9 Spooky Halloween Events Worth Traveling For

Halloween is becoming a bigger holiday every year—Americans are expected to spend $8.4 billion on spooky loot this year alone. And though you’ll find haunted houses, parties, parades, and costume contests almost everywhere, some places go the extra mile to celebrate Halloween in extraordinary fashion. These huge celebrations are a great excuse for an autumn road trip or vacation.

1. THE LOUISVILLE JACK-O-LANTERN SPECTACULAR // LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

The city of Louisville hosts an illuminated nighttime fantasy land featuring thousands of jack-o’-lanterns. The Louisville Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is open every night through November 6, where you can enjoy a quarter-mile walking trail in Iroquois Park with 5000 pumpkins—some carved with elaborate scenes from movies or faces of celebrities, others with classic jack-o’-lantern grins—arranged in artful tableaus.

2. HALLOWEEN IN SLEEPY HOLLOW // SLEEPY HOLLOW, NEW YORK

Visit Sleepy Hollow via Facebook

What better place to celebrate Halloween than in the town Washington Irving made famous with his tale of the Headless Horseman? Sleepy Hollow celebrates the legend for tourists all year, and makes Halloween a month-long celebration. Take a tour of the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Try the haunted house known as the Horseman’s Hollow Tour, or see a performances of Irving’s Legend on October weekends. Take the Haunted Hayride through town on October 28 and 29. And there are several spooky historical events to attend in nearby Tarrytown. Find out more about the events of Halloween in Sleepy Hollow here.

3. EMMA CRAWFORD FESTIVAL // MANITOU SPRINGS, COLORADO

Manitou Springs Emma Crawford Coffin Races via Facebook

Manitou Springs, Colorado, is famous for their healing hot springs, but for 20 years now, the town has staged a festival revolving around Emma Crawford, who came to the springs to treat her tuberculosis in 1889. Crawford died two years later and was buried on top of the mountain. Legend has it that her coffin was unearthed by torrential rains and washed down the mountain in 1929. Now Crawford is the centerpiece of the town’s annual Emma Crawford Festival. On Friday, October 28, you can attend a wake for Crawford and see her laid out at Miramont Castle, with dinner included. Saturday, October 29 is the day for the annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races and Parade in downtown Manitou Springs. The festival itself ends with ghost tours Saturday evening, but on Halloween night, the town will stage a paranormal investigation ghost hunt.

4. SALEM WITCHES’ HALLOWEEN BALL // SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS

The witches and warlocks of this famed town (and all over) will come together for the annual Salem Witches’ Halloween Ball at the Hawthorne Hotel on Friday, October 28. The theme for this year is “Over the Rainbow: The Magical World of Oz.” In addition to live music, dancing, and food, you can get a psychic reading during the party, and there’s a $1000 cash prize up for grabs in the costume contest. The Witches’ Ball is one of the many activities scheduled for the Festival of the Dead in Salem this month.

5. “THE WORLD’S LARGEST HALLOWEEN PARTY!” // LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY

The Louisville Zoo throws a kid-friendly Halloween party every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night in October called “The World’s Largest Halloween Party!” And since the event is aimed at children 11 and under, it’s cheery, not eerie. Children trick-or-treat through areas of the zoo dedicated to princesses, superheroes, dinosaurs, pirates, toy land, the sea, and more. Familiar costumed characters are there to greet them with treats, and there are plenty of animals to meet. The event is a fundraiser that helps to support the Louisville Zoo year-round.

6. THE GREAT JACK O’LANTERN BLAZE // CROTON-ON-HUDSON, NEW YORK

The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze via Facebook

The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze is a walk-through event held every October in which you can see over 7000 illuminated, hand-carved jack-o’-lanterns lining the town’s Pumpkin Promenade. Pumpkins are carved, stacked, and transformed into elaborate sculptures and dioramas, each more breathtaking than the previous one. The Blaze is operating every night through Halloween, and on weekends in November. Consult the calendar and plan ahead—tickets sell out quickly.

7. WEST HOLLYWOOD HALLOWEEN CARNAVAL // HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA

Half a million people are expected to attend the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval on October 31, which the organizers describe as expected to be “a bit on the naughty side.” The street party on Santa Monica Boulevard—which is alcohol-free—will last from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., but will then continue into participating bars and venues. Music, both live and recorded, will be provided on several stages. Wear your best costume; other revelers will be going all out.

