These People All Joyfully Take After Their Parents

When Charles Darwin was conducting research and piecing together the framework that would ultimately form the bedrock of evolutionary theory, he had one big problem on his hands.

He knew, like everyone did, that humans and animals alike passed traits on from parent to offspring. And he further knew – as fewer had noticed – that these traits give survival advantages and disadvantages in different environments, which ultimately turn little changes in the short term into huge morphs in the long-term.

But what he DIDN’T know what just HOW this was happening. “Genetics” wasn’t a term yet. We didn’t really get the mechanism for HOW we looked like our dad. We just kinda expected that to be the case, and thought it was a sort of magic.

And in a way, we were right. Sure, we’ve got a much better understanding now of genes and DNA and all that jazz, but it IS still a sort of magic to compare yourself to your parents. It’s a bond. And it’s one that these Redditors are reveling in.

People Talk About the Weird Food Combinations They Enjoy

You know what I grew up eating that some folks think is weird?

Well, I’ll tell ya…salami wraps with cream cheese in the middle.

I know it might sound weird, but trust me, they are delicious!

Do you have any weird food combos that other people think are strange?

These folks on AskReddit sure do! Let’s take a look.

1. All about the textures.

“Mac and cheese, then mixed with apple sauce.

I mean, apples and cheese are a very classic mix, so this just works.

I like to mix at the last minute so the hot and cold texture stays too.”

2. Sounds kinda gross.

“Ranch on spaghetti.

It’s really no different than dipping pizza into ranch, but people get grossed out when I do it.”

3. Do your own thing.

“I like mayo on steak and cheese hoagies.

Apparently a lot of people think that is disgusting, but I love it.

I also love putting habanero flakes on steamed vegetables, and horseradish on pierogies and kielbasa.”

4. Your favorite.

“Cinnamon on microwaved grilled cheese was my favorite as a young kid with far too much responsibility over what I ate.

Instant mashed potatoes with American cheese and honey was another big one. (I stopped eating meat at a young age and my mother wouldn’t make separate non meat meals).

In college a friend made me try her nasty looking breakfast and it was fantastic. Egg and cheese on a bagel with cream cheese.”

5. No thanks.

“Dipping raw pasta (usually spaghetti) into butter and eating it.

Crunchy and smooth at the same time.”

6. What?!?!

“Chocolate milk in chili.

Was dared to mix the two when I was in first grade, and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

7. A gift from God.

“But some people I’ve told about it think applesauce and pretzels sounds gross.

I think it’s a gift from God!”

8. For hot summer days.

“Crisp , cold watermelon and feta cheese, especially on hot summer days.

Picked that up on a vacation to Egypt once and fell in love.

But anyone I recommend it to looks at me with disgust.”

9. A strange combo.

“Scrambled eggs with chocolate added.

The chocolate goes great in Coca-Cola too.”

10. NOT WEIRD.

“I always get s**t for eating chips (fries) with baked beans and beef gravy.

It’s delicious but people can’t get their head around it.

Also baked beans straight from the can. That’s another I get b**ched at for. They are already cooked and actually taste better cold.

It’s not weird.”

11. Better than it sounds.

“Salted cantaloupe, bacon, and cheddar cheese in a tortilla wrap.

It is better than it sounds.”

12. Don’t get upset, people.

“Cheese Burger with sauerkraut, no bun.

Just beef patty, melted cheese on top, and sauerkraut on top of that. I might be inclined to add some mustard, but otherwise it’s fine as it is.

Most people don’t like sauerkraut to begin with, but using it as a topping for a burger seems to really make people upset.”

13. Sorry, New Jersey.

“Ketchup on pizza don’t ask but depending on the pizza it tastes like heaven.

Distant screaming can be heard from the direction of New Jersey.”

14. Uh uh.

“I put ketchup on my macaroni and cheese. Or barbecue sauce.

Adds a little tang because macaroni can be a tad boring.

Everyone I know is disgusted by this. I don’t care because it’s f**king fantastic.”

15. An acquired taste.

“I don’t normally tell people about my sardine salad sandwiches because sardines are an acquired taste that most don’t want to acquire.

Sardines, chopped green olives, chopped celery, mayo, hot sauce.

Stir it up until its uniform, then put it between two slices of toast.”

16. Not sure about this one…

“I love to put applesauce on my pizza.

