10 People Share the Bizarre Rules They’ve Encountered in Other People’s Homes

People are weird. And they’re especially weird when they’re in the comfort of their own homes. That’s when the most bizarre habits really kick in.

Have you ever experienced strange house rules? In this AskReddit installment, people confess the weirdest rules they’ve had to deal with in someone else’s house.

1. Footprints

“One of my friends mother had some borderline obsessive rules. No walking on the carpets. You must remain on the strips of clear plastic carpet protectors instead, which were arranged to create walkways round the house. Guests must wear slippers, there were spares if you didn’t bring your own. The leather sofas must remain completely covered in sheets to protect them. Even the dog was expected to follow these carpet protector paths and was constantly being told off for stepping off them.

I understand wanting to keep your carpets and furniture nice but this was crazy. You couldn’t even see them under all this ugly protective stuff. Plus I nearly fell down the stairs wearing oversized slippers and tripping on this protective plastic mat that was draped down the staircase. I was also constantly getting in trouble for not following the correct route around the room and instead walking straight to where I wanted to be. She would literally check for footprints on the carpet.”

2. Don’t sit there

“My friend David was a tough guy… which was all the more cool that he chose to hang out with a scrawny nerd like me.

We went back to his house, once (and only once)… which was literally 4 houses down the street from me.

It was a small, normal house, with a small comfortable living room.

When I plopped into the big easy chair, David went white as a ghost.

“that’s my dad’s chair.” (pause)

“no one’s allowed to sit there.” (pause)

“ever.”

“if he sees you in his chair, he’ll bring the belt.”

Well, I was a small kid, but even I knew that some other person’s parent wasn’t going to be allowed to beat the shit out of ME with his belt. So I said, nonchalantly, “so what? He can’t hit me.”

My tough guy friend (and, truth be told, a bit of a bully to other kids) just got paler and paler.

Then he said (very quietly)

“he might not wallop you. but he’ll wallop me instead.”

I hopped off that chair like a shot.

And learned a sh*tload that day.”

3. Mother-in-law

“My MIL has some major issues.

There is a room just as you walk in the house that is completely off limits. It’s vacuumed constantly and is a picturesque pink frilly sitting room, pink carpets, etc. Think Dolores Umbrage. My parents brought their dog over once (who is a fantastic chill dog) and she put a paw on the carpet and my MIL almost had an aneurysm.
When my husband was growing up, he and his 2 brothers had 1 hour of screen time a day. TV, video games, whatever, 1 hour.
1 bath a week. If you had more than that you got screamed at. The brothers would end up showering at a friend’s house. I had to basically train my husband out of that one.
If you had too much fun doing something, they wouldn’t let you do it anymore. It made my husband very good at lying and also very obsessive about things he enjoyed. Or, if you had too much fun in a weekend you weren’t allowed to do something fun later in the weekend. I.e. visiting a friend’s house on Saturday, weren’t allowed to do anything on Sunday except clean or do yard work.
Not allowed to argue with parents. Mom has a personality disorder and constantly lies. Dad always backs her up. She will lie about what the boys were doing and say they were breaking a rule when they weren’t and they couldn’t argue. (This rule is literally pinned to their wall)
They have to get the parents cards for birthdays etc. But the cards are not allowed to be hand made because it’s “cheap.” This rule persists.
Have to take pictures every Sunday before going to church, in the church outfits. There are hundreds of pictures of this, in the same spot in the house.
There are other rules I literally can’t remember/pick out of the piles of abuse.

My husband and his brothers have grown up very well adjusted and sane based on this mess.”

4. On the stairs

“Had a babysitter when I was about 8 and my sister was 5. The rule was all day we had to sit on the stairs. No couch, no kitchen table, nothing literally had to stay on the stairs the whole day (which was pretty f*cking uncomfortable even to my 8 year old body) and me and my sister were pretty well behaved so we did it without much question. When my mom would come pick us up and started talking for what seemed like forever, of course, we would get to sit on the couch. only years later did I realize how weird and sh*tty that was.”

5. Locked in the garage

“She wouldn’t actually let us into the house.

