Film Industry Workers Discuss What Work is Like When Everyone Knows They’re Making a Terrible Movie

Have you seen The Disaster Artist?

It’s a movie that came out in 2017 and it’s about the making of a film called The Room, which was released in 2003.

If you haven’t seen The Room, I encourage you to check it out because it is unintentionally one of the funniest movies ever made. It’s totally ridiculous, over the top, and has gained a cult following simply because of how bad it is.

The Disaster Artist perfectly captures the feeling of the people who worked on the set of The Room and it is pretty hilarious because they all know it’s going to be awful.

Here are some amusing stories from folks on AskReddit who worked on sets for projects that everyone knew were going to turn out bad.

Enjoy!

1. I love Roger Corman!

“I worked on a few Roger Corman movies in the 90’s so we knew were were making cheap throwaway films. Most of the people there were working to get experience and have a few things to put on resumes.

Things that would drop off quickly when better things came along. Just about everyone worked as hard as they could and had a great time busting our ass to make “Carnosaur III”.”

2. You can have some shitty days.

“I’m a camera operator.

It entirely depends on the mind set of the director and producer. In the entertainment industry, you’re working on people’s personal art in a lot of ways which can make those who created it take criticism personally. Much yelling and insults are thrown about when those in charge are having a bad day.

That can make for a REALLY shitty day if you’re the one they’re taking it out on. Those who say no one cares and it’s all for a paycheck don’t work closely with the creators.”

3. Uh oh…

“I recently worked as 1st Assistant Director for a short film and it was literally the director thinking that this script was all great but it had shitty dialogue and a terrible story that was unoriginal.

The producer had the same train of thought and cared for little pre production which made my job harder. Basically I had to convince the director and producer to get this one shot outside before sunset which they thought they could get later on.

Afterwards the DP thanked me and the director/producer turned around from their angst about moving from the location we were shooting a few scenes at to get this one shot.

This does not translate to every film job but it just shows how much pre production needs to be as big as a focus as production.”

4. Boring…

“My husband was a character actor for many years in movies. (Yes, you would have seen him) With very few exceptions, everyone is very professional on big movies, because that’s what it takes to get that far.

Someone is putting up a lot of money to pay all these people and everyone is serious about it. Sure there might be some eye rolling or lighting truck banter about some corny scene or whatever, but most people are just paying attention to their jobs, there is so much to do. Except for the actors.

The one time I went on the set, it was for a B movie he was essentially doing as a favor, had some ex-big stars in it, the call was for 7 am and he didn’t shoot until 3:30! We sat in a trailer watching tv all day. I don’t know how they do it. Gah! The boredom!”

5. Different experiences.

“I was in a movie for ScyFy.

Going in to it you know it’s not Shakespeare. Most people have the same attitude about it and that can make for a looser atmosphere. There is a ton of goofing around and generally not taking anything too seriously.

The pressure is less for a movie of that calibre. Because of that there is room to improvise. There is something fun about being in something terrible…sometimes. On the other hand, I have been in a bad TV show for ABC and it was not such a good time.

The pressure from the execs was palpable and it made everyone stress. The amount of money and resources that goes in to a show like that is mind boggling. When you have two weeks to shoot one show with huge set pieces and a large ensemble it makes the work less about getting it right and more about getting it in the can and off to the Studio.

We still had fun, but the pressure made for some interesting days.”

6. No clue.

“I was just the lead in a feature where the director really had no idea what he was doing. In almost every scene he broke some of the most basic rules of narrative filmmaking. In the very first cut of the movie he broke the 180 degree rule.

As the lead, I was in 90+ of 116 pages of the script and was filming 14-16 hours a day doing everything I could to try to make this film the best it could. Every time I caught him breaking a rule, I called him out on it.

He didn’t HIRE A CREW to help him make this movie. He hired a sound guy and figured he could do the rest. I’ve seen some of the footage and I think he was misled by his ego. The camerawork is unrewardingly ambitious and distracting.

Luckily for him he hired a great cast (not trying to say anything about myself, just the rest of the team). We, as the cast, became the crew. Every night, I helped hammer out the schedule for the next day, figure out what props we need, what scenes we didn’t get or need to reshoot, etc.

It was a headache after you’ve just filmed for 14 hours and am doing something that should have been done months ago.

All in all, we had hope that it’ll turn out alright. None of us really saw much of a future for it, but there might be some decent scenes to pull from.

It’s probably going to come out this summer and because my face is in almost every single scene, I can already tell I’m going to cringe almost the entire time watching it.”

7. Hard to tell.

“I have found its hard to tell if the film is really that bad. I mean I bet there were crew members on the original star wars going, “what the hell is this?!”.

I think its a bit of the opposite, every show/film is a gig and you’re working your position maybe trying to get moved up on the next show if the crew stays together.

But sometimes when you’re on something great you realize this. I saw this with my dad who was a production recordist. Worked show to show but then got on some no name show called “Seinfeld”. He rode that out year after year because he knew he was apart of something once in a life time.

Also the producers of Seinfeld were incredibly giving to their crews.”

8. A shoulder to cry on.

“I do Craft Service for a living and if things are going poorly I’m the first person everyone comes crying to, there’s comfort in snacks.

The crew, above the line people excluded, could care less whether the commercial/music video/ movie looks bad.

All they want is good pay, good food, and coffee.”

9. It depends…

“In my experience it can vary depending on who you’re around. Some people will realize what’s going on, then there are those who are going to believe in the product until the reviews come in.

For example, working on Pompeii the wardrobe department had made up pins that said stuff like “I wish a real volcano would hit this set” and you’d see a few people in the crew wearing them, but making sure not have them too visible down at the set because Paul w. S. Takes himself very seriously despite the amount of campy shit he puts out.”

10. Complete shit.

“I worked as a PA on a really low budget film in the 90s. Wasn’t in the industry, just that it was being filmed near my house and my friend was PA on the crew and offered me something to do for the summer.

The morale was complete shit. Nobody wanted to help anyone else. I had to argue with the producer to get $10 to buy nails so I could build a wall for the set. He wanted me to look around to see if there were any in the sawdust in the shop floor first.

The AD was getting the dick from the DP in a remote area of the location every day, and then she went OTR or something and started fighting with him openly on the set. Nasty, vicious stuff.

Oh and the food sucked.”

11. If…

“If the film is terrible but the production is smooth, that’s one thing; you can make fun of what’s going on, kind of just kid around on set, and deal with it. If the film is both terrible and terribly run, then you’re really in for a shitty ride.

If the crew isn’t really cared for, then a shitty project makes it all the more unbearable to keep trucking for. Of course, one keeps on trucking anyway because it’s still a credit.

But there have been times when I’ve dipped out of a project because it’s unpaid, poorly managed, and a total piece of shit on the other end–no upside at all.”

12. Won’t do that anymore.

“I did a few straight-to-dvd movies when I was just starting out and honestly I was optimistic it was just my inexperience leading to thinking it was bad …. and that the shitty script would get taken care of by good acting, and the bad acting would get fixed with good editing and the bad editing was when I gave up.

It was all around bad from the start, but I thought some saving grace would swoop in and save it at some point. And that’s why I don’t do indie (or low budget, straight-to-dvd) films anymore.

Why am I gonna bust my ass 22 hours a day for someone else’s shitty art?”

13. This is funny.

“Kind of a funny story about the filming of Super Mario Bros in 1993. Read this in the IMDb trivia… I personally love that movie:

“In his 2007 autobiography John Leguizamo states he and Bob Hoskins hated working on the film and would frequently get drunk to make it through the experience. Both men apparently knew the movie would turn out bad, so they simply tried to make the best of it. He also stated he felt one of the biggest reasons the movie turned out the way it did was because the directors wanted a more “adult” movie while the studio, considering the source material, was looking for a children’s film.”

14. Interesting…

“I saw a documentary that interviewed crew from the first Star Wars movie. A lot of them thought what they were going was laughable and ridiculous.

They thought the movie didn’t have a chance in the theaters. I can only imagine their attitude on set. When the movie came out the discouraged crew members were quite humbled, proud that they worked on the movie, and felt sorry for not working harder for Mr. Lucas.”

15. Don’t have much input.

“At the moment I am working as a camera assistant on adverts tv and film. The most common problem I come across is, that the camera man knows that a shot the director wants looks like shit.

But unfortunately, the camera man is not really allowed much input. The shot keeps on looking like crap and the director blames the cameraman saying he is doing it wrong when really the shot would never work in the first place.

Spent many a shooting day on one shot that is scraped on edit.”

Men Whose Marriage Proposals Were Turned Down Talk About Their Lives After That

I knew a friend who asked his longtime girlfriend to marry him. She said no and he was absolutely devastated. It was very sad to watch and I don’t think he ever really got over it.

It’s always sad to hear about these kinds of stories but they happen all the time, unfortunately.

Here are some true stories from people on AskReddit who had their marriage proposals rejected.

1. Be patient…

“We met in her home country of Germany while I was traveling. I knew I was in love. We dated long distance for a while. Me flying to Europe. Her flying to the US. I suggested marriage so we could be together. She said no a few times.

