Chick-fil-A’s First Restaurant in the U.K. Is Already Closing

This is some bad news for popular chicken chain Chick-fil-A: less than a month after the fast food company opened its first location in the United Kingdom, it is already closing down.

The British shopping center where the restaurant has its only UK location has been pressured by an LGBTQ rights group called Reading Pride to rethink their decision to allow Chick-fil-A on the premises. And it looks like people behind the Oracle Shopping Center listened.

Chick-fil-A is known for its anti-LGBTQ attitudes, and it looks like some folks in Reading did not want to welcome the franchise to town. To show their feelings, groups protested outside the Oracle Shopping Center in Reading.

In 2017, Chick-fil-A donated over $1 million to anti-LGBTQ groups. The protests caused the shopping center to reverse course and not renew the lease for the restaurant after it had only been in business for a week.

A statement from the shopping center read as follows: “We always look to introduce new concepts for our customers, however, we have decided on this occasion that the right thing to do is to only allow Chick-fil-A to trade with us for the initial six-month pilot period, and not to extend the lease any further.”

Chick-fil-A has about 2,400 locations in the United States. In 2012,  said, “We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that … We want to do anything we possibly can to strengthen families.”

So there’s no mystery where Chick-fil-A stands on this issue, in case you were wondering.

An Instagram Influencer Gave a Bad Yelp Review to a Restaurant That Wouldn’t Accept “Likes” as Payment

This “influencer” culture is really pretty confusing, and I’m not sure I understand it completely.

Or that I want to understand it.

And here’s another perfect example of why I feel that way (and maybe why you do, too).

A Yelp reviewer who claims to have over 11,000 Instagram followers (is that even impressive?) wrote a negative restaurant review because the establishment wouldn’t give them free food or drinks.

Yelper is mad because restaurant didn’t them free meal in exchange for potential IG exposure from trashy

Does that sound like an entitled person, or am I completely crazy and living in an alternate universe?

The person said in the review that they thought the food and the service was great but ultimately a 1-star review was warranted because, “I thought she would be greatful [sic] for the free advertising but when the check came there was literally no discount at all. I thought at least one of the entrees would be taken off but they didn’t even take off the calamari or even the drinks!”

The review was posted on Reddit (it looks like it’s been taken down from Yelp) and other Redditors offered up their own stories in response.

“I work at a hotel near Disneyworld, where rooms can reach 300+/night. It shames me how much we comp and how much ass we kiss for bloggers, “influencers” (whatever the fuck that is), social media personalities, etc., only to have the same losers condescend and treat like shit the employees of the hotel. They are a blight.”

“I also work at a hotel where the rates are 300+/night. We tell self-described “influencers” to get fucked.”

“Just so you know, big thing now is to try to pass yourself as an influencer to get discounts and free stuff. You don’t even really need to be one; you just need to tell people you are. Mikey Chen from Strictly Dumpling admits that even before he became a blogger, he’d hound hotels and airlines to get a discount and exploit his status as an influencer.”

Yikes. Not cool.

Do you have any personal stories similar to this while dealing with a so-called “influencer”? If so, please share them in the comments so we can all vent together.

A Man Paid off the Entire School Lunch Debt for 400 Kids in His Town

Children should never go hungry in the United States, but the sad fact is that it happens every day to thousands and thousands of kids. And sometimes we forget there are actually things we can do to help – but there are.

Andrew Levy, a real estate agent in Jupiter, Florida, decided to take things into his own hands after he saw a list detailing the outstanding lunch debt owed by 400 kids in 9 schools in his area.

The debt totaled $944.34, which is not so much, all things considered. Levy decided to pay the entire debt off for the kids and their families.

One man in Jupiter, Florida, decided that he could make a difference in his town by paying off the lunch debt for every child in the system.

Posted by 5NEWS on Monday, October 14, 2019

A woman in Jupiter named Angie Vyas-Knight got the ball rolling when she shared a post on Facebook talking about the school lunch issue and how kids were going hungry. She then got the local stats from the Palm Beach County school board and compiled a list outlining the debts. This list eventually reached Andrew Levy, who said, “I thought that’s crazy. Food is something you shouldn’t have to think about. Children shouldn’t learn hungry.”

After he paid off the debt, Levy started thinking about the issue in a bigger context. Levy realized that many more kids in his area, not just in Jupiter, need help paying for their school lunches. In fact, students in Palm Beach County, a district with more than 180,000 students, currently have an outstanding lunch debt of $50,000 .

Levy said, “I’m going to do either a GoFundMe page or a fundraising page that can raise money every quarter, so lunch debt never accumulates so that children never have to worry about a hot meal and parents never have to worry about paying the bill.”

