Why Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Iconic Collars Were So Special

You may have thought that Justice Ginsburg was just a stylish lady, and enjoyed standing out from her mostly-male coworkers on the bench with her bright white, decorative collars.

Or maybe you assumed she had her reasons, figured they had nothing to do with vanity, but have never remembered to sit and Google the meaning behind them when you got home.

Now that she’s passed, let’s spend a little time just ruminating on her unique brilliance though, shall we?

In her early days, Ginsburg wore traditional lace jabots, but as her career progressed, so did her choices in neckwear. Town and Country magazine says RBG “jazzed up her black robes with some truly dazzling neckwear” for years, and it may not just have been about fashion – it was likely more of a political statement, from time to time.

Harper’s Bazaar reported that Ginsburg “has worn the same sparkling Banana Republic bib necklace as a sartorial way to express her disapproval” since 2012. If you watch closely, you can see her pull it out whenever she disagreed with a Supreme Court decision – perhaps most famously, she wore it the day after Donald Trump was elected as President.

She once told Katie Couric that it “looked fitting for dissents.”

In 2019, Banana Republic reissued the original collar and donated half of the proceeds to the ACLU Women’s Rights Project in honor of Ginsburg’s life work.

“The Notorious Necklace is a re-issue of Banana Republic’s original design from 2012,” said Banana Republic in an email. “As a brand co-founded by a woman, empowerment has always been a part of our DNA and it was a great opportunity to benefit the advancement of women’s right as a continuation of our brand commitment to champion equality.”

Ginsburg also had other “dissent collars” in her collection, though, as well as a “majority opinion collar” – a shiny yellow and rose floral design – a replica of Placido Domingo’s black and white “Stiffelio” collar, and a lacy white piece purchased in Cape Town, South Africa.

In her first official portrait with Justice Brett Kavanaugh, RBG wore a Stella & Dot necklace that Town and Country called “a cross between a feathered wing and spiky armor,” which seemed to state her disapproval of the new justice’s confirmation.

When she first joined the court, Ginsburg told The Washington Post that “the standard robe is made for a man because it has a place for the shirt to show, and the tie. So Sandra Day O’Connor and I thought it would be appropriate if we included as part of our robe something typical of a woman. So, I have many, many collars.”

Collars that clearly meant something to RBG, but also, could mean something to anyone else looking up to her for advice, guidance, or hope in the direction of the court in the future.

If I know one thing for sure, Ruth Bader Ginsburg memory – and her choice in dissenting fashion – will continue to bless this nation for a long time.

What’s the Best TV Show That Was Canceled After One Season? Here’s What People Said.

For me, it would have to be Freaks and Geeks.

If you haven’t seen it, it’s a show about teenagers in the early 1980s in suburban Detroit. It really was a great show and it launched the careers of so many people, including James Franco, Seth Rogen, Linda Cardellini, and others.

And, sadly, it was canceled after only one season…

I’m sure people in 1980 thought the world was going to Hell in a handbasket, but 40 years later, 1980 probably looks pretty decent to some people…

But what will people be nostalgic for in the year 2060?

Check Out Lizzo’s Special Recipe for the Hungover Vegans Out There

Lizzo is an icon. And while she hasn’t been active on the tour scene lately, she’s definitely been active writing and making us all jealous of her poolside ways.

But despite the fact that her insta handle is @LizzoBeEating, she doesn’t tend to dedicate a ton of her online space to food content.

When she does though, it’s pretty great.

Recently, she offered up her personal solution to a big conundrum: what do you eat if you’re committed to a vegan diet, but you had a little too much to drink last night?

“Being plant based and vegan has been pretty easy,” she says in a cooking TikTok, “except for when I’m hungover. I used to crave cheesy eggs. So, here is my substitute…”

It sounds pretty good even to us omnivores. Here’s how the recipe breaks down:

1. Carne Asada and Black Bean Corn Mixture

This is the base for the recipe, she talks more about it in a previous video you can watch here.

2. JUST Egg

Add this plant-based egg substitute to the mix.

3. Season to Taste

Lizzo added some garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.

4. Add Spinach

Gotta get those greens in there.

5. Slice of Vegan Pepperjack

For a little spice.

6. Fry Up Some Vegan Bacon

Lizzo recommends cooking it in maple syrup so it’s “crunchy and candied.”

“Ren and Stimpy was an absolute nightmare for the people who worked on it. John K ordered them not to make the same face twice. Pretty, but it was hell for the workers because they were constantly drawing things.

John K was a nightmare boss. One of the producers had a sign on his wall labeled “John’s knees” and invited people to kick it. By the time he left it was reduced to a hole.

They made several episodes that were just the animators ranting about how much of an *sshole that John K was.”

“The pilot of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy called “Trepanation of the Skull and You” tells kids that because of a mistake in evolution our skulls are too small for our brains, and that you should drill a hole in your skull as to grant the brain more space.

Which is then followed by Billy doing exactly that.

The whole thing looks like some cursed forgotten video tape.”

She and her mother were murdered by him before the movie was released in a double-murder/suicide. She was only 10.

While waiting in the line of counter they show a wet sack with baby kittens inside it coming out and running towards train. Ticket counter guy notices it and says ” what some people won’t do”.

He’s talking about old times when people use to tie up small kittens in the sack and let them drown in river.”

“In the Peppa Pig universe, characters eating each other is slightly acknowledged when a couple of the characters are stranded on an island.”

“Bikini Bottom is called so because of the Bikini Atoll.

“The reason Mickey and other characters where white gloves is because it allows their hands to be seen better.

This is a reference to actors when they did black face they wore white gloves so the audience could see their hands and fingers moving.”

The fight for good has made some significant strides in these last few weeks. Breonna Taylor’s murder case has been reopened. They arrested all four officers responsible for the death of George Floyd, and upped the charges against his murderer. LA is redistributing $150 million from the LAPD budget to invest in communities of color. Marches have happened in all 50 states and around the world, pressuring our representatives to introduce legislative change. And all that happened because of the protests, the emails, the donations. But unfortunately the fight is far from over. Just yesterday, Georgia was rampantly suppressing the black vote claiming it was for the safety of voters due to the coronavirus, even though more and more businesses are opening around the country. It’s so frustrating that it’s so hard to get people in power to do the right thing. We elect them hoping they will take the responsibility. It is, after all, their jobs to do so. But it’s an imperfect (REALLY imperfect) system, and the way we fix it is by getting loud, donating, hitting the streets, making angry calls and sending angry emails, and never relenting. I have learned so much these last weeks. My privilege has shielded me from so many horrors – many of which were not even hidden. My eyes are being opened to the police brutality and the over funding crises and I’m mad as hell. But anger is exhausting. What we truly need right now is heart, integrity, and a fuckton of courage. So I hope this helps brighten your day, but never forget that the fight isn’t close to over. Now let’s start down that yellow brick road which hopefully leads to real racial equality.
