The Nearly Extinct Northern White Rhino Might Live on Thanks to Lab-Created Embryos

Finally, some good news!

For all the destruction and mayhem that humans have caused around the planet, sometimes we actually do some good things, too. Things like preventing (hopefully) the complete extinction of the northern white rhino.

The last male northern white rhino died in 2018, and only two females, Fatu and Najin, remain of the species. Neither of them are capable of bearing a child. It was believed that once the two females passed away, that would be the end of the northern white rhino.

But scientists recently announced they were able to extract immature eggs from the two remaining females, and the eggs were flown to a laboratory in Italy.

BREAKING NEWS – WE NOW HAVE TWO NORTHERN WHITE RHINO EMBRYOS! We are happy to announce that two northern white rhino embryos have been successfully matured and fertilised. This development marks a turning point in the race to save the northern white rhino from near extinction. The two embryos were created using eggs collected from Fatu, the youngest of the two northern white rhinos and frozen sperm from Suni a deceased northern white rhino male. The embryos are now stored in liquid nitrogen and will be transferred into a surrogate southern white rhino female in the near future. To make this procedure a reality, Fatu’s eggs were injected with Suni’s sperm while Najin’s eggs were injected with Saut’s sperm. Saut’s semen was of really poor quality and scientists had to thaw additional samples to find viable sperms for the procedure. Unfortunately, Najin’s eggs did not make it to a viable embryo despite the fact that one egg initiated segmentation. This landmark effort was achieved at Avantea Laboratories in Cremona, Italy thanks to Prof. Cesare Galli and his team. We have only gotten this far because of your unending support. The eggs were then injected with sperm from two dead male northern white rhinos. Only two of the eggs from one of the rhinos developed into viable embryos, and they were immediately frozen. Because Fatu and Najin can’t carry a pregnancy, the embryos will be transferred to a surrogate mother—a southern white rhinoceros.

With Najin and Fatu, the last two northern white rhinos, unable to carry a pregnancy, the future of the northern white rhino species solely depends on artificial reproduction. ? Over the past few years, scientists have been working very hard on perfecting a procedure for both harvesting and fertilisation in vitro. ? The successful harvest of 10 eggs from the northern white rhinos yesterday (August 22nd, 2019) means that scientists are now closer to saving the species from complete extinction. ? @amivitale ——————————————————————— @kenyawildlifeservice @tourism_wildlifeke @leibnizizw @biorescue_project @bmbf.bund @leibnizgemeinschaft @safariparkdvurkralove ? #OlPejeta #NorthernWhiteRhino #OvumPickUp #NorthernWhiteRhinoRecovery #NajinandFatu #SaveOurRhinos #OnlyTwoLeft #EndExtinction

Jan Stejskal, Director of Communication and International Projects at the zoo in the Czech Republic where Najin and Fatu were born, said:

“Five years ago it seemed like the production of a northern white rhino embryo was [an] almost unachievable goal — and today we have them. The technique for collection of eggs was developed in cooperation with many European zoos and we are happy that this unique cooperation can continue even with attempts at successful embryo transfer.”

Scientists must now transfer the embryos to a surrogate mother and track the embryos’ development into fetuses. From there, scientists still face an enormous uphill climb—the species lacks genetic diversity, and there are very few ways to get it back once there are so few individuals left. Plus, rhinos are slow developing creatures, so to rebuild the population in any meaningful way will take decades.

Sadly, the northern white rhino reached this point mainly due to poaching—they were targeted for their horns, which, though they have no medicinal properties of any sort, are highly prized in traditional Chinese medicine.

A Tiny Fish That Weighs Less Than 1 Gram Became UK’s Smallest-Ever Surgery Patient

Every being on Earth deserves a second chance at life — even a teeny-tiny fish.

This tiny molly fish weighs less than one gram. After its owners noticed a large lump on its belly, they rushed it to the veterinarian. Highscoft Vets in Bristol, U.K. diagnosed the lump as a tumor right away, and soon after, the fish became the UK’s smallest-ever surgery patient.

In the emergency procedure, vets catheterized the fish’s mouth, anesthetized it, and removed the mass. The surgery took about 40 minutes, and it cost the owners less than £100 (or about $123).

So unbelievably small

Posted by Highcroft Rabbit, Small Mammal & Exotic Vets on Friday, August 30, 2019

The vets say that the fish is the smallest patient they’ve ever worked on, as they usually operate on animals like snakes, rabbits and iguanas.

“It’s not common across the UK to bring your fish to the vets but it is here. We are seeing more and more fish which is great,” exotic species vet Sonya Miles told The Daily Mail. “It was definitely the smallest animal we’ve seen here. It barely registered on our scales.”

She added that the operation required “steady hands and good eyesight.”

The mass being removed.

Luckily, the surgery was a success. The tiny fish made a full recovery and went home the same day, with no clue that it had just made national history.

Since it’s a fish.

