Killing a House Centipede is NOT a Good Idea

You’re gonna want to pay attention to this.

Countless house centipedes have met their fates at the receiving end of a rolled-up magazine, a cup, or a shoe.

But they’re getting a bum rap.

While they’re indeed creepy and crawly, and they’ve certainly sent the heartiest of us out a room screaming, they’re good to have around. If you can get past your squeamishness, it’s best to let them live.

Centipedes are on a constant search for their next meal. They dine on mostly unseen and more problematic insects, including silverfish, termites, moths, flies, and cockroaches.

House centipedes can have anywhere from 15 to 177 pairs of legs, depending on the species. They use them to stun and capture prey with a technique called “lassoing.” With the pair closest to their head, they poison their victims with venom and wrap themselves around the dying insect for a satisfying meal. This bug is also one of the few that doesn’t have a nest or web and isn’t problematic in terms of disease or destruction to your home.

If you can’t live with house centipedes, the best defense is a good offense.

Start by getting rid of their food. This means reducing moisture with a fan or dehumidifier, sealing off cracks where pests are prone to settle and lay eggs, and keeping trash indoors to a minimum.

Sure, the occasional centipede will still find his way in, no matter what you do. Just resist the urge to whack one out clean out of existence. You’ll reap the benefits of fewer pests and walk away with improved karma.

Let’s Take a Look at the Infamous Exploding Whale Incident of 1970

When kids are in high school, many of them think history class is the worst. One of the reasons for this, I’m sure, is that the worst teachers gravitate to that subject, but listen.

If teachers taught the parts of history that are actually interesting, I’m convinced it would magically turn into everyone’s favorite subject.

So, if you’ve never heard of the exploding whale incident of 1970, prepare to be amazed.

It’s been nearly 50 years since someone thought “hey, dynamite seems like a good way to get this dead whale off the beach,” and now a beautiful park on the Oregon coast has been dubbed “Exploding Whale Memorial Park.”

That whale may not have died well, but at least he’s being remembered, eh?

It was November of 1970 when an 8-ton sperm whale beached itself. It had already expired when it was found, and the case was turned over to the Oregon highway division. The Navy advised them to blow the whale up, aiming it toward the ocean, where plenty of smaller animals would be delighted at the already-cooked meal.

They set to figuring out how much dynamite might be required to accomplish such a grisly feat, and, well…in the end, I think they probably wished they’d consulted a few experts.

Like businessman Walt Umenhofer, perhaps, who was trained in using explosives during World War II. He happened to be driving near the scene at the time (in his brand-new car), and told the highway division he didn’t believe they’d gotten their calculations right. They’d stuck about 20 crates under the carcass, and he advised them to go with a lot fewer maybe 20 sticks) if they wanted to push it out to sea – or a heck of a lot more if they wanted to vaporize the entire thing.

Project manager George Thornton waved him off, telling reporters “well, I’m confident that it’ll work, the only thing is we’re not sure how much explosives it’ll take to disintegrate this thing.”

The answer was more than they had, because when the whale exploded, massive pieces of blubber flew everywhere – onto buildings, cars in parking lots, and people suddenly caught in an unexpected and gory blubberstorm.

One journalist, Paul Linnman, said at the time that “explosions in the movies usually look like a blast of fire and smoke. This one more resembled a mighty burst of tomato juice.

Poor Walt Umenhofer, who I assume was too disgusted to muster an “I told you so,” watched his car get smothered in whale debris. It caved in the roof and he required a shovel to remove all of the parts.

“My insurance company’s never going to believe this,” he said afterward.

The project manager refused to admit any mistake, saying that an unknown hole under the whale was what caused gawkers to be sprayed in whale innards.

Basically, you can see why this incident would grab kid’s attention in schools – perhaps part of a math lesson, even, about how to calculate force needed per ton or something? I’m not a math person, but I guarantee this story would have caught my attention.

For now, though, I applaud the people of Oregon for realizing there was never really any other name for this beach.

Live in infamy, giant sperm whale. You’ve given us more than we’ve deserved.

