A 4th-Grade Teacher Refused to Lie to His Students, so He Taught the True History of Christopher Columbus

This is an important story, so pay attention.

Nathanael Madden is a teacher at Cold Spring Elementary in Potomac, Maryland, and he has decided to take a different path when teaching his students about a very controversial historical figure.

Madden decided that he would teach the real history of Columbus and Columbus Day to his 4th-grade students, and his tweets about his student’s responses went viral.

Madden said about his decision,

“School is often a very confining and controlling place for kids, and I want to create a space for students to feel liberated by learning. I want all students to feel that they are free to be who they are and that they have a place of belonging in my classroom. This also means that we can’t ignore our world’s current realities, as well as how everything has been impacted by historical realities. Through my teaching, I constantly encourage and challenge my students to be critical questioners and critical thinkers so they can be active and informed participants in our world.”

Madden shared a series of tweets in which he talked about how his students responded to his lessons laying out the “alternative history” that is not usually taught in public schools.

Madden added,

“For so long, particularly in the US, the story of Columbus as a heroic explorer has been the dominant narrative, erasing and ignoring the voices of Indigenous peoples who have known the truth for centuries. As we grapple with the myths of American exceptionalism and start listening to the voices of different marginalized groups, we can uncover the truths of history.”

American public education has come a long way since I was in grade school; I don’t remember anything other than praise for Christopher Columbus around the time we celebrated Columbus Day at school.

The times, they are a-changing…and that’s a good thing.

Decades of studies have shown…

Decades of studies have shown that parenting has the largest effect on a child’s grades, not the quality of the school. Affluent families produce better grades regardless of the school due to having more interactions with their parents, resulting in a 30 million average word gap by age 3.

A 13-Year-Old Girl Was Charged with a Felony for Doing “Finger Guns” at School

A middle school student in Kansas was arrested and charged with a felony after pointing her fingers, in the shape of a gun, at five classmates before turning her finger gun on herself.

felony.

The incident happened at Westridge Middle School in Overland Park, a suburb of Kansas City.

The 13-year-old student reportedly mimed the actions in response to being asked by another student to point out “five people you would kill,” according to Overland Park Chief of Police Frank Donchez.

Students reported the incident through the districts anonymous website form, meant to allow students to turn in bullies without fear of reprisal, and school principal Jeremy McDonnell stepped in to interview those involved.

He then contacted the school’s resource officer, according to Donchez.

“The officer then determined that several of the students are genuinely fearful of this girl, and combined with prior knowledge that he has, felt that an arrest was warranted.”

The student clearly has prior incidents in her past that concerned school officials, but Donchez says he won’t share them since the girl is a minor, and the district declined to comment.

The girl is facing a criminal charge and, if found guilty, time in a juvenile detention center.

She’s now living with her grandfather, Jon Cavanaugh, in California, and he had this to say about the situation.

“I think that this is something that probably could have been handled in the principal’s office and got completely out of hand. She was just mouthing off.”

As for Donchez, he resents reports and headlines claiming the arrest was made due to simple hand gestures.

“Victims in this case were genuinely concerned and fearful of this individual. When you combine that with the history that we’re aware of, and the students are aware of, when you combine all that and that these individuals were genuinely in fear, that’s why the arrest was made.”

This isn’t even close to the first incident of its kind – a first grader was suspended for finger guns in 2015, and the year before that a 10-year-old in Ohio was suspended for similar actions. In 2018, an adult in Pennsylvania was found guilty of disorderly conduct for pointing a finger gun at his neighbor.

But this gurl has been charged with a felony – something that is a first. Donchez defended his decision, saying, “I’ll take heat all day long for arresting a 13-year-old. I’m not willing to take the heat for not preventing a school tragedy.”

If only we could get people to take real guns as seriously as those pantomimed with fingers, we might be getting somewhere.
