Some Folks Think Chocolate-Covered Pickles Are a Good Idea

I will be the first person to say that dipping pretty much anything in chocolate is a good idea. Chocolate is delicious and ranks right up there with coffee when we’re talking about foods that sustain life, but listen.

There is no way that chocolate and pickles go together unless you’re pregnant or are experiencing some sort of similar hormone imbalance, and I honestly don’t see how anything could change my mind.

There are people who feel differently (there always are), though, and so if you think you’d like to bite into a vinegar-y, wet pickle covered in chocolate, you’re definitely going to get your chance.

Malley’s Chocolate is bringing their boxes of chocolate-covered pickles back for a limited time, so I guess now’s the time to grab one if you’re so inclined.

If you’re basing your decision on what people have had to say about the product on social media in the past, well…that might not work.

Reviews tend to be a bit mixed, but more than a few of them agree that while they enjoy chocolate, and they enjoy pickles, the combination isn’t something they’d run out to buy again.

That said, this is a repeat offering from Malley’s, and the novelty can’t push sales forever, so maybe there are secret hordes of chocolate pickle lovers out there.

Or pregnant women are stocking up to last the entire nine months.

If you happen to be near a Malley’s retailer, maybe just try them to say you did – and then let us know how it turned out.

The products are too fragile to be shipped, so the rest of us are out of luck.

Fast Food Workers Share the Best Items Not On The Menu

For most people, fast food is a part of our lives.

We keep busy, running from place to place, or maybe the idea of fixing dinner for everyone again just to hear them say it’s gross is enough to send you running to the nearest McDonald’s.

Whatever the reason, most of us find ourselves in a drive thru now and again.

If you’re tired of your old staples and looking for something new, these 16 employees have come up with some pretty amazing offerings that you won’t find on the menu.

16. I’m definitely going to try this at home.

Worked at KFC and the biscuits come frozen. We would put them in the fryer instead of the oven and they were the most delicious, dense buttermilk donuts.

Drizzle on some honey and they are awesome!

15. It’s a mad world.

Made some pretty interesting blizzards at DQ. However a customer ordered the most bizarre item by far. A Chili cheese shake. He came in asking if we could do it as his friend bet him nobody would make one, but if he could get a place to make it, he would eat it.

Ordered a large which was 32 oz. I had the pleasure of making it. However we didn’t get to see the guy eat it. I bet it was gross.

14. Sounds like dollar signs to me.

I used to work at Wendy’s. We poured this special strawberry flavoring that was supposed to be used for a fruity drink into a vanilla frosty.

Stirred it up, it tasted amazing.

Take overproofed, unusable dough, rip it up, deep fry for a couple minutes, cover in cinnamon sugar.

When I worked at Wendy’s 2013 , my favorite lil stoner snacks were a Vanilla frosty Mixed with two pumps of the vanilla syrup for the iced coffee – tased like a Birthday cake milkshake, my

Wendy’s also had breakfast so I would take the premade burritos and fry the contents on the grill – toss out the nasty tortilla on it – add it to the artesian breakfast bun we had – added the hollandaise sauce.

For lunch it would be something along the lines of a bacon cheeseburger with the cheese sauce mayo ketchup & grilled onions. With cheese fries add jalapeños of course. And if I wanted to add any more carbs to my day. I could finish it off with the fish fillet sandwich made extra crispy – chopped up & put over some well done French fries.

The strawberry lemonade – add in some fresh strawberries & blueberries from the salad bar . Literally we would just try and do anything new to switch it up.

11. Brilliant.

Used to work in a concession stand at a movie theater. One of my coworkers would make chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks, stick them in a hot dog bun and slather it in marinara to make a chicken parm sandwich.

10. He should have patted them on the back!

Not exactly unique but I left a tray of wings in the oven for too long, not burnt but clearly overcooked. Made up a “new trial product” for extra crispy styled wings.

Went great until someone came back the next day and asked my manager if we had more extra crispy wings in stock.

