A Post Urges People to Replace “Moms and Dads” With “Grown-Ups”

Families come in all shapes and sizes.

This is something we were told as children, and it’s something many of us reinforce with our own kiddos, but there are still so many ways the world assumes that “parents” are “mom and dad.”

As I’m sure we’re all aware, some kids don’t have a mom or a dad. Some only have one. Some have two of one and none of the other.

This Instagram post reinforces the idea that, by using the term “moms and dads,” teachers and other adults, need to do more as far as remembering to be inclusive and welcoming of all types of families.

The post uses a screengrab of a tweet from Sirry Aland, PhD.

“Teachers, your class convos are broadcasted in everyone’s homes. The # of times the teacher has said ‘your mom and dad’ to my kid’s class is infuriating. But a BRAVE kid just said… ‘But I only told my grandma at lunchtime because my sister and I live with our grandma.”

Little sweetheart standing up for everyone like him, who was probably annoyed and a little confused about why the teacher was acting like his family wasn’t a real family.

The post encourages everyone who works with children to consider saying “your grown-ups” instead of “your mom and dad,” or “your parents.” It’s a simple switch but, like with everything new, might take some getting used to.

I know we can all do it, though, because if we work with kids, we care about kids – all of them, regardless of their situation.

As the post also points out, adult language and the way adults embrace a reality can make all of the difference to a little one still trying to make sense of things.

Give it a try; I know I will!

Check Out These Bean Pole Tents People Are Building for Their Kids

I know that some people are already thinking, “dang, parents are going way too far trying to make the experience of childhood magical,” but hear me out.

First of all, everyone is trying to cope the best they can right now, and second – I think half of the “magic” is for the parents themselves, not only for watching their kids’ eyes light up.

And the latest magic to light up everyone’s summer garden are magical bean pole tents.

If this idea intrigues you, make sure and look closely at all of these images, plus watch the video below.

For now, here’s your materials list: poles, twine or string, and pole bean seeds or annual climbing flower seeds.

Your kids can help out, which will teach them about growing and caring for plants, and in the end, the pretty little structures are sure to improve everyone’s summer.

And look at how happy this tot is in her bean bungalow that’s close to being finished…

Now, of course there are those who take this kind of thing MUCH more seriously… and this bean tent is LEGIT.

We have been doing this bean tent for many years now, in the past couple years we have added many herbs around it and used it as the start to one of our little food forest permaculture areas. In keeping with trying to be more permaculture we plwanted Scarlet Runner beans for the first time I would say usually it look more full but it's stilldoing really well hopefully next year I won't have to plant anything there and the beans and dill will run wild together. #citystead #homestead #urbanhomestead #farmstead #mygarden #gardening #gardenlife #homesteadlife #bushcraft #growyourown #growyourownfood #growfoodnotlawns #homegrown #urbangarden #permaculture #foodforest #urbanfoodforest #beantent

Things You Should Never Say to Your Partner in Front of Your Kids

It’s good for children to hear their parents debate, split up chores, make compromises, and even argue, as long as it’s done with respect and apologies are also made public later on.

That said, a stable home and a solid partnership between parents is important to children’s development and emotional well-being, so here are 5 things you should never, ever say unless you’re in private.

5. My body is ____.

Even if you feel uncomfortable or have gained a few pounds, making comments about your weight can have a negative effect on your child’s self-image.

Don’t talk about being “fat” or “skinny,” but it’s ok to say things about making healthy and good choices most of the time.

Your kids are always watching and listening, and they will internalize the messages you post about yourself.

4. You’re too sensitive.

We’re never allowed to tell other people how they can feel.

Saying something like this invalidates the other person’s feelings and tells them they’re wrong to feel upset.

3. You never do anything around here.

Work-life balance, and the unpaid labor we all have to do at home, is a sensitive topic.

In front of your kids, though, you should always strive to acknowledge how each partner contributes in different ways – even if the same person always makes dinner or takes out the trash.

2. I don’t care.

If your partner is asking for your opinion, there are better and more polite ways to say you’re indifferent rather than saying “I don’t care.”

Try to give at least a little feedback.

1. Look what you did.

This phrase makes the mistake into a big deal, which is rude and disheartening to the person who made it. Instead, you can try focusing on a) how the mistake can be fixed, and b) what we can learn from it for the future.

I’d like to think most of us didn’t need to be told, but you never know!

I gotta say, I’m impressed.

What do you want from me?

4. Maybe next week?

Don’t ask me that again!

5. No, don’t worry about it?

Just let it go.

6. Let’s go back to your original question.

In other words, let’s talk about death.

7. Thank you for that.

Very sanitary, don’t you think?

8. Might be time for therapy.

There’s a lot going on here…

9. That IS really cute!

How adorable is this kid?!?!

10. Life not imitating art.

A Stepdad Wanted to Know If He Was Wrong to Try to Protect His Sons From the Reality of Menstruation

Menstruation is a fact of life, and anyone who cohabitates with a female between the ages of 10 and 50(ish) at any point of their lives, for any reason, can expect to have to deal with the entire process on some level.

A fact that apparently didn’t occur to this man or his three older teenaged sons when he married a woman with a nineteen-year-old daughter.

The four of them share a bathroom, everyone gets along great, but this is their first time living with a woman for any sort of time.

His oldest son, 18 (!) came to him and said they were uncomfortable seeing their stepsister’s period products in the trash can in the shared bathroom.

Instead of telling his son it’s a part of life and to suck it up, he talked to his stepdaughter, asking her to dispose of them more discreetly (or flush them, what?!).

He was upset that she laughed it off, and even went on the offensive, and was even more irritated when his wife did the same later that night.

Since he believed it was a real issue, he tried to talk to his daughter again, and was rebuffed with extreme prejudice.

You will not be surprised to find that most on Reddit think OP (original poster) is, in fact, the a**hole here, a judgement that also extends to his sons.

Many people thought he’d missed a chance to help educate his sons on a natural process, and how to be better men.

Others pointed out that the sons seem pretty immature for their age, and never having lived with a woman is really no excuse for not being educated about how to.

And pointed out that it’s best they learn about this kind of thing from a sister, and not after they’ve treated their first girlfriend or wife like some kind of leper.

Others lamented the fact that way too many men are weird about feminine products.

And yeah, I’m sure that girl has more than a few complaints of her own, suddenly sharing a bathroom with three teenaged boys, so I’m not sure they should be the ones complaining.

OP did post an update, in which he admits that his stepdaughter and wife sat them down for an excellent PowerPoint, and that all is well.

They even apologized.

This is about the happiest ending of an Am I The A**hole post I could imagine, and I love to see it!

How would you have replied? Tell us in the comments!