If you want to help out, visit the district’s website to get more information.

Unfortunately, this is a major issue that many school districts have to address. We can only hope that more people like Andrew Levy will step up to the plate to help out the kids in need.

It’s called thinking BIG!

Check out These Creepy ‘People Pies’ and Various Other Disturbing Baked Goods

If you’re looking for something a little different this Halloween (or maybe for your wedding or a birthday party), you should definitely check out a company called Guy Meets Cake.

Andrew Fuller is the man behind their macabre creations, and the designs are so cleverly and skillfully rendered that they really aren’t for the faint of heart. Take this one, for example.

Posted by Guy Meets Cake on Friday, September 7, 2018

How would you like to bust that out during a fancy dinner party and see the look on your guests’ faces?

Fuller fully admits he has a fascination with Ed Gein, a murderer and grave robber from Wisconsin who was the inspiration behind such films as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silence of the Lambs, and Psycho. Gein was known for digging up graving late at night and making furniture, masks, and other knickknacks out of the bones and flesh of the deceased.

Fuller said of Ed Gein, “Listen, don’t kill people. I don’t condone it. But he was creative and that left quite the impression. Dark though it may be, I would’ve made a beautiful lampshade.”

Fuller said he has to be thorough when he bakes his creations: “You have to be strategic with size and proportions when you make them, because they are dough. You have to consider how much certain details may expand or warp during baking.”

Let’s take a look at some more of Fuller’s edible masterpieces, shall we?

Milkmen Are on Their Way Back, Thanks to Millennials

Ahhhhh, the good old days.

Milkmen delivering the milk, cream and butter for the household early each morning was one of the more charming features of the 1950s.

Then, like all cool things, milkmen fell out of favor. It somehow became more convenient and less expensive to buy our dairy at the grocery store.

But here’s something else you can blame on – or credit to – millennials. They don’t want to go to the store and buy big plastic jugs of milk.

They are bringing back the milkman.

Millennials are always looking at ways to live with less waste and plastic, even if it costs a little more.

Companies in London, in particular, are seeing a big uptick in customers signing up each month to have fresh milk and other dairy delivered, and most new customers request glass bottles.

Glass can be reused up to 25 times, and it’s completely recyclable. Plus, cold milk belongs in glass, don’t you think?

The London milkman are also learning more about what their customers need and want. They’re starting to deliver artisanal food items too, like bread and local honey, all before breakfast. Milkmen are iconic but they also want to be relevant to their communities and of service to the modern family.

Most of these new customers are young families with children. To them, the milkman provides the experience of delivered, fresh, cold milk in a bottle, while reducing plastic waste.

Sometimes, the old-fashioned ways really are butter…better.

Good News! You Can Build a ‘Gingerbread’ House out of Oreo Cookies!

It’s a time-honored winter tradition to make holiday-themed houses out of cookies and frosting. Now there’s a brand new type of cookie house that is, frankly, making gingerbread houses look very boring in comparison. The Oreo Holiday Chocolate Cookie House is here, folks, and it comes in a ready-to-use kit.

The Oreo Holiday Chocolate Cookie House kit comes with pre-baked chocolate cookie pieces, pre-made icing, and of course, plenty of miniature Oreo cookies. There are also some fruity gummies and candy jewels to decorate your house to true Christmas-y perfection (I know, it’s October, but the thing was released, and it’s AWESOME, so get over it).

The kit is available for $10 at Big Lots, or you can buy a mini version for $6.

“Get the family together this winter for some afternoon fun!” the item’s description reads. “This kit includes everything you need to build and decorate your very own OREO holiday chocolate cookie house. Just open the box and start building!”

Gingerbread houses are great and all, but man, doesn’t an Oreo house sound amazing? It’s basically a giant house-shaped Oreo. What’s not to love?

Shoppers have also spotted the kits at select CVS stores. Christmas is still many weeks away, so hopefully as the holiday gets sooner, these kits will start popping up at more locations.

Traditional gingerbread houses aren’t always the tastiest, especially once they’ve been sitting out for days. But an Oreo house? Probably won’t remain uneaten for long.

A Beekeeper Turned Thieving Bears into (Unpaid) Honey-Tasters

If you’re a person of a certain age, then there’s a good chance the characters from Winnie the Pooh are near and dear to your heart.

Which also means that you’ve been aware for basically your whole life that bears really, really love honey.

Like Pooh, giant bears will go to great lengths to get to honey they’ve sniffed out – and even though the ensuing videos may be adorable to the masses, for to bee farmers…not so much.

