A Scared Dog Got Rescued Right Before Being Put Down, and Her Response Was so Sweet

More of these kinds of stories, please!

Bronwnye Mirkovich was looking for a new best fur-friend when he marched into a nearby shelter. He wasn’t anticipating finding “the one” that day, but there she was, waiting for him.

The reason Mirkovich chose a shelter was to try to prevent an unadopted dog from being put down before the right owner came along. According to the Humane Society, six to eight million animals end up in shelters each year, and only half will be adopted.

Mirkovich was ready to give it a shot. He walked around the shelter checking out the animals ready to go to forever homes, when he saw a a matted, dirty, skinny Maltese mix called Edie. She was hours away from getting put down. Although she was shivering and looked as if she’d had a hard life, something about her called to him. He knew he had to bring her home.

At first, she was terrified and even defecated in the corner. She cried and growled. But Mirkovich was patient. He pulled her into his lap and petted her until she calmed. He’d already made up his mind.

When Edie figured out what Mirkovich was thinking, she jumped up and pranced. Staffers cleaned her up and got her ready to go to her new home. She had a bath, a hair cut and some shots to get her up to date.

The adoption was caught on video. By the end of it, Edie was a new, and happy, dog.

Shelter dogs make great pets. There are steps you can take to make sure you find the perfect addition for your family:

  • If you already have a dog, bring him or her to see if they are willing to be friends.
  • Follow your gut feelings about an animal rather than look for specific breeds.
  • Ask questions about health and background of any animals you think you could adopt.
  • Bring any paperwork you might need, especially your rental agreement.

Most importantly, don’t overlook your local shelters. There are so many dogs, cats and other animals needing homes. They will be forever grateful for your love and attention.

10 Pics of Dogs and Cats That Had to Wear the Cone of Shame

Now I’m upset…

This is always a sad sight. I remember when our dog Quincy had to have leg surgery, he had a cone around his head for a week or so. It was quite pathetic.

Buuuuuut, you gotta do what you gotta do so your pooch or kitty cat won’t eat the stitches in their body, and they can recover quickly.

Still, it is sad…I think we can agree on that.

1. Got a little helper.

2. He’s not feeling it.

A Beagle-Shaped Airbnb Gives ‘Dog-Friendly Travel’ a Whole New Meaning

Do you have a pooch Need a hotel? Man, have we got the perfect Airbnb for you!

There is a beagle-shaped house in Cottonwood, Idaho, available on Airbnb for $132 per night. The house was built by Dennis Sullivan and Frances Conklin, artists who live in another (regular-shaped) house on the property. They started by building a 12-foot beagle named Toby in the late 1990s. It became so popular that they built a 30-foot tall beagle named Sweet Willy to use as a guest house, and that drew enough attention that they decided to rent it out to the public.

“Toby got some attention, but Sweet Willy put us into the stratosphere,” Frances told Roadside America.

The house has two bedrooms: one in the beagle’s belly and a loft in the head. The bathroom is located on the dog’s behind, of course. Nearby, there’s a giant fire hydrant to go with the giant beagle, and the property also features a visitor’s center and gift shop. Dennis and Frances live up the hill, and, since the house doesn’t have a kitchen, the couple prepare light breakfast foods for guests. There are also dog-themed books, games and puzzles for the truly dog-obsessed.

The Airbnb is, of course, dog-friendly, as long as canine guests are “responsible” and get along with the couple’s own dog — who is, shockingly, not a beagle, but a canine retriever.

Ready to book?! Sadly, so is everyone else. The Airbnb is completely filled until April 2020. But with endless 5-star reviews, it appears to be worth the wait.

A Navy SEAL Trains Dogs to Run and Attack School Shooters

No doubt about it: anxiety is running high in schools across the U.S. And that goes for students, teachers, and parents.

Many conversations center around prevention, gun laws and protection. What will it take to make sure another shooting, like the ones at Highlands Ranch STEM or Stoneman Douglas High School, never happens again?

While legislators and the voting public debate the issue, a Navy SEAL offers a solution that may mitigate loss of life and number of injured: specially trained dogs.

When Joshua Morten returned home from five tours overseas, his thoughts turned from the violence he witnessed on the battleground to what he heard was happening in schools. So he decided to do something about it; he’s using his skills at K-9 handling to train dogs to run after attackers and take them down.