8. NORTHALSTED HALLOWEEN PARADE // CHICAGO

Chris Bentley via Flickr // CC BY-NC-ND 2.0

The 20th annual Northalsted Halloween Parade will march through Chicago on October 31. The parade—whose theme this year is the fantastic “Scream, Queen!”—begins at 7:30 p.m. at the corner of Halsted and Belmont, and for three hours, thousands of floats, performers, and costumed participants will be on hand to march through Boystown and participate in the costume contest.

9. VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARADE // NEW YORK CITY

If you’ve planned a spectacular costume and want all eyes on your look, New York’s 43rd annual Village Halloween Parade is the place to party. The parade begins at 7 p.m. on Halloween night, and it shimmies and shakes up Sixth Avenue from Canal Street. Anyone can join in the parade, but you must wear a costume (some 50,000 people participate each year). And if you want to watch the revelry from the sidewalk, you’ll get views of dancers, puppets, and 53 different bands. Better get there early to stake out a spot to see it all.

16 Adorable Halloween Costumes for Non-Traditional Pets

We’ve seen plenty of dogs and cats dressed up for Halloween, but they aren’t the only animals getting into the holiday spirit. Check out some other critters who have dressed up for the occasion, even if they don’t go door-to-door begging for candy.

3. TORTOISE STEGOSAURUS

KreaturesCreations via Etsy

A tortoise can dream of being big and scary like a stegosaurus, and can live out that dream on Halloween. Etsy shop KreaturesCreations sells all sorts of crocheted shell cozies that will turn your tortoise into a pumpkin, mushroom, or a battle tortoise.

4. BEARDED DRAGON WIZARD

If you’re going to put your bearded dragon or other beloved lizard in a Halloween costume, this would be the one to choose, if only for the opportunity to use the phrase “wizard lizard.” Quite a few pet owners have done it, as you’ll see in a gallery called “You’re a lizard, Harry” at imgur.

5. BEARDED DRAGON FLYING DRAGON

liam.plybon.3 via Instructables

A dragon should be able to fly, right? If you want to go the DIY route, you can learn to make your own wings and harness at Instructables, which will have your bearded dragon looking like something out of Game of Thrones in no time.

6. FERRET MARIO

Check out this playful ferret in a Super Mario costume. We bet he could run the course in no time at all and save Princess Peach every time.

9. HORSE SKELETON

Sandy Cramer, owner/artist at Knot Just Rope

This was a very popular Halloween costume for several years during the height of the Harry Potter craze. Young lady equestrians dressed as Hermione and did up their horses as Harry Potter himself. They wore matching Hogwarts uniforms, and oversized glasses made it clear who the horse was playing. You can see a gallery of Harry Potter horses at BuzzFeed.

11. TARANTULA WITCH

11 Fun Halloween Projects (Beyond Jack O’Lanterns) You Can Do With Your Kids

Halloween is lots of fun for kids, from decorating a pumpkin to trick-or-treating. But there are plenty of other Halloween projects you can do in between. Here are some fun family activities for children of all ages.

1. TOILET PAPER ROLL FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER

Your toddler probably isn’t old enough to know about Frankenstein, but this simple and adorable project is fun anyway. All you need are a toilet paper roll, some markers or paint, golf tees for the bolts, and a couple of googly eyes. See how it’s done at No Time For Flash Cards.

2. HALLOWEEN HAIR GEL SUNCATCHERS

These days, parents often use ziplock bags to keep fingerpaint contained. Jackie Currie at Happy Hooligans adapted that idea to create suncatchers using translucent hair gel. Kids put a little hair gel in a sandwich bag along with a couple of drops of food coloring and small Halloween or fall items, then mush it all together for mess-less mayhem (as long as the bag is properly closed). The translucent gel lets the kids clearly see the decorative additions, and the sun shines right through when the bags are taped to a window.

3. SPIDER SUCKERS

Dress up your lollipops for trick-or-treaters or a Halloween party by making them into spiders! All you need are some pipe cleaners, googly eyes, scissors, glue, and spherical sucks like Tootsiepops. Cut the pipe cleaners in half, wrap them around the lollipop stick, glue on the googly eyes, and voila: a spider! The complete instructions are available at I Heart Naptime.

4. MINIATURE MUMMY

It’s easy to make miniature mummies—just use your kids’ toys! It’s as easy as wrapping a Barbie doll or action figure in gauze (you can see the complete instructions here). The finished mummy can be attached to a wreath, or you can string several of them together to create a spooky garland.

5. EXPLODING PEEP GEYSERS

Grab some packages of ghost-shaped Peeps and a plastic bottle for this fun experiment. Cut the top off of the bottle, drop in the Peeps, and pop it in the microwave—then ask your kids what they predict what will happen to the marshmallows once you turn the microwave on. Hit start and watch the marshmallow expand right out out the bottle, like supernatural ectoplasm. The finished product is not only a mess, but a hot mess, though it’s apparently easy to clean up.