Someone cooked a pizza in the oven just enough to melt the cheese & then deep fried the crust in the fryer by holding it with the funnel cake spatula. It was pretty damn good

8. Write! These! Down!

At Taco Bell we had a LARGE secret menu.

Ninja Turtle – Baja Blast and regular mountain dew, looked cool.

Mastodon – Chalupa shell with hard shell instead, coated in nacho cheese. Made like a Gordita crunch.

Mastodon Supreme – See above with an extra shell, loaded with sour cream, lettuce, tomato, the works.

Churro Special – Back when the soft churros were a thing, we used to make dessert burritos with them. Breaking an apple pie, two churros, grilled.

Everything Nachos – Which was literally everything on the line. Meats, cheese, and all the toppings. Right when the XXXL Nachos released we started doing this.

We would make these for drive through people who knew what they were if they wanted them. I miss that place man. Night shifts were great shifts, and we came up with quite a few more before I ended up moving.

7. They should sell this for sure.

When I worked at Pizza Hut we would make the stuffed crust minus the pizza. It would just be a giant ring of cheese and dough.

Night shift at taco bell was awesome. I always worked drive through cause I was the only one who spoke drunk well enough.

I used to make all kinds of stuff but my favorite was basically just a steak quesadilla but steamed and rolled into a burrito rather than grilled and throw some baja sauce on it

Instead of shaking the cheese powder on the breadsticks, I’d used the cinnamon sugar normally used on the pretzels on them, which tasted amazing fresh out of the oven and worked well the “butter” that you’d swipe on.

The “butter” added the right amount of salt to make the sugar stand out.

Similar to your Everything Nachos, at our taco bell we once created the “Rapture” burrito.

Which included every single thing on the line inside 2 12 inch tortillas, and grilled.

And by everything, I mean everything. Including stuff like empanadas and nachos.

3. Sweet snacks are popular.

When I used to work at a Pizza Hut they had the Hershey’s Dunkers and I thought they were alright, bit too chocolatey for my taste.

But when I would make them I would put down a light layer of cinnamon and about 3/4 of the chocolate topping and then use the icing for dunking instead of the chocolate sauce they had.

2. People would for sure buy these.

Used to work at KFC.

Took scoops of potato and made balls out of them, breaded in the crispy flour/batter and cooked them through on a crispy strip cycle before pouring a little gravy over the top and eating them.

Like big potato gems/ tater tots/ potato meatballs -> depending on where you’re from.

1. I feel like he pitched this idea and got turned down.

I used to be the assistant manager of a Pizza Hut before I had to move. I’d take a medium hand tossed dough, toss it like you aren’t supposed to (lol), and then add teriyaki wingstreet sauce as the base, cheese, chicken, green peppers, and onion.

As soon as it came out on cut table, I’d put the garlic butter on the crust and it would be a stir fry pizza with egg roll tasting crust. It was absolutely amazing and would totally make it again if I could

These sound a little hit or miss to me, but I’d be willing to try at least some of them.

It’s time to hang on tight for another great story from the archives of Reddit’s “Am I The A**hole” page!

And this one has to do with a discarded birthday cake that led to some hurt feelings.

Let’s see what transpired…

AITA for throwing out a birthday cake that was made for me?

“Last week was my (17F) and my twin brother’s birthday.

Our family wanted to throw us a small party and we thought it’d be a great idea since we’ve hardly gotten to see anyone in our extended family for the last year. I was particularly excited because our aunt owns a bakery and makes the most delicious cakes and I wasn’t able to get one last year.

The day of the party comes and my family members arrive. My aunt comes up to me and my brother with her daughter, Averi (9F), in tow. Both my aunt and Averi have a small box in their hands and Averi is absolutely beaming.

My aunt says, “Here are your cakes! I hope you like them!” and Averi immediately chimes in “And I made yours OP!” When my brother opens his box there’s the world’s most beautiful white chocolate cake. Absolutely supreme work by my aunt, it’s even got raspberry filling. My brother’s favorite. I couldn’t wait to see mine.

