I love New York City. But it can be pricey, depending on what kind of traveler you are. Some folks want to dish out fistfuls of cash, go to Broadway shows, and eat at the nicest restaurants.

Other people, like me, prefer to experience NYC in the cheapest way possible. Sure, I’ll go out for a decent meal, but I also just like to wander around, people watch, and take in the sights and sounds in different neighborhoods.

Here are 14 things you can do for absolutely free in New York City if you happen to find yourself in that great city.

1. Explore the New York Public Library.

2. Check out the galleries in Chelsea.

3. Of course, spend some time in Central Park.

4. Take a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

5. Tour the Brooklyn Brewery for free.

6. Check out the different farmer’s markets in the city.

8. Watch the street performers (and tip them!).

9. Check out museums when they have free hours.

10. Go to the beach.

11. Visit Brooklyn Bridge Park.

You Can Get Paid $770 a Month to Move to a Beautiful Region in Italy

Packing up your entire life and moving to a small village in southern Italy might sound kind of intimidating. But what if you were getting paid $770 a month to do so?

Molise, Italy, just started a campaign to pay newcomers $770 per month for three years, under one condition: You must establish a business in one of its underpopulated villages. The initiative is designed to boost Italy’s decreasing population numbers.

“If we had offered funding, it would have been yet another charity gesture,” Donato Toma, the president of Molise, told The Guardian. “We wanted to do more; we wanted people to invest here. They can open any sort of activity: a bread shop, a stationery shop, a restaurant, anything. It’s a way to breathe life into our towns while also increasing the population.”

Towns must have fewer than 2000 residents to be eligible. Those towns will also receive about $11,000 to build infrastructure and promote cultural activities so that newcomers have a reason to stick around.

“It’s not just a matter of increasing the population. People also need infrastructure and a reason to stay, otherwise we’ll end up back where we started in a few years,” Donato explained.

There are already some great reasons to move to Molise. The mountainous area has gorgeous, idyllic olive groves and cliffside views.

The area has suffered from a massive population decline, however, as young people leave the region to pursue job opportunities elsewhere. Italy’s population as a whole is also on the decline — the number of Italian citizens fell by 677,000 between 2014 and 2018.

And that is non buono.

10 Countries Where You Can Live for Under $1000 a Month

If you’ve ever fantasized about getting away and starting over, it turns out that it is very possible to move to another country and live more cheaply, while probably also experiencing less stress and boredom. Thrillist listed 10 countries where you can live for under $1000 per month, including housing and food, plus entertainment. I can already feel my stress melting away.

Several of the countries on the list are in Asia, but there are countries all over the world: Africa, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.

Right, so let’s start with Asia. Laos, Vietnam, Nepal, and India are all countries where you can live a comfortable lifestyle for under $1000 a month. All of these countries offer amazing food options and endless options for ~adventure~.

On the border of Europe and Asia, we have both Georgia and Armenia. Armenia is apparently known for its smart people and sunshine, while next-door neighbor Georgia is clean and safe, with a rambunctious nightlife.

In Africa, we have Zimbabwe, an unbelievably gorgeous place that uses US dollars and is “Africa’s adrenaline capital.”

In the Caribbean, there’s Grenada, a small island that is often confused with Guyana but is NOT the same. If you want to achieve a whole new level of relaxation, this is the place.

Also on the list is Bolivia in South America. The visa is $160, but everything else is mega cheap. Tiny bonus: You can walk an alpaca on a leash for free???

Lastly, there’s Montenegro in Eastern Europe. It’s a tiny country with beautiful beaches and mountains. Need I say more?

Time to go do A LOT more daydreaming.