I didn’t press. But I was patient and not being pushy. I knew she was worth the wait. Then it hit her that’s how we could be together. If we got married, we could live in a country together. The difficulties of being born on a different patch of dirt.

A few years later, I’m still married to my best friend and living with her in Germany. Not all no’s stay no. Life goes on.”

2. Intense.

“She had cancer.

I said we should get married because I had full medical coverage from my work. She said no, and over time we grew apart.

Haven’t talked to her in 15 years, don’t know if she died.”

3. Dodged a bullet.

“Dated a woman for over two years and popped the question. First time she said “I don’t know”.

A couple months later I asked her again, she said “Maybe.” I was pretty bent out of shape.

But then I found out she was sleeping with several of my friends so I dodged a bullet there really.”

4. Good thing you got dumped.

“Her dad former Navy kept saying we should wait. We put it off for a bit longer.

Fast forward another year. She dumped me. Father informs me she has been sleeping with A LOT of guys.. like more then 50 over the 2 yrs we dated. And was very happy i didn’t marry her. and apologizes to me for her behavior.

She then totally ghosting everyone including her family for about 6 months. Find out she moved 7 hrs away and was living under a house.. not a basement. under a house with her new bf… She calls her mom to come get her. Mother and father ask me to go get her and bring her home..

Good times.. good times.”

5. Wasn’t ready…but…

“I asked her right out of high school, but she wasn’t ready. We stayed together, went to college at the same school, spent the first year in separate dorms, then moved in together. Got married a few years later.

Our 20th is coming up.”

6. Moving on.

“I never saw her again. Less than a year later I met my wife.

We’ve been together 15 years.”

7. Yes..no…

“She said yes as I had a special occasion planned – one of those observation wheels and I proposed at the very top and we were in our way to a family event and I had a ring made and everything.

Then a few days later she said no. Everything fell apart. I was distraught. We continued dating for a while but it was long distance – other side of the world. When I visited it would be super awkward. Eventually he dad kicked me out. Was flying standby and was stuck in an airport for 4 days. Took me years to recover.

Now I am happily married and am glad it never worked out. I was not in a good place when I met her and her family were super controlling. It would never have worked.

The woman I married is super cool and is my best friend. Turned out better then expected.”

8. I take it back.

“I proposed, she said yes, but 1 month before the wedding she took it back. This is what happened immediately with my life.

I personally lost about $3,000 worth of deposits. My parents and her parents lost about $4000 each on deposits. Me and my parents are working class so it took years for us to financially recovered from this.

I spent $2,200 on a ring I didn’t want. My biggest regret and will say this anyone who listens. The engagement ring chain I bought it from wouldn’t take it back. I took it to pawn shops and they’d only offer a few hundred. This engagement ring store, bank on customers who wants the whole ring (stone, band, setting).

If you’re going to buy a ring JUST BUY THE STONE a gold band, setting you can get a better deal from a local jewelry store. Apparently my gem I bought was shit. Most of the cost of the ring was BS.

Most of my family was from out of state and a lot of people were pissed because they canceled their flight.

I had to go to the ER. So I didn’t leave my room, I couldn’t take any calls because everyone was pissed and I didn’t want to hear it. I was depressed and just stayed in bed. One day my roommate grabbed me and took me to the ER where the doctor treated me for severe dehydration and an infection.

What happened when I got over it? I became stronger for it. I didn’t propose to anyone until a decade later – honestly there wasn’t anyone that I didn’t love deeply enough to be in a committed relationship. But when I proposed I was in my thirties our relationship was more mature than my first time I proposed.

We’re now married for 13 years. SHe’s my best friend. When I have good news she the first person I want to tell it too… when I have bad news she’s the first person I want to tell it too. I financially recovered as well.

I learned my lesson about the engagement ring. Only paid $300 for it. She LOVED it and treasures it. After our 10 year miles stone we were doing so well, I told her to pick a wedding ring of any cost. She refused. She still wears that cheap $300 ring and loves it.”

9. Like a movie.

“We were dating for a little over a year but I was so sure she was the one. I drove 2 hours to see her at her college and went on a beautiful winter night walk and proposed.

She looks me right in the eyes and said, “Oh you thought this was serious? Well um I don’t know how to say this other than I have been saying other people. Well actually I have been seeing other women.”

I was stunned I got up put the ring in my pocket and walked to my car got in and drove away never looking back crying the whole time.

Haven’t seen or spoken with her in 7 years even though she has tried countless times to reach out. Now it’s a story I tell friends who are nervous about asking their significant others to marry them.

Reminding them that even if they say no it could be worse.”

10. Getting over the trauma.

“She was in trauma from a past relationship, and at that time I wanted to help her move on, and in that act I realised that I’ve fallen in love with her, as she’s the one who despite being in depression, helped me out of my social anxiety. I just couldn’t see her suffer

So I proposed to her, and got rejected, as she wasn’t ready to be in another relationship and since I confessed about love, she got more anxious and out friendship was temporarily over. We didn’t talk or have contact for months.

Later on, I somehow contacted her, we had a bit of talk, and asked how she was doing, and learnt that she has been shutting herself in her room minimising contact with people. I still had romantic feelings for her, but I wanted to be with her and help her move on so I insisted being friends again. We spent our time like that, and honestly she’s the only friend I had.

Time passed, and when I saw she’s getting back to her normal life, I proposed her again, and she accepted. It was a long way to that day. I’ve never been happier in my life.

It’s been 4 years since then, though we have arguements due to different views, but we always come up with a solution to resolve things. And I can say this with certainty that nobody can love me the way she does.

I feel lucky to have her in my life.”

11. Horrible at first.

“It was absolutely horrible at first.

I legit thought my life was ending as shortly after that she wanted to “take a break”. Pretty much she wanted to date her co-worker at Baker’s square, and had a really weird cult-ish relationship with all her co-workers. At first I was confused/upset, all of the above.

But weirdly enough one of her friends/acquaintance for me contacted me since she knew I was in a rough patch, completely innocently, and we hung out, and she even knew that I wanted to get back together with her at some point, so it wasn’t anything immediate.

Eventually, the girl I proposed to found out her co-worker boy toy was a douche and wanted to get back together with me, and obviously I had been fretting about it for like 3 months so I instantly said yes even though unknowingly I started forming a bond with her friend/my acquaintance.

Slowly, things just started deteriorating as I started getting honestly kind of suspicious that she wanted to get together with one of her other co-workers, and surprisingly I was actually right. She ending up breaking up with me again, and I thought I was gonna go through it all again, but this time the shock only lasted a few days since this time I kind of had closure.

Meanwhile, somehow I think the friend/my acquaintance/current girlfriend of 4 years knew that this was gonna happen, and was there for me when I needed it. Like both times for me it was super rough, couldn’t even function. Got together, and honestly I can’t even understand how I thought I was happy with my old girlfriend who I proposed to.

I even look back, and I’m realizing that even her family was fucked up. Her Mom was extremely controlling, and even (disgustingly) bragged about how she dated a boy in high school for a few years and broke up with him and hurt his feelings so bad that he moved for mental health reasons. Like, I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree?

To be quite honest though, I miss her dad A LOT. Like honestly, he messages me every once and awhile (I doubt his daughter knows) and basically I can just hear it in his voice that he would rather her date me then her new boyfriend since I had a pretty good bond with him.

Even so, I still don’t like to message back with anything too much since I’d somehow weirdly feel like it’s cheating on my current girlfriend who has the most chill parents I’ve ever met, and are super easy going. I honestly think my life would’ve been hell if I chose to marry my past girlfriend with a mom-in law problem.

Anyways that’s my story.”

12. Separate ways.

“I asked a woman after almost 6 years together. She said no, and added that maybe it was time for us to go our separate ways. Wow. Shock. But life has to go on.

About a year later I met a different girl and we were engaged within a year. We were both ready for marriage. That was 16 years ago. We’ve got three terrific kids, two boys that are exceptional athletes and a girl whose a brainy little nerd.

The lady who refused me eventually got married, had a couple kids, and got divorced. But she got married again. And had another kid. And got divorced again.

We completely lost touch several years ago.”

13. Nice!

“We were living together.

I asked, she said “No, I love you but I need to think about it. I don’t think I’m ready yet. Can you give me some time and ask later?”. A few months go by, I ask again, same response. A few more months, same deal. A couple more weeks and then she says “hey, what do you think of us getting married?”. I replied: That’s an excellent idea, why didn’t I think of that?

Our 39th anniversary is next month.”

14. We’ll see…

“Dated my wife in high school.

I was all wrong for her at the time, and it was going way too fast so we broke up on good terms. One of the last times we talked, I aksed her if she would marry me one day, she laughed it off and said no way, and said I was definetly not the marrying type.

Fast Forward to college, I was working full time and she was a law student, and she walked in to the liquor store I was the manager of. We talked for an hour, and it continued in the parking lot, just talking and catching up. At the end of the conversation as she was leaving, jokingly I asked her to marry me again. She laughed, I laughed.. and she said “we’ll see”.

Married 16 years in October.”

15. It’s all good.

“Said no, we broke up, got back together, got a job in Alaska for the summer and “forgot” to tell me.

