This New Breed of Apple Stays Crisp for up to a Year

Apples are the perfect snack to have in the house – tart and tasty, they’re great for baking, in yogurt, or by themselves…until the day you go to grab that last apple and find that it’s mushy and overripe.

Well, science is thinking it can help make that disappointing moment a thing of the past with these new “Cosmic Crisp” apples.

The Washington-grown hybrid was bred at Washington State University and is a cross between Enterprise and Honeycrisp apples. Researchers began working on the patented breed in 1997, and now, over 20 years later, it’s officially ready to hit stores.

According to reports, the Cosmic Crisp apples resist bruising and browning better than any other kind of apple. It also has an extremely long storage life – to the tune of around six months in a regular fridge. In a suitably controlled atmosphere, the apples can stay nice and crisp up to a full year.

Which means that not only will you not have to deal with mushy, past-their-prime apples, you also could have in-season fruit pretty much any time of the year you’d like.

The long shelf life also means less waste in the long run, but what about taste?

Well, a 2012 report published by the American Society for Horticultural Science claims that a control group of consumers rated the Cosmic Crisp apple higher than Fuji in the categories of sweetness, sourness, flavor intensity, crispness, firmness, juiciness, and overall acceptance.

The creators even boast that, if you’re baking with the apple, you should be able to reduce the amount of sugar your recipe calls for.

If you’re curious, the whitish specks on the apple’s skin earned it its name – Cosmic – and allow the apple to exchange gases with its environment.

Isn’t science kind of a miracle all on its own? I certainly think so!

Here Are Some Weird Fast Food Items from Around the World

Have you ever eaten at a fast food joint in a foreign country? It can be a little…off. Just kind of weird if we’re being totally honest.

Don’t believe me? Let’s take a look at the evidence.

These responses come to us from the Buzzfeed Community.

1. Pizza Hut – Cheeseburger-Stuffed Crust

Cheeseburger Crust Pizza via Pizza Hut and McDonald's

Posted by Kirk Tinsley on Wednesday, April 15, 2015

“I love burgers as much as the next person, but Pizza Hut decided to go above and beyond by adding 10 of them to their pizza crust. This was introduced in the Middle East in 2012, and it later expanded to other places, like the UK.”

2. Burger King – Mac ‘n’ Cheetos

“You know the deal here: Fried mac ‘n’ cheese that’s coated in Cheetos dust. They initially came with a side of ranch for all of your dunking desires. This menu item was added nationwide in 2016, left for a little, but then made a comeback in 2017. They even added a “Flamin’ Hot” coating as well.”

3. McDonald’s – Gracoro Burger

“The patty consisted of a breadcrumb crust that was stuffed with macaroni, shrimp, and white sauce.”

4. KFC – Double Down Dog

“Originally introduced in the Philippines in 2015, the Double Down Dog was basically just a hot dog with fried chicken as the bun. In fact, this was an iteration of their Double Down sandwich: a bacon and cheese sandwich that had two pieces of fried chicken acting as the bread.”

5. Taco Bell – Cap’n Crunch Delights

“Cap’n Crunch Delights were added as a Taco Bell breakfast item in the United States in 2015. They were basically little pastries that were coated in fruity Crunch Berries cereal. The best part? The center was filled with a “sweet milk icing.” I’m drooling.”

6. McDonald’s – Chicken McDo with McSpaghetti

“This one is pretty self-explanatory: You’ve got a piece of fried chicken and some spaghetti with marinara and cheese. McSpaghetti was actually introduced (and quickly discontinued) in the United States in the 1970s. It was then brought back internationally (specifically in the Philippines) in the early 2010s.”

7. KFC – Cheese Donut

Posted by KFC on Friday, November 29, 2013

“KFC Indonesia decided to combine two interesting things in 2013: donuts and cheese. Their standard donut was topped with shredded Swiss and some sprinkled-on cheddar. No comment.”

“The Double Sensation pizza debuted at Pizza Hut locations in Singapore in 2012. It was promoted as a “pizza within a pizza” and actually had two rings of crust on it. The pizza was also topped with several cheeses, veggies, meats (including chicken sausage, turkey, smoked chicken, and ham), and even an Alfredo sauce.”

9. Burger King – Kuro (Black) Ninja Burger

Posted by Hedge School of Applied Economics on Friday, May 22, 2015

“In the early 2010s, Burger King Japan based this burger on an anime character. It consisted of two black buns, their regular beef patty, a hash brown, and a special sauce. Oh, and it also had a giant piece of bacon sticking out of it to look like a tongue. So casual.”

10. Burger King – Premium Berry Burger

Japan Burger King's Berry Burger. Tasted good.

Posted by Michael Thomas on Tuesday, December 30, 2014

“It’s exactly what it looks like. Burger King Japan released this burger, which was topped with berries and a sweet cranberry, blueberry, and blackberry sauce. This was a seasonal menu item that was introduced at the end of 2014.”

