10 Things You Need to Know About a VSCO Girl, the New Internet Trend

I thought VSCO stood for Victoria’s Secret Co. and VSCO girls referred to girls who wear sweatpants with the word “Pink,” on them.

Turns out, not so much.

If you are confused, well then you’re probably old. VSCO is trending all over social, and a VSCO girl is…well, it’s a bit complicated. Luckily, I’m here to bring you up to speed and send you on your way with a shopping list of VSCO necessities.

Not interested in becoming a VSCO girl? Well, at least you’ll be educated and won’t look around for Pink sweatpants making a comeback, like me.

VSCO girls are named after the VSCO photo editing app, and they are taking over social media. Actually, they are taking over everywhere. Unlike internet girls of the past who made Instagram their natural habitats, VSCO girls can be seen roaming the city streets and beaches. You will know them by their scrunchies and Hydro Flask water bottle.

They have to have very specific brands, you see, because VSCO girls are often wealthy and conservation-minded.

Love the look or hate it, here’s what you need.

That maybe looks like a joke, but it’s really not. Here’s what you need to get in on the VSCO aesthetic…

1. Carmex, because we are going for the no-makeup makeup look.

2. Sunbum sun screen because it protects skin AND coral reefs.

3. Pastel nail polish so you can peel and stick Redbubble stickers to your phone or Hydro Flask in VSCO style.

4. Extra large graphic tee or sweatshirt that does not show the hem of your shorts.

5. Bathing suits for a summer in perpetuity.

6. Birkenstocks, because they are hippy dippy like VSCO girls!

7. Do not forget your puka shells.

8. When scrunchies aren’t holding your beachy-wavy locks, they are to be worn on your wrist with stacked bracelets.

9. Starbucks tea AND Hydroflask AND scrunchies. This VSCO driver has all the things.

10. VSCO drivers drive Jeeps? Of course, they do.

So, sksksksksk your way to your favorite shopping center and gather your VSCO supplies. Don’t even look at Victoria’s Secret. Then, you’ll be VSCOing in style while saving the turtles.

Leave us a comment below about your favorite VSCO look.

Bananas Are Being Decimated by a Deadly Fungus, and There Are No Good Solutions to Fix It

For roughly 15 years, scientists have been warning the interested banana-eating public about a future without their favorite fruit.

That future is almost now.

The fish and wildlife conservation office of Colombia, known as ICA, recently confirmed the banana-killing fungus was detected in the northeastern area of the country. Called Tropical Race 4, or TR4, the deadly blight causes bananas to contract Panama disease, which causes wilting and splitting in banana plants before finally resulting in a total collapse of the plant. Since the fungus has finally hit South America (it has been in Asia for years), it won’t be long before it spreads throughout the rest of the continent.

The only way to counteract the devastation is to just come up with a new banana. Major banana players, Chiquita and Dole, have been working with scientists on a new TR4 resistant strain of bananas.

But is it too late?

One of the collaborators of the new banana project is Massimo Iorizzo, an assistant professor at the Plants for Human Health Institute and Department of Horticultural Sciences at North Carolina State University. He has been working with Dole on genetic editing with the goal of understanding how genes play a part in disease resistance and then creating a plan to transfer that resistance. An Australian group has already had significant success in this area.

But Iorizzo believes the research got off to a late start. Since the time the pathogen was discovered, no one was interested in finding a disease resistant banana because so many healthy plants existed.

Also, replicating pathogens and conditions and finally getting plants mature enough to study takes years. So while Iorizzo and other researchers are slowly getting closer to their goals, the final genotype of disease resistant banana plant is still a long way off.

If you’re a banana aficionado, you might know that this has all happened before. Back in the 1960s, Panama disease utterly destroyed the beloved Gros Michel banana, so growers replaced them with the less flavorful Cavendish banana (the one we have in grocery stores now). Now, the Cavendish banana is on the TR4 chopping block. It is likely that the fungus will soon take out other types of bananas, too.

In 2005, botanist Juan Fernando Aguilar with the Honduran Foundation for Agricultural Investigation (FHIA) said they were developing alternative bananas as they waited for Panama Disease to take root.

Yet, neither they, nor any other group of researchers, have presented us with their top banana.

And so the public waits, and the bananas keep dying.

10 Sobering Photos from the Great Depression Era

When the stock market crashed in October 1929, the entire country was plunged into a disastrous economic downturn lasting until the 1940s. In those years, families suffered destitution, starvation and breakdowns. It was the worst economic depression the industrialized world had ever seen.

Here are 10 photos that illustrate the devastation of the era.

1. Titled “Migrant mother.”

This is perhaps the most famous of all Great Depression photos. It shows Florence Thompson, a California pea picker, with three of her seven children. She was 32 years old.

