Boston Elementary School Tries Out New, 3D Crosswalk

Young students in Medford, Massachusetts, have come up with a brand new innovation for the area: 3D crosswalks. Not only do they look way cooler than regular ol’ 2D crosswalks, but they also make the intersection safer.

The 3D crosswalk is at the intersection of a parking lot and Allston Street at Brooks Elementary School, and it was two students at the school who came up with the idea. Fourth-grader Isa and fifth-grader Eric worked with their teacher and the Brooks Center for Citizenship and Social Responsibility to make it happen.

Painters added additional shaded shapes around the normal white stripes of the crosswalk, creating an optical illusion for drivers approaching the intersection. Instead of obviously lying flat on the ground, the white lines appear to be blocks on the street, which prompts drivers to slow down and pay more attention.

“It’s been really well received and there’s a lot of excitement about it,” teacher Michael Coates told The Boston Globe.

Posted by Vegamálun GÍH on Monday, September 25, 2017

Boston artist Nate Swain, well-known for his photo murals around the city, designed the crosswalk. Medford plans to install three more of the same crosswalks in the near future, also outside elementary schools.

3D crosswalks are a first for Medford, and for the Boston area in general, but they’re not a brand new concept. They’re also known as “Iceland crosswalks,” as that country started the trend. They also exist in other cities around the world, including Chicago.

Nabisco Sets Animal Crackers Free from Their Circus Cages

It’s a symbolic gesture, but an important one, nonetheless. After 116 years, the famous Barnum’s Animal Crackers have a brand new box design – and the details are important.

To refresh your memory, here’s what the old box looked like.

Now here’s the new design for the packaging.

After 116 Years, Barnum's Animal Crackers are…

Posted by I LOVE DESIGN DGO on Sunday, April 21, 2019

That’s right, the animals have been “freed” – they are no longer in cages and behind bars. A push from folks at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) helped to spark the change.

The new design shows the animals walking across the savannah with no bars, cages, or chains in sight. PETA’s people got in touch with the company back in 2016 and suggested it might be a good idea to show the animals in their natural environments.

Several companies make animal crackers, but Nabisco’s Barnum brand has been the most popular for decades. The brand was named after the legendary P.T. Barnum, and Nabisco started manufacturing the cookies in 1902. Obviously,  attitudes towards animals have changed since then.

Times have changed so much that in May 2017, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus closed business for good.

In a statement, PETA said, “The new box for Barnum’s Animals perfectly reflects that our society no longer tolerates caging and chaining exotic animals for circus shows.”

Bravo! Any progress is good these days…

15 of the Ugliest Belgian Houses You’ll Ever See

There are no shortage of things in this world that go so far down the ugly scale they begin to somehow get cuter – like the scale is actually a loop and not a straight line.

I wouldn’t have guessed that this would apply to houses, but thanks to blogger Hannes Coudenys, now I do. Belgium is notorious for its quirky buildings, and in 2012 Coudenys started an Instagram account documenting some of the weirder ones.

It’s called Ugly Belgian Houses, and even architects and architecture enthusiasts can’t get enough.

After you scroll through these 15 bizarre architectural oddities, you’re not going to be able to, either.

This Mom is Changing the Game by Shooting Portraits of Girls in Sparkly Dresses and Sports Gear

From a young age, girls are sent the message that they have to either be girly-girls or tomboys. There’s no in between and there’s no overlapping.

Well, not anymore.

Heather Mitchell runs HMP Couture Imagery in Alabama, and she shoots portraits of young girls who want to do what they want to do. Her series is called “Because you can do it all”, and it has gone viral in a big way.

Mitchell said, “My youngest daughter is 8 and she is trying softball this year for the first time. We were at practice a few weeks ago and I was talking with the other moms. I was saying that I hoped Paislee learned to love the game because she was athletic. One of the moms told me that she was not athletic, that she was a girly-girl.”

She added, “I couldn’t sleep that night. All I could think was, ‘Why does she have to choose?’ I played every sport my school offered and wore lipstick to every game. So the next day we went to the studio and created her shot.”

After posting shots of her daughter Paislee on Facebook, the requests from other moms came flooding in.

Take a look at these young ladies.