She threw a housewarming party and we were all excited about attending, but instead she herded us all into her garage and locked us in there. There was a door in the garage that led into the kitchen that she would only unlock if someone wanted the bathroom. She would then escort the person to the toilet and stand outside the door until they were done, take them back to the garage and lock the door again. The garage was empty as well. Not even so much as a deck chair or box to sit on.

The guests did not stay long. I left in under an hour and the rest not long after. She was offended after she put so much “effort” into having us over.”

6. The correct order

“My grandparents had a very specific order that food should be eaten. We’re a big English family and tea would be served at 5pm or so, after lunch at 1pm. Plates and dishes would be placed on the dining room table all at once, but, could only be consumed in the correct order. Sandwiches first, then sausage rolls/assorted savouries, then sweet foods.

It’s only so strange, because after my generation (16 of us) my grandmother now couldn’t give less of a shit, and all the rules are out of the window, especially for great grandchildren and our spouses. We’re just pretty bitter that we would get such a telling off for eating a sausage roll before a sandwich, since now apparently you can have chocolate biscuits before 2pm. Anarchy.”

7. Double-take

“So a few years back I was at a party and they home owner had a list of house rules on a chalk board. The one that sort of made me double take was “Overnight guests are asked not to masturbate.”

I was a little confused, I mean nobody wants to think of someone else jerking it in their home, in their sheets, but that seems a little weird. Was there an incident that incited this?”

8. Them’s the rules

“I was in a foster home from ages 5 to 7. They were religious and the rules were as follows: women couldn’t cut their hair, wear short sleeves after 5 years of age, could only wear dresses and nightgowns (even when swimming on vacation), and nobody could enter the home if wearing shorts. Pants were fine. The upside was the whole family ate dinner together every night and there was always dessert.

As a kid coming from a home where food was not aplenty, I thought it was wonderful. I’ve stayed in touch over the years and went to the moms 80th birthday party last summer. Lots of people were there in shorts, so the rules have obviously been relaxed over the years. One daughter even had hair a little below her shoulders, so that rule isn’t enforced, either.”

9. Priorities

“I’m a medic, so we go into people’s homes every day. We had a cardiac arrest, so we were working a man, and the wife was having a fit about the mess we were making.

Yes, there was some garbage from the pads, needles, meds, but we put all of it into our jump bag.

She was screaming at us about it. I told her that her husband was very sick and we were doing everything we could to help. She said she didn’t care if he died as long as we didn’t make a mess.”

10. Knock knock

“Anytime I was over at their house and we would go outside and play, I would have to knock on the door each time to come back in, even if I had been there for a while or if I had just walked in with their kid.

Their mother kept tabs on exactly how much I ate or drank while I was there and expected me to work for whatever they had given me.

I had accidentally left something by the door and I realized after I got a few steps away from their porch so I just opened the door and reached in to grab it. Her mother grabbed my arm and jerked me back into the house and screamed how I was a guest at their house and that I was to always knock before entering, how I was a rude child, she didn’t care that I was just there and what I grabbed was mine etc. I had known this woman my entire life. We lived in the same neighborhood, she knew all of my extended family and treated me like I was some stranger.

That was my last day playing over there.”

Teacher Shows the Difference Between Equity and Equality to Second Graders with Band-Aids

The words ‘equity’ and ‘equality’ are social concepts can be hard to understand, even for adults who technically understand what words mean and why they are different. The first means everyone is given the accommodation they need to be on the same level as their peers while the second means giving everyone the exact same thing.

The Tumblr post below illustrates the difference through images:

It all began with this post.

It might seem to you that the concept is too big and unwieldy to teach kids, but I guess that’s why people like Tumblr user aloneindarknes7 are teachers and the rest of us aren’t. And, how and why would you explain this to a classroom full of 8-year-old children?

Her post, which originally appeared on Citizenship and Social Justice, a blog that “tracks primarily issues of class, race, gender, education, and activism,” spells out how she tackles this issue with her students.

Aloneindarknes7 has been a teacher for three years and says she learned the technique from another teacher, and that they both enjoy figuring out how to impart big social concepts to eager young minds. The post below should even help a few adults grasp the concept, too!

The Internet is loving this, and it seems like other teachers might be tackling it using a box of Band-Aids themselves!

