This Funny Looking Christmas Tree Will Keep Your Pets Away from Your Ornaments

Christmas trees add a nice touch to the holiday season — until your cat or dog gets their hands on it. Pets are naturally curious about Christmas trees, and for good reason! What animal could resist a brand new tree in the middle of your living room with a bunch of bright, shiny, dangling objects that very much resemble toys?!

But you don’t have to be cursed to forever pick up ornaments off of the floor, or come home to a tree that is fully knocked over. There’s now a half-sized Christmas tree that’s perfectly designed to keep curious paws away from it. It’s called the Parasol Christmas Tree. It’s six feet tall, but only has branches at the top, so the branches and ornaments are out of most pets’ reach.

The Parasol Christmas Tree is also useful for other purposes. It’s great for families who have young kids who tend to mess with the tree. It’s also helpful for people who don’t want to crowd up a small apartment with a full-sized tree, but still want a tree with some height to it.

Yes, this tree looks… unconventional. But with the addition of a pile of presents underneath, it still manages to retain the traditional Christmas charm of a full-sized tree. Plus, it comes in multiple colors, including a snowy version.

Unfortunately, the Parasol Christmas Tree is only available in the U.K. at the moment. Our friends across the pond definitely aren’t the only ones with naughty pets, though. It’s only a matter of time before a U.S.-based company follows the trend!

In the meantime, you could always make a DIY version or buy a Christmas palm tree instead.

This Guy Made Fun of Tiny Dogs Until a Chihuahua Saved His Life. Now, He Rescues Them.

There is a certain set of people who think small dogs are dumb. Or, maybe, not very manly. My fella was once verbally harassed in a McDonald’s drive thru for having my papillon on his lap, so this is definitely real.

Luckily, my husband is confident and my dog was awesome, so whatever.

Bobby Humphreys, though, used to be one of those guys who had no time for small, girly dogs. He’s a competitive bodybuilder and hardwood floor layer, and he always had big, rough-and-tumble dogs that matched his lifestyle: Rottweilers.

He thought they were regal and imposing, and he and his wife had owned three of them during their 17-year marriage.

But then his life took an unexpected turn in 2016.

It began when his wife left him (on New Year’s Eve), and continued when he injured his shoulder a week later.

He needed surgery, but he had no one to lean on. Without his wife, he fell into a deep depression that he struggled to climb out of as he healed. Try as he might, the depression remained.

One day, his friend messaged to ask if her chihuahua, Lady, could stay with him for a little while.

Bobby didn’t really want the little dog around – he’d used to make fun of his friends who carried similar pups around for their girlfriends in the past – but he couldn’t say no to a friend who had been there for him in his tough times.

Once Lady was in the house, well…everything happened rather quickly.

Here’s a special post that absolutely warms my heart and I feel this little story needs to be told. A fan and follower of the page who just happens to be of the younger generation decided to do something completely selfless and have a fundraiser on his birthday for me. Not a fundraiser on Facebook but an actual fundraiser at his own birthday party. Between friends and family Grayson, sent in a check for $150 that he was able to raise from his party. If you look at the photos, you will see a beautiful story of his own and understand the connection. I am just completely blown away by this. Of course, I am always grateful to everybody who donates whether it be simply because it’s nice to get the magnet in return, whether it’s something that is completely from the heart and not needing anything in return, whether it’s a generous donation to the vet, something we desperately need it on the Amazon wish list, or anything. The giving of oneself it’s so beautiful and very well respected by me. It’s a trait far too seldom seen these days. This however, is on an entirely different level. Do you have somebody his age have the comprehension and awareness to do something like this and then of course have the selflessness to do it on his birthday is just light years ahead this however, is on an entirely different level. Do you have somebody his age have the comprehension and awareness to do something like this and then of course have the selflessness to do it on his birthday is just light years ahead at his age in my book. So I want to say from the bottom of my heart and I’m behalf of all of us here. All of the Littles all of the misfits. Thank you so much, Grayson! ❤❤❤❤ #myislandofmisfits #sanctuarysquad #bigguylittlesworld #bigguylittlesworldsanctuary #couldwechangetheworld

A post shared by Big Guy, Littles World (@bigguylittlesworldsanctuary) on

“Lady did not just transform my opinion, she transformed my life,” he told Bored Panda. “What didn’t she do? She gave me my self-respect and dignity back. After everything I’ve been through; humiliation shaming, abandonment, and everything else, she gave me the reassurance that I wasn’t such a bad person after all.”