Then we don’t talk for years. There was a shooting at my church. She calls me out of the blue to make sure I’m okay. After an awkward pause “Well I want to make sure you didn’t do something stupid like go after the shooter!” then she hung up.

But here is a good story. I was 20 and she was 18. We had been really close friends for years. We where in that awkward “should be date, or shouldn’t we?” phase. So we went out to dinner. She told me “you realize if we go this route, we’re getting married in a couple of years.” So we talked about what we really wanted out of life.

She wanted to be a Pastor’s wife. I believe God loves stupid people cause he made so many. We realized we both wanted different things from life.

Been friends for 20 years. Had a rough patch when she got married and the guy couldn’t comprehend why I would be that close to her and not want to marry her.

But now everything is good.”

16. A story about Dad.

“My dad proposed to a woman who said no. My dad was a violent alcoholic and she said she couldn’t be with him unless he got clean. Took him a little while, but he did it. He wound up meeting my mom through a match maker and they’ve been married 25 years.

If that woman never said no to him, he never would have gotten clean. It was the lowest point in his life. But it all brought him to my mom who makes him happier than ever.

My dad talks to her sometimes. She got married to someone else and they had a son who died from a medical condition.”

As they say, life goes on…

How about you?

Or you maybe YOU did the rejecting?

People Share Totally Embarrassing Memories They Can’t Forget About

This could be a little painful, so buckle up.

We all have certain memories from our past that still make us cringe in a major way. Maybe it happened in school, or at your first job, or when you tried to ask someone out on a date and they humiliated you in front of a big group of people.

Good times!

Let’s see what AskReddit users had to say about the memories that still embarrass the to this day.

1. Not a great opening line.

“I was interested in a guy but didn’t know how to start a conversation with him.

We were standing next to each other while preparing food for a barbecue and I just thought it was a good idea to start a conversation with “I like the feeling of touching raw meat”.”

2. School days…

“This was in school.

We were playing a game where one person chased everyone else, and when they touched you, you had to go “to jail”. That meant, you had to put your arms inside the torso part of your sweater, and the sleeves got tied around a pole. You had to get loose to be free again, either on your own or by the help of someone else.

I think I was about 11 at the time. I got caught and tied to a pole, but I was wearing a hoodie with a zipper, so I felt incredibly smart when I unzipped it from the inside and ran away shouting “HA!”

Thing is, I had forgotten to put on a T-shirt under the hoodie, and I was an early bloomer, so I basically showed the whole school yard my recently grown tits. Shudder.”

3. Still haunted.

“When I was 16 I got set up with a family friend’s daughter. We started dating in a long distance relationship. After a month or so it was school holidays and I went up to visit her. I didn’t have alot of money but I wanted to buy her a gift. A settled on a beautiful jig saw puzzle.

She wasn’t too happy about the gift. Because she was blind. Yes I bought my blind girlfriend a jigsaw puzzle. In the moment it seemed very appropriate because each piece was unique right? She can feel the pieces rights?? Pure effing cringe. Still haunts me.”

4. Didn’t know any better.

“I grew up in an extremely sheltered household so my brain just didn’t understand/know what racism was and we were trying to pick teams for basket ball and I tried to ‘organise by colour’.

I was a stupid child.”

5. Today’s Halloween, right?

“In 5th grade I went to school on Halloween Costume Day completely dressed up like a pirate. Makeup, costume, hair, everything.

Walked into school only to realize no one else was wearing a costume and that dress up day was tomorrow. Had to wait until lunch for my mom to bring me new clothes.”

6. That’s bizarre.

“The time my internet access was shot over a weekend, so I went to work as usual on Monday, and stayed and worked all day, and only found out I’d been fired the week before when I got home.

Small, very high-profile business. Everyone was acting weird all day.

I soft-broil myself to sleep in this memory.”

7. Not a great answer.

“Definitely that time my professor asked what I did over the summer, and I wanted to say “hanging around” and “catching up with sleep”. All I managed to blurt out was “sleeping around.”

That wasn’t even true!!”

8. Oh no!

“Once got my period in the middle of a scene in a junior school play.

I was 12/13.

That shit sucks.”

9. You blew it!

“When I was 16 I offered to take a girl I liked to the movies.

I approached the ticket counter and asked for one movie ticket, immediately realized I was an idiot, but was too embarrassed to rectify my mistake. She purchased her own ticket to the movie.

Still haunts me almost 10 years later…”

10. DRUNK.

“I was a bit drunk at a friend’s wedding and decided to scrawl all over two pages of her wedding book to fill up some space.

Later someone was looking at the book and I heard them say “Look at this! What sort of person does that?”.

I still feel bad when I think about it.”

11. Hahaha! Amazing!

“Went for an interview and handed the person my coat when they were trying to shake my hand.”

12. Almost made it.

“Trying to run away from home when I was six only to stop at the start of the driveway because I was always told that it was dangerous to walk on the street without an adult.

My parents have this really nice photo of me, with my little backpack, standing there looking really conflicted.”

13. You might have a problem.

“I fell into a fountain, not once but three different times in three different fountains, on a trip to Europe with a group of kids from school when I was In seventh grade.

Of course my crush and his friends went on this trip and they preceded to call me fountain girl till high school graduation.”

14. I knew a story like this was coming.

“Farted in class during a test back in middle school.

Everybody knew it was me but I was too awkward to confirm or deny it so I just acted oblivious. That fart must’ve been pretty awful because a bunch of classmates around me covered their noses with their shirts and the teacher cracked open a window.

Just the complete awkward silence that followed the fart and the feeling of everybody staring at me in disgust still makes me shudder with cringe whenever I think about it.”

15. This is terrible.

“We weren’t allowed to sleep with our doors shut.

I woke up earlier than everyone else most days and on this day decided to rub one out before everyone woke up. Grabbed the lotion, put it under my second pillow all smooth-like so no one would see it if they walked by. About half way through the deed my Aunt (raised me) rips her door open (which is positioned about 15 feet directly across the hall from my room and perfect view to my bed).

I was so f$@&ing scared that I literally sat straight up, one hand under the covers.. she saw me and goes, ‘heyyy….?’ and starts walking over. I sat there frozen, like I saw a bus speeding directly at me but I couldn’t move, junk still in hand..

She comes in my room and goes ‘whats going on sweety, are you okay? I just awkwardly say ‘yeah, you just scared me’. She laughs and sits on the bed next to me – directly on the pillow and hears a crunch.. looks at me, stands up and picks up the pillow, looks back at me (im mortified) and starts walking out.

She didn’t even turn back to look at me, just grabs the door to shut it and says, I think you’re old enough to sleep with this closed now’ I didn’t leave my room all day……..”

Those are great!

And painful…and we apologize for your suffering.

Okay, now we want to hear from you!

We look forward to hearing from you.

People Share Cringeworthy Moments From Their Past That Still Haunt Them Today

I have some memories from my younger days that just make me hang my head in shame and say to myself, “what the hell were you thinking, you IDIOT!”

Hey, we all have them.

And even though they’re still somewhat painful and embarrassing, it’s good to look back and laugh…if you can…

Folks on AskReddit opened up about the cringey memories they can’t seem to get rid of.

1. We can work on that!

“So for context I went to a really sheltered Catholic high school. So didn’t really know how the real world worked.

My first job when I was 16 and I’m being introduced to all my co-workers. On of them named Maurice (who was obviously homosexual) asked me if I was too.

I wasn’t but wanted to let him know I was cool with it ( again Catholic high school) and said “no but I’m open minded about it”.

To which he responded “we’re gonna work on that”. What an awkward summer. I cringe every time.”

2. Sleeping in class.

“I fell asleep in my high school history class, I was all the way in the back of the room so the teacher never noticed.

Until I farted in my sleep so loud that it woke me up and my head shot up and smacked against the back wall. Never heard the end of it

At the time nobody really reacted. Except the guy in front of me was just kind of shaking, he turned around to look at me and was laughing so hard he was crying. Also should mention my crush was two seats over.”

3. A nice ending.

“In the first grade I moved to a new school in a small town. Two months in I would literally lose bowel function for no apparent reason. Totally watery and intense abdominal cramps. I was shy and didn’t have any friends yet. I was embarrassed and would just sit there in my own mess until the teacher noticed.

This went on every day. Eventually they sent me to the principles office and the nurse, teacher, and my parents thought I was just seeking attention. Despite packing 2 new pairs of undies and pants each day I would still be soaked at the end of the day.

Over the next 2 weeks I kept getting in trouble. I was held in from recess and had to sit in the hallway alone when I ran out of clothes for the day.

I had to eat lunch alone and spent at least half of my days sitting by myself in the hallway staring at the wall.

When my parents finally took me to the doctor they found a strange intestinal infection with no cure. It eventually went away.

So for 1 month in a new school I was that shy weird kid who smelled bad and couldn’t participate in any activities.

I graduated HS 12 years later with the same small class of students.

It wasn’t until my 10 year class reunion that one of my classmates (now a nurse) told me they all felt so bad for me and never brought it up because they felt like I was being abused when they saw me sitting alone in the hall in my soaked clothing.

This restored my faith in how kind other kids can be.”

4. Called out.

“I was bullshitting my way through a presentation in college on tanks in World War 2 and this kid just got so sick of my shit that he called out from the back of the class and corrected me in front of the whole class while my professor avoided eye contact with me.”

