A Beekeeper Turned Thieving Bears into (Unpaid) Honey-Tasters

If you’re a person of a certain age, then there’s a good chance the characters from Winnie the Pooh are near and dear to your heart.

Which also means that you’ve been aware for basically your whole life that bears really, really love honey.

Like Pooh, giant bears will go to great lengths to get to honey they’ve sniffed out – and even though the ensuing videos may be adorable to the masses, for to bee farmers…not so much.

The bears can cause damage to hives that can cost thousands of dollars to repair, so most keepers work hard to keep them away. But when Ibrahim Sedef’s ideas of putting up metal cages and leaving out different bear-fare like bread and fruit didn’t work, he had a rather adorable lightbulb moment.

Maybe the bears could be brought on as quality control.

Beekeeper turns honey-stealing bears into taste testers #FACTS AUG. 29, 2019 – These #bears just wanted a little smackerel from the honey pot. And #beekeeper Ibrahim Sedef is using their honey-loving palates to his advantage Sedef, an agricultural engineer in #Turkey, is constantly trying to protect his hives from the many sweet-toothed bears in his neighborhood, on the country’s #BlackSea coast. His efforts got downright scientific when he began experimenting with various tactics to divert their paws away from his liquid gold Ever the scientist, Sedef eventually decided that if he couldn’t beat them, he could at least learn from them — particularly their expert taste for #honey So he set up a night-vision camera on his bee farm, and laid out a table with five varieties of honey for the bears to taste test Sedef told Turkish outlet DHA that the bears, in fact, had a very refined sense of smell that led them first to the rare Anzer honey from the Ballıköy plateau region, which they slurped up the most. According to Ahval News, the Turkish honey goes “1,000 liras ($171) per kilo,” and is considered “among the most expensive honeys on the market.” #Anzerhoney is the most famous of all Turkish honeys, said to be, of course, the best honey in the world Of course, New Zealanders say manuka honey is the best, Australians say it’s berringa honey, Indians say it’s Maharishi honey, Russians say it’s Bashkir honey, Arabs say it’s sidr honey, Malaysians say it’s gelam honey or tualang honey and the list can continue. Basically each country can pretend it produces the best honey in the world #FOODNINFO #FOODNETWORK #FOODANDWINE #TASTY #TOPCHEF #LEFOODING #huffpostgram #HUFFPOSTTASTE #EATER #LAEATS #EATERDENVER #NETFLIXFOOD #CHEFSROLL #chefsofinstagram #SAFOODIE #EATERLA #DISCOVERY #NATURE #ANIMALPLANET

He installed photo trap cameras that could track the bears roaming his farm, mostly at night, and then set up a table topped with labeled bowls of different kinds of honey.

It worked.

The bears didn’t disturb the hives, since the honey was ready and waiting, and now Sedef – and the rest of us – know which honey a true connoisseur would prefer.

It turns out bears have expensive taste, because they devoured the Anzer honey first – it goes for around $150 a pound in Turkey – while leaving the cherry blossom honey untouched.

Now you know that the “good” honey really does taste much better – even the bears agree that you get what you pay for (even if they’re not technically paying).

Hershey’s and Yuengling Teamed up to Create a Chocolate Beer

When two amazing things are combined, it’s cause for celebration, right?

Damn right!

What Old Style is to Chicago and Lone Star is to Texas, that’s what Yuengling is to Pennsylvania. Good, cheap beer enjoyed by regular folks who don’t want to spend a fortune on booze.

So it makes perfect sense that two of the most well-known businesses in the Keystone State, Yuengling and Hershey’s, teamed up to create the Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter.

Jennifer Yuengling, Vice President of Operations at the company, said:

“As the sixth generation of the Yuengling family, we have a 190-year history of listening to our fans and looking for new ways to deliver quality and memorable drinking experiences. We saw a unique opportunity to partner with Hershey’s, a brand known worldwide for its iconic, delicious tasting chocolate, to deliver fans our first-ever beer collaboration. We spent nearly a year developing our Yuengling Hershey’s Chocolate Porter and are excited for the world to indulge in the classic taste of Yuengling Dark Brewed Porter blended with the unmistakable taste of Hershey’s chocolate.”