12+ People Share the Most Romantic Gestures Ever Made for Them

For me, it was a college boyfriend who cleaned up my entire station at the restaurant so we could go home together instead of me being an hour behind. Romantic gestures mean different things to different people, so the people who know and love us best are often the only ones who can really knock it out of the park.

These 15 people have some seriously romantic people in their lives who aren’t afraid to show how they feel – and there’s no way to put a price on that! Here is what made them SWOON!

#15. She was a keeper.

“My SO looked after my nieces with me for 2 years. We’d been together 6 months, at that point.

I knew she was a keeper. 15 years later and we’re still together.”

#14. A lucky guy.

“One birthday, early on in our relationship,my girlfriend came over the night before my birthday, right at midnight to take me out. We had a picnic by the lake, and she made all the food herself. Still makes me smile thinking about it. Another time, she threw me a surprise party, and I never had one before, so that meant a lot as well. I really am a lucky guy.”

#13. Giggles like a child.

“Me and my SO work together and we try to keep our relationship hidden (of course almost everyone knows it, but they respect our decision). Sometimes when we are alone, even if it is only for 5 seconds, she surprise-hugs me when I least expect it and giggles like a child, knowing that I can’t return the favour. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but I love these small gesture and for me, these are the most romantic things, she can do.”

#12. She just let me ramble on.

“Maybe this isn’t the most romantic thing but it was incredibly sweet and I think of it often,

I often get distracted working on projects in room and sometimes I can forget to stop and make sure I give my girlfriend the undivided attention she deserves, but the other day she just let me ramble on about what I was doing and how I should make her something and how I was getting some new tools, and I turned to her smiling and said “one day I’m gonna have such a nice workshop!”

The way she was looking at me and smiling, I don’t know, I just kinda realized she doesn’t really care about the new tools I’m getting, or if I make her something, but she really cared about how happy thinking about that stuff made me and she was gleaming with just how happy it made me to think about my furture workshop, even if it’s so off in the furture she never gets to see it. I guess her letting me ramble and seeing how she looked at me when I wasn’t paying attention made me feel really nice and cared about.”

#11. What a mastermind!

“My GF at the time (soon to be wife) made me the best 30th birthday gift ever. You know how ppl alianate from their friends with age, especially when working 8-10 hours in corporate. Connections get shallow etc. At some point I was feeling I don’t have any real friends anymore. So she managed to prepare an old school, hard cover custom made album where all my friends since high school had written (by hand) a BD wish and attached a real hard copy picture (prefacebook editions). This thing had like 30 more pages. It had been traveling Bulgaria (where I am from) for months. She had to contact ppl she hasn’t ever met before and ask them to participate. She made Ppl that are living abroad to take a picture of the hand written wish so she can print it and keep the style of the “book”. It is scary what mastermind she can be when motivated ? She is so amazing!!!”

#10. It made me blush.

“My girlfriend travels for work. This year she was gone on my birthday. To make sure I didn’t feel forgotten, she had her parents prepare a surprise. I foolishly didn’t request the day off so I was at work when her dad arrived carrying two baskets and a bunch of balloons. At her request, her parents got me lunch, snacks, and even brought cookies for my coworkers. It was a lovely birthday surprise, even if it made me blush a little.”

#9. A bouquet of sausage.

“My wife gave me a bouquet of sausage for my birthday.”

#8. Just a movie.

“It had been my birthday a couple of days before and we got together with a couple of friends to watch a movie at her house or at least my naive self thought it was just for a movie. They all left in the middle of the movie to do something in the kitchen. A couple of minutes go by and they’re still there. Im wondering whats taking them so long. I look over and she’s carrying a cake for me. It really meant a lot to me since I’ve never had friends that cared enough to get a cake for me before that.”

#7. 365 notes.

“I left for a year to work on a fishing vessel, my gf made me a jar with 365 notes with little memories and messages to me in it to open everyday while I’m away. About 7 months in now and we’re not together anymore lol. Was very sweet regardless.”

#6. Random and unexpected.

