This Company Finally Made Shoes for Kids with Special Needs

A company and their unique and easy-to-use design have gone viral after a special needs’ mom found them for her daughter and posted about them on Facebook. If you or someone you love has a disability that makes dressing and/or finding fashionable clothing or footwear a challenge, you’re going to love these new adaptable shoes from Billy Footwear.

Nicole Goodwin-Hubert writes that she’s so excited about the shoes she found for her daughter, Laura, asking, “Where have these shoes been all my life?” and telling other mamas that they are “unbelievably easy to get on over braces,” and they’re “so cute, too.”

The shoes incorporate zippers that run along the sides of the shoe and around the toe into their design, allowing the entire top to come loose and fold over. That means the person wearing them can place their foot directly into the shoe, without having to go through the process of wedging in their toes, then their heel.

Billy’s Footwear was founded by Darin Donaldson and Billy Price after Price was paralyzed following a fall, and making good-looking shoes that help the adaptive community has always been their priority. Their mission is to “create mainstream shoes that are functional, fashionable, and inclusive for everyone.”

It’s notable that they have tons of options when it comes to style – hi-tops, low-tops, laces, without laces – and different, fashionable fabrics and patterns to choose from. Because having a disability shouldn’t force people to sacrifice individuality and style, though it often does due to a simple lack of choices. It’s easy to see that the people at Billy are devoted to that mission, especially when it comes to kids, based on this quote from their website:

“Everybody is unique and we all want to express ourselves and feel confident.”

You can buy Billy Footwear on their website, at Zappos, Nordstroms, and at Kids Foot Locker.

Twitter Story Captures the Huge Influence of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’

The film Crazy Rich Asians has been a cultural phenomenon since it opened this summer.

The movie has been embraced by many Asian Americans, including Kimberly Yam, a Huffington Post editor. Yam took to Twitter to talk about her background and the evolution of her personal feelings on being an Asian American. Read her tweets to hear about her journey and to learn how the film ultimately affected her.

Crazy Rich Asians actress Constance Wu quoted the film’s director Jon M. Chu and said the film is “more than a movie — it’s a movement.” I think Kimberly Yam can attest to that.

15+ Creative Illustrations of Homophones

I have a lot of respect for anyone trying to learn English because it has more contradictions than you can imagine. The English language is confusing. Like, way too confusing.

Thankfully, each week, Bruce Worden of the blog “Homophones, Weakly” posts a new clever illustration that shows the difference between two words that sound the same but mean something completely different. Thank you Bruce, thank you.

7 Ways You Can Tell Someone Is Lying

Science and psychology have some useful tips on how you might be able to tell if the person across the table is being straight with you. There are several good reasons to be able to tell when someone is lying to you — starting and ending with it’s nice to know who you can trust.

#7. They tend to stand very still.

Though it is true that some people fidget when they get nervous, just as many people stand purposefully still. Glass explains scientists think this is because the body is preparing for a confrontation.

“If you observe a rigid, catatonic stance devoid of movement, it is often a huge warning sign that something is off.”

#6. Pointing may become a factor.

People often feel put on the defensive when they’re lying, and will attempt to turn the tables. Watch for increasingly aggressive gestures, like pointing, to emerge.

#5. They may touch or cover their mouth.

If someone doesn’t want to answer a question, they often put their hands over their mouth or lips.

“They are literally closing off communication,” says Glass.

#4. They may go overboard with information.

Glass explains that if someone is giving you too much information “that is not requested and especially an excess of details, there is a very high probability that he or she is not telling you the truth.”

“Liars often talk a lot because they are hoping that, with all their talking and seeming openness, others will believe them.”

#3. You can tell a lot from their feet.

Are they shuffling them a lot? If so, you might be spotting someone who is uncomfortable and nervous, and who would like to be anywhere but where they are.

“This is one of the key ways to detect a liar. Just look at their feet and you can tell a lot,” Glass advises.