Needless to say when I opened my box I was quite disappointed. When Averi said that she made the cake she meant it. I don’t think my aunt had any involvement with my cake at all and it showed. The cake was lopsided, the icing noticeably uneven, and looked like it was decorated by a blind and/or drunk monkey that had access to sprinkles.

To be nice I took a bite. Lemon favor, which I detest. Even if it were a flavor that I liked it was dry and could barely qualify as edible. I set it aside, hugged and thanked my cousin for the cake, and continued with the party despite my disappointment.

After the party was over my aunt and mom were talking on the phone and my aunt asked to speak with me. She asked me what did I think about the cake and I was brutally honest. I told my aunt that I couldn’t eat the cake and had to throw it out and that I wished she had made a cake for both my brother and I and just let Averi have her little side project.

Unfortunately my aunt had put me on speakerphone so that my cousin could hear my answer and I gave the worst answer possible. Now Averi doesn’t want to talk to me anymore and my aunt and mom are upset with me. My brother called me and a** and said I should have just said I liked the cake but how was I supposed to know my aunt would put me on speakerphone like that?

Was I the a**hole?”

This Person Is Angry Because Their Boyfriend Puts Things in Their Food They Don’t Want. Are They Wrong?

Never mess with someone’s food!

I believe in this and I think everyone else should, too.

But some people cross that line and, as you can imagine, it’s never a good thing.

Let’s see what happened in this story from a man who shared his story on the “Am I the *sshole?” page on Reddit.

AITA for getting upset at my bf for putting things I dont like in my breakfast?

“I (20M) go to a culinary arts university in America and stay with my bf L(21M).

He is American and an atheist while i’m born and raised a Turkish Muslim. Since we both go to cooking school, we change the cooking chore daily without a problem. Also last bit, i’m a rather progressive person and i cut ties with my uber-religious dad and J knows this.

So onto the story, it was J’s turn to cook and he told me he would make breakfast for the weekend. So Saturday morning (which was my birthday) he comes to my room with some food and blindfolds me saying there is a surprise. Then he says he made something on the table and we walk there. I take a bite and it was pork.

From a pig ofc. so i was of course incredibly aggravated. I took the blindfold immediately and asked why he did this. He was in hysterics and thought this was SOO funny. I told him it was disrespectful and he shouldn’t disrespect my religion.

He scoffed off saying i was overreacting and that i wasn’t that religious anyway so he thought it wouldn’t be an issue.

I’m currently thinking of moving to a new room/house but my brother who i vented to is saying that’s too much of an overreaction so AITA for maybe reacting too much?”

An ER Doctor Went Viral for Pointing Out That Fast Food Is All Some People Can Afford

There’s no question that everything, including food, keeps getting more and more expensive.

Add in a food desert, and people are paying crazy prices for fresh food the rest of us take for granted.

So when a doctor tweeted about the relative costs of fast food compared to fresh food, her thread went viral, with lots of people weighing in on both sides.

Emily Porter is an ER doctor and cancer survivor living in Austin, Texas.

When she tweeted about the cost of food, she was urging empathy and asking people not to judge others, but she had to know it was going to be controversial:

A lot of Twitter users doubted that a medical doctor would eat McDonald’s for lunch, as though they don’t rack up thousands in debt from medical school, and as though they don’t crave fast food like other humans.

But Dr. Porter took the time to explain her background:

Not only did she grow up poor, but she worked on the front lines of poverty, watching others in her community purchase what they could afford at a fast food restaurant.

She even took the time to explain the food desert in her area, and the fact that people basically only shop at the dollar store.

The responses to her tweet ran the gamut. Some came with empathy and agreement, others did not.

Apparently some even suggested that the poor should invest in Blue Apron meals, which surprised me, because meal kits tend to be pricey. They definitely cost more than McDonald’s.

Here was Dr. Porter’s response:

But that is the point of such a tweet–starting a conversation that needs to be had.