2. Memphis 1939, the sign of the Hotel Clark says it’s the best service for “colored only.”

Laws against segregation would not be enacted until the Civil Rights Act, 25 years in the future.

3. A crowd gathered outside the New York Stock Exchange after the crash.

Wall Street panicked and investors were wiped out. The event abruptly started the Great Depression.

4. Unemployed men sleeping in the park in Minneapolis, 1939.

Rampant unemployment led to rampant homelessness.

5. Meal time at the Sioux City, Iowa, homeless men’s bureau for unattached men, 1936.

Boarding houses, rented rooms and shelters were common.

6. Sharecropper’s children in 1935.

Landlords collected government farm subsidies and used the money to mechanize farms, heavily reducing their need for labor.

7. Sharecropper’s wife and baby, Arkansas, 1935.

Sharecroppers were often the poorest of the poor. In response to the mechanization of farms, bad living conditions and unfair terms of their leases, sharecroppers unionized during this time.

8. Children in the tenement district, Brockton, Massachusets, 1936.

Tenements in the major eastern cities, like New York City and Boston, were homes to the waves of immigrants that become the working class.

9. Men sleeping in railroad station, Radford, Virginia.

From out of town and working in the powder plant, they slept in the train station because they had no where else to go.

10. Family from Georgia in tent with neighbor’s child, eight or ten men, two women and two children.

The tent was their permanent home. Men slept in shifts as construction workers in Alexandria, Louisiana, 1940.

The economy didn’t fully recover until the end of World War II with sharp reductions in spending and taxes, and the end of war-time economy. It wasn’t until the 1950s that America began enjoying broadly renewed prosperity. Although poverty and food scarcity is still a problem for many, the levels of unemployment and despair felt by depression era Americans have not been seen since.

You’ll Never Hear the British Royal Family Say These 13 Words – Here’s Why

Social anthropologist Kate Fox revealed which words are banned by the British Royal Family, and, more importantly, why, in her book, Watching the English.

1. Tea

Around the United Kingdom, tea is used to refer to the evening meal. This is considered a custom of the working class. The royals are to say dinner or supper instead.

2. Portion

This is another working class term regarding served food. Upper class society says helping size instead.

3. Pardon

Instead, royals say sorry. Pardon is considered too bawdy. No one in the royal family says pardon.

4. Toilet

Only the French would say toilet near a royal. Royals coyly ask for the loo.

5. Patio

Need some fresh air? Good luck asking about the patio. However, the royal family would be delighted to show you to one of their bazillion terraces.

Photo Credit: Diliff – Own work

6. Lounge

You do mean the drawing room or sitting room, right?

7. Couch

Nope, it’s a sofa for royals.

8. Perfume

Gauche. Instead, ask a duchess about her scent. Is this a thing with the French, again?

9. Posh

The royals are not Spice Girls and neither they, nor anyone they know, use that word. You are permitted, however, to say smart. As in, “My, how smart you look in all that Prada.”

10. Function

Functions are for the middle class to attend. The upper classes go to parties.

11. Refreshments

At their parties, upper class society will partake in some food and drink. Thank you, that would be lovely.

12. Dessert

Anything that is sweet is never called a dessert, or a sweet for that matter. That’s too boorish. But they will have a pudding, which is a word that covers all sweet desserts.

13. Mom and Dad

It’s mummy and daddy, even as adults. Cute!

Speaking like a royal would take some practice. Next lesson: holding your pinky up. Cheers!

The Popular Sugar Substitute Xylitol Is Deadly Poison for Your Pets

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol and is found in many food items, including sugar-free candies, puddings and even in some peanut butters. It is also used in mouthwash and toothpaste. Recently, the FDA reported that Xylitol is dangerous for dogs to ingest.

Although xylitol is totally safe for humans, it causes a massive insulin dump from the pancreas into the bloodstream for dogs. This can cause them to have dangerously low blood sugar levels and other symptoms such as weakness, trembling and seizures.

This could happen if, for instance, your pup eats a packet of sugar-free gum.

If you think your dog has eaten a product containing xylitol, call your veterinarian or animal poison control center immediately.

Gum is the most common source of xylitol poisoning in dogs, followed by “skinny” ice-cream. Poisonings can also occur when dog owners give their pets treats or medicine with a bit of peanut butter, so make sure to check the label on the jar before doing this.

To be clear: Xylitol does not have the same effect for people. People with diabetes often have it in bulk amounts at home to bake and sweeten with. Many homes contain store-bought products sweetened with xylitol, so, again, if you have a dog, be sure to check labels – especially if the product is branded as sugar-free or low-sugar.

You don’t really have to worry about your cat because they aren’t big on sweet stuff. But your big, floppy doggo is always surfing for your gum, flavored toothpaste or box of “skinny” cookies. Put the yummies safely away – maybe with the chocolate – and, one more time, check labels before doling out the treats or meds.
