Tom Hanks Discovered That Mister Rogers Is His Cousin

Call it a twist of fate or destiny, but actor Tom Hanks recently found out that and Fred Rogers (aka the beloved Mister Rogers who spent decades entertaining children on public television) are sixth cousins.

Ancestry.com revealed the information, to which Hanks said, “It all just comes together, you see.”

The news is particularly interesting because Hanks plays Fred Rogers in the recently-released film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which details the friendship that developed between Rogers and a journalist named Tom Junod who wrote an article about the television host for Esquire magazine in 1998.

An Ancestry.com spokesperson said, “Fred Rogers and Tom Hanks are sixth cousins sharing the same 5x great-grandfather … who immigrated from Germany to America in the 18th century.”

Hanks’ wife, Rita Wilson, said, “No, impossible! You’re pulling our leg.”

It only makes sense that one of America’s favorite actors would play one of the country’s most-beloved public figures…and be related to him. What are the chances?

Fred Rogers hosted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood from 1968 until 2001, focusing on themes of kindness, charity, and being a good friend and neighbor to everyone. Rogers died in 2003 at the age of 74, but his legacy and continues to inspire people all over the world.

Rogers is so well-regarded that there is now a holiday honoring him in his native Pennsylvania every May 23.

Take a Look at the Trailer for the Upcoming Tom Hanks Film About ‘Mister Rogers’

Fred Rogers (1928-2003) has been gone for 16 years now, but his memory and legacy is being kept alive by his legions of adoring fans. And now Hollywood is helping out as well.

Mister Rogers already got the documentary film treatment with 2018’s critically acclaimed Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, and now Tom Hanks will star as the iconic television host in the upcoming film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

The film is based on a 1998 article by Tom Junod for Esquire magazine. Junod’s article detailed the effect Rogers had on millions of fans (and Junod himself) because of his kindness and optimism.

From the reactions on social media, it looks like people are going to need a whole lot of Kleenex to get through this film.

Tom Hanks looks to be the perfect choice to play Fred Rogers, doesn’t he? A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood also stars Matthew Rhys, Chris Cooper, and Susan Kelechi Watson.

Fred Rogers hosted his famous television program from 1968-2001, and I think it’s pretty safe to say he made an enormous impact on people all over the world. Rogers’ home state of Pennsylvania even has a holiday to honor the man himself. 1-4-3 will now be celebrated every year on May 23 as a statewide day of kindness.

The film is set to open on November 22, 2019. As the person said in one of the tweets above, go ahead and take my money. NOW.

15 Quotes from Mister Rogers That Will Remind You There’s Still Good in the World

If there’s anything we can all agree on in these extremely divided times, it’s that we need more people like Fred Rogers in the world.

And to commemorate the new documentary about Rogers, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, here are 15 quotes from the man himself.

1.

“As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has – or ever will have – something inside that is unique to all time.”

2.

“There is no normal life that is free of pain. It’s the very wrestling with our problems that can be the impetus for our growth.”

3.

“I hope you’re proud of yourself for the times you’ve said ‘yes,’ when all it meant was extra work for you and was seemingly helpful only to somebody else.”

4.

“It’s not the honors and the prizes and the fancy outsides of life which ultimately nourish our souls. It’s the knowing that we can be trusted, that we never have to fear the truth, that the bedrock of our very being is good stuff. That’s what makes growing humanity the most potentially glorious enterprise on earth.”

5.

“It takes strength to acknowledge our anger, and sometimes more strength yet to curb the aggressive urges anger may bring and to channel them into nonviolent outlets.”

6.

“When I was very young, most of my childhood heroes wore capes, flew through the air, or picked up buildings with one arm. They were spectacular and got a lot of attention. But as I grew, my heroes changed, so that now I can honestly say that anyone who does anything to help a child is a hero to me.”

7.

“There’s no ‘should’ or ‘should not’ when it comes to having feelings. They’re part of who we are and their origins are beyond our control.”

8.

“The really important ‘great’ things are never center stage of life’s dramas; they’re always ‘in the wings.’ That’s why it’s so essential for us to be mindful of the humble and the deep rather than the flashy and the superficial.”

9.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

10.

“Please think of the children first. If you ever have anything to do with their entertainment, their food, their toys, their custody, their childcare, their health care, their education – listen to the children, learn about them, learn from them. Think of the children first.”

11.

“When I say it’s you I like, I’m talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed.”

12.

“It’s our insides that make us who we are, that allow us to dream and wonder and feel for others. That’s what’s essential. That’s what will always make the biggest difference in our world.”

13.

“Love isn’t a state of perfect caring. It is an active noun like ‘struggle.’ To love someone is to strive to accept that person exactly the way he or she is, right here and now – and to go on caring even through times that may bring us pain.”

14.

“There are three ways to ultimate success. The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.”

15.

“I hope that you’ll remember/ Even when you’re feeling blue/ That it’s you I like/ It’s you yourself/ It’s you, it’s you I like.”