Some people argued that fast food eaters were lazy:

To which others replied, it’s not just about the money. It’s about the cost of time and labor too.

Some people even argued that the poor should buy a rotisserie chicken at Sam’s Club or Costco.

Few pointed out that those are loaded with sodium, but some people did point out the absolute tone-deafness of such a suggestion.

Bored Panda said that a major argument, that cooking healthy food is cheaper, isn’t necessarily true.

And unlike Twitter users, they brought the receipts:

According to the results of a meta-analysis published in 2013 in BMJ Open, a healthier diet costs $1.48 more a day, which would add up to $540.20 a year, and for a family of four, the amount would equal to $2,160.80.

The article did note that a UK study disagrees with this assessment, so maybe it’s regional. The UK is very different from the US in a lot of ways, maybe it would generally be less expensive to eat healthier in the UK and not in the US.

A lot of people suggested eating beans.

Many users, however, completely agreed with Dr. Porter’s assessment of the cost of eating.

And they pointed out a lot of things that it’s easy to overlook from a privileged point-of-view.

Like the cost of time…

…the fact that just because something is possible, doesn’t mean everyone has the ability to make it work…

…and the simple fact that fast food is easier to chew than, say, a carrot.

It’s safe to say that there are no easy answers to this question, but one thing is for sure: it’s a frustrating situation that needs to improve.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned for sure as a woman who has been many different weights at many different times in her life, it’s that diets that require you to deprive yourself of everything you love will never work long term.

Human beings want to enjoy our lives, not just live them – with the exception of a few people who would rather be a certain size than enjoy a drink and some dessert with friends, we’re just not going to say no to the “good” stuff our entire lives.

Why Do Certain Smells Like Onion and Garlic Stay on Your Hands After You Wash Them?

If you’ve done any cooking in your life, then you’ve probably noticed that certain foods you prep…linger. The smell of onion and garlic, for example, can be scented days after you’ve made the meal, after you’ve washed your hands multiple times and even showered – but why?

This is the perfect query for Reddit’s No Stupid Question forum, and I don’t know about you, but I’m super pumped that someone actually asked it.

11. The technical answer.

When cut open, onion cells release enzymes which convert its amino acid sulfoxides into sulfenic acid, the effects of which can be felt immediately.

That same chemical adheres to skin and stays there, sometimes for days, until something neutralizes the acid. Soap typically won’t do the trick.

10. Using stainless steel can help take it away.

The sulfur from the onion, garlic or fish is attracted to—and binds with—one or more of the metals in stainless steel. Formation of such compounds is what makes stainless steel stainless. Onions and garlic contain amino acid sulfoxides, which form sulfenic acids, which then form a volatile gas—propanethial S-oxide—that forms sulfuric acid upon exposure to water. These compounds are responsible for burning your eyes while cutting onions, and also for their characteristic scent. The sulfur compounds bind to the steel—efficiently removing the odor from your fingers.

So, next time you find your fingers and hands smelling from fish, onions or garlic, don’t reach for the scented spray; grab a stainless steel knife. Take care, though, to wipe your hands on the flat side, and your limbs will be scentless in no time.

9.  This smell isn’t so bad, though.

Oranges too; gets in the creases of your hands.

8. Get yourself some stainless steel.

So because the smells are caused by sulfur, it turns into sulfuric acid when you wash your hands with water. So the stainless steel basically binds to the sulfur molecules and thus, “washes” away the smell on your hands.

I got a stainless steel soap from the dollar store and they had this explanation on the back of the packaging in terms of the smells being negatively charged ions and the stainless steel being positively charged, so basically positive attracts negative and zoop, your smell goes away.

But I was terrible at Chemistry and last I studied that shit was in 2014, so I don’t know if this ion business is legit. The first paragraph is the actual explanation for sure, though.

7. Because sticky molecules.

Same reasons why some stains are difficult to remove while others aren’t.

The adhesive force between your hand and the particles are strong and possibly stronger than the cohesive force between the particles.

Basically some molecules are sticky.