You’ll be able to find the beer on draft in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, West Virginia, New York, Virginia, Maryland, Connecticut, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, and Washington, DC.

You can also use the “Find Our Beer” tool on Yuengling’s website to find out where you can track down this special beer.

The brew is a limited-release product that is supposed to run from Halloween through Valentine’s Day, so you probably don’t want to sleep on this, folks.

A Dr. Pepper Cream Soda Flavor Will Hit Shelves in 2020

Got a hankering for something new in the soda game? Well, you’re in luck, friends.

It was recently announced that a Dr. Pepper and Cream Soda flavor will be hitting shelves next year in regular and diet forms.

The new flavors made their debuts at the recent National Association of Convenience Stores trade show (yes, it’s a thing) in Atlanta. Attendees are able to get sneak peeks at new beverages and snacks at the event. One visitor took a photo of the new products and shared her review on Instagram.

The person described the new drink: “New Dr Pepper & Cream Soda in both regular and diet varieties will be out March 2020! Due to the added vanilla flavor, these aren’t as strong on the classic Dr Pepper taste. Therefore, the flavor here is much less polarizing than original Dr Pepper. I actually like this flavor, unlike the original!”

In an email, the folks at Dr. Pepper said, “News this sweet is too good to keep to ourselves. We are excited to confirm Dr Pepper & Cream Soda is REAL, and we look forward to treating our fans to this next-level flavor as it starts to hit shelves nationwide in March.”

What do you think? Are you excited about these new products from Dr. Pepper? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

On another note, I really want to be invited to this trade show next year so I can sample all the new snacks and treats…hit me up if you’re going.

A Company Publicly Shamed a Job-Seeking Woman for What She Posted on Her Personal Instagram Page

When 24-year-old Emily Clow came across a potential marketing job at Kickass Masterminds, she thought it sounded like a good fit.

The company, which worked with “rebellious business owners who yearn for freedom and are ballsy enough to chase after it,” was looking for someone to help those entrepreneurs grow their businesses through marketing and social media.

Clow applied and received a request for additional application materials, which she provided. She was excited until she discovered that the company wasn’t interested in hiring her – they were interested in using her as an example of what not to do.

Someone involved in the hiring process took a photo of Emily from her Instagram page (she was wearing a bikini) and posted it to their own Instagram story with the following caption:

“I am looking for a professional marketer – not a bikini model. Go on with your bad self and do whatever in private. Bt this is not doing you any favors finding a professional job.”

In their IG story, the person behind the company’s account used Emily’s photo to warn other applicants against sharing their social media handles with potential employers “if this is the kind of content on it.”

Clow was, unsurprisingly, not all that happy when she found out about the post.

“I was objectified earlier today by a company because of a picture of me in a bikini. They claimed it made me an “unprofessional.” They screenshot the photo, posted it on their insta story, and called me out. I am still baffled that the company handled it in such a manner.”

Her tweet has since gone viral, garnering support from thousands of people online, including some who have even offered to help Clow find a job.

Clow was hurt, but also confused because it was a picture of her in a bathing suit at a pool – where that attire is obviously standard.

Her requests to the company for the post to be taken down were originally ignored (and they eventually blocked her on Instagram when she continued to dog them about it).

Sara Christensen, Kickass Masterminds’ CEO, wrote on Medium that she made “an error in judgement” and has “learned a lesson” but is not “ready to publicly address it in detail.”

It appears she might not ever be ready, because the company’s IG account – along with their website, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn profiles – has been removed.

Funny sort of stuff from such a “ballsy” company.

Said Clow, “I thought this was a situation that I feel like a lot of women deal with on a daily basis when they’re job hunting. I figured that, ‘Hey, I might as well talk about this,’ because if I talk about it I know someone else is going through this and we can start a conversation and see if there’s a way to fix the issue.”

Social media has complicated many facets of life since it became such an integral part of both people’s personal lives and employers’ hiring. Though it has its upsides, it has become a minefield that all current job seekers have to navigate.