6. MUMMY DOGS

scoochmaroo via Instructables

Making yummy mummy hot dogs for dinner is simple enough for even young children: They just need to wrap hot dogs in crescent roll dough. If the wrapping is a little raggedy, it just makes the mummies spookier!

7. FLYING GHOST ROCKETS

To pull off this fun project, you’ll need clear film canisters—with spooky ghost faces drawn on in black marker—cornstarch, water, and Alka-Seltzer. Add the cornstarch and water to the canisters, mixing well; next, drop in a piece of Alka-Seltzer, pop the top of the canister on, and flip the “ghost” over to rest on the top. Stand back and watch as the ghosts go flying! You can find step-by-step instructions here.

8. HALLOWEEN BOWLING SET

Sure, this DIY bowling set is Halloween-themed, but it’s fun enough to play with year round. The six 9-inch-tall pins are cut from 4.5 feet of 1×4-inch wood. After sanding down the edges, you can decorate them as whatever spooky creature you’d like using googly eyes, construction paper, and markers. Players bowl using a bouncy ball painted to look like an eye.

9. HOMEMADE SLIME

If your kids are old enough to keep the mess in one room, make your own slime for gooey, squishy fun! Steve Spangler gives us five different recipes for slime, from the classic borax recipe to shaving cream slime, depending on how ambitious you are and what you want the finished product to be. One will glow in the dark under a blacklight, as pictured above, and one is even edible!

10. FRANKENWORMS

Gummy worms come alive in this Halloween science project. It’s the old baking soda and vinegar volcano trick, without the mess of an eruption—and they’re a great trick for any Halloween party. Cut standard gummy worms lengthwise at least four times, then drop them into a cup that contains a baking soda and water solution; let sit for 15 minutes. Then, carefully remove the worms from the baking soda solution and put them in a jar of vinegar and watch the magic happen. The reaction of baking soda with vinegar creates bubbles of carbon dioxide that will make the worms move and even float.

11. MAD SCIENCE TEST TUBE RACK

The test tubes in this rack contain water mixed with fluorescent pigments, lit by a blacklight—and, if you feel like setting up a microcontroller, you can even make them blink creepily. The instructions by John Park at Adafruit take you through building the rack (with or without wiring), mixing the potions, and controlling the lights. Your child will want to keep this as a bedroom lamp forever.

The Weird Week in Review

Tucson Fire Department via Facebook

MAN RESCUED FROM CHIMNEY

A 26-year-old man in the University area of Tucson locked himself out of his house on Sunday morning. He tried to get back in by climbing down the chimney. He almost made it, too, except that the chimney is narrower at the bottom, and he became stuck just as his feet touched the floor. A neighbor eventually heard him yelling for help, and called the fire department. The Tucson Fire Department lowered a rope and pulled the unnamed man out. He had been stuck in the chimney for four hours.

51 YEARS, 17 GIRLS, AND ONE PLAID DRESS

It all started in 1965, when Janice Parker bought a dress for her daughter Diana. She loved the dress and insisted on wearing it for her picture day in kindergarten. Her five younger sisters liked the dress, too, and they each wore it for picture day when they went to kindergarten. And so did their daughters. And then their granddaughters.

It’s held up remarkably well. Sure, there are some rips and tears, but nothing that can’t be easily fixed.

Of course, sometimes the girls would complain. The dress isn’t the definition of current style and some of them said they were teased. But, they came around and the tradition continued.

The latest girl in the family didn’t want to wear the dress, or any dress. But she did, along with pants and a baseball cap, so the tradition can continue.

MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER EATING GHOST PEPPER

The bhut jolokia, or ghost pepper, registers at 1,000,000 on the Scoville scale, making it one of the hottest peppers on earth. Eating any significant amount of the pepper can be dangerous, as we see in a case reported in The Journal of Emergency Medicine. A 47-year-old man ate a hamburger with ghost pepper puree on it “as part of a contest,” became violently ill, and was taken to a hospital. He spent 23 days there after doctors found tears in the lining of his esophagus, with food debris embedded. He underwent emergency surgery to repair his esophagus.

BEAR DRIVES INTO TREE

A bear entered a car in Grand Lake, Colorado, on Saturday, and apparently had trouble getting back out. The bear threw the transmission into neutral, and the car rolled into a tree on County Road 4651. Someone notified the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department, who came and freed the bear from the car. The incident must not have seemed all that unusual in Colorado, as the story only appeared as an item in the local police blotter.