5. Gift cards!

“So my mom had won this prize at a big shopping center. She was allowed to take 3 guests for a day of shopping that included gift cards at various stores and a $250 gift card at a restaurant of her choice for us to eat at. Anyways, it was a big deal and they had a film crew come and tape some of it for their website.

The reporter lady comes up to me when the food arrives and she’s like “that looks fantastic, what’d you get?” And I was caught off guard so I look at the camera and go “GIFT CARDS!”

Ultimate cringe and it took me about half a second to realize what she meant. When I think about it now at least I can laugh about it.”

6. Still cringing.

“I’m a Canadian and we had this show in the 2000’s called Radio Free Roscoe. I was obsessed with this show! I watched it religiously on the Family Channel. My aunt had a friend who was a makeup artist for the show and so she managed to get us on set to meet the cast and visit all the different places.

My 11 year old self was ecstatic! It was the most incredible thing to happen to me. My brother and make cousin went with us

We get to the set and it’s amazing and everything I had hoped it would be. We got to see them film a scene and see all the behind the scenes stuff, it was incredible. We went to do the meet and greet with the cast and I was so nervous but excited.

I’m an awkward girl and super oblivious especially when I’m nervous. Kate Todd (the female co-star) was being super sweet with me because I was the only girl in our group. She called me over to sit with her for the photos and used her hand to pat the seat beside her. Being oblivious I missed the seat pat and went and sat directly on her lap.

I’m 27 years old now and I still remember her saying “Oh! Um, Okay” in a super surprised voice. I was mortified that I just sat on her damn lap like a baby instead of beside her like she intended. I honestly couldn’t look anyone in the eyes again after that.

I still cringe to this day thinking about sitting on her damn lap. She was super sweet about it but I knew I had fucked up.”

7. Sorry, Colin…

“This guy in one of my classes in 8th grade I was friendly with bc he didn’t seem to be good friends with anyone else in the class. He was a nice kid just maybe a little awkward but we had good conversations about LotR so hey.

Then one day at the end of the period we were both packing up our stuff and he says “Hey, do you want to go out with me next Wednesday?”

Wasn’t interested in him that way, and I was so off guard that I froze like a deer in the headlights until I finally stammered “Uh, I think my mom has planssorrybye.” And basically ran out of the room. I still feel bad about it, every time I saw him in middle school and high school after that I felt terrible.

Sorry Colin.”

8. This is really bad.

“Oh man.

Some context, my best friend growing up was black. We were inseparable, we wanted to make video games together when we grew up, all that. Well, he went with me and another member of my family to the store.

As we were driving, a man nearly ran into my other family member’s car, and my other family member shouted, “F-ing n-er!” It got quiet in the car, then my other family member said to my best friend in the back, “You’re not the n-er I was talking to,” as a way to apologize.

I was young, but even then I knew something awful had happened. It completely changed how I looked at my other family member and how my best friend looked at my family. We stayed friends but I had to hang out at his house since he stopped coming to mine. Couldn’t blame him.

Super-cringy, life-changing.”

9. Bloody awful.

“My sons and their friend kicked their ball into the middle of a little pond at our local park. I let them use my walking stick to try get it out but they couldn’t quite reach. A man passing by with his son offered to help.

He got the ball but dropped my stick. As he was reaching for the stick he fell in! He laughed, we laughed and he went off home to dry up. He returned 10 mins later because once he got home he realised his phone was missing. His phone that contained baby pics of his son and newborn at home. We tried so hard to find that damn phone.

I still feel bloody awful.”

10. My idol…

“So when I was 8 or so, some of my parents’ friends came over, and they brought their son, who was a few years older than me. I used to really idolize that kid for some reason…he just seemed cool and was always friendly toward me.

So this particular day I happened to be lounging around in my pajamas watching television and I hadn’t expected company. I don’t know why, because wearing pajamas (especially as an 8-year-old boy) is not that big of a thing, but I was absolutely mortified when the kid came into the room to say hi.

So I ended up running to the closet nearby and shutting the door. This was right in front of the kid. My parents couldn’t get me out. The kid came up and through the door was like, “that’s totally fine, bud, there’s nothing for you to be embarrassed about, come out and play. If you want you can go change first.”

But I wasn’t having any of it. I was by this point more embarrassed about my reaction than being “caught” in pajamas, so I couldn’t bring myself to come out until the kid and his parents left like two hours later.”

11. Saying dumb stuff.

“I was in my early 20s, had a girlfriend of 3 years and we were like 2 years into our relationship, and one time after we had sex I said, and I still don’t know what possessed me to say this, god this is so embarrassing… I said, “where are you gonna find dick this good?”

It was so awkward. And I think about it like once a month because it is easily the dumbest thing I have ever said, and it makes me cringe so bad.

Someone punch me in the face.”

12. That’s pretty bad.

“Doing a practice for a play in front of a small crowd of like maybe 35 – 50 people when I sh*t my pants.

Middle of my lines a felt the wetness and had to run off stage. I kept myself locked in a room the rest of the day.”

13. Forgot she was there.

“The very first night my now wife spent at my place (had only been dating a week, but I was SUPER into her) we got shitty drunk before bed … the next morning I forgot she was there (still technically drunk) and ripped a once in a lifetime epic fart that was both echoing through the hallways and melting paint off the walls.

I remembered she was there when she audibly laughed and said “oh my God!” I pretended to still be asleep instead of addressing it. To this day I’m amazed she stuck around after that, but we’re now happily married.

Anyone that can survive that and still stick around is definitely a keeper … even if she still loves telling people that story years later.”

14. It was you…

“So I was having a psychological evaluation for a military school, the psychologist gave me two pieces of paper to draw a male and a female and name them. The male one was easy, I just have to draw myself and use my own name.

I was having difficulty drawing a female and couldn’t think fast so my stupid ass drew the psychologist because she was cute.

Then came the part where she started asking about the drawing, the male part went smoothly, when she asked about the name of the female I said “Actually it was you” (plus a smirk) then she straight up wrote the name of the drawing “Actually it was you”.

I still cringe about it up to now.”

15. Family vacation.

“Was a kid (10) in a family vacation in Hong Kong and we were all in a souvenir store. I was walking around with my brother (9) trying to find a cool toy to buy. It took me long enough to find one, but I was proud that I found it.

I was amused by it and started talking about it to him. It was a large strechy and bouncy toy that had a cartoonish face one it. I was saying things like “Wow! This is so cool!” and proceeded to make the toy bounce a lot. I brought the toy towards my brother’s face and shouted “BOING BOING BOING” and that’s when I realized that I wasn’t talking to my brother anymore.

It was a Chinese boy, assumably 10-12 years old. He stared at me with the most serious face ever. I legit felt so ashamed, and ran away. I didn’t bother to get the toy anymore.

I have never been so traumatized in my life that until this day I still think about that Chinese boy’s poker face.”

16. Did it work, though?

“Yelling at the top of my lungs “we are looking for love!”

At a homeschooler cookout when I was 13 to a group of girls… Raised my soda and everything.”

Ouch…we feel you, friends…and we hope you forget about those incidents very soon.

How about you?

Do you have a specific memory that still really makes you cringe today?

Tell us about it in the comments!

Please and thank you!

Movie Fans Talk About the Villains and Evil Characters Made Them Turn Against the Hero

Sometimes you root for the bad guy in a movie.

I used to think I was maybe the only person who did this, but it looks like I’m in good company with a bunch of folks who occasionally get enamored with the villains in movies and forget about the good guys and gals.

Do you do this, too?

AskReddit users weighed in on the movie villains that made them forget all about the heroes.

1. Interesting…

“Rumpelstiltskin in the “Once Upon a Time” TV series.

Depending on your viewpoint, his plans failed because 1) In that universe, Good Guys Always Win™ or 2) suckage of writers.

He was smart, tricky, beautifully manipulative, had a solid backstory that justified almost all of his actions (except for a few bits due to reason #2), and was one of the few who saw through the massive BS built around the show and its characters and could plan around it, only to have his plans fall through at the last minute, usually because of a hand-of-God last minute random thing (again, reason #2).

He should’ve been able to get everything he wanted and live happily ever after; he certainly worked harder than anyone else in that show.”

2. Oh yeah…

“Shere Khan in the live action Disney remake.

He wants to murder Mowgli because he’s afraid Mowgli will burn the jungle down. Mowgli then burns the jungle down.”

3. Hook.

“Captain Hook in the movie Hook, particularly at the end when he tries to get the kid to stay instead of going home with Peter Pan.

Like, I get it, dudes a bad guy and he’s just trying to steal the kid away when he says, “Remember how your father was never there? Look at all the things I’ve done for you.”

I came from a very neglectful home, and in rewatching this movie I remember how I would have wanted to stay with Hook so bad as a kid. In fact, if we didn’t know Hook was a villain, he looks like a much better father figure than Peter Pan until that point.”

4. This might cause some debate.

“Top Gun, Ice Man.

He’s right, Maverick is dangerous.

As I’ve gotten older…the more Maverick looks like a villain.”

5. The witch.

“Wicked Witch of the West.

