A Mom’s Comics Capture Distance Learning in All Its Glory

All of us are coping with 2020 in our own ways.

Some of us are drinking, some of us are screaming into pillows or crying in the shower, and some of us are grabbing tight to any personal outlet of creativity we can muster the energy to use.

For author, illustrator, and mother of two Adrienne Hedger, that means shifting the subject of her beloved comics to capture the insanity of working from home while your kids are learning from home.

Here are 12 of my personal favorites.

12. Yeah the answer is no.

How about you stop asking.

11. You have to assume someone’s camera is always on.

It’s taking spying to a whole new level.

10. There’s just so much to manage.

Take a deep breath.

9. I’m with the kid on this one.

Time has no meaning.

8. This is known.

It happens to the best of us.

7. This has been the best part of Zoom.

You know I’m right.

6. Bless elementary school teachers.

All of the time, but especially now.

5. And yet you do handle it.

Because I mean, what choice do we have?

4. It is a time-honored tradition.

Whether in person or online.

3. If you can help, please do.

Some struggles might be greater than your own.

2. I think we all know the answer to that.

Kids, am I right? And yet you kind of identify.

1. Why are they like this?

Oh, right, because they’re your kids.

I think we can all relate to these!

How Your Tattoos Might Be Messing With Your Sweat Glands

Tattoos are very common today. Back in the day, only fun ladies and military dudes (or I suppose convicts) really sported ink on a regular basis, but since the nineties, they’ve continued to trend as a common, if permanent, accessory.

Perhaps that’s why scientists are really just beginning to wonder whether or not there could be any long- or short-term effects of having ink deposited right beneath your skin – and this recent study seems to conclude that one of those effects could be a poor ability to sweat.

The paper was published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, and featured a pretty small sample size of 10 participants. The subjects wore tube-lined suits containing warm water, which induced them to sweat – though skin covered by a tattoo or tattoos produced 15% less sweat than skin left unmarked.

This research joins more like it, like another small 2017 study that used an electric current to produce sweat, and found that inked skin produced 50% less perspiration, but is belied by at least one study that found no difference in sweating ability between inked and non-inked skin.

There doesn’t seem to be conclusive evidence, nor does the study make any comment on why or how a tattoo could affect one’s ability to sweat.

For now, it seems like you’re safe to continue amassing as much ink as you like, though if this does eventually prove to be an issue, the more tattoos you have, the more trouble you might have cooling off on a hot day.

Then again, people with full body tattoos have been staying cool with no trouble since forever, so you’re probably fine either way.

You do you, my friend, and leave the scientists to their business.

You Might Want to Center Your Holiday Decor Around These Adorable Baby Grinch Dolls

You’ve probably spent years perfecting the balance of Santa, Mrs. Claus, the reindeers, and that blasted Elf on the Shelf that litter your shelves, walls, mantles, and the like, but listen – sometimes, when something adorable and delightful comes along, you have to be willing to mix things up.

And as family holiday films go, who doesn’t love How the Grinch Stole Christmas?

It’s sweet, wholesome, funny, has a great message (plus Jim Carrey!), and the best part?

No one expects these cute little baby Grinches to move and get into some kind of trouble every night.

The dolls are 18 inches long, weighted, and hand-painted – the latter part is the reason one will set you back around $300.

They’re from the Etsy shop Worbla Crafts, where you can also nab yourself a Pennywise doll for your autumnal decor, or a Baby Yoda doll that’s obviously perfect year round.

The baby Grinch, modeled on the baby we meet in Carrey’s version of the story, has green fuzzy fur/hair all over its head, arms, and legs. It comes with a Christmas outfit and a baby blanket, so it’s ready for its spot in your household – one I’m positive it will occupy for years to come.

You can request a doll to be made and shipped to you in around 3 weeks, and you’ll get to choose its outfit in that case, as well.

One sort of looks like something Santa would wear, and one is a candy-can striped pajamas and a matching hat – you know, the sort of thing your kiddos refuse to wear for you any more!

I don’t know about you, but this one seems like it might be worth the splurge!

10 Times Disney Movies Handled Serious Subjects in a Beautiful Way

Disney is known for its magical amusement parks and children’s movies. I myself am a BIG Disney movie fan. (I still have some of the originals on VHS tape!)

But Disney movies aren’t all singing candlesticks and beautiful princesses. Many Disney movies tackle real issues, with characters experiencing universal emotions like loss, grief, remorse, and heartbreak.

Some of these moments stick with us more than others. Grab your tissues, folks. You’re gonna need them as we revisit some of the best instances where Disney movies handled serious subjects beautifully.

1. Quasimodo is dehumanized and ridiculed because of his appearance, The Hunchback of Notre Dame:

Disney’s animated interpretation of Victor Hugo’s novel is ripe with serious subjects, but the most painful moment to sit through is the scene in which Quasimodo is attacked by a mob.