She kept him going, she gave him purpose, and on the days when he didn’t want to get out of bed and go to work, her little stare made him do it, anyway.

When it was time for Lady to go back home, Bobby adopted Kira, a similar-looking chihuahua with food aggression issues. Then came Harley and Quinn, two inbred dogs that were unlikely to get adopted by anyone else.

He realized at some point that he was trying to show the dogs a kindness that society and his life had refused to show him – acceptance, no matter what.

They kept coming – bait dogs, abandoned dogs, abused dogs, hoarded dogs – and he kept them all.

“I made a promise to each and every one of them that they would never have to experience abuse, neglect, abandonment or the pain of loving someone that would not give you love in return no matter how much you tried.”

His small, unintentional mission turned into a chihuahua sanctuary called Big Guy Littles World.

Bobby takes the dogs no one wants, shows them love and kindness, and lets them live with him as long as they want.

“I call this place the island of misfit toys… Staring with myself, we are all the rejects. The ones nobody wants. The ones that don’t look perfect. The ones hat don’t fit,” he said to Bored Panda.

The dogs stay with him until – or if – they find someone they like better.

I don’t know about you, but I seem to have something in my eye. I need to go and take care of it.

And possibly find another little papillon that needs a home.

Check out These 10 Awkward Pieces of Taxidermy

You have to see Adele Morse‘s work. She’s a Welsh artist and taxidermist who lives in London, and she has a very unique take on the art of taxidermy.

Morse started studying taxidermy in 2005 and decided to become a full-time artist in 2012.

Take a look at her work, it’s pretty weird, wild, wacky, and fun!

1. Look at that shrew.

2. I kind of want one of these.

?EAT TRASH OR DIE TRYIN? BIG RACC in NY and on the set of his new video 'all bad dogs go to Heaven'. . If you can think of any more song title puns of 90s rap Raccoon songs then please feel free to make us all cringe in the comments. . . I designed and got the camo for his jacket specially printed in Germany then made a pattern and tailored/sewed up his jacket and added poppers and leather shoulders, he also has 3 watches in 3 time zones, 2 chains including his death row records piece he got when he signed his deal, handmade mini bandanna, hand painted sunglasses, gold rings, trap phone that he can actually make calls on and finally… a toothpick as it sooths his anxiety since his friend Big dog died. As always zero photoshop and no filters just beautiful Big Racc. Tallest boy I ever did and he had a lot of holes in his face and damage to his eye that I patched but I think he came out pretty pretty pretty pretty good. . . . #bigracc #raccoon #animals #taxidermy #cute #tough #deadly #rapper #sculpture #newyork #lowbrow #ukartist #meme #funny #tiktok #funnyvideos #notoriousbig #deathrowrecords

NAME SUGGESTIONS TIME? Come on then… you always nail this… SO this foxy guy is on his way to the other side of world but he doesn't have a name yet….Someone who's name begins with a J asked me to make this as a gift for one of you. So you don't know it yet but one of you has already adopted him. Which I am too excited about and am struggling not to give too many clues. So for now give me your BEST name suggestions please ❤ IF your name gets picked I will send you a postcard set. Also on a side note this is the exact face I make when I try to look normal in a photo. Every time. I Love these ❤ For sure feel like I'm going to vomit every time I see one of them whilst scrolling with tens of thousands of likes and no tags but I admit …deep down I am amazed my little fella is doing the rounds again. I didn't think I would ever get to see him or any other animal receive so much attention seven years after I made him. I always kicked myself for not joining social media when he first became a meme but now I think it was actually a good decision for the first time. I had thick skin even then but it's really overwhelming. I'm not complaining of course. I know I am lucky with or without being credited but it's a really unique and unusual experience because its like equal parts bad and good. Its like finding out you won a million pound the same day you find out you owe a million. You go through all the emotions at once and at the end of the day you are in the same position….but then happens multiple times over seven years. As long as I can avoid being the crazy fox lady sleeping under the billboard for some new stoned fox theme park that I'm not involved in then I'm good. Thank you for all helping me see stuff. It's overwhleming but it always feels nicer getting sent it by you instead of stumbling on it by mistake ❤ I wonder if grumpy cat sees a psychiatrist ? . .p.s I would happily let them cast him as Tails. . #stonedfox #sonic #sonicthehedgehog #sonicmemes #taxidermy #vomit #whatismylife #sos #thankgodforcamambert