“When I was young, I was a huge Dr. Seuss fan. When my brother and his wife had a kid, I wanted to buy my new nephew my favorite Dr. Seuss book Fox in Socks. I ordered it, and when it arrived my fairly new girlfriend and I read it together on the couch. It was a very cute and innocent night together. Fast forward to our one year anniversary: she painted me a picture of tweetle beetles battling in a bottle with a paddle on a poodle eating noodles – my favorite part of my favorite Dr. Seuss book that we read together when we first started dating. Such a random and unexpected gift, but one of the sweetest most memorable things anyone has ever done for me.”

#5. The smallest gestures.

“To me the small gestures are the most romantic. One night I was over at her parent’s place late after work and I was very tired and very hungry (got off at midnight) and she made me a grilled cheese but kept returning to the couch to scratch my back while it cooked. It came out a little bit burnt on one side but it was the best grilled cheese i’ve ever had.”

#4. On my face.

“Ran into a friend I had not seen in months and was going through some personal shit, so we went to a pub and I/we drank a a stupid glorious amount of beer. Realized it was near midnight and I missed dinner so while staggering home I was texting my fiance for food or “I will die”. Got home and immediately crashed on the bed, and because I was too drunk to move my arms she left a sandwich on my face.

It was amazing. I love her so much.”

#3. A note on the counter.

“My exgirlfriend left me a note on the counter for me when I woke up to tell me how amazing I was. She said how much she loved me and how much I meant to her. That was when we were dating of course.”

#2. Drink it quick.

“I’m a big baseball fan. Had tickets to a playoff game a few years back, but the week before found out that I had to go away for some work retreat thing that was originally optional, so I sold the tickets online. Made a little profit but I didn’t care, I wanted to eat a hot dog and drink an overpriced beer with my girlfriend at a baseball game. Anyway, a few days before the work trip, of course they canceled it for our specific department because of funding or something or other, I don’t really remember because I was so angry. My girlfriend was texting me all day at work to see what we wanted to do that night, which I thought was weird because she kept asking over and over, and I told her I just wanted to stay home and sadly watch the game I missed on TV. Got home, she hands me a cold beer and says, “Drink it quick, we’re leaving in five minutes for the game.” Same-day scalped tickets were expensive, but she did it anyway, because she knew how much it meant to me. My team lost, but it was one of the moments that I realized I truly loved her. It was more the gesture than the money or the game, obviously, and she didn’t even like sports. We ended up breaking up amicably about eight months later, but we still stay in contact. She’s an amazing person.”

#1. The simple act.

“The simple act of her excitedly running at me whenever I get home from work and giving me a big hug!”

The Number One Source of Trash in the Ocean is Cigarette Butts

I often picture plastic bottles when thinking about pollution in our planet’s oceans. But Business Insider recently pointed out, the number one source of trash in our oceans is cigarette butts.

Many smokers simply deposit cigarette butts on the ground when they’re done smoking for a few reasons. Most people don’t go to the effort of extinguishing their smokes, so they don’t put them in a trash can for fear of starting a fire. On top of that, public ashtrays are rarer than they once were, so they’re often difficult to find on the street.

Many cigarette filters contain a non-biodegradable type of plastic called cellulose acetate that doesn’t break down over time and instead washes into waterways. And you know all those people you see smoking on the beach? Those butts end up directly in the ocean.

It’s estimated that about 60 million cigarette butts have been removed from the ocean since the 1980s. Cigarette filters still contain many of the harmful materials that cigarettes have including arsenic, lead, and nicotine. This can have even more negative effects on marine life. It’s up to smokes to dispose of their cigarette butts in the proper manner. A company called TerraCycle will send smokers a recycling repository designed to collect ashes and filters.

8+ Kitchen Hacks To Ease Your Stress in the Kitchen

There’s bound to be few tasks in the kitchen that make you think hiring a cook might not be such a bad idea, even if you’re someone who enjoys their baking and cooking,

Check these hacks out, and thank me later for all of the extra time you’ve got on your hands!

#10. Boil eggs in the oven.

Line a muffin tin with paper cups, then put an egg in each one. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and heat the eggs for 30 minutes, then submerge them in ice water for 10 minutes. I’m definitely going to try this one!

#9. Help your greens out.

I don’t know about you, but nothing grosses me out faster than wilted greens in a salad. You can help yours stay perky longer by lining a plastic container with paper towels, tossing in DRY greens, then covering them with more paper towels. Simple and effective!