Morton told NBC News, “I did not expect to see what I saw overseas, to see it in schools. But, unfortunately, it’s happening. I’ve been trying to find this solution for a very long time.”

After training dogs to search for drugs and explosives using what he calls the Morton Method, he set about teaching them to find shooters.

The process starts with finding trainable dogs that can run toward the danger while avoiding running children. He uses a partner who fires blank rounds from a semi-automatic rifle. Then, Morton guides the dog towards the noise.

This training is critical because he doesn’t want the dogs loose in a dangerous situation trying to locate the intruder at random. Instead, the dogs use all their senses to find the target.

Morton uses his friends to act as fleeing students and tries to create the scenario in a realistic manner as possible. The dog’s only objective is to aggressively attack and take down the shooter.

After the exercises are over and the protective padding comes off the “shooter,” it’s all smiles and wagging. Nothing personal.

“They’re trained to deal with that specific situation,” Morton says.

Those who have seen one of Morton’s dogs in action are impressed with the dog’s ability and focus. The dogs are clearly capable of bringing down the shooter in a matter of seconds.

Others strongly disapprove of Morton’s solution and took to Twitter with their concerns.

Others wondered if the solution was practical given that finding and training enough dogs would be difficult and expensive.

Then, there is the question of ethics. Is it right to send a dog into a shooting scenario where it runs the real and likely risk of getting injured or killed?

But the public’s skepticism does not seem to bother Morton. He, along with some of the school administrators he’s worked with, are convinced these dogs can help. He’s even breeding them so he can work with them as soon as they are old enough. Without fear and with specialized, formal training, Morton’s dogs will be at the ready the next time a former student or enraged stranger decides to take out their frustrations on our children.

Terrifyingly, they’ll be put to work soon.

Are Dogs Colorblind? Here’s the Science Behind What Dogs Can See

A lot of us have been taught that dogs, our four-legged friends, can only see the world in black and white. That they will never be able to see the beautiful colors that exist around us. It’s honestly sad to consider.

But is this true? Or is it just a thing people told their children?

Not exactly true, as it turns out.

The myth originated in 1937, per the American Kennel Club:

“It’s likely that all the external world appears to them as varying highlights of black and gray,” Rudy wrote in his 1937 manual, Training the Dog.

The phrase that catches my eye is: “It’s likely…” Okay, so there is some doubt expressed, but let’s dig deeper. The AKC also talks about a 1960 finding that may have supported Rudy’s claim:

“In the 1960s, other researchers hypothesized that the only mammals that can discern color are primates. There was little research to back up this assertion, especially in dogs; nevertheless, it soon became common knowledge that our canine pals are color blind.”

Again there is some doubt: “There was little research to back up this assertion…”

Can Dogs See Color?

The short answer is yes. Sort of.

Dr. Zay Satchu, a Chief Veterinary Officer of Bond Vet, talked with Reader’s digest:

“Yes! Dogs can see color. Both humans and animals have different types of cells in the back of our eyeballs—called rods and cones—that help us see. Rods detect motion and help with nighttime vision, and cones help with color and detail in what we see. Humans have three kinds of cones, meaning we see color and detail very well, while dogs have two kinds, meaning they can still pick up on colors, but probably can’t differentiate between forest and lime green as easily.”

But don’t go getting rid of Fido’s yellow tennis balls just yet! Dogs may not have the spectrum of color like us humans, but they can discern between certain ones.

What Colors Are Visible to Dogs?

“Most dogs can’t see much of red or green at all,” says Dr. Satchu. “The other ‘color’ that exists that humans can’t see but dogs can is ultraviolet, meaning ‘beyond violet.’ We’re still evaluating the true purpose of this vision, but we think it has to do with the ability to pick up on the kinds of substances that contain ultraviolet light, like urine and blood, that help with tracking out in the wild.”

He also says that blues and yellows are the showrunners in the rainbow that our canine friends see. Hence, the delight with the yellow tennis balls. Also, how interesting is it that a doggos’ vision goes beyond humans’!

So are you wondering why dog toys are brightly shaded in oranges, purples, and other colors? Well, here’s my take: The toys are eye-catching for humans, not pups. When we stroll down the pet aisle the manufacturers know who they’re selling too.

But as long at those toys make your dog happy, all’s well in dogland.