We hate her cause she looks a bit gothy. But ditzy Dorothy killed her sister and went on to meddle stuff that’s none of her business. I’d be annoyed too.”

6. A great movie.

“Roy Batty in Blade Runner.

Batty wanted to gain his freedom and lead the other Nexus-6 models to safety. Instead, his dwindling ranks were hunted like rats. Although the Nexus-6 Replicants had a pretty bad reputation, Batty never gave any clues that he meant harm to the human race.

There may have been blood on his hands, but Batty only went for those directly involved with the Replicants or that were pursuing him. At the end of the day, he was just looking for answers from his creator.”

7. Poor guy.

“King Kong.

Dude’s minding his own business, living on a tropical island, and men show up, capture, and enslave him.

Fuckers deserved everything they got.”

8. A different take.

“Dinosaurs in Jurrasic Park.

The villain of Jurassic Park isn’t the dinosaurs; they’re just nature doing what comes natural. The villains are the creators, who put desire for profit and accomplishment above others’ safety. (“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should” isn’t just a meme, it’s the message of the movie.)

By the way, I used to roll my eyes at the sequels because it was unrealistic that people would put a desire for profit and fun above the safety of other people and of their own family.

Recent events have made me change my mind. People would take their children to the park that killed a large percentage of those who go, saying they “refuse to live in fear” and “have a constitutional right.”

It turns out the cheesy dinosaur movies understood human nature better than I did.”

9. Give Benny a break.

“Benny from Rent

He offered all his friends, struggling bohemians in NYC, free rent in-exchange for cancelling Maureen’s protest.”

10. He’s a villain, no doubt.

“Q from Star Trek.

Not that I hated the heroes but you just gotta love Q.

And he certainly is a villain, he kills members of the Enterprise crew and tortures entire species.”

11. The evil one.

“Dracula.

In the 90s version with Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder.”

12. Gremlins.

“The evil Gremlin.

He knew how to run a gang and party. Gizmo was a frigging pussy!”

13. Never thought I’d see this.

“Principal Rooney.

Ferris Bueller is a dick.”

14. A great villain.

“Hans Gruber from Die Hard because Alan Rickman was hot (RIP) and because Hans was so much smarter and more sophisticated than any bad guy I’d ever seen.”

15. Definitely a victim.

“Frankenstein’s monster.

The poor guy was literally born yesterday when his college-dropout, god-complex father abandoned him. Everyone hated and feared him and he had to learn everything from basic survival to human speech to reading on his own.

He was, unlike the movies, a genius and decently handsome, minus the dead eyes and paste-y complexion. He was still like 8 feet tall, and his height and haunting gaze were apparently enough to terrify everyone who saw him into a murderous frenzy.

He hid under a family’s house, and listened to their interesting and enviable life stories. He got sick of listening to people’s happy lives while he hid in fear, and befriended the family’s blind grandfather.

And then, he was attacked by the family of the man whom he had been able to call a friend for only a short time, getting shot for trying to find a friend. Then he immediately met the nephew of his father, who threatened and mocked him.

He snapped, because he realized no one ever did anything but hate and hurt him, so why should he do anything different? He killed the nephew, and framed the nephew’s maid for the murder.

What does our hero, Frankenstein, do? He lets the maid get executed because he doesn’t want to face consequences. Yeah, some hero.

Now, the monster doesn’t take it farther, he just asks Frankenstein to give him a wife/friend/someone who loves him. He knew he might have happiness and was more concerned at that point with being left alone to have a family.

What does Frankenstein do, when he hears his monster will leave him alone and they can both be rid of the anger and fear he created by playing God in the first place? He gives up halfway through and destroys the monster’s half-made wife.

Frankenstein’s Monster goes apeshit, as could reasonably be expected, and killed Frankenstein’s friend and his wife as revenge, and then fled to the north pole and offed himself because life is cruel.

So yeah, not the best guy, but between the fake doctor who has more ego than spine and systematically let all his friends die, and the monster who didn’t choose to be born and wasn’t given a bit of kindness that didn’t stab him in the back later, I pick the big guy.

The Monster wasn’t a good guy, but at least his bad actions had a reason, besides “I don’t care about other people,” and “I’m afraid of owning up for my mistakes.”

Well, there you have it.

Now we want to hear from the readers out there.

In the comments, please tell us about movies where you ended up rooting for the evil characters.

We can’t wait to hear from you!

Movies That Would Be Better With Unhappy Endings

Do you ever think about what some movies would be like if they didn’t have happy endings? Yeah they would!

Let’s see what AskReddit users had to say about movies they think would be better if they didn’t have a happy ending.

20. Boooooo!

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s

The ending of the book was that Paul lets her go. The point of the book was a critique on the author’s mother who would use people and run from her problems like Holly.

She spends most of the movie being charmingly shitty and it all works out. Boo.”

19. Be your own person.

“Grease!

Nobody needs to adopt a whole new persona for their “lover”. Be your own person dammit!”

18. Pissed off.

“How Dear John ends honestly pisses me off. Honestly the whole movie pisses me off. You fall in love over two weeks, you go away and she moves on, you’re heartbroken.

Come back and her new man is dying, so you sell your fathers coin collection to pay for him to get better, he dies and then you get back together???

So stupid lol.”

17. Different from the book.

“I can’t believe that nobody have mentioned Cujo.

Holy shit the ending of the book left me so shaken up that I needed a good 5 minutes to let it sink in.

While the film had the ‘everything-will-be-ok-freezeframe’ ending.”

16. Frozen 2.

“This may seem dumb but in Frozen 2 I hated the ending, the entire movies felt like it was lost and then right at the end when stakes were finally there and something could’ve been lost, nope Elsa rides in on her water horse and saves the day.

People like to say ‘It’s just a kids movie, relax.’ whenever i bring this up but plenty of kids movies and Tv shows have dealt with this kind of stuff and many are still loved to this day.

Imagine how cool an ending would be where after the kingdom was destroyed we get a small montage of the citizens of Arendell and the lost forest working together to rebuild the kingdom, showing that now they can finally be united as one instead of that stupid ending where Elsa leaves again.”

15. I never knew that…

“Rambo’s original ending was great where he ends up killing himself because of PTSD and not being able to readjust to society.

But it didn’t test well with the focus groups so they changed it to be more positive, and then obviously it spawned sequels which turned the series a bit more campy and lost the original message a bit.

But I think if they’d have kept the original ending it might not have done so well in the theaters, but would be looked back on as a bit more of a poignant story.”

14. Oh, Seymour!

“The original ending of Little Shop of Horrors should’ve stayed. Seymour wasn’t a good person, he’s a piece of shit.

When you fuel your own selfish desires like this, it can transform into a huge problem, and everyone suffered because of it.

Honestly, Audrey II should’ve won. Seymour doesn’t deserve a happy ending

But I must say in the original ending, I really hate the part where the old people are relaxing and then get attacked by Audrey II, it makes it a bit hard to watch. But the rest of the ending is just pure epic and terrifying in a good way

I’m referring to the 1980 film adaptation which is pretty good until the end in my opinion. The original ending of this version had Audrey II winning like every other time, but they changed it.

Otherwise, I fucking love this movie and its characters, even Seymour. I like Seymour as a character, but I just don’t think he’s some sympathetic hero who should get the happy ending.

So, yes, I’ve realized Seymour is a little more morally grey than I initially thought. It’s a little more complicated than “He’s a piece of shit”, but all the same, when you do the sort of screwed up things Seymour did, consequences can and will happen.”

13. Cookie cutter.

“The Devil wears Prada.

In the book, Andy does not give the clothes to her co-worker Emily. She sells them in a second-hand store to pay rent. And most of all, Miranda doesn’t send an “oh. Andy is great you should hire her” letter to the magazine.

They give a “cookie cutter” ending…”

12. Might have saved it.

“Passengers.

Chris Pratt dying and leaving Jennifer Lawrence with the decision of being alone or waking up another person from hyper-sleep would have saved that movie.”

11. Pretty Woman was dark!

“Pretty Woman.

In the original ending, he just dumps her back in the street. But test audiences didn’t like it, so they tweaked the movie and completely changed the ending. Made it a love story instead of what it was originally written as.

Gives the whole movie a different meaning. The original was much more gritty. Julia Roberts was a drug addict in the original.”

10. War of the Worlds.

“War of the Worlds.

No way the son makes it back alive.

I remember seeing it in theaters and enjoying myself. Then that scene happens and I instantly got turned off from the movie.”

9. Oldie, but a goodie.

“An old one, but My Fair Lady.

It’s based on the play Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw, and in that version Eliza realizes Henry treats her terribly and she deserves kindness, so she leaves him.

The musical/movie version is the complete opposite of that and annoys me more than it should.”

8. A bunch of BS.

“HANCOCK!!!!

That movie was sooooooo good until that bullshit love story was slapped in there!!”

7. Not a great ending.

“Legend of Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp.

The last 20 minutes of the film tie up all the loose ends, but they don’t match the atmosphere of the rest of the film.”

6. Have you seen this one?

“Butterfly Effect.

The cliffhanger ending and bittersweet ending are better than the happy ending, as it’s alternative ending movie.

It makes more sense with the overall plot.”