A String Quartet Performed for 2,300 House Plants Because That’s What Our World Is Now

If you’re a performer of any kind, then you know that one of the best things in the world is your audience. People are tough – they whisper, they shift, they crinkle their programs, they have to go to the bathroom…

Plants, though, are completely quiet and attentive for an entire performance, no matter how long it goes on.

A fact this string quartet surely appreciated after they put on a performance for an audience of 2300 house plants. They performed UceLi Quartet’s rendition of Giacomo Puccini’s Cristantemi (Chrysanthemum) at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

The pictures are as bizarre as they are beautiful.

The theater hasn’t held any performances since March, so artist Eugenio Ampudia was able to implement his idea for a Concert pel Bioce (Concert for the Biocene), inspired by how his thoughts about nature have been impacted by the pandemic.

The plants were afterward gifted to the frontline workers at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona.

The artist spoke with the Associated Press about his inspiration for the idea:

“I heard many more birds singing, and the plants in my garden and outside growing faster. A

nd, without a doubt, I thought that maybe I could now relate in a much more intimate way with people and nature.”

The performance can now be viewed online, and even though you might be tempted to laugh at the audience of greenery, the fact is that there’s evidence that plants enjoy music quite a lot.

In 1962, botanist T.C. Singh believed his plants benefitted from a growth spurt after hearing classical music, and the idea has been explored by countless children in science fairs ever since.

The type of music does seem to matter, as subsequent papers have claimed rock music like Zeppelin and Hendrix actually causes plants to wilt, and there are whole Soundcloud videos dedicated to music for plants.

A 2014 study tried to establish how and why plants might benefit from certain types of music, positing that waves of varying intensities could impact cell growth – plants like lettuce, spinach, cotton, and rice grew between 5 and 20% more while in the presence of music.

Word is out on how the plants that enjoyed this performance reacted, but we all liked it, and I’m sure the hospital workers are happy to have their days brightened by fresh greenery.

There’s something otherworldly about seeing these plants in the seats where humans once sat (and will hopefully one day sit again).

These People Can Make “Leather” Out of Cactus Leaves to Help Save the Environment

If scientists all over the world are to be believed, the environment is tanking in a hurry. The bad news is that the majority of international leadership doesn’t seem to be able to hear the alarm bells, but the good news is there are citizens everywhere are stepping up in myriad ways to solve different sets of problems.

One of many issues that’s leading to trouble with our planet is the stress that so many herd cattle put on our resources, and the amounts of methane their poop releases into the atmosphere. Those are just two of the reasons vegans prefer not to eat beef or buy things – like leather – that are also by-products of raising cattle for slaughter.

Two entrepreneurs from Mexico, Adrián López Velarde and his friend, Marte Cázarez, came together from separate industries to solve the problem of leather production…with cacti.

The friends left their jobs in fashion and furniture automotive to dedicate a few years to come up with the idea and the process for transforming cacti into usable vegan leather. It took two whole years before they came out with something they felt was marketable in 2019.

Cacti are a good choice because they don’t put much strain on the environment – they don’t require much water to grow and can thrive in a wide range of temperatures. They’re also very prevalent in Mexico, where the two live.

They call their vegan leather “Desserto,” and it’s the first environmentally friendly organic material made from the Nopal cactus. It’s highly sustainable and doesn’t contain any toxic chemicals, comes in a wide variety of colors, thicknesses, textures, and honestly looks and feels like the real thing.

The cactus “leather” is made by cutting mature leaves from the plants before cleaning, mashing, and drying them under the sun for three days. Then the material is processed into their patented (and secret!) formula.

Anything that’s normally made from cow leather can be made from Desserto. It’s elastic, breathable, highly customizable, and honestly, I don’t see one single reason this can’t take the place of cow’s leather completely in the future.

If you’ve got an idea on how to help save the environment, one issue at a time, follow in Adrián and Marte’s footsteps, will you?

Because it’s looking more and more like the citizens of the world are going to have to save the planet ourselves.

