Canadians have a much different way of consuming a classic component of American cuisine.

Take a walk down a Canadian grocery store and you may wonder what’s inside that gigantic bag that weighs nearly 10 pounds. Could it be rice? Or how about flour?

Nope, that would be milk. Inside the bag are actually three bladders of milk. Most people place the bladder inside a pitcher, snip a corner and pour for consumption.

So what’s the reason behind the prevalence of milk in bags in Quebec and other parts of Canada?

As usual, the difference can be explained by science.

During a period where glass bottles often broke and resulted in wasted product, Canadians resorted to a different solution thanks to their use of the metric system.

Because liquids had to be sold in liters, manufacturing plants would have needed to make radical adjustments to meet the new requirements.

However, bags did not require such an extensive overhaul.

Plus, they produced less packaging waste.

By the late 1970s, four-liter packages of milk became the standard in Ontario, and customers continued to pick up on the trend.

In fact, milk served in bags has started to make its way to other parts of the world. You can now find bagged milk in South Africa, Hungary, and China.

Even a school in Nebraska started serving kids milk packaged in Capri Sun-esque pouches.

No matter how you consume your milk, it’s best to keep it fresh. So whether you’re a bottle loyalist or you’ve broken the mold and gone with the bag method, at least you’re following mom’s orders to keep those bones strong and healthy.

But, really… I think back to my childhood. Growing up in shitty apartments with a trailer park nearby in South Florida. An older couple that were “Snow Birds” (people from a place with snowy winters, who come to a warm place to spend the winter and then return home in the spring). They were the most delightful people. They somehow knew my Dad. He was gone a lot for work and my Mom was brutal.

Anyway, they would arrive. They had a small trailer with an attached screened in porch. The porch had jalousie windows. The trailer was a small one bedroom affair-tiny, it was neat as a pin. When they arrived, she would open it up and begin cleaning for their three month visit.

The husband would be gone to work or the horsetrack. She would hire me to wash windows, pull weeds and clean. She paid me a few dollars here and there, literally five dollars was a king’s ransom back then. But, she would cook for me. She made lunches and baked goods. I existed on cereal and other crap at home. My Mother was a 100 pound cigarette smoker and didn’t eat, hardly at all and therefore, never cooked. S

he was older when I was born. I was an “oops” kid for sure. At home my life sucked. This lovely woman fed me and treated me with kindness and dignity that my 11 year old self had never known. I’m in my fifties now and can still see the inside of the screened in porch and the TV tray where I sat and ate for a few days and then once a week after mowing for those three months, for five years until the husband died and they never returned.

I swear, this lovely French Canadian lady is responsible for any of the good that is in my heart. I hadn’t thought of those moments in quite a while.I’m getting teary writing this. So there, that’s what Canada means to me.”

Canadians Crowdfunded $3 Million to Save Pristine Land from Development

Hey, people in the U.S.: take the time to read this article and maybe we can follow the lead of our neighbors to the north on this, okay?

It’s always incredibly depressing to see untouched, pristine wilderness get purchased and developed by huge, wealthy corporations. Which is why people in Canada decided to take a stand to save 2,000 acres of beautiful coastline in British Columbia.

A crowdfunding effort raised $3 million to purchase the area of coastal wilderness in the Princess Louisa Inlet in British Columbia. The land is virtually untouched and citizens knew they only had one shot to make this work.

The crowdfunding was organized by the B.C. Parks Foundation, a group that works to protect natural landscapes. Logging companies and developers expressed interest in buying the gorgeous land after it was put up for sale by a private owner.

This crowdfunding effort wasn’t just a couple of wealthy people chipping in, either. Average Canadians paid $10 or $15 here and there to contribute to saving the 2,000 acres – and clearly it worked!

The B.C. Parks Foundation will make the land a protected park for all to enjoy.

The organization wrote a letter expressing its gratitude to all the people who donated money.

“Dear Park Supporters,

You did it! Your love for British Columbia and beautiful places like Princess Louisa Inlet has done something miraculous. In just a few short months, you have raised $3 million to protect a jewel in B.C’.s coast.

We still have to finalize the sale with the vendor (now September 3rd), and there are more steps to come, but in donating the funds you have scaled a substantial peak on this amazing expedition.

We know people want to keep B.C. beautiful, and we know our parks are the core of our identity. They are our cathedrals, our towers, our pyramids; the wonders of our world. But we couldn’t have predicted such a fabulous outpouring in such a short time from so many different people and places. We are in a state of awe and gratitude.

We will keep you posted when the deal is finalized. Any funds that continue to come in will be put in our Parks Bank to protect more areas in Princess Louisa and British Columbia.

Traveling Through the Canadian Rockies in a Glass-Domed Train Looks Amazing

An extensive, leisurely train trip through Canada is on my bucket list, and it seems like this might be the best way to see at least part of that beautiful country.

Rocky Mountaineer’s Goldleaf Service looks like a fantastic and luxurious way to see the Canadian Rocky Mountains in style. Riders who use this service enjoy breathtaking mountain views from the comfort of a glass-domed train. Along with the amazing scenery, riders are served gourmet meals and wine and cheese (and complimentary alcoholic drinks and snacks).

There’s also a viewing platform so riders can step outside to enjoy the fresh air and the incredible views that only the Canadian Rockies can supply. The Goldleaf trains offer a number of different routes that riders can book. There are many great stops along the way, including Vancouver, Banff, Seattle, and Lake Louise.

The package tours also offer hotel accommodations at various points along the Goldleaf routes. The company offered four new rail cars in 2019 and will introduce three additional cars in 2020. President and CEO Steve Sammut said, “These new GoldLeaf rail cars will allow us to welcome even more guests on board our trains and offer increased availability across our most popular dates and routes.”

The new train cars have dimmable domed windows to cut down on the intensity of incoming sunlight and reclining, heated seats.

Two million people have traveled on Rocky Mountaineer trains to see the Canadian Rockies since the company started in 1990.

A trend has developed in recent years where we’re seeing cities, counties, and grocery stores completely banning the use of single-use plastic bags altogether. So while there is some progress, we still have a long way to go.

One grocery store in Vancouver, British Columbia, decided to try to convince their customers NOT to use plastic bags in a very unique, and hilarious, way.

East West Market is offering customers plastic bags with fake slogans and fake businesses that no one, and I mean no one, would want to be seen with. How’s that for a deterrent? Embarrassment always works, people.

How would you like to carry a bag around town that said, “Into the Weird Adult Video Emporium,” “Dr. Toews’ Wart Ointment Wholesale,” or “The Colon Care Co-op”? You’d probably never be able to look your neighbors in the eye again.

The bags have the tag line “Avoid the shame. Bring a reusable bag” printed on them as well. Customers also have to pay five cents per plastic bag at East West Market if they don’t bring their own bags.

The owner of East West Market, David Lee Kwen, said about the project, “We wanted to give them something humorous, but also something that made them think at the same time. It’s human nature not to want to be told what to do.”

One downside has been that because the bags went viral online, people are paying the five cents to collect them. Kwen said, “Some of the customers want to collect them because they love the idea of it. It’s a double-edged sword. We wanted to address an issue, but we’ve also made something popular. Our aim was to start a conversation that could go beyond people just remembering their reusable bags when they come to our market—and we’re glad that the conversation has kept growing, with anyone who’s seen or interacted with the bags.”

Hey, at least people are taking notice, right?

Just do us a favor and bring a reusable bag next time you go grocery shopping, okay?