5. Leave it out.

“Wonder Woman.

The lesson near the end is that the god of war doesn’t exist and it’s just men who are fighting without supernatural encouragement. Then the real god of war arrives and that lesson gets ignored.

It would have been better movie if they left out the god of war and Wonder Woman couldn’t do anything to stop man’s violent nature.”

4. An interesting take.

“The Hobbit, but not in the way you think.

The big issue with those movies is that they focus too much on the RING, when in reality, it wasn’t super dangerous at that point. The whole point was that Gandalf DOESNT suspect anything yet.

It should’ve just been a magic ring until the very last scene, where Bilbo stands at his porch, and all of a sudden starts frantically looking for his ring, only to give it…the look. bam. Cut to black.

None of this full circle crap, cut out old Bilbo and Frodo, just end the happy fairy tale with the revelation that something is wrong…”

3. The third installment.

“Back to the Future III.

Should’ve ended with Doc leaving a hidden message in the past for Marty (or delivering him another letter!) thanking him for his friendship and letting him know that he’s content living out his days with Clara.

I hate that flying fucking steampunk train and Doc’s Willy Wonka-ass clothes and that creepy child.

It still would’ve been a happy ending, I guess. Just a bittersweet one rather than an all-out goof.”

2. Fairy tale ending.

“I can’t believe no one’s mentioned 28 days later. The official release that was In theaters/DVDs has Jim, Hannah, & Selena in some fairytale ass cottage in the mountains knitting a HELO quilt & they’re seen by a fighter jet.

In the original ending, Hannah & Selena take Jim to an empty hospital & try to save him but he dies on the table. Selena tells Hannah that they have to keep moving & the last shot is of them still wearing the dresses, covered in blood, carrying guns, & presumably walking towards their death. It was changed to the happy ending because test audiences didn’t like how sad & hopeless the original felt.”

1. Okay…

“Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory

Charlie and Grandpa Joe blatantly ignored Wonka’s request that no one try the fuzzy lifting drink. The only reason Charlie was able to relinquish the gobstopper was because he was the only one to evade catastrophe.

He, moreso Grandpa Joe, were no more deserving for the empire than the other kids.”

Some pretty interesting movies to think about with different endings…

Now we want to hear from you! Yeah, you!

In the comments, please tell us what movie you’d like to see with a totally different ending.

People Share Insults People Say That Sound Like Compliments

You’ve been here before: someone gives you a compliment and then a few minutes later it dawns on you…HEY, THAT WASN’T A COMPLIMENT! THAT WAS AN INSULT!

And then you get offended and start crying and you’re not friends with that person anymore…at least that’s the way it works for me…

What are some insults that people throw out that are cleverly designed as compliments?

Here’s what AskReddit users had to say.

1. Keep trying!

“I love what you’re trying to do with your hair…”

2. Ouch…

“Good for you.

This is passive aggressive through and through.”

3. That’s not nice.

“My grandma used to tell us that if you ever met an ugly baby you should said “wow that is SOME BABY”.”

4. Oh, Grandma.

“My grandma always says people are “good and kind” when they get on her nerves.

They think shes a sweet old lady, when shes really saying they’re “good for nothing and kinda stupid”.

I got it engraved on a mug for her.”

5. Standing out.

“That outfit is really brave.”

6. Thank you?

“You’re much smarter than you look.”

7. The very least.

“I was doing a timed work skills test a month into a new job and it took me forever so he let me do it again.

It took just as long the second time and he said, “Well… at least you’re consistent.””

8. Who would actually say that?

“Someone once said to me “you aren’t as horrible as everyone told me you’d be”.”

9. Packing on the pounds.

““You look…. healthy” where I’m from, the nice way of saying someone has gotten fat.”

10. You’re really doing it!

“You’re so confident!

This has got to be a kick to the nuts. Said in the right tone that must suck.

Cuz you know homeboy built up quite some courage to rock those assless chaps and now Aunt Karen just dropped that bomb on you at the family Christmas party…”

11. Major eye roll…

“I love my mother, but she used to hit me with this.

She’d say, “You know what I love about you – you just don’t care what other people think” when I’d leave the house without makeup. ?

12. Well, gee…

“Your sister is beautiful and you are…smart”

13. No respect.

“With all due respect,…” when it’s clear none is due.”

14. Not a good thing to hear.

“You are impossible to underestimate.”

15. Over sharing.

“One of the guys I was dating told me ‘you share your emotions and feelings quite often’.

I took it as I probably talk too much about things and shouldn’t, but he told me that no it’s a good thing and it helps. Still made me think twice the next time I wanted to share things.”

16. An old classic.

“Classic chubby girl insult: “But you have such a pretty face!””

17. That’s so rude.

“While waiting tables, an old woman told my coworker that he’s “handsome for a Mexican”

Biiitch he’s just handsome.”

18. Insulted.

“That reminds me so much of “you’re a lesbian?? but you’re so pretty!!”

Like, good job insulting both my people and my taste in people in one swift blow.”

19. Some people need to hear this.

“I hope you have the day you deserve.”

20. I might’ve heard this one before…

“You’ve got a face for radio.”

21. Smart…for a girl.

“In the line at Walmart there was an old lady and a man trying to figure out how much money they needed to pay and when I said the amount,

He told me that I was pretty smart for being a girl.”

22. Name the movie!!!

“It’s understanding that makes it possible for people like us to tolerate a person like yourself.

-Abe Froman”

23. Is that good or bad?

“You have completely met my expectations”

24. Very insulting.

“You talk so eloquently” “you speak so well” towards a black person as if we all talk like we’re from the depths if the hood.”

25. Hahaha.

“If you are in the South, “Bless your heart”.”

26. Not sure how to take that.

“You haven’t changed a bit!”

27. Who are you?

“You look so pretty I didn’t even recognize you.” My mom said that to me one day when I was leaving for high school. She totally didn’t mean it to be an insult, but I felt that one.”

28. Fashionista.

“I love how you just wear anything!”

29. Growing up…and into…

“Oh, I see you’re finally growing into those ears.”

30. Carry the weight.

“You carry your weight well.

Said to me by a much thinner friend.”

31. Never thought of that…

“I’m a little surprised this isn’t on here.

I heard that stewardesses will say “See you next time” to airline passengers that have been particularly troublesome. Sounds innocent until you abbreviate it “C U Next Time”.”

32. You look…

““You look tired”.

Just another way of saying you look like shit.”

33. How do you interpret this one?

“You really are something else.”

34. No one wants to hear this.

“Well, aren’t you precious?”

35. A modern classic.

“Cool story bro.”

Ouch…those really leave a sting, don’t they?

Okay, now it’s your turn!

People Open up About How They Knew Someone Was Obsessed With Them in an Unhealthy Way

I’ve had people tell me about getting stalked by people who became obsessed with them and it is downright scary.

For some folks, a switch just flips and they become infatuated with people to such an unhealthy degree that something needs to be done about it.

Has this ever happened to you?

Here are some pretty creepy stories from AskReddit users about when they realized someone was obsessed with them in an unhealthy way.

1. Really creepy.

“I was bartending at a local hole in the wall and I had a regular that was nice & flirty (typical bartender/customer stuff). One day he says to me “You were at John’s* house Sunday morning. You guys a thing?”

I asked him how he knew I was there & he said he saw my car. I was a little taken aback but I was parked on the main road & my car was fairly distinctive, so I didn’t think much of it. A couple weeks later he’d made a joke that I was never home, cos my car was always gone when he passed by.

That made the hair on my neck stand up, but again I don’t exactly live off of the beaten path, so ok. When I really ???? that it was more than casual observations was when he started complimenting me on different outfits & hairstyles I wore on my days off or prior to my shift.

He’d also make comments about receiving packages or coming home with after shopping (“You should find someone who would carry those groceries into the house for you. I’d never make you carry the bags in the house after all that shopping you did on Saturday.”)

It was really creepy and I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched for a long time.”

2. Followed.

“This guy at college would follow me EVERYWHERE. One day, I just went out to buy my lunch and he came with me. He didn’t buy anything, just followed me. Even when I told him he was making me uncomfortable, he still would not leave me alone. I didn’t wanna sound rude though.

Eventually, I started trying to get on the bus with me when I would head home. That was the last straw for me. The next time He tried to follow me onto the bus, and actually managed to step on, I pushed him off and urgently told the driver to close the doors.

The driver instantly took the hint and shut them. I told him the guy was stalking me, showed my student ID which allowed me on the bus for free, and took a seat.

The next day, the guy had the audacity to ask me why I didn’t let him to home with me. I told him to stop following me around from then on.”

3. DON’T send nudes.

“When she started sending nudes to my work email because I asked her to stop contacting me. I changed my snapchat account and blocked her number, but my work email is on my company’s website, so she found it.

That was a awkward conversation with my IT guys.”

4. Ex-girlfriend.

“When I was stationed in Korea and my ex girlfriend kept emailing my wife from different emails pretending to be women in Korea that I was cheating on her with.

My wife and I had a pretty good laugh about it and she eventually came clean. Her husband was not happy about her still obsessing over me.”