DAY 24:CUSTOMER FEEDBACK If you have ever adopted a critter or bought something from my shop and would like to leave a review in the comments that would be nice❤ One of my favourite things is seeing photos of my animals in their new lives all over the world. From fancy rock star headshots to looking terrified next to a John Wayne Gacy Painting and they even help with meal prep. One thing that I am so happy about and grateful for is how the animals become members of the family and not just an object or somethings static on the side or the wall. I admit I was a bit unorganised with this one so here are some photos with some customer feedback. THANK YOU to everyone who trusts me to make you an animal or to send your orders out. I couldn’t do this without you, Sometimes I want to strangle some but I genuinely do love all the feedback from everyone. I screenshot everything to look at when I am stressing out so I appreciate it all even messages from people who haven’t adopted and just send me amazing DMs that always come at the right moment . @JOANNEHAWKER #MARCHMEETTHEMAKER #INDIEROLLERMMTM #taxidermy #oddities #crimemuseum #stonedfox #meme #anthropomorphic #collections #london #animals

Do Toilets Flush in Other Directions in Opposite Hemispheres?

A lot of people believe that toilets swirl in the opposite direction in opposite hemispheres. But is it actually true?

The story holds that, in the Northern Hemisphere, toilets spin counterclockwise. In the Southern Hemisphere, they spin clockwise. This is supposedly due to something called the Coriolis effect, an acceleration caused by the rotation of the Earth of the axis.

But if you’ve ever actually used a toilet on the opposite side of the planet, you’d know that these “facts” aren’t actually true at all. Toilets flush in the same direction regardless of where they are located. The only factor that affects the direction of the water’s flow is the way that the toilet is manufactured (i.e., the shape of the bowl, and whether the flush jets point to the left or the right).

However, that doesn’t mean that the Coriolis effect isn’t real. It does exist, and it affects the spin direction of every body of water, including the water in the toilet. But it’s only observable on very large scales. The amount of water in the toilet is so small that the impact of the Coriolis effect isn’t major enough to be visible.

Hurricanes, on the other hand? Their diameters are a hundred miles wide, and the Coriolis effect makes a noticeable impact on them. Hurricanes absolutely do spin in opposite directions on opposite sides of the Earth. They spin counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Toilets, on the other hand? That’s just a myth.

This Is How Your Cat’s Purr Can Literally Help Heal You

This won’t surprise cat owners in the slightest. Your cat’s purr has a real therapeutic effect, and it can even help heal you.

Cats purr for a variety of reasons. Most often, they purr out of contentment and happiness — this is the most obvious reason, easy to observe in any cat who’s happily curled up on the lap of their favorite person. But cats also purr when they are injured, frightened or hungry.

Nobody knows exactly why cats purr when they do. But given that they do so in stressful situations, it’s likely that the purring has a calming and healing effect. According to Wired, some veterinarians have even observed cats lying alongside other injured cats and purring.

It’s called “purr therapy.” (Awesome)

It seems that the healing power of purring could also extend to humans. Purring is relaxing for humans — it calms our nerves and lowers blood pressure.

Purring may even have literal, physical healing benefits. Domestic cats purr at a frequency of 26 Hz, which is within a range that promotes tissue regeneration. In humans, vibrations at this frequency can help soft tissues like muscles and tendons, and they can also heal bones and keep them strong.

