Research Says You’re Worse at Picking Good Photos of Yourself Than a Stranger Is

Taking a good selfie may seem simple, until you actually try to do it. Often, you’ll wind up taking approximately 5,000 photos before you see one that’s cute enough to post.

But who deems a photo “cute enough”? Beauty is subjective, and according to one study, you’re not the best person to judge which photos of yourself are the best.

In 2017, researchers in Australia had 102 students rank photos of themselves by their attractiveness, trustworthiness, dominance, confidence, and competence. The participants rated each photo from one to 10 in each category. Then 160 strangers did the same thing for each picture.

Surprisingly, the students’ favorite photos did not rank as well with strangers as the others. This was the opposite of what the researchers had predicted.

“This result is contrary to the prediction based on self-presentation literature, that participants would select more flattering images of themselves,” they wrote.

So, it might be a good idea to seek out a second opinion before you pick which selfie to post — at least when looking attractive to other people is the goal, such as on dating apps.

But why, exactly, are people so bad at picking good photos of themselves? You’d think we’d be better at it because we know our own faces better than anyone else.

Well, that also means we’re more biased than other people.

We may see ourselves as hotter and more trustworthy, for example. Moreover, you see yourself in a specific way before you even glance at a photo, and you’re typically looking for a photo that matches up with what’s in your head. Strangers have no such biases.

So in this case, maybe don’t go with your gut.

A Woman Lost Clumps of Hair After She Bought Conditioner Spiked with Nair

You know that girl who licked a carton of Blue Bell ice cream and put it back, sparking a nationwide panic about tampered-with products? Yeah, apparently people are out there tampering with hair conditioner, too, as one poor woman in Wisconsin learned the hard way.

Taffy Jo Trimm and her daughter Ashley Rose bought a bottle of Pantene conditioner from a Walmart in New Richmond, Wisconsin. Conditioner bottles often don’t have any sort of protective seal on them, and, in this case, the conditioner must have been tampered with by some heinously evil individual. After Ashley used the conditioner, her hair started falling out in massive clumps. Also, the conditioner was an “ugly pink color” instead of the usual white, Taffy wrote on Facebook.

Attention new Richmond Walmart shoppers be aware of shampoo and conditioner you buy there as my daughter Ashley Rose…

Posted by Taffy Jo Timm on Sunday, July 28, 2019

“Attention New Richmond Wisconsin Walmart shoppers,” Taffy wrote. “be aware of shampoo and conditioner you buy there as my daughter Ashley Rose bought some two days ago and someone mixed Nair in her conditioner bottle!!!! As I speak she is losing hair and crying!!”

After the ordeal, Ashley had bald spots on her head. She wrote her own Facebook post about her painful experience, sharing photos of her hair loss.

Posted by Taffy Jo Timm on Monday, July 29, 2019

“My hair was finally the way I loved it to be and now it’s gone,” she wrote. “Pictures do not do it justice or show the 100 percent damage it has caused me. My heart hurts terribly…Check your bottles wherever you get them, nothing can be trusted anymore.”

Ashley tried to get hair extensions, but her remaining hair was brittle and falling out. She ended up shaving her head.

Ashley and Taffy reported the incident to the police, who will be reviewing the security camera footage to determine who tampered with the conditioner and whether other bottles were affected.

15+ Times Accidental Art Was Better Than Any Masterpiece

Artists can work for years to create the perfect piece, which probably means it’s super annoying when chance and nature combine to make something amazing at the drop of a hat.

But that doesn’t make it any less wonderful for the rest of us – evidenced by the 17 pieces of art below!

Twitter Post About a Nail Job Gone Wrong Goes Viral

We all know that life rarely ever turns out the way you want it to. A friend of mine once told me, “If you want to hear God laugh, tell him your plans,” and it really is true.

Anyone who’s spent time on the internet knows all about the “Expectation vs. Reality” memes, because they are so instantly relatable.

Twitter user Mai Tai recently had her own version of the Expectation vs. Reality experience when her nail job didn’t quite go right…

It wasn’t long before others started chiming in about their own less-than-stellar nail jobs.

Yikes.

The struggle, it seems, is very real.

Just when you think it can’t get worse…

… it does.

Yowza. Those are *not* great.

But don’t get too discouraged, because there were also plenty of people who got just what they wanted and then some:

Oh, my!

I’ll have what she’s having.

It just goes to show, not all nail technicians are created equal (and also probably avoid the one that Mai Tai went to).