The bears can cause damage to hives that can cost thousands of dollars to repair, so most keepers work hard to keep them away. But when Ibrahim Sedef’s ideas of putting up metal cages and leaving out different bear-fare like bread and fruit didn’t work, he had a rather adorable lightbulb moment.

Maybe the bears could be brought on as quality control.

Beekeeper turns honey-stealing bears into taste testers #FACTS AUG. 29, 2019 – These #bears just wanted a little smackerel from the honey pot. And #beekeeper Ibrahim Sedef is using their honey-loving palates to his advantage Sedef, an agricultural engineer in #Turkey, is constantly trying to protect his hives from the many sweet-toothed bears in his neighborhood, on the country’s #BlackSea coast. His efforts got downright scientific when he began experimenting with various tactics to divert their paws away from his liquid gold Ever the scientist, Sedef eventually decided that if he couldn’t beat them, he could at least learn from them — particularly their expert taste for #honey So he set up a night-vision camera on his bee farm, and laid out a table with five varieties of honey for the bears to taste test Sedef told Turkish outlet DHA that the bears, in fact, had a very refined sense of smell that led them first to the rare Anzer honey from the Ballıköy plateau region, which they slurped up the most. According to Ahval News, the Turkish honey goes “1,000 liras ($171) per kilo,” and is considered “among the most expensive honeys on the market.” #Anzerhoney is the most famous of all Turkish honeys, said to be, of course, the best honey in the world Of course, New Zealanders say manuka honey is the best, Australians say it’s berringa honey, Indians say it’s Maharishi honey, Russians say it’s Bashkir honey, Arabs say it’s sidr honey, Malaysians say it’s gelam honey or tualang honey and the list can continue. Basically each country can pretend it produces the best honey in the world #FOODNINFO #FOODNETWORK #FOODANDWINE #TASTY #TOPCHEF #LEFOODING #huffpostgram #HUFFPOSTTASTE #EATER #LAEATS #EATERDENVER #NETFLIXFOOD #CHEFSROLL #chefsofinstagram #SAFOODIE #EATERLA #DISCOVERY #NATURE #ANIMALPLANET

A post shared by FOOD AND INFO (@foodninfo) on

He installed photo trap cameras that could track the bears roaming his farm, mostly at night, and then set up a table topped with labeled bowls of different kinds of honey.

It worked.

The bears didn’t disturb the hives, since the honey was ready and waiting, and now Sedef – and the rest of us – know which honey a true connoisseur would prefer.

It turns out bears have expensive taste, because they devoured the Anzer honey first – it goes for around $150 a pound in Turkey – while leaving the cherry blossom honey untouched.

Now you know that the “good” honey really does taste much better – even the bears agree that you get what you pay for (even if they’re not technically paying).

Panera Fired an Employee for Exposing How Their Mac and Cheese Is Made

Do you like Panera’s mac and cheese? I sure am. It’s the highlight of my meal when I go.

But recently you may have seen a viral TikTok showing just how it’s cooked – or, rather, reheated. Many viewers have expressed their dismay, but the shocks don’t end there: the employee was fired for her video!

Ok, let’s put aside the employee being fired for a second (just a second, I promise). Reheating (and cooking) food in food-safe plastic bags is actually a pretty standard method. If you aren’t familiar, sous-vide (the fancy name for cooking food sealed in plastic in a water bath) is a five-star chef way of cooking. In fact, there is a whole system behind it.

“Sous-vide is a cooking technique that utilizes precise temperature control to deliver consistent, restaurant-quality results. High-end restaurants have been using sous vide cooking for years to cook food to the exact level of doneness desired, every time.”

You can buy a fancy sous-vide setup for your home, or you can give it a low tech go by following these three simple steps – once you gather the right pot and thermometer you are ready.

1. Attach your precision cooker to a pot of water and set the time and temperature according to your desired level of doneness.

2. Put your food in a sealable bag and clip it to the side of the pot.

3. Finish by searing, grilling, or broiling the food to add a crispy, golden exterior layer.

This technique distributes heat at an even temperature around the food, giving it exact “done-ness.” Forget the scorching, or overcooked noodles – it’s consistent results, every time.

The only thing that could be wrong about Panera’s technique? How about a flash broil on the top to make the cheese bubbly? Cause, come on.

Ok, back to the employee being fired.

While Panera won’t comment on “personnel matters,” the employee posted this followup video:

And frankly, I think it was a missed opportunity – instead of firing their employee, they should have played it up to the media like, “Hey, we serve sous-vide mac and cheese just like Michelin chefs!”

Because corporate America doesn’t need to keep doing shady stuff to cover up shady stuff.

Just sayin’.