The few people that I’ve convinced to try it love it, but it’s a huge hurdle to get over.”

Okay, it’s time for you to spill your guts…

Tell us about the weird food combinations that you like.

Do it in the comments, por favor!

What’s the Oddest Food Combination You Enjoy? Here’s What People Had to Say.

We live in a free country, am I right?

Darn right!

And that means (among other things) that you can eat whatever you please, whenever you please.

And sometimes people like to get a little bit freaky-deaky.

AskReddit users talked about the weird food combinations they like to chow down on. Let’s take a look.

1. Sounds decent.

“Instant Ramen, cooked without flavor, but then you drain and fry it, adding the flavor during the pan-fry, then slap that b**ch in a quesadilla.

It’s crunchy, crispy, cheesy, noodley, and you can eat it like a taco.”

2. Wasn’t stoned.

“I put red wine vinegar in a lot of food, and people make such a face when I do it.

Like if I CHEF MIKE a bowl of leftover spaghetti, I’ll put like a tablespoon of vinegar over it pre-heating. I like it.

I got the habit from my dad. He put it on canned spinach, and I liked it. So it’s a little flavor enhancer on my meals for one.

I’d say the STUPIDEST food combo I did was when I tried to make a peanut butter and jelly burrito in the microwave.

(I was out of bread, and figured, why not, it’s good on bagels)

Do not microwave a peanut butter and jelly burrito, you will have a bad time.

Also I was six, not stoned.”

3. Hmmm…

“Red wine and black licorice.

I say them in that order because if I start with ‘black licorice and…’

I am usually shunned before I can finish the statement.”

4. Thanks, Grandma.

“My grandma taught me to eat fried egg on toast with grape jelly.

Perfect combo of savory/sweet.”

5. You gotta do it the right way.

“Dipping my ham and cheese toastie into a mug of hot chocolate.

Heavenly, the trick is a very quick dip, the bread will absorb it either way and you want to avoid total sogginess at all costs.”

6. Delicious!

“Feta cheese on a regular hot dog.

I had no idea other people would even consider it gross, it’s delicious.”

7. Interesting…

“Make some spicy ramen noodles, but add the flavor pack in after you cook and drain the noodles.

Add a bit of peanut butter, a dash of lemon juice and sugar to taste.

Throw in some tofu. Gourmet ramen!”

8. Not for everyone.

“My favorite sub is tuna with pickles, black olives, and cheddar cheese, and I don’t think it’s weird at all.

But I’ve literally had the sandwich shop say “gross” after I ordered it so it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea haha.”

9. Just walk away.

“My husband has some interesting combinations but his favorite is ramen cup of noodles with popcorn.

He will eat all the noodles and then dump popcorn into the broth. It gets all shriveled and that’s how he likes it.

I have to walk away.”

10. LOL.

“I used to get peperoni with tuna salad and cheddar w/ banana peppers.

One time the woman asked me if I was pregnant.”

11. Yowza!

“Peanut butter, honey, pickle and goldfish cracker sandwich.

It was something random my son asked for once when he was like 3 and I’ve been eating them ever since.

You can also use Doritos instead of goldfish crackers.”

12. Getting funny looks.

“Strawberry jam and cheese on a sandwich.

I really don’t think it’s that weird but people look at me funny when I say I like it.”

13. Give it a shot.

“Slow-cooked pinto (or black) beans, hot, with some of the liquid, poured over vanilla ice cream. The liquid acts as a sauce, and cuts the sweetness while satisfying like a chocolate sauce might. The beans start hot and soft on cold, firm ice cream.

Slowly the ice cream softens, and the beans freeze, so it offers contrast of texture different in the first bite than it does in the last. There’s a lot going on, but if you try it with beans from a can, you’re wasting your time on disappointment.”

14. Okay!

“BBQ sauce on mashed potatoes.

I don’t do it every time but whenever I have like BBQ chicken with mashed potatoes, I’ll dip them in the sauce.”

Are there any weird food combinations that you like?

Tell us all about them in the comments!

We look forward to it!

Repair Setups that OSHA Might Have an Opinion About

OSHA stands for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which is a government agency.

Their role is to basically look at super unsafe workplace practices – often put into place in order to cut corners or save money – and go “HEY. NO.”

I mean, there are huge thick books full of rules and regulations, but the gist of it is “HEY. NO.”