Those are pretty weird, if I do say so myself.

Ancient Watermelons Tasted Awful. So How Did We Get to the Delicious Summer Treat?

Refreshing slices of watermelon on hot, summer days are one of the best treats of the season. But it wasn’t always like that.

In ancient times, no one wanted to eat a fruit that tasted as bad as those old, pale melons.

So, how did we get from a fruit that was so unappealing and bitter, to the flavorful, ruby-colored delight watermelon is today?

Archaeologists have found wild watermelon seeds and other evidence of their presence in ancient tombs (including King Tut’s) across the continent of Africa, dating back to as long as 5,000 years ago.

But why? The fruits they grew were nasty.

According to Harry S. Paris, a horticulturalist at the Agricultural Research Organization in Israel, the reason for growing the unpalatable melons and putting them in tombs with pharaohs is because of their water content. Egyptians liked to give them to livestock to keep them hydrated in arid conditions.

For the same reason, the melons were included in tombs: to keep pharaohs quenched in the afterlife.

As those still in the land of the living also needed water, it’s likely that travelers would take some watermelons to use as water bottles—a predecessor to the modern day Hydroflask, if you will. As travelers moved across the continent, dropped watermelon seeds spread the fruit.

Eventually, the Greeks got a hold of the fruit. They would cook and eat it, but they also used it as medicine. Pliny the Elder thought it made an excellent laxative.

One can only imagine.

Greek physicians also like to place rinds on the head to ward off heat stroke, which I can see working to some extent.

As they were selectively bred over the next few centuries, watermelons got sweeter and pinker. Paintings of feasts throughout the ages began to show dark pink slices of watermelon staged along with figs and pomegranates. And voila! We arrive at today.

Super glad we didn’t just give up on them. Summer wouldn’t be as sweet without watermelons.

This Is How People Are Dealing with a Vegan Influencer Who Is Suddenly Eating All the Meat

Over the past 5 years, social media influencers have experienced a meteoric rise. All you need to get started is a cell phone, some captions, and a lifestyle or line of products, though the competition for finding an audience has gotten pretty fierce.

Some people, like lifestyle influencer Alyse Parker, have built massive followings full of people who not only take their advice, but trust them to be who they say they are online.

So, what happens when people like Parker do a 180, betraying the hundreds or even thousands of people who took them at their word?

Well, in the case of her forgoing a vegan diet for one that’s entirely made up of meat, people are understandably upset – and feeling duped.

By this point, you probably know that I looove trying new things, running little experiments, and diving into challenges of all sorts.⁣ ⁣ Some of the experiments I have run in the past…??‍?⁣ – 30 days without shampoo⁣ – 1 year without deodorant ⁣ – 21 days of only fruit juice⁣ – 30 days without social media⁣ – 3 YEARS of not shaving my armpits, not wearing makeup, not using heat on my hair.. Etc. etc. you get da point ??⁣ ⁣ Yehhh — some may call me crazy.. ?⁣ ⁣ But I’m a firm believer in experiencing things first hand + getting a real feel for what something is all about before I form a personal opinion on it.??⁣ ⁣ The Carnivore Diet first came into my awareness when a close friend shared with me all of the benefits that he was experiencing by eating this way. ⁣ ⁣ Coming from being vegan 4.5 years, I was hellla resistant to the concept of eating ONLY animal foods (aka only meat, seafood, + eggs)⁣ ⁣ I didn’t make ANY sense to me. It actually sounded pretty f*cking ridiculous. ?⁣ ⁣ But oddly enough, I started to hear story after story from my fellow vegan friends jumping ship, testing out the carnivore diet and experiencing amazing health transformations.⁣ ⁣ I was so confused.??⁣ ⁣ But I had my own fair share of health struggles and eventually reached a breaking point where I was willing to try anything to function properly again. ⁣ ⁣ With an online community of 800,000 people ~ many of which were primarily showing up for my vegan related content… I was a bit conflicted to say the least. ⁣ ⁣ But I knew I needed to make decisions based on what was in the best interest for my health.⁣ ⁣ I swallowed my pride + decided I’d give it a shot. Full onnn carnivore. I woke up the next morning feeling more mentally clear, focused, wholesome, and healthy than I had felt in years.⁣ ⁣ God bless. ⁣ But also, WTF?⁣ My vegan identity crumbled immediately. ⁣ ⁣ This past year of my life has been a journey of remembering who I am separate from what I eat. ?⁣ ⁣ In hopes of challenging others to step out of their current perspective ~ I documented my newest challenge of eating only meat for 30 days.⁣ ⁣ Video launches next week. ⁣ Who’s ready? Comment ? below!