“The little one is now back to normal and eating well,” Highcroft Vets wrote on Facebook.

Once the mass was removed the deficit if coated in waterproof gel to protect the area.

“We’re glad to have been able to help the fish before the tumor started to upset its balance.”

This Year’s Annual Running of the Wieners Was a Huge Hit

I need to do this next year.

The Oktoberfest celebration in Cincinnati, Ohio – Oktoberfest Zinzinnati – is one of the biggest Oktoberfest celebrations outside of Germany. More than 500,000 people attend the three-day event, and around 100 of them bring their dachshunds along for the ride.

Every year, the “Running of the Wieners” kicks off the event – it’s 100 dachshunds dressed in hot dog costumes running to compete to see who’s the fastest wiener dog in the Midwest.

The dogs compete in 10 heats that all last 75 feet (or about 5 seconds) apiece. The winner of each heat advances to the final round and then runs in a final heat to determine the overall winner.

But let’s be honest – anyone who gets to see this in person is a winner.

This year Maple, a one-year-old dachshund with long hair took the crown.

Leo and Bucky placed second and third.

Maple’s owner told the local news that Maple is just one of 5 dachshunds in the family, and he learned to run fast by chasing the others around the yard.

If you head to Cincinnati next year to witness this amazing spectacle for yourself, you can also stick around and treat yourself to the World’s Largest Chicken Dance.

I honestly can’t think of a better place (outside Bavaria, of course) to spend your Oktoberfest days.

Can you?

A Scared Dog Got Rescued Right Before Being Put Down, and Her Response Was so Sweet

More of these kinds of stories, please!

Bronwnye Mirkovich was looking for a new best fur-friend when he marched into a nearby shelter. He wasn’t anticipating finding “the one” that day, but there she was, waiting for him.

The reason Mirkovich chose a shelter was to try to prevent an unadopted dog from being put down before the right owner came along. According to the Humane Society, six to eight million animals end up in shelters each year, and only half will be adopted.

Mirkovich was ready to give it a shot. He walked around the shelter checking out the animals ready to go to forever homes, when he saw a a matted, dirty, skinny Maltese mix called Edie. She was hours away from getting put down. Although she was shivering and looked as if she’d had a hard life, something about her called to him. He knew he had to bring her home.

At first, she was terrified and even defecated in the corner. She cried and growled. But Mirkovich was patient. He pulled her into his lap and petted her until she calmed. He’d already made up his mind.

When Edie figured out what Mirkovich was thinking, she jumped up and pranced. Staffers cleaned her up and got her ready to go to her new home. She had a bath, a hair cut and some shots to get her up to date.

The adoption was caught on video. By the end of it, Edie was a new, and happy, dog.

Shelter dogs make great pets. There are steps you can take to make sure you find the perfect addition for your family:

  • If you already have a dog, bring him or her to see if they are willing to be friends.
  • Follow your gut feelings about an animal rather than look for specific breeds.
  • Ask questions about health and background of any animals you think you could adopt.
  • Bring any paperwork you might need, especially your rental agreement.

Most importantly, don’t overlook your local shelters. There are so many dogs, cats and other animals needing homes. They will be forever grateful for your love and attention.

10 Pics of Dogs and Cats That Had to Wear the Cone of Shame

Now I’m upset…

This is always a sad sight. I remember when our dog Quincy had to have leg surgery, he had a cone around his head for a week or so. It was quite pathetic.

Buuuuuut, you gotta do what you gotta do so your pooch or kitty cat won’t eat the stitches in their body, and they can recover quickly.

Still, it is sad…I think we can agree on that.

A Student Taught Her Pet Rat How to Paint with His Feet—and He’s Pretty Good

The rat’s name is Darius, and he creates little masterpieces with his little feet.

Recently, he and his paintings caught the attention of Tumblr and Twitter users who thought he was both adorable and talented.

His owner and art teacher is a student of animation and digital arts herself in Askim, Norway. Amalie Markota Andersen said his posts have gone viral several times on social media.

https://mystic-ami.tumblr.com/post/169863054587/darius-painted-his-first-art-piece-today

According to Anderson on her Tumblr page, Darius created his first watercolor in January, 2018.

Insider reported she dipped his paws in non-toxic watercolors and let him walk back and forth across the paper. She estimated each of his creations took about ten minutes to finish.

She posted images of Darius and his paintings on Tumblr, but she didn’t anticipate how popular they would be. “Darius going viral was very exciting, I was so happy people liked him,” Andersen said. “It is what he deserved!”

She actually sold several of them and used the money to buy Darius a halter for when she took him outside.

Darius was adopted in 2017 and described as timid but a cuddler. Anderson never knew his real age but assumed he was mature, possibly a senior citizen.

Earlier this year, Darius passed. Though sad, Anderson was grateful for the years they did have together.

Now, her focus is on her new furry friends, male rats named Gucci and Mango.

Seems as if Mango will soon be following in Darius’ talented footsteps.