Mitchell added a final comment. “My parent taught me that I could be anything I wanted growing up. I didn’t realize till I was much older that everyone is not that blessed.”

Great stuff! Remember girls – you can do it all!

Artist Finds Her Childhood Bully Online and Shares the Results

Many of us get picked on at a young age in school by bullies and as we grow up, we never forget their name or their face.

For those who are bullied, many of the things people have said to us stay with us as we get older and torment us for years. It’s hard to completely let go of things that had such an emotional impact on you, especially as a kid. Canadian artist Meghan Lands was bullied and tormented for years–and she has constantly tried to forget her past.

Lands told Bored Panda:

“I think many of us have been either picked on or the pick-onner at some point in our lives. Growing up is tough to begin with, and in school we have to contend with this social pecking order that’s constantly reasserting or reorganizing itself.”

Lands decided to look up her bully on Facebook, all these years later, to see what she looked like now and what she was up to. Instead of sharing what she found, she decided to showcase it through a comic strip that has since gone viral on Tumblr.

Many people online could relate to Lands’ comics on a deep level. Others shared some advice.

10 Secrets Starbuck Employees Want You To Know

I. Love. Starbucks!

I know how ridiculously expensive it is to go there almost daily… but I still do it because – and I cannot overstate this enough – the coffee is AMAZING.

Running over 24,000 retail stores, Starbucks ranks high on many people’s lists of the best coffee around. But have you ever thought beyond the cup and noticed the actual people behind the magic of that espresso pour?

Here are a few behind-the-scenes secrets of how Starbucks makes their magic bean juice.

1. Green aprons have meaning

You may think the grass green aprons are tied to the branding colors of Starbucks, but that color goes a little further. Think about a hospital. You might see people in blue scrubs, green scrubs, and white coats. It often correlates to status or position. Starbucks adopted a similar technique to help their senior members stand out. According to another partner,

“Black aprons were given during a time when something called a Coffee Master program was in effect. People with those aprons worked very hard to learn everything about coffee through Starbucks. Starbucks had a program partners could receive certification through that involved lots of courses and training and coffee tastings. They’re the people to ask about types of coffee beans and teas. It’s also an indicator they’ve been with Starbucks a while because the program has been cut, at least in the U.S.”

2. Beans can be green, too

“Green Beans” are new employees of Starbucks. Those wide-eyed newbies are a part of the company-wide training program to keep turnover low. Each Green Bean is paired with a senior employee who shows them the ropes of all things coffee. This is a big job for trainers! Starbucks finds that the more dedicated and patient the senior member, the longer the retention of the new employees.

3. Don’t call them baristas

The Starbucks company refers to its people as partners. You might wonder why the professionalism of the boardroom makes an appearance at the counter. Well, the execs actually use this terminology correctly:

“We’re referred to as ‘partners’ because a year into our employment, we get a small percentage in the company, so we’re all stock partners,” says AJ, a partner in Florida.

And that’s not all. Partners receive health care and 401k benefits, and in some areas can cash in for courses at an online university. Not too shabby!

4. Funny names are, well, not funny

I’m sure the partners of Starbucks have heard every possible answer when they ask, “What’s your first name for your order?”

But when it comes to names such as Superman, Batman, and “Daddy”, the baristas don’t want to hear it. So much so, that you may never hear your fake name called – they will simply read off the drink order. Be unique, give your real name.

5. “…Where everybody knows your name.”

Hearing the Cheers theme song? I’m sure you have, when walking into your favorite Starbucks to order for your Venti, half-caff, soy Latte, not one-degree over 120. Which, of course, they are already making before you hit the counter to order. And as they ask you how your daughter’s prom went and how “Johnny” did at the basketball game, it makes you warm and fuzzy inside that they remembered. All of this is what Starbucks strives for — “customer connections.” It’s all about being genuine, and employees are actually rated on this.

6. They are not “Coffee Artists”

Coffee art is all the rage, from four-leaf clovers to simple hearts made in latte foam. Partners can make these on request, but it isn’t their forte. Because of the size and shape of their pitchers, the milk froth isn’t at spec for beautiful designs. So save the special requests for your drink, not the foam.

