People Break Down The Most Random Science Facts

I love science.

Although I hated it in high school, now that I’m old… I mean an adult, I love it.

Why you ask?

Because the more science you learn, the more you can understand what’s happening around you and live better.

But science has sadly been under attack for the last several years.

So let’s be our own Bill Nye and absorb a bit of science for our own good.

Redditor Look_Under_The_Bed went to Reddit for all the best science on offer and asked:

“What’s a random science fact that you know?”

So let’s talk science…

You never know when you’ll need to spit out some random facts to impress people at parties.

And if nothing else, we’ll be better prepared for Jeopardy!.

Cry me a River…

“When you cry really hard, your nose runs because it’s connected to the same pipes as your tear ducts, so your nose is also helping you get your tears out.” ~ Threspian

“On a similar note, your nose runs when it’s cold out because you have created a heat gradient.”

“Warm air can hold more water than cool air so as you exhale, the water condenses at the end of your nose and so your nose runs.”  ~ wolfmoral

LOOK OUT BELOW!!!

“Squirrels can survive falling from terminal velocity.”  ~ terrariapro117

“I learned this after witnessing a squirrel hit the ground after a presumably long fall.”

“It made a loud SMACK as it hit the ground, scared the crap out of me and the dog, then scampered away, up another tree like nothing happened.”  ~ _cocophoto_

Time after Time…

“Time is slightly slower between higher altitudes and lower altitudes, to infinitesimal fractions of a second.”  ~ Redditor

“The designers of the GPS satellites had to compensate for this, since the entire system is built around ridiculously precise timekeeping.”

“It was calculated theoretically first as a consequence of general relativity, and then confirmed experimentally.” ~ Murgatroyd314

 Strength in opposing directions…

“Muscles can only contract. Muscle tissue can’t push.”

“Doesn’t sound like a big deal until you realize that actions like sticking your tongue out of your mouth are completely the result of pulling, not pushing.” ~ fd1Jeff

“I teach anatomy. Always fun to watch students work through this information for the first time.”

“That is a series of pulling and relaxing and the opposite movements are also pulling and relaxing.”

“i.e…triceps vs biceps.”  ~ Warlock2017

2 every solar system turn…

“Venus the only planet to spin clockwise.” ~ siglawoo

“Sun’s axis rotates a full turn about every 27 Earth days but since the Sun is not solid but a ball of plasma the rotation speeds are different at different latitudes.”

“At the equator it’s surface rotates faster, every 24 days.”

“Another fun fact: the orbital plane of the planets is tilted about 7 degrees in relation to the Sun’s axis mentioned above.”

“This should not be the case because of the way planets form around a star.”

“Astronomer’s suspect that the orbital plane of the planets tilted as a result of the gravity of a large planet size object that is no longer around.”

“Existence of this planet is hypothetical so it was given a name Planet X (or sometimes Planet 9). Other anomalies had been observed that could also suggest existence of such an object.”

“Example: grouping of planetoids on the outskirts of the Solar System.”

“The reason that the planet hasn’t been observed directly is that it’s so far away beyond Neptune that it doesn’t reflect enough sunlight to be seen with available technology.”

“Another proposed explanation for the orbital plane tilt is existence of a nearby planet-sized black hole which orbits the Sun but hasn’t been detected yet.”

“The new James Webb space telescope that will be launched soon should help to answer those questions.”  ~ aykontakt

“Makes you wonder. What if something hit Venus?”

“In Dynamics if two objects hit each other and their center of gravities aren’t along the path each was traveling, one will spin clockwise and the other counterclockwise.”

“Maybe Earth and Venus are the same size because we’re the result of two roughly similar sized objects hitting each other in space. Idk.”  ~ detectiveDollar

Within Reach…

“You’re closer to space than you are to anything more than about an hour’s drive away.”

“Most folks take “space” to be “outside of Earth’s atmosphere.”

“There’s no precise boundary to where Earth’s atmosphere ends and space starts, but a lot of people take the Kármán line to be as good a point as any to split atmosphere vs. space.”

This line is 100km/62 miles up, which is roughly the distance your grandma can drive in an hour on the highway.”  ~ meatfrappe

I see the resemblance…

“Tyrannosaurus was closer in time to Humans than to Stegosaurus.”  ~ jsreyn

“That explains why my arms are so short.”  ~ TransientFeelings

“Haha same! When I sit on a chair, I never know what to do with my arms.”

“If I put them on my legs near my hips, I end up slouching because I can’t sit straight and put my hands on my thighs.”

