ll want to address that, too.

If your kid is just cautious, though, it’s probably not an issue. Not every kid with space is going to run, and not every kid who looks up at a big kid slide is going to be in a hurry to get to the top.

Give them time to practice, and the encouragement to develop some confidence, before you worry caution means trouble.

#2. How much they push for independence.

As frustrating as it can be, your child pushing boundaries and asserting their independence is a great sign. Your two year old should have their own opinions, should tell you “no,” often, and stick to their guns about what they want – even when it’s not what you want.

They should also be able to follow directions, of course, and to point to things you ask them to, as well as mimic your words.

If your kid isn’t using two-word sentences, or if they’re disregarding you and what you’re asking them all the time, cognitive delays could be at play. Go with your gut.

If you and your pediatrician decide it’s run-of-the-mill defiance, don’t bother punishing them – it’s developmentally appropriate, so just remain firm and guide them through it.

The first of many battles to come.

Good luck with your two-year-old bubs, y’all. I’m hoping potty training is coming down the pike sometime after his birthday – finger’s crossed!

This is What Happens to Kids When You Let Them Go Barefoot

We’re a “shoes optional” family. We don’t wear shoes in the house, and despite the dog poop landmines, wooden deck, and potential for stepping on a bee, if it’s a warm day, you’re as likely to find my kids outdoors without shoes as with.

Same goes for in the house, though we do opt for socks on cold days!

But while baby and toddler toes are impossibly cute, the temptation to buy almost-equally adorable tiny footwear is definitely there. We buy babies shoes to take those first steps, thinking that it must be easier to walk with shoes on…but it turns out, that way of thinking is flawed, because studies show that walking barefoot is beneficial for a child’s development.

In their early years, a child’s sensory system is growing and changing all the time. Their brains are learning to grow, learn, and adapt, and being able to use all five senses simultaneously is the best way to encourage the process.

Our sense of touch is often seen as less important than the others, but anyone who has ever heard the term “sensory bin” knows that for toddlers, it’s definitely on par with the others.

There are two sensory systems that are super important for little, developing brains – the vestibular system and the proprioceptive system – and walking barefoot helps improve both.

Proprioception is the ability to understand motion and how it relates to our body’s positioning. Receptors in our muscles, joints, and other tissues send signals to the brain, while the vestibular system helps with coordination and balance, along with our center of gravity.

With shoes on, kids aren’t as able to receive input for the proprioceptive system, and input for the vestibular system is diminished, as well. Without tactile sensations, the feedback is muted, the sensors unstimulated – think of what it feels like to walk barefoot in cool grass, to wriggle you toes in the sand, and things like that.

It’s great, it’s new, it gets your neurons firing on whole new levels, and that’s exactly what developing babies and toddlers need.

So if it’s a safe space, even if it’s not entirely clean), forgo the shoes. It will be winter soon enough, and you’ll have all kinds of chances to show off those adorable kicks.

I promise.

The Truth About Your “Washed and Ready-To-Eat” Vegetables

Between our work schedules, family obligations, keeping the house in some semblance of order, putting food on the table three times a day, running kids to school and activities, there just isn’t a ton of time to spare.

Especially if we also want to keep up with what everyone else is somehow finding the time to watch on Netflix.

So when someone offers us a shortcut, like produce that’s been washed and dried and is clean and ready-to-eat, we’re more than a little tempted to fork over the extra cash in exchange for the convenience.

Today ran some tests on those “ready-to-eat” vegetables and compared them to similar results on regular (less expensive) options and found that there’s a considerable amount of bacteria on the produce, regardless of the price tag.

In fact, they found that the produce that claims to have been washed contained more bacteria spores, in most cases.

Glen Pinna from Biotech Laboratories compared ready-to-eat lettuce with pieces of fresh lettuce, and broccoli with the already cut and washed florets.

The “washed” lettuce contained 9.5 million microbes per gram, compared with 470,000 microbes per gram on the loose lettuce, and the cut and washed florets contained 850,000 microbes per gram compared to around 280,000 on the unwashed heads.

Pinna went on to explain his thoughts on the findings:

“The conditions they’re creating is really promoting the growth of bacteria.

Anything that you’re chopping up and putting into a bag and sealing and not holding under five degrees, those bugs are going to increase.”

He advises buying fresh produce, and when it comes to green leafy vegetables, definitely giving them a wash yourself in order to reduce the number of microbes that could not only potentially cause illness, but cause the food to spoil.

Surprisingly, when it comes to fresh fruit, he said tests show that washing them does essentially nothing to decrease microbes – no word on how it affects pesticides, though, so my berries are still getting a dunking.

Does this surprise you? It does me, a little bit, but I’m certainly glad for the knowledge.

As one of the aforementioned busy parents, if I can’t save time, I’m most definitely up for saving money!

It Might Be Healthier For Men To Pee Sitting Down, According to Science

Even from the youngest of age, sitting down to pee when you could do it standing up is apparently something people with penises resist.

I get that it’s probably way more fun to aim, or pee in circles, or whatever, but listen up males: it turns out there are actual health reasons to sit down on the pot.

Urologist and professor Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt says that goes double for older men who might be beginning to experience prostate issues. In fact, sitting can help men empty their bladders more effectively if their prostates are large and they need to help relax the pelvic muscles in an effort to help push the urine out.

Being able to fully empty your bladder can reduce the risks  of cysts and other health complications associated with enlarged prostates.

Doctors and scientists aren’t totally sure what causes the prostate to enlarge in aging males, though since men without testicles rarely experience the phenomenon, it’s likely connected in some way to hormone levels.

It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re at an elevated risk for prostate cancer, but the enlarged prostate on its own can cause medical issues. But here’s the thing… most, if not all of those issues, can be relieved by sitting down to pee. Yeah, it can be THAT simple.

And if you’re young (under 50), there are other reasons to start sitting – mostly hygienic.

Physicists (yes, they actually studied this) have found that peeing standing up significantly increases the velocity of the stream and potential for splatter, which leads to truly disgusting, bacteria-filled bathrooms.

Dr. Brahmbhatt adds his two cents on the matter,

“There are men that have bad aim and can soak the toilet with splatters of urine.

Sitting and urinating on the toilet does increase your odds of making sure the urine is actually going down the drain.”

I mean, why not just go ahead and start practicing for the big transition on your 50th birthday now?

Your wife, and your bathroom floors, would be delighted.