#8. Don’t watch your pot – but bring it to a boil faster.

First off, remember to use only as much water as you’ll need to do accomplish the task at – the more water, the longer it takes to boil. Second, pop the lid on the pot and let the steam help you heat the water faster. Voila!

#7. Get creative (and neater) with your pancake making.

Instead of using a million measuring cups, spoons, and bowls to get a fairly simple batch of pancakes done, try mixing everything in a gallon plastic baggie, the cutting off one corner and using it to pipe the batter. This way you can even make fun pancake shapes!

#6. Help your avocados ripen faster.

If you’re like me, you love avocados…but you have trouble getting them at just the right time. We often buy them a little too firm and then wait (and I always forget about them until they’re bad). If you want to hurry them along for a planned meal, just seal them in a paper bag for a couple of days. If you add an apple to the bag, the ethylene gas it gives off will also help the ripening process along.

#5. Rejuvenate your stale bread.

This trick doesn’t work for slices, but if you’ve got whole loves or baguettes that have gone stale, try it: Simply run the loaf under water (briefly) and then toss it in a 325 degree oven for 6-7 minutes. The steam from the evaporating water will rehydrate your bread while keeping the crust nice and crisp!

#4. Peel ginger with a spoon.

Because of the odd shapes fresh ginger root comes in, a spoon is often more effective than a peeler for getting into all those nooks and crannies.

#3. Keep your brown sugar soft.

There’s nothing more annoying than pulling out your brown sugar for a recipe and finding it hard and crumbling. You want to make sure you’re storing it in an airtight container, for starters, but you can also toss in marshmallows, bread, or slices of apple to absorb extra moisture and keep it soft and yummy even longer!

#2. Keep your grill clean with an onion.

Grills need to be scraped clean now and again, and it turns out that an onion cut in half is the perfect way to do it. Just make sure your grill is nice and hot to help loosen things up, then slide the onion half over the grill flat-side down with a fork. It’s all natural (and won’t smell half bad, either).

#1. Rescue your fresh herbs from the trash.

You’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t agree that fresh herbs are preferable to dried ones, but when it comes to waste, the former can be a bummer. If you’ve got herbs about to wither and mold in the fridge, toss them into some olive oil to make yourself an herb-infused topping.

Alternatively, you can freeze them with oil or melted butter in ice cube trays and use them in future recipes.

15 Reasons to Hug Your Left-Handed Friends

Lefties are still in the minority, so let’s take a moment to remember that being different can present some challenges. International Left-Handers Day was August 13th this year, and chances are everyone has at least one special lefty in their life that reminded them we should be celebrating. My grandpa was a lefty and took every chance he got – through words, mugs, and apparel – to remind the world that he was superior to us boring righties.

Women Share Their Terrifying Stories of Being Stalked in Public

Maybe it’s been in a bar, at the movies, or walking down the street, but every woman has likely had an experience where a random male stranger has made her uncomfortable, at the very least. At the extreme (but not uncommon) end of the spectrum are the men that have made us want to run away or send a desperate text to a friend or loved one.

Women have even come to expect this when they go about their business alone in public and yet, for men, it can be hard to comprehend how prevalent these encounters are. That’s one reason these tweets, and the women who were brave enough to share their experiences and face the backlash, are so important.

This Redditor Shows the Transformation of His DIY Home Office

If you work from home, you realize pretty quickly that a room with doors is a priceless commodity (especially if you have young kids). However, if you watch any renovation shows on television, you probably think that the only sort of floor plan anyone wants these days is a completely open one.

When DIYer Rajen Kishna and his wife learned they were expecting a baby, and therefore the office space they’d claimed from a bedroom would have to be converted, they got to work. Instead of simply shoving a couple of desks in a piece of their formal living room, the couple decided to make their own office – walls, windows, french doors, and custom desks included.

If you think that’s way too much work for you to do yourself, think again – the two of them figured it all out with the help of online design programs and YouTube and, with some help from a neighbor when extra muscle was required, put the entire thing up.

The project took about 4 months of evenings and weekends, and if you’ve got questions, check out Kishna’s Reddit thread, where he’s answered quite a few.

Check out the transformation below, from taped off space on the floor to a room with drywall, paint, and all the fixings!