A post shared by ALYSE PARKER ⚡ (@alyseparkerr) on

“The Carnivore Diet first came into my awareness when a close friend shared with me all of the benefits that he was experiencing by eating this way,” Alyse wrote. She also said she “woke up the next morning feeling more mentally clear, focused, wholesome, and healthy than I had felt in years.”

Nicole Zach, a fan from Chile who began a “successful vegan lifestyle” after following Alyse, told Buzzfeed News that though Alyse had been an “inspiration,” the announcement left her cold.

“When she announced she was eating meat again I couldn’t believe it. She used to be so devoted to veganism,” Nicole said. “She can do whatever she wants of course, I just hope this change of diet and lifestyle doesn’t affect others. I would hate to see some of Alyse’s followers getting confused and considering eating animals again.”

A (former) fan named Haley is disappointed, too, and told Buzzfeed News she’s embarrassed that the blogger is part of her personal journey.

“Up until [Alyse’s latest Instagram post] I would still reference her and be proud that she inspired me. However, now I feel as though I listened to a hypocrite,” Haley said. “Considering much of her product and basis of her career is on health and helping the environment, I do not think she has a care for anything besides herself.”

Alyse is not alone, either. Recently, vegan influencer Yovana “Rawvana” Mendoza was caught eating meat while at a restaurant, and the fact that she was hiding it instead of just telling the truth created extra rub.

And while some followers understand that people are allowed to change their minds, and that health reasons can come into play, more and more feel like Nicole and Haley – like they were lied to, and like they’ll never be able to trust something people say online again.

Which is all the more reason, I suppose, to live your life the way you feel is best for you, and take with a grain of salt how others live theirs.

Just a thought.

This Is Why Drinking Alcohol Makes You so Hungry

Have you drank a few cold beers only to be left salivating for some salty french fries or a hot slice of pepperoni pizza? Whatever your adult beverage of choice is, you can blame science for your grumbling stomach the next time you’re out drinking.

According to a 2017 study by the Francis Crick Institute, consuming alcohol does have a direct effect on your hunger levels. Over the course of two years, scientists studied the effect of ethanol alcohol on the body, brain and actions of mice, with the results lending a useful insight into why we get the munchies.

The experiment consisted of giving mice between 1.5 to two bottles of wine over a three-day period. Interestingly, the alcohol caused AgRP neurons located in the hypothalamus to become increasingly active. Though the mice experienced an increased appetite, their metabolism and energy levels dropped.

“Our study clearly shows that the main area of the brain responsible for eating (the hypothalamus and its AgRP neurons) is directly affected and excited by ethanol, and that mice respond very strongly to its exposure by overeating for several hours afterward,” the co-authors of the study explained.

After repeating the study but blocking the AgRP neuron signals, the scientists found that the mice ate less. Ultimately, those AgRP neurons may be the culprit behind binge eating after binge drinking.

These results suggests that the more you drink, the more you will crave food (not exactly news to someone like me). What is important is to avoid binge drinking, which the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines as a pattern of behavior that boosts blood alcohol concentration above .08 grams per deciliter.

The authors caution against binge drinking in order to avoid one of the dangerous effects of binge eating: obesity.

“Binge drinking and obesity are typically thought of as two separate societal problems, but why does this happen all over the world and what is making us do this? It is too easy to believe that one cannot lead to the other, and that this correlation does not involve the brain somehow,” the authors wrote.

Plus, alcohol has a pretty high caloric content, too.

So the next time you’re out at the bar or club, make sure to keep track of how many drinks you have. Those two-for-one specials can lead to some serious consequences for your waistline if you’re not careful.

You Can Now Buy Pickle-Flavored Lip Balm

You need lip balm in your life, especially in the dry winter. Lip balms usually come in the same few types of flavor — vanilla, berry, and mint are typical.

But if you’re looking to branch wayyy out from those, there’s a new pickle-flavored lip balm that may appeal to you.

The new lip balm is formulated to taste just like dill pickles, and it comes from BluePoppyBath, a seller on Etsy. Aside from the bizarre scent and flavor, the lip balm is similar to other natural lip balms. It comes in a push tube and contains nourishing and moisturizing ingredients such as cocoa butter, shea butter and vitamin E.

The item description says the pickle lip balm “sounds weird” but is “strangely addicting!”

Pickles are one of those food items that one can easily become obsessed with out of nowhere — BluePoppyBath even recommends the lip balm as a pregnancy craving gift (that’s probably why so many pickle novelty items exist).

In addition to pickle lip balm, there have been a ton of other weird pickle-flavored items over the years, like pickle ice cream, pickle candy canes, pickle vodka, pickle mints, pickle marshmallows, and pickle cotton candy. The list is basically endless!

But unlike these pickle-flavored foods, pickle lip balm will stay on your lips for a while, so you can enjoy that pickle-y goodness for as long as possible.