How to do that professionally is an ongoing discussion, and Emily Clow definitely added a chapter.

How the next one goes, we’ll just have to wait and see.

A Woman Walked Until She Bled to Prove a Point About Her Job’s Senseless Dress Code

Men don’t understand what it’s like to be a woman, which is perhaps understandable, as they are not and never have been a woman. But it’s also the reason why they should, you know, listen to actual women when it comes to their own lived experiences. Things like what’s comfortable to wear for work.

Reddit user u/Inconvenientsilence works at a U.K. casino as a bartender. She stewed quietly as management altered things so that the male bartenders stayed behind the bar and the females were made to circulate with trays.

She could not take it sitting down, though, when they changed the dress code – for the female bartenders only.

Instead of being able to wear black slacks, a black shirt, and comfortable shoes for their 12-hour shifts, women began to be expected to wear tight gray dresses and high heels.

Despite protests from the female staff, who told management that their feet wouldn’t be able to manage the long shift on their feet, management insisted.

So, this Reddit user decided to do exactly what they wanted in order to prove her point.

By the end of her shift, her feet were literally running with blood and she was shaking with pain.

Management was shocked to see what their dress code caused, but they also clearly understood the message and backed down.

I want to say good for this woman, but honestly, men should not have to see actual blood for them to listen to their female employees.

Just sayin’.

LEGO Is Running Completely on Renewable Energy…Three Years Ahead of Schedule

We hear a lot of hot air from big corporations and companies about how they plan on doing wonderful things for the environment, but a lot of it just seems to go nowhere. That’s why what LEGO has accomplished is pretty incredible.

The folks at LEGO originally set a goal of 2022 for their production facilities to run completely on renewable energy, but here we are 2019 and the company has already reached its goal, three years early.

The company was able to reach their goal because of the completion of an offshore wind farm that sits in the Irish Sea. The company actually built a giant wind turbine out of 146,00 LEGO pieces to celebrate the great achievement.

Bali Padda, CEO of LEGO Group, said, “We work to leave a positive impact on the planet and I am truly excited about the inauguration of the Burbo Bank Extension wind farm. We will also continue to work to inspire children around the world by engaging them in environmental and social issues.”

LEGO also has a fully-functional wind turbine set with plant-based bricks for kids (and adults) to play with and learn from.

The bottom line is that renewable energy is not only good for the environment but it’s also good for business. We can only hope that other huge companies will take note and follow LEGO’s lead. LEGO has 42 offices around the world and brings in over $2 billion in sales annually in the U.S. alone.

I’d say that’s a pretty good model to follow, wouldn’t you?

Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Destroyed $5 Million Worth of Assault Weapons After Storewide Ban

The debate over gun control has reached a fever pitch in recent years, but it also feels like not much has been accomplished. You can point the finger in any direction you want to, but it’s a combination of many factors: politicians, big business, the NRA, shareholders, etc.

And as mass shootings continue to plague our country, Americans from all backgrounds grow more and more frustrated at the lack of action on gun legislation.

One CEO of a major company has decided to take a major step to prove that he and his company value human life over profits. Even though it cost his business an estimated $250 million, Dick’s Sporting Goods CEO Ed Stack permanently removed all assault-style rifles from 729 stores in 47 states in the U.S. in February 2018 after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.

In addition to that bold move, Ed Stack also recently announced that his company actually destroyed $5 million worth of assault weapons last year after it stopped selling them in stores.

Stack said he had the option to send the weapons back to the manufacturer for an 80%-85% refund or Dick’s could have tried to liquidate their inventory quickly through discounts. Stack recalled, “We’re in this meeting and I said, ‘We can’t do that.’ We think these guns should be outlawed. We think that the ban that was in place between 1994 and 2004 should be reinstated.”

Stack said he knew the weapons would end up out on the street if he chose either of those options, so they decided to destroy all the guns. Many people praised Stack’s decision but of course there was blowback from firearms manufacturers and NRA supporters.

Bravo, Mr. Stack. Let’s see if other CEOs and politicians will follow his lead.