“So I cross my arms and then people say I look defensive.”  ~ Zealousideal9151

Human Waste in Orbit…

“If you bleed more than 100ml/min on the international space station, they write you off and say any medical supplies spent on you is a waste.”

“It’s been years since I saw the article but I believe the only plan at that point was ‘get the astronaut to earth ASAP’ which, you know… isn’t done in a few minutes, soooo.”  ~ Wit-wat-4

Square cut or pear shaped…

“Diamonds aren’t forever. In fact, they are dust at 500 degrees in your oven for a few hours.”

“Diamonds aren’t pressure/temperature stable at the surface. If you heat them without also applying incredible pressure, they become CO2 and a little pile of carbon.”  ~ Driftmoth

Veggies keep you level…

“If you ever get a cut and it won’t seem to stop bleeding chances are you’re low on vitamin K as it’s the one that helps your blood clot. Vitamin K can be found in most vegetables.”  ~ orion284

“Especially leafy greens! Which is why people on warfarin (and certain other anticoagulants IIRC) need to be mindful of their greens intake… ideally.”

“They should eat them only in moderation and aim for the same amount every day to keep their warfarin levels stable.”  ~ sheepthechicken

Always Sunny, Everyday

“The sun rises on the ISS every ~90 minutes which is the time it takes to orbit the earth and so astronauts experience about 16 mornings everyday.”  ~ pseud0human

I feel like my IQ points just jumped exponentially.

There is definitely enough information there to make me look a tad more sophisticated at parties.

There is no such thing as useless knowledge! The more you know, the more you grow.

Maybe I should write for Hallmark…

Anyway, knowledge of science can be fun and keep us from making foolish mistakes or bad decisions.

Remember that kids.

What’s a Good Cheap or Free Hobby To Get Into?

Why is everything so dang expensive these days? Even the hobbies you can do at home add up super quick, it seems.

Keeping up with the latest gaming can cost a lot, and even TV watching has become prohibitively expensive again for many as we’re asked by a billion companies to sign up for endless individual streaming services to watch what we want.

There’s gotta be some cheaper stuff to do, right Reddit?

What hobby do you enjoy that’s cheap/free? from AskReddit

Not to worry, they’ve got some ideas!

1. Cooking

Cooking can be a pretty cheap hobby.

I mean, you have to eat anyway, might as well enjoy the processes of making your own food.

– Ointenso

2. Writing

I actually have honest talks with myself through writing.

You’d be amazed how much reading your own thoughts can help you.

– Loozka

3. Hiking

Hiking.

Find parks or trails in your area and check them out.

There are a lot of cool places to explore.

– NilsaPhilip

4. Working out

Working out.

Even when stuck indoors self isolating or whatever, there is a lot of stuff you can do without any equipment.

Body weight stuff like press ups, squats, sit ups etc.

– Flygon_S

5. …this!

Chess.

– Xseros

6. Cross Stitch

Cross stitch! Basically pixel art on fabric.

You can get a ton of patterns online for free or just a few bucks, and the thread/fabric for a first project usually runs $5-10 and will keep you busy several hours. (You can buy a beginner kit at any hobby store.)

It’s what I do to unwind every night and I’ve had some beautiful results if I may say so. ?

– Andromeda321

7. Reading

Reading.

Books are generally cheap and nowadays you can even find lots of classics online for free

– Jorgensen01

8. Embroidery

Embroidery – while there are lots of tools and fancy equipment you can get if you get really into it, it’s one of the cheaper crafts to get started with.

You just need some fabric, a hoop, some needles, and some embroidery floss – you can get started with about $10.

I bought one kit to see if I liked it and then used the leftover materials plus a piece of scrap fabric to start making my own designs.

– goose_juggler

9. Rock collecting

Looking at rocks, collecting rocks, using sandpaper and labor to polish rocks.

– Aninternerloser

10. Arrowhead hunting

Arrowhead hunting.

I think it’s neat to find something that humans made that hasn’t been touched in hundreds or thousands of years.

I live near a river in the Midwest (U.S.) and the farmer’s fields along the river tend to have a good supply of stone-age tools/weapons.

Always get permission first though!

– Dan_mcmxc

11. Homebrewing

Homebrewing.

It’s not necessarily cheap/free, but I was going to spend the money on good beer anyway, so I might as well make a hobby out of it. Once your initial equipment investment is done, you’re just paying for ingredients, which are pretty inexpensive (around 75 cents per beer on an IPA for 5 gallon batches, cheaper for less hoppy styles).

At the low end you can be into the hobby for around $100-150, and for a high quality setup you’re talking $3-500. Ingredients cost me $30-40 per 5 gallon batch, which means I’m spending half what I would normally on craft beer. It takes about a year or 2 to amortize your initial equipment costs, and at that point you’re playing with house money.

