Dozens of Employees Took Bold Action Against a Greedy Business Owner

Trying to get powerful people to listen and treat you fairly can often feel like an impossible task. That’s why reminders about the power of collective bargaining are so important.

One story by Reddit user Vivian_kiki exemplifies this on a small scale, with 50 employees working in solidarity to curb the greedy and stupid practices of one particular business owner. The story was originally posted to the subreddit r/ProRevenge but has since been removed by moderators, apparently for not being revenge-y enough.

But I say hard-nosed negotiation can be pretty badass too. I’m glad to see that Fail Blog saved the screenshots so that it lives on.

It’s a bit of a read but well worth your time. I’ll let it speak for itself.

Dieker’s Capital One 360 savings account earns an interest rate of 0.63 percent. By dividing 72 by that paltry figure, it would take Dieker 114 years to double her money.

At least her Vanguard investment accounts are in better shape, as they earn an average rate of return of 10.3 percent. In that case, it would only take Dieker seven years to double her money.

Financial tips like the Rule of 72 can be critically helpful for novice investors like myself. Delving into the world of stocks, mutual funds, cryptocurrency and everything in between can be daunting for those without a strong financial background.

When it comes to the Rule of 72, percentage points matter. So take the time and do your homework on potential investments before you fully commit.

5 Things Your Gym Doesn’t Tell You About Those Sign-Up Discounts

Gyms across the United States see a major uptick in membership sales right after everyone makes their New Year’s resolution to lose weight. Yet, the promise to get in shape can come at a cost to customers.

And if you’re not careful about reading the fine print (which can often include hefty cancellation fees), you could lose more money than pounds on the scale.

Here are five things your gym isn’t telling you when they put on new year deals.

1. Look Past the Giveaways

Don’t fall victim to the “Free Friday Pizza” giveaway or the complimentary snack counter. After all, isn’t the key to this whole weight loss thing about willpower?

While it may seem like a tantalizing reason to sign up, tread cautiously when it comes to the excessive giveaways.

DealNews consumer analyst Michael Bonebright says,

“Chances are, these ‘perks’ are built into the cost of your membership, so you can probably find a lower rate without them.

You can always bring your own healthy snacks.”

Maybe a free slice of pepperoni pizza isn’t a great idea before a sauna session.

2. Take Your Time To Sign Up

While most people are quick to sign up for a gym membership once January hits, it’s actually best to be patient. Many commercial gyms offer discounted rates, zero sign-up fees and other perks in an effort to ramp up their sales in the new year.

However, DealNews recommends waiting till the end of the month (including January) to maximize your savings. If you’re lucky, sales representatives will be desperate to reach their monthly quota, which can be a great opportunity for a potential customer to score a sweet deal.

3. Read the Fine Print

As with any contract, take the time to read every line. And I mean every line.

Gyms are notorious for hiding cancellation fees and making it downright difficult to get out of your contract. Don’t fall for a good sales pitch and realize later that those promises weren’t put in writing.

Study the contract carefully before signing, or maybe even look for a gym that offers month-to-month memberships.

4. Shop Around

Never fall for the first gym you see. There could be better options out there.

The fitness industry is extremely competitive, and you can find great deals on Groupon or other social sites that could save you serious cash every month.

Shop around and read reviews of the gyms in your area before committing.

5. Don’t Become a Statistic

Ready to attack the new year and get in shape? So is everyone else.

Unfortunately, many people enter the new year with great intentions but fall short in results. In fact, according to research conducted by the International Health Racquet & Sportsclub Association, although more than 12 percent of all new gym members join in January, a significant portion of those new year members give up within five months.

Make sure you are fully invested in changing your lifestyle and your health before you put pen to paper on your new gym contract.

By the End of 2020, China Plans to Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags in Every Major City

It’s a new decade – and China, for one, doesn’t plan to end it as a top contributor to the world’s pollution problem. At least, not when it comes to single-use plastic bags.

They plan to include plastic plates, cutlery, and straws in the ban as well.

The Chinese National Development and Reform Commission detailed the plan, which includes the complete ban of non-degradable plastic bags in every major city in the country, with plans to expand to every city and town by 2022.

They’re providing exceptions to markets selling fresh products until 2025.

The government expects the hospitality industry to get on board by the same year, with restaurants stopping the use of plastic straws and cutlery, as well as reducing their other single-use plastic items by 30%. Hotels will operate under the same expectations.

Currently, China produces around 60 million tons of plastic waste every year, far and away the largest plastic polluter in the world. The U.S. is next on the list, throwing out 38 million tons of plastic per year – which, in case you’re not into math, means each person in the States creates almost 3x as much plastic pollution as each person in China.

China is also one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of plastics, and plans to expand its environmentally conscious approach to that area, as well: they’ve decided to no longer produce products that are less than 0.025mm thick. In a less environmental move, China no longer imports plastic recyclables from other countries, which has made it very difficult for recycling to maintain its cost efficiency in the United States.

Let’s be honest – the average person doesn’t need to use plastic bags at the grocery store or get a straw and plastic silverware every time they order takeout. There are simple workarounds that people choose not to use because they’re lazy and plastic is convenient.

If this proves anything, it’s that the government is going to have to step in – because regular people aren’t going to voluntarily make their own lives slightly harder, even for the good of the planet.

At least, not in high enough numbers to really make a difference.

Patagonia’s CEO Donated Company’s $10 Million Tax Cut to Fight Climate Change

As much as some people (and organizations) out there would like to bury their heads in the sand and pretend climate change doesn’t exist, it is very real, and its effects are growing more drastic.

Because of the 2018 rewrite of America’s tax laws – a tax code revision that greatly benefited corporations by lowering the corporate tax rate by almost a third for most companies – Patagonia paid $10 million less in taxes that year than it had anticipated. So the company’s CEO, Rose Marcario, decided to donate the $10 million to non-profit groups that are working to fight climate change and help the environment.

Marcario believed the corporate tax cut was not a good thing, and she wrote, “Based on last year’s irresponsible tax cut, Patagonia will owe less in taxes this year—$10 million less, in fact. Instead of putting the money back into our business, we’re responding by putting $10 million back into the planet. Our home planet needs it more than we do.”

Speaking about climate change deniers, including many in government, Marcario wrote, “Far too many have suffered the consequences of global warming in recent months, and the political response has so far been woefully inadequate—and the denial is just evil.”

Patagonia has been a friend of the environment for many years now and their website says the company has donated more than $89 million to environmental groups to fight climate change.

Let’s hope that more corporations and individuals make their voices heard about the extreme consequences of climate change that are occurring around us every day. This isn’t something that might happen in the future, this is taking place right now.

The Barbie Fashionistas line of dolls now has 176 dolls with 35 skin tones, 94 different hairstyles, and 8 body types. I’d say they’ve come a long, wouldn’t you? Mattel said the Fashionistas line is “designed to reflect the world girls see today.”

A spokesperson for Mattel said, “For 2020, Barbie is continuing the journey to represent global diversity and inclusivity in the fashion doll aisle by showcasing a multi-dimensional view of beauty and fashion.”

Heck, even Ken has long hair now!

In order to design the doll with the skin condition vitiligo, Mattel worked with a dermatologist to make sure the condition was depicted in an accurate manner. A Mattel spokesperson said, “As we continue to redefine what it means to be a ‘Barbie’ or look like Barbie, offering a doll with vitiligo in our main doll line allows kids to play out even more stories they see in the world around them.”

These dolls are great – keep them coming, Mattel!

And keep expanding your Fashionista line to include more and more people of all kinds because kids who can now see dolls that look like them really appreciate it.