His guardian/jailer Archdeacon Claude Frollo sits by as a crowd of malicious revelers tie Quasimodo to a spinning wheel and hurtle tomatoes and the like at his face.

Only when Esmerelda steps in does this horrible assault halt.

There’s a lot going on in this moment. It shows the fleeting nature of celebrity and humanity’s capacity for cruelty, but in Esmerelda we see bravery and compassion.

2. Riley’s depression, Inside Out.

Riley and her family have just moved to a new city, away from Riley’s school, her friends on the hockey team, and pretty much everything she’s known.

Moving is a major life stressor for anyone, but especially children, who have no real control in situations like this.

In the climax of the movie, Riley is unable to feel any emotions at all. Audience members see this as Riley being in a state of depression.

Depression is another common ailment that can be hard to talk about, even more so with kids.

Inside Out provides an example of how in moments of crisis like this, reaching out to the ones you love is the best step to take for your own health and safety.

3. Jesse’s abandonment, Toy Story 2

I told you to grab tissues. Cue the Sarah McLachlan. Who could forget Jesse’s heartbreaking song, “When Somebody Loved Me,” about the child who loved, and ultimately, left her?

Abandonment is another universal experience, regardless of age, and like every difficult experience, it can be even harder for children to process.

Luckily, we see Jesse chooses to put herself out there again, despite her fear, and learn that not everyone who loves you will leave you in a box by the side of the road.

4. When Coco remembers her family, Coco

In Coco, protagonist Miguel travels to the Land of the Dead, where he uncovers lost secrets about his family’s tragic past.

In this tender, emotional ending scene, our hero Miguel bravely defy his abuelita’s wishes, and sings “Remember Me,” to his great-grandmother, who at this point is almost completely non-responsive.

Little does his family realize, this is exactly the song Coco needs to hear to remember herself and her family.

5. “Lost,” Lilo and Stitch

Lilo is a great example of a child dealing with grief. Having lost their parents in a car crash, Lilo and her sister Nani struggle to rebuild their family unit.

Stitch (who is very much an alien, not a dog) is also dealing with difficult emotions of his own. He has no parents, no family, and vocalizes that he feels, “Lost.”

Together these two navigate their anger, loneliness, and strong desire to find “ohana” by creating a new, found family.

6. Mufasa’s death, The Lion King

Few Disney deaths hit so hard as Mufasa being trampled to death in The Lion King.

Worst of all, we the audience know that his demise is not an unfortunate accident but a deliberate plot on the part of his brother, Scar.

We then see Scar convince little baby Simba that he is to blame. Not only do we see Simba processes the loss of his father, we also see him grappling with survivors guilt.

That’s a lot of one little cub to handle.

8. When Sully says goodbye to Boo, Monsters Inc.

There’s “good-bye” and then there’s “good-bye.

In this tear-jerker scene, we watch Scully give a final farewell to Boo, the little girl he’s grown to love as if she were his own.

Never has the word “Kitty” wrecked me so hard.

7. Ellie’s inability to get pregnant, Up

The story of Carl, Ellie, and their life together within the first ten minutes of Up is one of the most beautiful executions of animation and music I’ve ever seen.

We see the couple decide to try getting pregnant, prepare for a baby to arrive, and suddenly we see them receiving devastating news from a doctor.

While we can’t hear what he’s saying, the message is clear: Ellie will not be having a baby.

It is the only time I’ve seen a woman’s reproductive health addresses in a children’s movie, and for those in the audience who can relate to that moment, I’m sure it meant the world to feel seen.

9. Marlin loses almost his entire family, Finding Nemo

Another Disney/Pixar classic with a heartbreaking beginning.

After being introduced to Marlin and his clown fish family, we very quickly have to say goodbye when a predator attacks.

From this scene we see that everything can be taken from a person, in the blink of an eye, but in the face of incredible loss, we can still find a smidgen of hope to latch onto.

10. Andy says goodbye, Toy Story 3

There are plenty of moments in the Toy Story saga that have left us in tears, but Andy saying goodbye to his childhood toys is the most heart wrenching of all.

Saying goodbye and moving on to new phases in life is an essential part of growing up, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Thankfully, Pixar gave us the most satisfying goodbye imaginable.

I don’t know if these emotional moments hit me as hard when I was a kid, but as an adult they slay me. I think Disney’s ability to tackle real human emotions is one of their greatest strengths. Instead of talking down to their audience, they create relatable characters who—although they might be toys, monsters, or animals—deal with very human problems.

Which of these serious Disney moments pulls at your heart strings the most?

This Fella Is Making His Neighbors Laugh With His Creative Fence Windows for Dogs

We all have to get creative right now with how we spend our spare time because everything we used to do for fun is closed for the foreseeable future.

I’m talking about concerts, sporting events, movies, etc. It’s a shame but for now, we just have to deal with it, right?

And a guy named Brian Stanley has been doing something I consider to be very worthwhile. Much to the delight of his neighbors, Stanley started The Dog Fence, which is exactly what it sounds like, but it’s a helluva lot of fun!