Which is what any OSHA administrator worth their salt would doubtlessly be saying when they saw any of these situations playing out, which are brought to us by reddit.com/r/osha.

10. Check under the car

I’ve seen enough cartoons to know where this is going.

9. Are you there, God?

It’s me, somebody who’s run out of f**ks to give.

8. Up, up, and away!

There’s no amount of money you could pay me to do this.

7. Chip off the old block

Dude, have you never even watched Fargo?

6. Swing for the trees

I’m not even sure what’s trying to be accomplished here.

5. Torch itt

“No smoking near the gas.”
“What about flame-throwers?”
“Sure, why not.”

4. Holy crap

Father, forgive me, for I have sinned.

3. The hidey hole

Once a year he comes out to tell us all if it will be a long winter.

2. Cat hanger

“Well, it took a lot of effort, but we can finally confirm that these are, in fact, rocks.”

1. The crash

Don’t wanna maybe strap that thing down?

Woof. Nobody tell OSHA. Or maybe do immediately.

Family takes “If I Fits, I Sits” to a Whole New Level With Their Cat

When I was a kid I really liked the idea of tiny rooms. Sure, I had a normal sized bedroom. But inside my closet, there was a tiny door.

Where did it lead? (I don’t know. I think it was locked and led to the pipes.)

And even though I had a room of my own, I longed to have a tiny secret room that no one could go in but me.

Turns out, maybe cats feel the same way. It’s a proven fact that cats like containers.

There’s a reason why “If I fits, I sits,” has become a slogan for cat lovers everywhere.

Even big cats aren’t immune.

And we all know how they feel about boxes.

But could it be that all this sitting in tight places is because secretly, cats want tiny bedrooms of their own?

One family recently found out.

After adopting a tuxedo kitty called Wyatt from a shelter, Bryan Davies really wanted to make the cat feel at home.

His bedroom had a sort of secret, unused cupboard and so Bryan renovated it for his feline friend, complete with cat-sized furniture and pictures on the wall.

It’s the perfect, cozy little container for a cat.

And because Wyatt was an avid birdwatcher, they completed the setup with a wall-mounted tablet for watching YouTube videos of birds and other wildlife.

What a cushy pad!

As Bryan told The Dodo:

“He spends a lot of time in there, asking to watch his show before taking a nap.

He zones out to the screen like a normal teen. And he naps — hard.

He really does enjoy it as much as a kid who finally got his own room.”

It kind of reminds me of a favorite childhood story, the Little Golden Book Home for a Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown.

Not only does Wyatt have a nice little room, but he loves boxes like any cat, and his room has a good deal of symmetry going on.

That’s interesting because, according to a recent study, it’s not just containers that cats love.

Ever wonder why they also want to lie down on your laptop, keyboard, notepad, or book?

Apparently it’s not just to irritate you.

According to this new study, squares and rectangles, the actual shapes are what often attract cats.

The researchers found that cats will actually sit inside an optical illusion of a square, because they like squares so much.

It’s fascinating! No wonder Wyatt loves his little room with its little bed and TV.

What do you think about all this? Does your pet need their own bedroom too? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Sam’s Club Unveils Annual Party Floats and People Are Excited

I remember going to Sam’s Club when I was young and being mesmerized by all the giant containers of pickles and mayo and cereal.

My parents got a massive deal on a case of ice pops that were, unfortunately, made with real fruit juice and not Otterpops.

But the point is, Sam’s knows “big” best.

They specialize in enormous.

So is it any wonder that every year they release their new line of “Member’s Mark” party floats?

Made to fit a half dozen adults, presumably hanging out at the lake or the ocean rather than a backyard pool, last year’s offerings included a massive airplane.

They also made a float shaped like a boat, which kind of begs the philosophical question, at what point does a boat become a boat?

Another year, you and your friends could enjoy a ride on a giant swan king.

They call them “Party Islands” and these floats really are practically boats all on their own.

This year, Sam’s is revving up for summer with two automotive-inspired offerings: a sporty blue convertible and a pink limousine fit for an Elvis impersonator.

Retailing for $199.98, the cars are 21 feet long by 10 feet wide, and both are intended to comfortably seat 6 BFFs, with built in cup holders and a cooler for ice.

If the cars are a little too gimmicky for your taste, you can opt for more reclining in the less exciting Paradise Island model.