#2. They may repeat words or phrases.

Glass says that if someone repeats words and phrases, they could be trying to convince you — and themselves — that they’re not lying. It could also be a way to buy themselves time as they reorder their thoughts around the untruth.

#1. Watch for changes in their breathing pattern.

If you’re close enough to someone to hear them breathing, if they’re lying, you might hear them start to breathe more heavily. You should also observe if their shoulders rise and/or their breathing becomes shallow.

“In essence,” Glass says, “they are out of breath because their heart rate and blood flow change.”

10+ Quick Facts About Coffee

Whether we use it to wake up in the morning, to make it through a few tough days, or can’t help but revel in the warmth and comfort of a freshly brewed mug (full of pumpkin spice creamer in the fall), there are a million reasons to brew yourself another cup. Coffee is one of those things that people either love or hate, and the majority of people in the world seem to fall into the former category.

There are probably a few things you didn’t know about everyone’s favorite pick-me-up, and there’s a good chance you’ll find two or three in the list below!

#12. Some governments have tried to ban coffee.

Can you imagine? The nerve! As recently as 1746, Sweden tried to ban coffee across the country. And surprisingly they weren’t the first  — governments saw the beverage as too likely to stimulate radical thinking.

Whelp, too late for that now, I think.

#11. The world’s most expensive coffee is sh*t. Literally.

It’s called Kopi Luwak and it’s made from coffee beans that have previously passed through the digestive system of the Asian palm civet. You can try it yourself if you can pay $600/lb.

#10. People used to eat it.

Historians think that the first African tribes to consume coffee ground the berries together, combined them with animal fat, then rolled the mixture into tiny little energy balls. I don’t know about you, but I’d be down to try that.

#9. Coffee beans once funded Brazil’s Olympic team.

The country couldn’t afford to get its athletes to Los Angeles in 1932, so they loaded their team’s ship with coffee and sold it as they sailed.

#8. The average American spends more than $1000 on coffee every year.

$1092, to be exact, and we’re far from the most caffeinated nation on the map.

#7. Where does the caffeine go?

There exists the abomination that is decaffeinated coffee, but where does the caffeine go once it’s no longer in your cuppa? Well, it turns out coffee companies sell it to soda or pharmaceutical businesses.

If you ask me, we’d all be better off just drinking it.

#6. Coffee apparently extends the feline lifespan.

Okay, there’s no actual scientific evidence for this, but the cat that holds the world record for living the longest consumed a cup every morning. Her name was Creme Puff, and she lived for 38 years. The runner up in the category, Grandpa Rex Allen, lived to a the ripe age of 34 and also enjoyed his cuppa joe every day.

#5. The CIA loves coffee, too.

They have a “Stealthy Starbucks” at Langley, and the employees have to undergo extensive background checks to land the gig. They also can’t leave their post without an escort (not even to go the bathroom? Inquiring minds want to know!).

#4. It could kill you.

I mean, you’d have to drink 70 cups (if you weighed around 150 pounds) to actually die, but too much of anything is never a good idea.

#3. Finland is the most caffeinated country in the world.

While they unfortunately can’t grow beans of their own in their climate, they consume the most coffee of any country out there.

#2. Coffee could one day fuel your car.

Researchers have had success converting coffee into biodiesel, and the best part is, used grounds work just as well.

#1. Beethoven was that lady in front of you at Starbucks who takes fifteen minutes to order and then sends it back because it’s not right.

Rumor has it that he insisted each cup be made with exactly 60 beans. Try that one out on your local barista next time and see what happens. I double dog dare you.

I think educating yourself warrants another mug, don’t you?

12+ Jokes for Book Lovers

Sleep is at a premium and while the kids are napping, I’ve got work to do, so I’ve had less and less time on my hands to relax with an awesome novel. I was an avid reader as a child – like, in the summer I would lay in my bedroom and read multiple books a day – but by the time college hit with all of its required reading, books for pleasure became a rarer thing.