Stanley makes awesome, pop-culture influenced cardboard posters for his fence that also feature holes so his dogs, Burger and Ripley, can poke their heads through and make the whole neighborhood laugh!

Every few weeks, he updates the fence and shows off his artistic abilities. And it’s really a ton of fun!

Take a look at Stanley’s handiwork. We think you’ll be very impressed.

1. The Scream!

Do you recognize this painting?

2. Hey, what the ****!

You’re about to get eaten!

3. Jurassic Bark.

Hilarious Photoshops That Are the Most Literal Things We’ve Seen Lately

Photoshop is addictive, to think we could create the perfect image, could scrub anything out or in that would make us or the image as a whole look better.

We should have learned by now, though, that any such requests given to Photoshop master Jamie Fridman would be met with extremely literal responses – they’re hilarious, and honestly, full of social commentary if you want to look below the surface!

13. Why are these creepy?

Nothing Jamie could do about that, I suppose.

12. That is one cute dog.

As long as we get to keep him in, I’m good.

11. Painfully accurate.

At least it was just in the imagination!

10. She should have defined “cool.”

7. He must be from Texas.

Or just a really big fan of Yellowstone.

6. Man, this took some skill.

I love it.

5. This is amazing.

It’s also funny, so gold star.

4. Well that was simple.

I want to see their reactions. Lol.

3. It looks like something out of a Tim Burton movie.

I mean that in a good way, obviously.

2. Notoriety comes at a price, you know.

But he probably meant VISITING a museum I guess.

1. Both of these pictures are downright hilarious.

I can’t decide which I like the best.

These actually made me think a little bit. How about you?

People Got Quarantine Tattoos and Here Are Some Good Ones

I personally don’t know why you’d get a Covid-19 tattoo, but, hey, to each their own, right?

I guess some people want to remember this unique and unsettling time in history in their own way and they’ve decided to permanently have it inked onto their bodies…

Like I said, to each their own…it’s your body and you can do whatever you like with it.

But some of these Covid-19-themed tattoos are actually pretty cool and inspirational! So let’s check them out.

Stay safe out there, be kind to each other, and remember to WEAR YOUR MASK.

A Dad Uses Photoshop To Bring His Kids’ Drawings To Life

Kids have incredible imaginations. Their minds are always working, and they definitely operate on a frequency that’s different from an adults.

They also don’t always have the best execution; their motor function isn’t the best and they genuinely don’t care if they freak the adults in the room right the heck out.

Dad Tom Curtis decided to horrify the general public by using Photoshop to bring his kids’ doodles to life, and he posts them on “Things I Have Drawn” on Instagram.

Some of these drawings by his kids – 11 and 8 – are charming and delightful, and others will make you wish your own imagination didn’t run quite so wild, but either way, you won’t regret checking this out.

11. Ahhh the elusive dog-bird.

That dog looks as terrified as any dog would to find themselves up a tree.

10. What is this nightmare.

Why did he have to make it’s head different than its body different than its wings?

9. This poor hapless dope.

I want to give him some seeds.

8. Idk what kind of pig this is.

I kind of want one, though.

View this post on Instagram

We’ve done a couple of pigs before. (So we turned this into a wild boar.) ___ Hi everyone. So, it’s true – we cheated a bit with this one. In fact, I’ve done something naughty by showing the drawing in black and white rather than the beautiful pink Ally, the artist, originally coloured it in with. That’s right, this glorious 6-legged piggy was sent to us by Megan Farwell and the talented artist is her 4-year-old daughter, Ally, but with at least two pigs on our insta already, we thought we’d turn him into a cuddly wild boar. And Megan and Ally agreed! Could he be the pig’s long-lost furry cousin perhaps? ___ #wildboar #definitelynotapig #thingsihavedrawn #thingsihavedrawnatthezoo

7. Nope. Don’t like that.

6. That looks like it belongs in a children’s book.

5. I love the birds.

And normally I hate birds.

4. Are we sure that was supposed to be a giraffe?

I know you might think that I’m having a laugh, Well I’m not – because this is an actual giraffe. __ Hello everyone. So we’re currently working on a couple of interesting new projects, but they’re taking a bit longer than I thought they would, so I’ve decided to re-share one of our earliest, but, I think, funniest animals – Dom’s giraffe. Actually it’s probably my favourite rhyme as well. We’ve not shown this exact picture on Insta before – this is the photo from our book ‘Things I Have Drawn at the Zoo’. By the way, we’ve started a new Twitter account. It’s very early days with no followers. There’s just a few of our old favourites on there so far, but eventually we might start previewing stuff on Twitter before it hits Insta. Check it out at twitter.com/thingsivedrawn if you like (it’s ‘I’ve’ because ‘I have’ was too long for the Twitter handle!) Oh – and we’re also on facebook.com/thingsihavedrawn for any older people out there. __ #thingsihavedrawnatthezoo #giraffe #kidsdrawings