Someone Has Reportedly Found Forrest Fenn’s $2 Million Rocky Mountain Treasure

People love searching for treasures. Pirates fascinate us (even though they mostly didn’t bury their treasures), metal detectors can always be found on beaches around the world, children love to go on treasure hunts…

So it’s no surprise that, in the decade since writer and artifact’s dealer Forrest Fenn hid a treasure in the Rocky Mountains, people have been poring over his book that contains the poem he promised would lead them to the metaphorical ‘X’ over the spot.

The cryptic, 24-line poem was published in Fenn’s memoirThe Thrill of the Chase. It alluded to a canyon and “home of the Brown,” and included a warning that there will “be no paddle up your creek…just heavy loads and water high.”

An estimated 350,000 people have gone out to the Rocky Mountains with the express purpose of hunting the treasure, according to The Washington Post, and their searches have not been without controversy. At least five people have lost their lives in pursuit, and others have been charged with damaging the environment or cultural artifacts accidentally.

The deaths, along with a lengthy list of safety concerns, led New Mexico State Police Chief Pete Kassetas to ask the treasure be retrieved by its owner in 2017.

“He’s putting lives at risk,” he said in a statement to The Associated Press at the time.

When Fenn hid the treasure, it took two separate trips, seeing as it weighs an estimated 42 pounds. Now, he’s reporting that it’s been found on June 6th by a man from “back East” who prefers to remain anonymous for the time being.

He’s also not confirming quite yet the location of the treasure, saying only that “it was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago. I do not know the person who found it, but the poem in my book led him to the precise spot.”

Fenn says he confirmed the discovery was legitimate using pictures sent by the man, though no outside source has seen them, the treasure, or officially confirmed.

Still, it seems the search is over – for this treasure, anyway.

“I congratulate the thousands of people who participated in the search and hope they will continue to be drawn by the promise of other discoveries. So, the search is over. Look for more information and photos in the coming days.”

And remember, the beauty of nature is there to be explored all of the time, and it contains treasures that you don’t have to dig up, or get in trouble, to find.

A Very Rare White Grizzly Bear Was Spotted in Canada Recently

Grizzly bears are a sight under even normal circumstances. But a very special bear in Canada is drawing even more attention than usual for these furry creatures.

His name is Nakoda and he’s totally white.

Biologists say that white grizzly bears are incredibly rare, as this species typically has fur ranging in color from very dark brown to light tan. But their fur typically doesn’t go any lighter than that, except for Nakoda, of course. He was first spotted in 2017 but is gaining popularity recently, thanks to some new photos surfacing on social media. He’s been spotted most recently in Banff National Park, where park officials have watched him grow up since he was a cub.

And nope, he’s definitely a grizzly bear, not a polar bear in the wrong part of the world.

Meet 'Nakoda' the White Grizzly! After going through hundreds of submissions and tallying up the votes, The number one…

Posted by Bow Valley Network on Thursday, May 21, 2020

He was even spotted on video hanging out with a darker-colored bear friend, digging around in the snow.

It’s not totally clear whether this bear is male or female, but experts suspect s/he is about three years old. Wildlife officials are worried that the bear’s rare white fur will cause people to seek him out, which could make it more difficult for the bear to move around freely. Worse, it could lead to human-bear conflicts.

Hopefully, people will be respectful of this majestic and wild animal, giving him plenty of space to thrive and roam.

Have you had any epic wildlife sightings while traveling? We’d love to hear from you!

Moose and Her Babies Spent the Day Lounging in a Man’s Backyard

If you love nature, then you probably get pretty hyped up when an unusual bird makes a stop at your backyard feeder. But imagine just how stoked you would be to find a moose and her calves hanging out in your backyard — that’s a seriously next-level nature experience.

One man in Alaska enjoyed exactly that scenario when a mother moose and her two babies spent the day lounging around in his yard.

Just look how relaxed they are!

They even tried sampling the patio furniture:

Hmm. On second thought, these bushes taste way better:

This moose encounter is just so darn cute, but it’s also important to remember that animal mothers can be very protective of their young. If they feel threatened, they will not hesitate to protect their babies in whatever way necessary. This man appears to have done the right thing by staying indoors and just snapping some photos. It’s best to leave wildlife alone, generally speaking.

Have you ever had a backyard wildlife encounter that blew your mind? We’d love to hear from you!
