Hilarious New Photo Trend for Grad Students Celebrating Their Thesis

Every summer, we’re treated to a never-ending barrage of people celeberating all sorts of things from graduations and proms to weddings and baby announcements. But here’s a new style of photoshoot you probably haven’t seen before that promises to be a big hit. I mean, this gal is really starting a trend, I CAN JUST FEEL IT!

Sarah Whelan Curtis just finished her PhD at Emory University in Atlanta, and she decided to have a little photo shoot with her baby.

No, not her actual human child – her thesis. And she added the comment, “Longest labor ever.”

Amen to that.

Curtis wrote her thesis on genetics so you know this was no easy task. We’re talking years in the making here, folks. Four years, to be exact.

Other students shared their own photos and “labor stories” after seeing Curtis’ tweet.

Curtis clearly hit a nerve because a lot of people feel the same way.

Curtis said her mother gave her an ultimatum: “Either give me a Ph.D. or give me a grandchild. I got my doctorate.” Yes, you did. Congratulations, Doctor!

Billionaire Pledges to Pay off Student Debt for Morehouse College’s ENTIRE 2019 Graduating Class

Graduating from college is an incredible milestone in anyone’s life, but it’s sadly often marred by a lot of anxiety about what comes next. The looming shadow of trying to repay a seemingly endless amount of student loans for years to come is especially daunting.

Thankfully, the 2019 graduating class of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, won’t have to worry about that – during his commencement speech at Morehouse, billionaire Robert F. Smith announced that he would be paying off ALL the student debt for Morehouse’s class of 2019!

Smith said during his speech, “On behalf of the eight generations of my family that have been in this country, we’re gonna put a little fuel in your bus. This is my class, 2019. And my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans.”

This guy’s reaction pretty much sums up the way everyone at the graduation felt about the news.

Take a look at the reaction from the graduating students.

A spokesperson for Smith said the billionaire is “thrilled to invest in these young people and their future.” Robert F. Smith made his fortune by founding a private equity firm called Vista Equity Partners that primarily buys and sells software firms. He graduated from Cornell and has a Master’s degree from Columbia.

Smith told the students, “You are responsible for building strong, safe places where our young brothers and sisters can grow with confidence. Watch and learn from positive role models, and believe that they too are entitled to the American dream.”

There’s no official confirmation of the size of Smith’s gift yet, but it’s believed to be in the neighborhood of $40 million.

What an incredibly generous gesture. Good luck, Class of 2019!

Jenna Fischer’s Visit to College Doesn’t Go as Planned. Now She Wants to See a Change

When actress Jenna Fischer paid a visit to DePauw University in Indiana for a Q&A and a book signing on April 17, 2019, the former star of The Office got more than she bargained for.

In fact, Fischer was so moved by what she saw that she took to Twitter after her visit to explain her feelings and her outrage.

Fischer learned that there had been four separate hate-filled incidents in Greencastle, Indiana, in one week before her visit, including the N-word spelled out with rocks in a local park, and anti-gay and anti-Semitic messages found scrawled in a bathroom.

While Fischer was at DePauw to promote her book, The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide, a group of demonstrators from the university’s Association of African-American Students interrupted the event, displaying a banner that read “We are not safe.”

Fischer was shocked by what she witnessed, and she shared her thoughts about the visit to DePauw on Twitter. Please read the whole post.

Fischer announced that she will be donating the money she was paid for her visit to DePauw to three organizations that for equal rights for minorities and LGBTQ people: the NAACP, the Anti-Defamation League, and The Trevor Project.

In her tweet, Fischer said, “My hope is for all people to be respected, accepted, and loved for their individuality and uniqueness. And, above all, to be safe.”

Amen to that.

Hilarious Teacher Makes Fun of His Failing Students Using Memes

Being a professor is NOT an easy job!

They’ve got the very serious duty of shaping the minds of tomorrow’s leaders… at a time when those leaders would rather be getting drunk and laid. It’s definitely not for the weak-hearted. You’ve got to handle things like making sure students pay attention, making sure they arrive on time, and giving exams in hopes they will all pass.

David Red, a professor at St. John’s River State College in Florida, takes his teaching to a new level by poking fun at failing students. But it’s not what you think! He’s relating to the 21st-century student by meeting them on their level.

He told Bored Panda, ““Students generally seem to really like the memes or really anything I do that makes it feel to them like I’m actually trying to talk to them and not just reading from a script or text. For example, in one of my classes this year I wore pink every Wednesday and the first test was entirely themed on Mean Girls. Some of them started wearing pink on Wednesdays too and they really enjoyed it. It became almost like a “team color”.

Here are the best, most wild memes he’s created.

“Anything that makes the students feel like I put my real-self into the class helps, whether it’s memes or one of these other gimmicks. If my real-self is in the room, then their real-self shows up too. And when they’re fully present like that, they learn.”

Makes me wish I had a teacher in college like him!

This Hidden Shrine of Danny DeVito Inside a College Bathroom is Raising So Many Questions

Danny DeVito is a pretty famous guy. He’s played some memorable roles in films like Matilda and Get Shorty, as well as his extended run on TV’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. But he’s not exactly the kind of actor you’d think would have a shrine dedicated to him, right?

Wrong. Apparently, students at New York’s SUNY Purchase College have done just that… or they created a cult following for their leader, Danny DeVito. Who knows.

Here’s what we know: recently, someone discovered a secret shrine in one of the college’s bathrooms, hidden behind a paper towel dispenser.

Not only is it wonderfully creepy and/or charming (depending on who you ask), it’s filled with treasures left behind for the It’s Always Sunny in Philiadelphia star. Plastic spoons, cigarettes, liquor bottles, and a graffiti picture of Squidward, to name a few, were laid at the feet of a cardboard cut out of DeVito.

Once the Administration caught wind, they tweeted:

But soon after it went viral and students began clawing to give thanks and service to the shrine, the school sealed it up.

Many students, as well as other twitter enthusiasts, took to reviving it in various ways to show the love and support every fallen shrine deserves.

Danny had a good laugh as well and sent an important message about garbage:

But questions still remain…Who did this? Why the obsession with DeVito? And how in the world did they find a removable paper towel dispenser? Alas, we may never know the truth, and I hope it doesn’t keep you up at night wondering as well…

Anyone Can Take Yale’s Incredibly Popular “Happiness Course” Online

One of the great things about the digital age we live in is how accessible things are: things that were once completely out of reach are now right at our fingertips. Like taking a popular course at Yale University online.

Yale’s “Psychology and the Good Life” course is now available as a free online course to anyone with an Internet connection. The class debuted just this spring and, remarkably, it’s already the most popular course in the 317-year history of the university.

Roughly 1,200 students are currently enrolled in the class, that’s about a quarter of Yale’s total student body. Psychology professor Laurie Santos will teach the online version, called “Science of Well-Being”, from her home. The course description reads, “The purpose of the course is to not only learn what psychological research says about what makes us happy but also to put those strategies into practice.”

The six-week class consists of readings, video lessons, and the ability to connect with fellow classmates. Take a look at the description for the class and enroll at Coursera.