5. At church.

“My husband was deployed in Afghanistan so I had to go to church alone. One week, an older man (maybe 65) approached and said, “Can I sit here?” I said sure. We had a bit of conversation and he said, “My wife died a few weeks ago and I was just praying this morning for God to send an angel I could sit with at church today.” He seemed like a sweetheart, I felt bad for him.

He sat next to me for a few weeks in a row. It didn’t bother me too much. I brought him some homemade jam. He told me about how his son was also deployed.

I mentioned he should really try getting into a church small group, that it would be great company for him. I set him up with one of the best. He said he wasn’t sure how to get to the venue. If he gave me his number, could I tell him where the place was? He was confused. I said, sure.

Well, once I texted him the directions, I don’t think he ever went to the group, but he had my phone number. He started calling 8+ times a day, saying “Hello beautiful” and begging me to meet him at Waffle House.

For the remainder of my husband’s 6-month deployment, I did not go to church. I was really worried about running into that guy. I blocked his number and luckily have never seen him again. Months after my husband got back, I told him what happened and of course he was livid.”

6. Total psycho.

“I broke up with a physically abusive boyfriend, and at the time I worked about a 25 minute drive from where I lived (always drove the same road home).

My schedule never changed and I began seeing his car and occasionally his friends’ cars along my drive, always parked off from the road a little and around some seriously sharp corners. At first I didn’t think anything of it, until it began happening at night (I’d do inventory every Tuesday night and be at work until 10pm; this was my only full night shift).

This went on for about a month, until I started switching my routes to and from work because I was getting creeped out. Easter ended up rolling around and I, again, had to stay late to help my coworker change the signage (I worked at Subway). It was getting close to 9pm, and the work phone began ringing off the hook (was my ex).

My coworker, who knew what was going on, just muted the phone and we continued doing what we needed to do. Shortly after we saw my ex standing outside, in the middle of the road staring into the restaurant.

I hid behind the counter as soon as I could and my coworker ended up telling me when he left. Got calmed down until we got to my car to find out he broke into my car and left a bunch of weed and a threatening note.

I bought a new car the next week; fully equipped with a very loud alarm.”

7. Trying to be friendly.

“As a bus driver you’re expected to be cheerful and chat with whoever while idle. A regular passenger started riding around, always in the front seat. Over a week or two the conversation got quite personal, always by her initiative.

I told my supervisor about this just to cover my ass. Then she started to bring me gifts, cookies, candy beverages. Finally, she invited me over for a meal, so her mom could meet her boyfriend! I had zero interest in the young woman, didn’t want anything to do with her.

Luckily, she moved or just avoided the bus during my shift.”

8. Stalked by Dad.

“When my dad showed up to my place of work.

We had been estranged, but he knew I worked at Starbucks and had traveled from location to location to figure out where I had transferred to and when my shifts were scheduled.

Even had the balls to call the store and pretend to be me to get my schedule information. I saw his vehicle parked out front and freaked out and ran inside.

He followed in after about thirty minutes (right as the morning rush was hitting full swing) and started berating me in front of all my coworkers and customers.

Thats the day I went and learned about restraining orders.”

9. No thanks.

“When he started acting like he couldn’t survive without me directly by his side at all times. I had met him a week earlier, only spoke to him briefly, and never flirted or had any romantic or sexual interactions with him.

He literally just stalked me and physically put himself at my side like a Siamese twin, going as far as pushing other people away from “his” spot, and threatening to kill himself when I brought it up with him. Yeah, no thanks.”

10. That’s kind of scary.

“My sister brought home “my” spiral notebook from school.

She thought it was mine because it had my name written and doodled covering every page.

Turns out it was a girl who was obsessed with me.”

11. Online crazies.

“I was chatting with a gal online through a dating site.

She was nice enough and we were having good conversations, but had not yet even began speaking on the phone. It turns out a friend of hers was friends with one of my friends. Small world.

I’m at home one day puttering around and I hear a knock at my door, I look out the window and see a car I don’t recognize. My hink meter starts pinging so I pull a butcher knife, brace my foot so the door can only open a bit and crack the door.

She is standing there and tells me she got the address from my friend and asking to come in. I was weirded out and declined, she got upset and started crying and telling me how this was supposed to be a pleasant surprise. I tried to send her on her way gently and she got pissed and stormed off and drove away.

I thought that was it. Then she starts emailing me saying she loves me, then starts calling me, (my idiot friend gave her my number), and leaving gifts at my door that would be there in the morning.i lived in Mesa, AZ, she was in Tucson about an hour away. I eventually had to threaten her with a restraining order.

My friend had talked to hers about what was going on she said, “Oh yeah, she’s nuts, she’s done this before.”

I felt a lot better when I left the state.”

12. I WANT YOU BACK.

“Not me but my sister is obsessed with her ex. She cheated on him and is desperate to get him back. She constantly tries to get in touch with him like getting my little brother to FaceTime him through his iPad cause she knows he won’t answer her.

She says she thinks about him every day and will text him on holidays like Easter just to say have a nice day or whatever. They had a conversation and after that she looked up the program he was in at the college he goes to and found out that his program was canceled because of covid19 so she doesn’t understand why he hasn’t gotten in contact with her.

She wrote a letter a couple days ago and is planning to go to his house and leave it at his door. Originally, her plan was to pay me to go ring the doorbell and give it to him but like hell nah lol. Whenever I tell her to back off she just says I don’t understand cause I’ve never been in a relationship:/ it’s been months of crap like this.”

13. Obsessed with the teacher.

“It was really sad.

It was a High School student I was teaching. She found out where I lived and used to conveniently be in the area and then just parked in front of my house. I had to report her. We all met with the principal and a counselor.

She was a senior so we all agreed if she stopped doing that and take another class I wasn’t teaching, we’d let her graduate at the school.”

14. Fatal attraction.

“Had a friend.

She was a bit eccentric, we were really close until she started going totally off the edge – hid my bicycle, stood outside my house screaming obscenities, told everyone we had a sexual relationship, belittled my abusive past, screaming right into my face.

Tried to stab our common friend… Twice. The thing that pulled alarms in my head was when i told her I’ll be heading home from my boyfriends soon and she can come for a visit in a couple of hours if she wants.

Got home in under an hour, she was waiting near my apartment building and started accusing me of lying to her, there was absolutely no telling her that I wanted to settle a little, take a shower and eat something, I did not say I’d be home in two hours. I managed to cut her out of my life.

Few years later she started blowing up my mothers phone (one cant find my number anywhere) demanding for her to give my number explaining all this pretty lunatic nonsense, but how she needed me because I’m one of her apostles and she needs me to start her own religion, because she is “his son, another of Adam and Eve”, and this was not even the craziest shit.

Quite confidental seeing that a few years before this she was super paranoid about my mother since she works for the military. And yes, previously this girl had a delusion that she is re-incarnated Jesus.

After this I’ve heard through friends that I’m Peter, Venus and latest probably was that I’m a whore. So yeah that was the point I was more than sure she was obsessed with me.”

15. That’s wild.

“She went to my grandmother’s house and got my phone number from beside the phone on the little board in the kitchen…

…5 years after we dated and I had severed all ties with her and anyone that still associated with her.”

Yikes…be careful out there, everyone.

People Talk About What They Thought Was Really Expensive or Cheap When They Were Kids

When I was young, there was a family in our small town and they drove a convertible…

And I thought they were THE SHIT.

Who actually OWNS a convertible, I used to think to myself. I believed they lived in a mansion, went to country clubs, and probably had maids and butlers.

Looking back on it years later, I think it was actually kind of a middle-of-the-road car (I can’t remember what kind, exactly). The point is that when you’re a kid, you have little or no concept of money and what things really cost.

But it always makes for hilarious stories later on!

Let’s dig into some stories from folks on AskReddit.

1. The good stuff.

“Always had sparkling grape juice as kids but only for New Years.

Seemed like such a lavish bottle. They’re cheap as hell… but only having it that often made it feel so special.”

2. She loves it!

“It never occurred to me that some food was more expensive than other food. I 100% thought my mom made spaghetti all the time because it was her favorite.

I was much older when I realized it was because it would feed a lot of people very cheap.”

3. Three flavors.

“I always thought Neopolitan ice cream must’ve been the apex of ice cream decadence and expense because you got not 1, not 2, but THREE flavors in one tub!”

4. Well, it turns out…

“Food colouring and fondant icing for baking. Thought it was sooo expensive and that’s why only fancy cakes used them.

Turns out they cost like £1 each.”

5. A painful lesson.

“The dentist.

Didn’t think I’d be in debt from getting teeth fixed.

My husband and I are having to take turns with the dentist this year. He needs more work so I’m going to let him go first once things open up, because we can’t afford for us both to go.

Luckily I just a need a few fillings, he needs a root can*l and a crown.

He had a bunch of work done last year too. I don’t even know why we have dental insurance if it covers so little.”

6. Costs a fortune.

“Disneyland.

Honestly I didn’t really have a guess on how much a ticket was but we got to go every couple of years so I figured it was no big deal.”

7. Getting fancy.

“Going out to anything other than fast food was an expensive night out.

Even Applebees.”

8. You must be loaded.

“Disney movies.