Granted, with higher-end equipment there’s basically no upper limit to what you can spend on this hobby, but that basically only applies if you’re someone with gear acquisition syndrome.

It’s also helped me cut my alcohol consumption down (at least since the holidays), because at this point I’m trying to only drink what I brew, which means fewer trips to the beer store just because I feel like it. It’s also a fun creative outlet for me, I probably spend as much time planning my brew days and designing recipes as I do brewing the beer itself.

– duffman13jws

12. Coin roll hunting

Coin Roll Hunting r/crh

You buy rolls of coins from the bank, search them for rare dates, old coins, errors (ie double strikes, off-center strikes), silver coins (in rolls of dimes/quarters/halves), foreign coins.

Then you either roll them back up or bring to a coin counting machine. The only cost is the coins you keep.

– theshoegazer

13. Foraging

I do foraging/wildcrafting in the last few years. So far my only expense was 10$ garden gloves for dealing with extra mean plants. On the contrary, it supplies me with a supply of herbal teas, spices, and [depending on the season] fruit and vegetables and various goods made from them – including ones that are way above my budget, had I bought them in the grocery store.

Caution 1: please avoid eating or using wild plants unless you are 100% certain you know what they are and how to handle them correctly.

Caution 2: Please harvest responsibly. Don’t take more than you need, and make sure not to damage plants along the way, and leave enough of the plant and/or patch to recover and grow again the next year. Leave struggling plants, protected species and nature reserves alone.

– With_Trees

14. Fishing

Fishing.

There’s people that’ll spend thousands but if you have a fresh or saltwater access nearby, it’s an inexpensive hobby to get into that’ll keep you entertained.

– Growbigbuds

15. Reddit

Scroll through Reddit trying to find new hobbies and enjoyment but not actually getting anywhere.

– GiantGeorge14

Sounds fun, I may just have to give a few of those a try!

Sam’s Club Unveils Annual Party Floats and People Are Excited

I remember going to Sam’s Club when I was young and being mesmerized by all the giant containers of pickles and mayo and cereal.

My parents got a massive deal on a case of ice pops that were, unfortunately, made with real fruit juice and not Otterpops.

But the point is, Sam’s knows “big” best.

They specialize in enormous.

So is it any wonder that every year they release their new line of “Member’s Mark” party floats?

Made to fit a half dozen adults, presumably hanging out at the lake or the ocean rather than a backyard pool, last year’s offerings included a massive airplane.

They also made a float shaped like a boat, which kind of begs the philosophical question, at what point does a boat become a boat?

Another year, you and your friends could enjoy a ride on a giant swan king.

They call them “Party Islands” and these floats really are practically boats all on their own.

This year, Sam’s is revving up for summer with two automotive-inspired offerings: a sporty blue convertible and a pink limousine fit for an Elvis impersonator.

Retailing for $199.98, the cars are 21 feet long by 10 feet wide, and both are intended to comfortably seat 6 BFFs, with built in cup holders and a cooler for ice.

If the cars are a little too gimmicky for your taste, you can opt for more reclining in the less exciting Paradise Island model.

And if none of this year’s options float your boat, you might be able to snag a deal on last year’s Unicorn Party Island–or the Zebra version that evokes Fruit Stripes Gum vibes.

I personally would have lost my mind for this kind of stuff when I was a kid.

But we did have one of those big alligator floats for our pool (sans actual gator).

So are you all in for a weekend at the beach with your best pals and one of these insanely large floating loungers? Tell us what you think in the comments!

But it isn’t always easy to find the perfect match for both of you. Lucky for everybody, there’s a very long and helpful list compiled by the people of Reddit based on this prompt by user HornedOwlsNest:

What is the best video game for couples to play? from AskReddit

There are over 20 thousand comments, so we’ll whittle it down to a few gems for ya:

1. Unravel 2

Unravel 2 is super relaxing and cute.

Bought it to play with my wife, she doesn’t really play games but she enjoyed the first one.

– boogieboogie

2. Borderlands

Borderlands split screen is great.

My husband and I always argue about getting the best loot and guns.

– Fandangojango

3. Divinity Original Sin 2

Divinity Original Sin 2 was perfect for me and my ex since we are both into D&D.

– Jurelover

4. Dead by Daylight

My SO and I play Dead by Daylight as survivors.

We get frustrated together when the killer is good, and we cheer together when the killer is bad. Perfect bonding experience…

– NihilisticMind

5. Broken down by taste:

If your SO is into action games: Borderlands, Sniper Elite, Left 4 Dead. Also Battle Royales.