CITY OFFICIAL REPORTED AS BURGLAR

A police officer in Brewer, Maine, was called to investigate a possible burglary at an abandoned house. Upon arriving at the address, he saw several people and prepared for a confrontation.

Assistant City Manager James Smith was showing reporter Nok-Noi Ricker and photographer Ashley Conti around a city-owned, foreclosed ranch house at 91 Longmeadow Drive at about 2:30 p.m., which triggered a report to police.

Sgt. Fred Luce drove up in a patrol car and confronted the journalists with his gun drawn, according to Ricker and Conti.

Conti said Luce yelled, “Hey, what are you doing here! Come over here!” The police officer pointed his weapon first at her, and then Ricker, in the backyard for about 10 seconds, even though they identified themselves as journalists, they said.

While the mix-up was resolved quickly, the police report of the incident differs from the accounts of the reporters, with Officer Luce saying he had his gun at “low ready,” while the reporters say he had the gun pointed directly at them. A Public Safety Officer said either response would have been appropriate for the situation.

BUS DRIVER GETS LOST ON WAY TO SCHOOL

Students in Westchester County, New York, started texting their parents when their bus driver wandered around instead of driving to their school. The students were picked up in New Rochelle to be taken to the school in Harrison, but ended up in Yonkers two hours later. The students tried to tell the driver which turn to make, but he ignored them. The bus company, First Mile Square Transportation, fired the unnamed driver for not following protocol when he became lost.

RONALD MCDONALD IS TAKING A VACATION

While some people in various parts of the U.S. are panicking over a series of creepy clown sightings, McDonalds has decided to keep their mascot Ronald McDonald out of sight for a while. While it is hard to believe that people would mistake the familiar fast food clown for a creeper, the public reputation of clowns as a whole is not particularly positive or even neutral right now.

“McDonald’s and franchisees in local markets are mindful of the current climate around clown sightings in communities,” the company said in an email statement. “And as such are being thoughtful with respect to Ronald McDonald’s participation in community events for the time being.”

McDonald’s isn’t placing an outright ban on public appearances by its red-nosed clown, a corporate spokesman said. But the company is “being thoughtful in regards to” Ronald McDonald’s appearances.

There is no word on whether the clown will be paid for his time off.

WOMAN GIVES BIRTH AT WALMART

A woman was in the checkout line at the Payson, Utah, Walmart when she began to feel stomach pains. She was in labor. She asked a store employee to call 911. While on her knees, she still insisted on paying for her purchases. The unnamed woman completed the transaction, then laid down on the floor and gave birth before the paramedics arrived. Employees were excited to tell the story, and the store is planning to buy her a supply of diapers and other baby supplies.

FLORIDA WOMAN VACUUMS GASOLINE, STARTS FIRE

An explosion at the Shuttle Car Wash in Titusville, Florida, caused $500 in damage to a vacuum cleaner, but fortunately, no one was hurt. The explosion, around 5 p.m. Monday, was captured on surveillance cameras. Apparently, the woman was trying to vacuum up gasoline that was spilled in her trunk. As the vacuum machine was burning, she got in her car and drove away, and hasn’t been seen since.

THIEVING RACCOON CAUGHT ON CAMERA

Guy Williams tried to get some video of a raccoon he spotted on the campus of Bellarmine University in Kentucky. He had been feeding the raccoon acorns and even named him Stanley. Williams set his phone down while recording video in order to get a ground-level angle. Stanley grabbed the phone with his teeth and took off running with it. The phone continued to record as the raccoon ran away, with William’s yelling “Stanley!” as he gave chase. Stanley dropped the phone, apparently convinced that it did not taste that good. You can see the video here.

CARS CRUSHED IN UNDERGROUND PARKING GARAGE

A broken 24-inch water main caused flooding in the Crayford neighborhood of southeast London in Sunday. While thousands of homes were without water service, the streets were flooded. An underground parking garage took on so much water that a floor expanded and rose several feet- far enough to crush cars against the ceiling

A number of vehicles crumpled after polystyrene insulation under the floor appeared to float or swell, forcing them into the concrete ceiling above.

Flood water rose several feet at the newly-built car park below a block of flats in Crayford, south-east London.

Residents said they had been warned if any of the cars were removed too hastily it could result in gas explosion.

No one was injured, but more than a dozen cars are thought to be affected, some badly enough to be considered totaled. Can anyone explain why a parking garage has several feet of polystyrene insulation in the floor while the ceiling is concrete? You can see a news report on the flood here.