And if none of this year’s options float your boat, you might be able to snag a deal on last year’s Unicorn Party Island–or the Zebra version that evokes Fruit Stripes Gum vibes.

I personally would have lost my mind for this kind of stuff when I was a kid.

But we did have one of those big alligator floats for our pool (sans actual gator).

So are you all in for a weekend at the beach with your best pals and one of these insanely large floating loungers? Tell us what you think in the comments!

These Border Collies Replant a Burned Chilean Forest

Herding dogs are smart and high energy.

When we first met ours at a rescue shelter, she was so excited she raced around the yard in circles like a cartoon Tasmanian devil.

That combination of energy and intelligence makes Border Collies the perfect breed for a very special and unexpected environmental task.

Meet Das, Olivia, and Summer:

They live in Chile, where in 2017, fores fires decimated the landscape.

TreeHugger.com described the fires in El Maule in stark terms:

The worst wildfire season in Chile’s history ravaged more than 1.4 million acres early in 2017, destroying nearly 1,500 homes and killing at least 11 people. More than a dozen countries sent fire-fighting specialists to help battle the dozens of destructive blazes.

According to Green Matters, the damage was estimated at $333 million, but the loss of trees and their impact on the environment as a whole is likely immeasurable.

It will take decades to regrow the forest land–but first, new trees must be planted.

Enter sisters Francisca and Constanza Torres and their three Border Collies:

Together, they train the dogs to race across the forest floor wearing backpacks full of native seeds, which they purchase with their own money.

As the sheepdogs run, the seeds spill from holes in their special doggy bags, and spread out where they can begin to take root and regrow the once-lush environment.

It may seem like work to humans, but for the dogs, it’s just a raucous good time.

In an email exchange with Mother Nature Network, Francisca explained:

“They reeeeeally love [it]!! It’s a country trip, where they can run as fast as they can and have a great time.”

And when their bags are empty, the dogs return to their owners for treats and cuddles, and a refill on the seeds.

It’s quite the sight, to see the dogs bounding through the scrub.

And it’s a good thing they have so much energy. According to Green Matters:

This system is also more efficient than having people spread the seeds manually. These speedy canines can race through a forest and cover up to 18 miles a day. Humans, on the other hand, can only cover a few miles each day. These pups can scatter over 20 pounds of seeds, depending on the terrain.

Johnny Appleseed, watch out!

They may not be able to cover the entire forest, but the work these very good girls are doing is already paying off.

The BBC even did a story about them:

It seriously blows my mind to think that two women and their gorgeous pups are changing the world all by themselves and in such a big way.

This Earth Day it makes me wonder, what more could I be doing? What about you? Did your heart just grow three sizes like mine did? Let us know in the comments.

A Kid’s Poem About Online School Went Viral Because It Is Too Real

It’s been a rough year for most of us in a lot of ways.

But there has been comfort in the fact that we were all going through it together–the staying in doors, the wearing masks, the endless meetings on Zoom.

So when one 7-year-old wrote a poem expressing his dissatisfaction with online schooling, literally everyone on Twitter ecstatically agreed.

The child’s babysitter Julia posted the anti ode online last year and instantly went viral.

Here’s the text…

Boring online school
Today is just another day
in a long line of days
staring at a dumb screen
Just boring boring
online school that’s the
only thing that did happen
it’s the only thing that is
happening that’s the only
thing that will happen

So many people commented their concern about the boy that his baby sitter felt compelled to elaborate that he wasn’t depressed or in danger.

She went on to explain that this was an assignment for school, and I personally loved that she described him as snarky, because it feels like something I would have done in college, rather than first grade.

Many of the more literary minded Twitter users were impressed with the artistic nature of the poem.

I’m guessing they were English majors like I was.

Others took the poem and played with it, putting their own spin on the form, such as this one, which distilled the poem down into one perfect Haiku that encapsulates 2020.

While others cleverly compared it to well known classics:

And still others compared it to funny things other children have done, both in the distant past:

And more recently:

The poem evoked a lot of visceral feelings about life amid the pandemic.

It raised debate over the merits of online schooling and the fact that kids generally feel just as bored sitting in a desk in person.

But as someone who loves working from home, and at the same time despises the endless hours of meetings, I felt this poem in the very depths of my being.

As one user expressed so clearly:

What do you think? Did his poem make you feel seen, or just make you a little bit sad for kids these days?

Let us know in the comments.