I grew up poor and my dad would always get the forgettable off brand versions of popular cartoon movies. Instead of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, for example, I’d get to see The Secret of the Hunchback. Lots and lots of that.

When I saw a kid who owned a REAL Disney movie on VHS I assumed they were very rich. I didn’t realize you could buy several in one month and not have to declare bankruptcy even without being rich.”

9. It adds up.

“Curtains.

Never thought of them being valuable.

Guess what, if you have someone make them fit your place they cost a fortune.”

10. Don’t throw those away.

“Those self-stick bows you put on gifts.

I used to think they were super expensive because everyone in my family used them over and over. We had a few that we used so much, they were recognizable. We had a few “fancy” ones. Wrapping paper too!

Based on how careful my family was about not tearing it and how my grandmother would fold it, I figured it must be really expensive…yeah, both are super cheap.”

11. Everybody’s doing it.

“College.

My oldest brother and all his friends went to college, never mentioning the expense.

As a kid, I thought it must be cheap because “all the guys are doing it.””

12. We’re staying in tonight…

“Going out to eat.

I think I thought it cost like $10-20 or something. I never understood why we didn’t go to more restaurants when I was a kid. Thought my mom was just cheap.

Turns out feeding a family of five at mediocre restaurant can easily cost over $100.00 if people get drinks, appetizers, and dessert.”

13. My life is over!

“I stood on our toilet seat and broke it when I was around 10. I was so upset thinking that it was the biggest mistake of my life and would cost my parents so much money.

I replaced my toilet seat last week and it cost me $6.”

14. Only for the very wealthy…

“Balloons.

Such an extravagance! Once a year only, for your birthday party – and even then you get just one each. Be careful, don’t pop it!

I prized that thing – it provided entertainment for days.

You can buy 100 for a fiver.”

15. Moms do that kind of stuff.

“Always thought clothing was cheap.

Wasn’t until I was in college that I realized I always had new clothing because my mom never bought anything for herself for life 15 years.”

16. That’s all I’ll need!

“Ten dollars is a lot of money for a kid.

I thought I could run off to California, pay for the flight, food, and downpayment for a celebrity mansion with ten dollars.”

I don’t know why, but I got a HUGE kick out of those responses.

Now it’s your turn!

In the comments, please share the things that you wrongly thought were really expensive or really cheap when you were a kid!

We look forward to hearing from you!

People Share Songs They Think Are Great but Most People Haven’t Heard Of

This will be a lot of fun! I always love to discover new music, so this will be a great opportunity to do that.

I personally have a TON of songs that I love that think are Perfect Tens that most people probably haven’t heard of…

Those are just a few of examples. Want to hear about some more?

Let’s see what folks on AskReddit had to say.

1. Heard this one?

You Go Down Smooth- Lake Street Dive.

Lake Street Dive is slept on as HELL. This was the first of their songs that I heard, but now I adore their entire discography and have seen them three times in concert.

All of their albums have incredible bangers, but since they added Akie Bermiss for the last album/EP their energy has been off the charts. Young Boy, Angioplast, Red Light Kisses, and Baby Don’t Leave Me Alone With My Thoughts are some of their best songs!”

2. I’ll have to check this out.

Klaatu – Calling Occupants of interplanetary craft.

Interesting fact this album leaked in the seventies and everyone was convinced it was recorded by the Beatles secretly.

When it turned out to be a completely different group it was forgotten.

Still a beautiful prog rock sound though.

3. Should have been a hit.

To The Dogs or Whoever by Josh Ritter

Somewhere between outright lyrical brilliance and clever, mischievous wordplay. Smart and still earthy.

It could have/should have been the millennial American Pie but only caught a fraction of the audience it deserved.

4. Underrated.

Mew – Am I Wry?, No

One of the most underrated songs from one of the most underrated bands, directly from Denmark.

5. Give it a listen.

Story 2 by clipping.

Probably my favorite song by them. Not only is there a compelling narrative that drives the song, but given the rather tense nature, it speeds up not just the flow, not just the beat, but the time signature.

Goes from 3/4 at the beginning to what I think is 14/8 at the end. Haven’t seen something quite like it in any other rap song.

6. Pinback.

Good to Sea by Pinback

Harmonized vocals and cool bass hooks.

7. The Hotelier.

Your Deep Rest and Housebroken by The Hotelier.

Your Deep Rest being a very personal depiction of losing someone to suicide and Housebroken being (in my eyes) a simultaneous attack on animal and domestic abuse.

8. A beautiful song.

The state v.s. Thomas Light by The Protomen

Easily the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard, with a brilliant buildup, leading to a wonderfully tragic conclusion!

9. A twofer.

Plea From a Cat Named Virtute by the Weakerthans.

It’s the first in what eventually became a four song series.

Also, Cigarettes and Saints by The Wonder Years.

10. Rainbow Kitten Surprise.

Hide by Rainbow Kitten Surprise.

My favorite band out there rn. I was gonna see them last week (even had M&G tickets) but obviously that got postponed til god knows when.

I was so excited to show them the tattoo I got! It’s the lyrics “the quiet die young” from Painkillers.

Also 10/10 recommend (from the same album) Its Called:Freefall.

11. An Icelandic song.

Vor í Vaglaskógi by KALEO is an amazing song!

It’s in Icelandic and is absolutely beautiful

12. A rock opera.

Majestic – Wax Fang

Amazing rock opera.

13. M Ward.

Chinese Translation by M Ward

I would always play this song for my kids when they were younger and my daughter would call it “Chinese Tarajalation,” then one day she said Chinese Translation and it made me sad.”

14. From Norway.

Homesick by a Norwegian band called ‘Airbag’

If you like psychedelic rock and have heard the likes of Pink Floyd or Porcupine Tree, this song is pure class.

15. This sounds cool.

Chinggis Khan by The Hu.

They are a Mongolian band who combine traditional instruments and throat singing with modern rock and synth sounds.

They are totally awesome!

16. From another time…

Dengue Fever – “Escape from Dragon House”

A song that sounds like it’s from another time, but not a time you’re familiar with. The story of this band is incredible. They started out as a cover band of rock n roll artists from Cambodia, most of whom were wiped out by the Khmer Rouge in the 60s and 70s.

A whole music scene disappeared with little evidence remaining, aside from what people had saved on tape cassettes. Dengue Fever has also done a lot to preserve the music from that time period in Cambodia.

I also recommend looking up a lot of the artists they covered in their early career like Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron, and Sinn Sisamouth.

17. A fantastic mix.

The Comet is Coming- Summon the Fire.

Easily in my personal top ten.

The combination of what sounds like urban jazz and funk electronica makes for a fantastic mix.

18. Solo stuff.

What it Is – Mark Knopfler

Not enough people know how good Mark Knopfler’s solo albums are.

Shangri-La and Sailing to Philadelphia are two of his finest.

19. Time to fly.

Levitation by Beach House.

Makes me feel like I’m flying.

20. A tragic song.

PROM / KING by Saba.

Incredible rap about his friend who got shot and killed in the projects in Chicago when they were just growing up and coming into their own.

21. Time for some metal!

Anything by the band Stratovarius.

They’re a disbanded 90’s Finnish power metal band.

My favorite album was they’re final one Enigma: Intermission II.”

22. Check it out.

“Soldier, Poet ,King” by The Oh Hellos.

Just recently heard of the band but I got hooked on pretty easily.

They got some pretty cool songs if you wanna check them out.

23. I like the title.

Cold Beer by Jesse Stewart

This is not his original song, the original song is Cry Tunes by Donny Dumphy, but I think most would agree this version is much better.

(Editor’s Note: Caution, there’s blood in that video link.)

24. Devastating.

Limousine by Brand New.

A brilliant song with a brilliant framing device.

One of the most devastating songs of all time.

25. A collaboration.

When Good Dogs Do Bad Things By the Dillinger Escape Plan w/ Mike Patton.

If you like hardcore… this is heaven.

26. Sounds promising.

Texas Sun – Leon Bridges on vocals; Khruangbin backing him up.

This a sort of soft rock/alt/country love song. Just give it a shot and see what you think.

27. I wonder what this is like…

Celestial Elixir by Haken.

Although, due to the circusy parts I’d give it an 8/10 overall.

Without the circusy parts 10/10.

29.

Bread – Guitar Man.

It’s a great short story on a traveling guitar player who cares for only one thing: finding a crowd to play for, playing, then finding the next crowd, and so on.

The song happily builds up the story, then breaks into sadness as he connects profoundly with his audience, then back to happiness all around and more build up, then a tragic twist occurs.

All while the array of background instruments slowly expands, and eventually crescendos into an extatic crowd and its euphoric shoutcasters, while a perfectly placed violin rounds the whole song off with a simple set of notes that together with the story, the melody, the crowd, and with you, drift away and fade out.

It’s such a perfect balance between major and minor — it gets me every time.

It’s so incredibly fucking well done that I cannot understand why this is not a classic. Seriously: if anyone listens and has an idea, then tell me. Reply and give it your worst. I want to know if I’m biased or insane or plain right here.

Thanks for all the recommendations, people of Reddit!

Now we want to hear even more from all of you.

In the comments, please share recommendations of songs you absolutely love but most people don’t know about.

We look forward to hearing from you!