All this isn’t quite as woo-woo as it sounds. Some scientists believe that cats purr to stimulate their bones so they don’t become weak while they lay around all day waiting to hunt. Similarly, vibrating plates have even been proposed to help maintain astronauts’ bone density in space.

So the next time your cat purrs on your lap, snuggle a little closer. It may be doing your body good!

Australians Have Been Eating a Fish Previously Unknown to Science

Australians already confront crazy-looking (and deadly) animals on a daily basis, so it probably never occurred to them to question a fish that tasted pretty okay and didn’t kill anyone once ingested.

They probably didn’t expect to find out, though, that literally no one had ever heard of or seen the fish before, anywhere in the world.

Well, at least not before 2000, when a fisherman sent pictures of a mystery grouper to fish expert and Queensland Museum curator Jeff Johnson. But even though he saw images of the strange fish a few more times over the years, it wasn’t until 2017 that he got his hands on a physical specimen.

He nabbed 5 of them, actually, at a Brisbane fish market, and set to work identifying the apparently yummy swimmer.

“As soon as I saw them, I thought they were probably a new species, so I purchased all five and began the hard work of formally proving they were a new species,” he said in a statement. “I’ve been told they are quite tasty.”

He and museum geneticist Dr. Jessica Worthington Wilmer worked together to confirm his suspicions, and the new species was named Epinephelus fuscomarginatus.

The new subspecies of grouper isn’t so distinctive looking that people with untrained eyes would notice it straight away, and given that most groupers are fairly generic-looking fish, it’s understandable – if slightly worrying – that no one consuming it gave it a second thought.

The Epinephelus fuscomarginatus is about 27 inches long and lives about 750 feet down along the center of the Great Barrier Reef.

This grouper, interestingly, is not the only species to recently be discovered on its way to someone’s plate. In 2011, a new species of shark was discovered in a Taiwanese fish market, and in 2018, a different shark, thought to be extinct, showed up in a market in Mumbai.

In 2010, researchers discovered a species of monkey that sneezes when it rains, but lost their specimen when the locals in Myanmar ate it.

Oops. Dinner takes precedence over science, you know. I’m not even mad.

A Creepy Fish with a Human Face Was Caught on Video in China

Fish can be called many things – slimy, weird, googly-eyed, delicious – but until now, human-like is about the last thing I would use to describe them.

If I had been the person to see this fish in the flesh – er, scales – I honestly am not sure that I would ever recover.

The video was captured at a freshwater lake in southwestern China, and the fish is believed to be from the species Cyprinus carpino (a carp). They come in a variety of colors ranging from olive to silver (in the wild), and in captivity, can sport any number of colors and patterns (like koi fish). And apparently, some of those patterns may involve black outlines that resemble a human face.

The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (and other fish experts) says the human tendency to anthropomorphize animals (see human characteristics where there aren’t any) is responsible for the fact that the fish seems to have a face. But if you look closely, you can see that it actually has does not have one.

At least, not a human face.

Scientists believe that humans anthropomorphize animals as a way to enhance our ability to read cues, body language, and other behaviors that have aided in our survival as a species. The ability is “supported by a set of cognitive mechanisms that are both an automatic response to any human-like behavior and reflective,” like thinking your dog is hungry when he sits in front of his food dish.

Though a similar video was debunked by Snopes (after amassing over 9 million views) earlier in 2019, so far, the jury on this slimy little fellow is still out.

Here’s the video – you decide!

I don’t know what I think – except that I’m probably not visiting China any time soon.

What about you?

It’s predicted to be a loooooong, cold, crazy winter from late 2019 into the early months of 2020.

This article ranks all 50 states in terms of how bad, or, let’s just go ahead and say miserable, their winters are. These rankings come from Thrillist and take into account temperatures, weather patterns, how bad the roads are during the winter, and even the success of each state’s winter sports teams.

Let’s take a look at the rankings, starting with the least miserable. Number 50 probably won’t be a huge surprise….