6. It can happen to your kitchen, too.

If your kitchen smells funky and it’s not the trash or the fridge, give every stainless steel appliance a rub down with salt mixed with baking soda (as long as it’s not a pan), then rinse with warm water. The smells should go away.

Typically kitchens retain scents for reasons I don’t know but this pretty much always works and in the worst case scenario you’ve cleaned the kitchen a little more than you needed to.

5. Moisten. Ugh.

They don’t if you keep some baking soda next to the sink.

Moisten your fingers and rub them with the baking soda after working with onions or garlic and poof, smell gone.

4. The tricks might not work, though.

Most likely not. Sulfenic acids bond covalently to the proteins in your skin, causing them to be released slowly. There isn’t much you can do about that except wait. The chemicals you’d need to reverse that aren’t generally available to consumers/are too harsh to put on your skin.

Interestingly, a lot of lachrymators (compounds that make you tear up) work this way, including some types of tear gas. Generally, highly reactive compounds are dangerous, so your body reacts strongly and tries to get them out of your eyes as soon as possible. Onions exploit this reaction to try (unsuccessfully) to get you to not eat them.

3. Soap doesn’t solve everything.

I see a lot of responses on how to get rid of the smell but not so much on why it lingers.

The reason it lingers is because soap is a surfactant that can remove some things, but it doesn’t work as a solvent for everything.

It’s why lemon juice or baking soda work for cleaning: acids and bases will dissolve some things.

Various foods will and will not dissolve in various solvents.

These Things Are Surprisingly Safe for Human Consumption

I think sometimes we eat a lot of things that we really shouldn’t. As the mother of toddlers, I absolutely know this is true – and as someone who has made more than one call to poison control, I also know for sure that there aren’t as many things that can kill us as you might think.

Here are 15 things you’d probably guess shouldn’t be ingested – but that are, as it turns out, totally safe for human consumption.

15. Not actual peanuts, but…

Some packing peanuts are actually made out of corn starch.

They of course aren’t produced in a food safe environment, and all of the nutritional components like sugars are removed so as not to attract bugs.

But yeah, most styrofoam peanuts are edible.

The ones that aren’t made of corn starch, though, are made of polystyrene, a petroleum-based plastic. So definitely do your research before you decide to sample some packing peanuts.

14. But potentially painful to eat.

Caffeine.

Had a severely alcoholic patient drink two large bottles of Mouth Wash (Listerine etc) every day for about 15 years.

You’d think nearly 10,000 bottles of Mouth Wash would kill a man, but no. At least, not very quickly.

You can eat everything inside of a natural beehive, including the bees. Just don’t get stung!

My roommate didn’t believe me when I got honeycomb from a local farmers market and ate it by the spoonful.

Usually I just crush it to get the honey out then spit out the comb, but I chewed up and swallowed a whole chunk just to prove to him that you could do it.

Charcoal.

Well, not the one you’d buy for BBQs, but medical charcoal has a similar composition and is not only safe, but awesome at cleaning up some unfortunate gastrointestinal interlopers.

When I had my gallbladder removed a few months ago, the doc told me, apropos of nothing, I could eat the stones they let me keep.

I mean, I guess they’re mostly cholesterol, so it makes sense.

Some indigenous tribes eat clay in small amounts due to the minerals and texture.

I have two cousins adopted from a Haitian orphanage. The orphanage basically took lard and mixed it with small amounts of dirt to feed to the kids.

I imagine it was more “filler” than any notable benefits, but still, crazy to think about.

It stains really badly. You can get blue underwear, blue toilet bowl, blue car seats.

(Most people who take methylene blue have bladder control problems)

It’s a general purpose oil for lubrication and rust protection and can be used for metal, wood, and leather.

It’s completely safe to drink, and it even smells like liqorice.

Shellac.

Yes. The stuff they use to seal wood.

It’s used in everything from finger nail polish to candy.

Its secreted by a bug.

Yummy.

Color me surprised (even with those toddlers)!