If your SO is into non-violent games: Stardew Valley, Factorio, Minecraft, Terraria, Starbound, Don’t Starve Together, etc.

If your SO is not used to videogames: Story driven games you can play together such as The Red Strings Club, Oxenfree, Life is Strange, Telltale games in general.

If your SO is into board games/party games: Monster Prom, Tricky Towers, Town of Salem, etc.

Would also recommend: Dungeon of the Endless (coop tower defense dungeon crawler) and The Escapists 2 (silly prison break sim)

– TheDanibits

6. Crusander Kings 2

If your partner doesn’t leave you for marrying your hot pagan daughter then your relationship is true.

Also holds up in game

– Basil-II-of-Rome

7. Pokemon GO

I’ll probably get some hate for this but Pokemon Go, you basically go out for walks to random places with your girlfriend and you catch rare Pokemon together

– TannedCroissant

8. Fallout

Not as a co-op, but it’s fun to play something like Fallout and let your significant other pick all the decisions, dialogue options, and where to go next.

– archaelleon

9. A gallery of gaming:

Here are the games my BF and I play, most of the games we play are PC games and we play with controllers. […]

Overcooked – My guy and I love it. It is challenging, silly and fun.
It is also a coop style game so you NEED to communicate, plan and support to be able to complete some of the super hard levels.
Supports up to 4 players.

Cuphead – OMG hard, side scrolling shooter game done in the style of 1930’s cartoons (hand animated, and a Netflix show coming out soon).
I suck at it but we still have fun with it.
For up to 2 players.

Lego games (Xbox 360)
Fun, nostalgic, story based and lots of game options.
We are currently playing Lego Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Various emulator games
We have played arcade games on emulator, last one was TMNT arcade, later got to play the actual machine at a convention and beat it.
We have even played games that are older than us (both 37).

– ceanahope

10. Mario Odyssey

Playing as Cappy is actually pretty fun.

– madtrippinfool

11. Breath of the Wild

My GF and I are currently playing through Breath of the Wild.

She’s pretty new to gaming but she loves the exploration, climbing, hunting, and gathering resources/loot.

Whenever she gets in over her head in a difficult fight, I’ll take over and deal with the bad guys.

– Commander_Guts27

12. Two strong suggestions:

For a game where either can be badasses but together is better, Dynasty Warriors.

Most Warriors games that are multiplayer fits this.

For a game where teamwork is crucial, Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

– nybx4life

13. Fortnite

It’s not technically “co-op”, but my girlfriend and I used to play fortnite together.

She was the mouse and I was the keyboard. That shit was a riot when we had to fight and communicate just to move.

– PM_ME_YOUR_REARPUSS

14. Old fashioned fun:

My gf isn’t much of a gamer, but we play L.A. Noire. I do the driving and shooting, etc. and she loves the crime aspect and trying to figure out how to solve said crime and who is guilty and what not.

That and we also play Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune on the switch if you’re into that stuff.

Lastly, check out jackbox party pack. You play with your phone and it’s great for multiple players too.

– tHeNiGhTmAnCoMeTh413

15. Minecraft?

Minecraft, you can put your beds next to each other… haha jk… unless? ??? – CreamyFappucinno

You know what they say: the couple that plays together, stays together.

There’s a Giant Ice Labyrinth in Poland You’ll Want to Get Lost In

There’s an “ice labyrinth” in Poland that looks incredible.

BEHOLD!

View this post on Instagram

Snowlandia – Śnieżny labirynt 2020?

A post shared by Snowlandia (@snowlandia_zakopane) on

Snowlandia is a sort of winter amusement park located in Zakopane, a region on the southern border of Poland.

While they offer other attractions like sledding, skiing, and a “mini zoo,” their main attraction is an enormous maze, constructed of snow and ice and containing all sorts of hidden treasures.

The maze was first constructed in 2015, and has to be rebuilt each year.

It takes a crew of 50 people about a month to put it together, and sudden temperature spikes can reverse a lot of work quickly.

The structure owes its design to Derek Pytlik and Artur Haber, and takes around 60,000 snow blocks to complete.

It’s a big draw for tourists, especially ones with kids.

So bundle up, and don’t get lost.

A lot of folks refer to it as the “biggest” or “largest” maze of its kind, but we can’t find anything official to back that up.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest snow maze was created in Manitoba, Canada, and the largest ice maze was in Buffalo, New York.

Your guess is as good as ours as to what the difference is between those categories…

Getting lost in the cold isn’t most peoples’ idea of a good time, but this is tempting.

Would you brave the great Ice Labyrinth?