7. Don’t fret about drink sizes

Venti? Grande? What are these sizes? After all these years, it is still completely normal for customers to be confused. But don’t fret, the partners won’t hold it against you. They understand they have been criticized for these faux-Italian terms, and if you order a small or large, they will still get you the right size.

8. Revenge is best served decaffeinated

No partner of Starbucks would ever mess with your brew in a bad way. But it has been said that rude customers sometimes feel a little less than energized after finishing their supposedly high-octane venti. If so, they may have been subject to “decaffing.” When your attitude really annoys the barista, they may swap  your beloved caffeine with decaf.

Ouch.

 9. Dog-friendly

Starbucks is dog-friendly, at least in the drive-thru. They can provide a free puppacino to the four-legged friend in your back seat – all you need to do is ask! The only ingredient: whipped cream. A delicious treat for any dog, and it helps the employees to alleviate the temptation of petting the furry friends. For safety/health regulation reasons, they can’t touch the dogs, but they can give them a treat!

10. Employee Bean Perks!

Forget the 401k package and stock shares – bring on the FREE coffee! This may be one of the biggest perks for employees and also the biggest downfall. Whether the employees are trying new drinks or refreshing themselves = after filling orders, a new employee’s caffeine intake can skyrocket! How do they sleep at night?

“On days I don’t work, I still drink one to four cups a day or I’ll get a splitting headache,” M (a partner) says. “On days that I work, it can be the same to more, but the caffeine doesn’t help with alertness anymore. It’s lost its benefit.”

Dutch Artists Paint Giant Bookcase on Building, Featuring Every Resident’s Favorite Books

An extraordinary building stands in the Dutch city of Utrecht, made extraordinary by the mural that two Dutch artists have painted on its side.  I know what you’re thinking: plenty of buildings all over the world are painted with murals.

But this one is particularly unusual.

Jan Is De Man and Deef Feed are the talented team behind this community bookcase project. It all started when friends of Jan Is De Man asked him for a big smiley face mural for their building. But he didn’t feel that the idea, although friendly and positive, was weighty enough.

After some thought and study, inspiration for a bookshelf of residents’ literary favorites began to emerge from the building’s exterior wall.

The mural was done with the technique of trompe l’oeil, French for “deceive the eye.” In painting, using trompe l’oeil gives an object a 3-dimensional quality for added realism.

And it works – the artists’ giant bookshelf looks as if one of the novels could actually be pulled out for reading.

But what we really want to know is, who chose Playboy as a favorite book?

Posted by JanIsDeMan on Monday, March 25, 2019

Jan Is De Man invited all the residents to submit their favorite titles. Except for religious and political titles, no book was off limits.

Though large, the whole creation took one week to paint.

The neighborhood surrounding the building is a diverse one, and many people come by to take photos and end up in conversation about the mural or books or whatever is on their minds. Usually, they leave with a smile.

As for Jan Is De Man, he has other projects in the works. Follow his amazing talent on social media to see where he pops up next!

43 Giant Busts of U.S. Presidents Are Just Sitting in a Field in Virginia

Were you lucky enough to see the wonderful statues (erected in 2004) at Presidents Park in Williamsburg, Virginia? Well, consider yourself lucky – because the park closed due to lack of visitors in 2010.

Today, 43 giant busts of American Presidents sit on a farm in Virginia just waiting for someone, anyone, to figure out what to do with them. It’s too bad, because they are very impressive.

Posted by Renew the Presidents on Friday, February 2, 2018

The busts were made by David Adickes, an artist from Houston who was inspired to create the pieces after he visited Mount Rushmore. After six years on public display, the heads had to be moved after the land where the park was located was sold.

Posted by Renew the Presidents on Monday, January 18, 2016

Howard Hankins, who helped construct Presidents Park, removed the giant heads to his family farm until a decision is made about what’s next for the unique collection. Each head weighs 22,000 pounds, and they stand 18 to 20 feet tall. It took Hankins a week to lug all 43 of the statues to his property.

The Presidents in winter.

Posted by Renew the Presidents on Friday, December 8, 2017

What comes next for the statues is up in the air. A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to open a museum that will feature the artifacts, but some of the statues are falling into disrepair and need a touch-up.

As of right now, the presidential busts are held on private property, which means they are not open to the public.

Hopefully, that will change in the future…
