Funny, Fake Apps That Come in Handy While We’re Stuck at Home

I have to be honest…these apps aren’t real. I know, I know…I’m bummed about it, too.

These funny, FAKE apps are actually the work of a Swedish artist named Viktor Hertz. He calls this project “Honest Apps 2020” and they are right on target for the strange times we’re living in right now.

Can’t leave your house for the next few months? There’s an app for that!

This Instagram Account Specializes in Inspirational Signage

Everyone needs a little affirmation sometimes. Or a lot. If you’re looking for a sign, this Instagram account has got what you need. Literally. They post artfully manipulated photos of signage to read as affirmations and reminders for their 1.6 million followers.

The account (run primarily by an artist named Koreen Odiney) is called @werenotreallystrangers – which is also the name of the card game they produce. We’re Not Really Strangers, the game, is described as “a purpose driven card game and movement all about empowering meaningful connections” on their website. It’s clear this company is focused on connection and insight, and they make some pretty compelling art in that realm.

??? Do-it-yourself tea cup garden ? I used: Dried moss, single chicken&hen blossom/bud (with roots), assorted crystal points (clear quartz & amethyst), and flower potting soil. Nicki Minaj Has a Wax Statue and Nobody’s Happy About It…Except Her

Madame Tussauds is a wax museum with a main location in London and other locations in major cities elsewhere. It’s an institution that dates back to the mid 19th century, specializing in wax replicas of countless celebrities and pop culture characters.

But every once in a while, a Tussauds figure comes around that lives somewhere in the “No Thank You” region of the Uncanny Valley. For instance, twitter recently found out about their Nicki Minaj wannabe doppelganger, and they are not happy.

You know there’s something wrong right away, even if you can’t put your finger on it.

Because… hmmm….

Yeah, what’s going on here??

It quickly started getting ranked among similar sculpture missteps.

Because if Twitter is good at anything, it’s being judgey AF…

And there were a lot of takes on not just the look, but the pose itself.

Even Trevor Noah got in on the conversation:

But in all the hubbub, a couple of important details got lost…

1) The figure isn’t new, it’s been up for more than 4 years

2) Nicki has seen it, and apparently loved it

An Artist Reimagined Iconic Grammy Stars as Pokémon Trainers

The Grammys sure stirred up a lot of fashion talk this year. Buzzfeed recently reported on one artist who made a pretty big splash with their take on the style choices of industry icons, and Pokemon nerds everywhere are ecstatic.

A now infamous grid of red carpet pics started making its way around the internet, with most hot takes drawing comparisons to some sort of Suicide Squad-style lineup of comic book baddies.

But some saw more of a video game influence in the personas.

Enter Indonesian artist Ray Pratiwi, or @refrainbow as they’re known on twitter.

Ray’s imagination was sparked by the Pokemon chatter, and they decided to adapt the vibes of the performers into the franchise’s specific art style – which Ray says is not too different from their own. Twitter was in love.

A Serbian paramilitary couple celebrate the fall of the Croatian city of Vukovar. Fall from 1991. . The Battle of Vukovar was an 87-day siege of Vukovar in eastern Croatia by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), supported by various paramilitary forces from Serbia, between August and November 1991. Vukovar was defended by around 1,800 lightly armed soldiers of the Croatian National Guard (ZNG) and civilian volunteers, against as many as 36,000 JNA soldiers and Serb paramilitaries equipped with heavy armour and artillery. During the battle, shells and rockets were fired into the town at a rate of up to 12,000 a day. At the time, it was the fiercest and most protracted battle seen in Europe since 1945, and Vukovar was the first major European town to be entirely destroyed since the Second World War. When Vukovar fell on 18 November 1991, several hundred soldiers and civilians were massacred by Serb forces and at least 20,000 inhabitants were expelled. Most of Vukovar was ethnically cleansed of its non-Serb population and became part of the self-declared Republic of Serbian Krajina. Several Serb military and political officials, including Milošević, were later indicted and in some cases jailed for war crimes committed during and after the battle. The battle exhausted the JNA and proved a turning point in the Croatian war. A ceasefire was declared a few weeks later. Vukovar remained in Serb hands until 1998, when it was peacefully reintegrated into Croatia with the signing of the Erdut Agreement. It has since been rebuilt but has less than half of its pre-war population and many buildings are still scarred by the battle. Almost all of Bangladesh's 200 plus tanneries are concentrated in Hazaribagh, a densely populated, odious neighbourhood on the banks of the Buriganga River. Residents of Hazaribagh's slums complain of illnesses such as fevers, skin diseases, respiratory problems and diarrhoea. They blame the tanneries for polluting the air, water, and soil and therefore causing their afflictions.The lives of the tannery industry's estimated 20,000 workers are harsh with many dying before they turn 50. Everyday these factories discharge thousands of litres of foul-smelling liquid waste into the river. Associated Press photographer Eddie Adams was on the streets of Saigon on February 1, 1968, two days after the forces of the People’s Army of Vietnam and the Viet Cong set off the Tet offensive and swarmed into dozens of South Vietnamese cities. As Adams photographed the turmoil, he came upon Brigadier General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, chief of the national police, standing alongside ­Nguyen Van Lem, the captain of a terrorist squad who had just killed the family of one of Loan’s friends. Adams thought he was watching the interrogation of a bound prisoner. But as he looked through his viewfinder, Loan calmly raised his .38-caliber pistol and summarily fired a bullet through Lem’s head. After shooting the suspect, the general justified the suddenness of his actions by saying, “If you hesitate, if you didn’t do your duty, the men won’t follow you.” The Tet offensive raged into March. Yet while U.S. forces beat back the communists, press reports of the anarchy convinced Americans that the war was unwinnable. Teenage Brothers Spent 8 Years Recreating ‘Toy Story 3’ With Real-Life Toys

I’m not sure if Toy Story 3 is the best of the entire franchise, but I can say for sure that, as a parent, it definitely made me cry the hardest.

And let’s be honest, that bar was already pretty high.

Eight years ago, these brothers fell in love with not only the film, but with the fanciful idea that toys came to life when we weren’t looking, and a little bit with storytelling and filmmaking, too.

Mason McGrew, the younger of the brothers, told Buzzfeed…

“As soon as we saw Toy Story 3, it became our favorite film, and will forever be.

We’d always been such huge fans of Pixar and the Toy Story franchise that we eventually decided we wanted to pay tribute to the studio and film that we love so much.”

They’ve spent the intervening days and weeks re-creating the tale with their own toys, and y’all, the results are really something to behold.

The brothers used stop-motion animation to create the movie, and it looks exactly like you’d imagine it would if the toys were alive in real life, and not animated at Pixar.

Mason said that every 1 to 6 second clip could contain “more than 25 video elements.”

Morgan and Mason McGrew are from Des Moines, Iowa (please, no jokes about there being nothing better to do there!), and yes, they’ve remade the entire movie – shot for shot – with their very own toys.

They began working on it with Morgan was 15 and Mason was 12, and just finished.

Morgan is now 23 and has finished his degree in digital media/business at Buena Vista University. His brother Mason is 21 and in his final semester at the same school, soon to have the same degree under his belt.

Both of them hope to work with stop-motion animation as a career and honestly, I don’t see how anyone could turn them down!
