Cat Parents Show the Many Personalities of the Feline

My family had two cats when I was growing up, and while I don’t love cleaning the litter box, I love the way they purr. Life isn’t really suitable for a cat at the moment, but lately, I find myself wishing I had one. They’re so soft, standoffish, and adorable.

Our neighbor’s cat comes to visit us sometimes. He used to do his business in a planter in our garden. When we had to get rid of the planter (aka his toilet), he waited on the front porch for us to come home from work, just so he could give us the evil eye. I want to adopt him.

Cats are incredible.

And here are 12 posts to remind you exactly why people become cat people.

Company Turns Kids’ Doodles Into Real Plushies

When I was young, I doodled this character a lot called “Joe Zargatar.” He was basically a living guitar with arms and legs.

I even recorded an album of his music that we burned to CD using our early 2000’s state of the art PC. I loved that little guy.

If I could have turned him into a tangible toy? I would have been over the moon.

And that’s one of the services offered by a company called Budsies, which specializes in custom plushies and pillows, and it transforming the images from the minds and hands of children into full-blown playmates.

10 People Share the Worst Marriage Advice They Ever Got

It seems like when you get married, or are even thinking of getting married, people fall all over themselves to try to give you advice about it…

…especially if you didn’t ask.

And unsurprisingly, a lot of it turns out to be bad.

A ton of people chimed in after this prompt on Twitter. Let’s see what “words of wisdom” really aren’t.

10. Hard work

Isn’t this supposed to be like, an enjoyable part of my life?
Why should I expect it to be so miserable?

9. The good fight

Believe it or not there are ways to communicate that don’t involve constant quarreling.

8. Sexpectations

Believe it or not there are other things.

7. You are his

In a romantic sense, sure, in an ownership sense, nope nope nope nope nope.

6. The conversion rate

I guess it probably depends on how seriously you each take your faith.

5. Don’t get comfy

So you want me to spend the rest of my life uncomfortable?

4. You’ll always wonder

Yeah, this seems like a sad justification.

3. Happy wife, happy life

This mentality has always sort of reeked of “marriage is all about running around trying to make sure your wife isn’t angry” and painted, for me, a pretty grim picture of the idea.

2. Just kidding

Pretty absurd and insulting.

1. Hit the joint

Some couples find that keeping general finances separate saves them a lot of headaches.

So, if you want some good marriage advice, maybe just follow the opposite of all that.

What’s the worst advice you’ve ever gotten?

Here’s Proof That Someone’s Last Day on the Job Is Not the Day to Test Them

Depending on the circumstances, a person’s last day at a job can either be a time of uncertainty, or even anger, or it can be a cause to celebrate moving on to something better (even if you’re a bit sad about leaving behind the people you know).

Either way, a person who is performing their final hours of duty doesn’t have a lot of f**ks to give, y’all. There can be no consequences (of the garden variety) and so their patience for bulls*%t is probably pretty low.

This girl was on her last day as a hostess at a restaurant where people are required to wear masks as part of a corporate policy.

So it’s my last day at my most recent restaurant job. Now the restaurant I work in requires all customers wear masks when they’re not at the table. I try to explain that it comes from a corporate level and I have no say in the matter, but I end up dealing with a lot of angry people.

A large group comes in without masks. She informs them they have to wear them whenever they are not seated at their table, and a pregnant woman objects, saying she has a medical exemption.

The restaurant doesn’t recognize those, and it’s just to the table, OP explains.

I’m a host and a large party comes in. I tell the party that everyone needs to wear masks until they get to the table. A younger pregnant lady tells me she is not required because she’s pregnant and has a medical exemption. I explain that our restaurant does not recognize medical exemptions and she will be required to wear one just until she gets to the table.

The party argues and blusters, but everyone puts on their masks and heads to their meal.

On the way out, the pregnant lady asks for OPs name in a sugary, not-sweet voice.

The whole group gives me the usual snark, legal arguments, conspiracy theories etc. but eventually they all put on their masks and are seated. Well about an hour later the party is leaving. The pregnant woman comes back to the host stand. She thanks us for excellent service and asks me (in a tone that was polite but laced with contempt) what my name is.

OP happily provided her name, since she wouldn’t be working there anymore when the woman called to complain – but also, she didn’t do anything wrong.

She even spelled it out, which I have to imagine was done with relish.

Now it’s my last day at this restaurant. The next day I will be in my pajamas, sipping coffee, and working from home without a care in the world. With my mask hiding my grin, I tell her my name proudly. My IRL name is unique and very easy to misspell so I spell it out for her letter by letter and makes sure she knows it right. I’m the only one with my name in the whole restaurant. In a tone that says “I’m gonna get you in so much trouble” she says “thaaank yooou” and leaves.

Everyone laughed about the lady who didn’t want to follow the rules, and honestly, it sounds like OP is hoping to hear some followup, and it’s hard to blame her.

All my coworkers joke about it being my last day and how much trouble I’m NOT going to be in as soon as she calls and finds out I no longer work there. I’m keeping up with Yelp and google reviews to see if my name pops up but nothing yet.

People started sharing their opinions.

And they shared some interesting stories.

Even if they had a bit of an opposite situation happen to them…

I’m living a little bit vicariously because I always wished I would have an opportunity like this on a last day! Argh!

Has anything like this ever happened to you? Did you get the payoff you wanted?

The Pacific Ocean Is Getting Colder as Parts of the Earth Heat Up

We used to talk all the time about Global Warming. Then over the last few decades, the concept got rebranded as Climate Change, and with good reason.

Warming in and of itself is not necessarily concerning. It’s the dramatic fluctuations in normal weather patterns, which we experience with greater and greater frequency and severity, in addition to the overall temperature increase, that is really sounding the alarm. In fact it turns out that as some parts of the Earth are getting warmer, other parts are losing heat.

To understand this new discovery, published in Geophysical Research Letters by researchers from the University of Oslo, it may be helpful to reflect back on 3rd grade science class.

Remember how the Earth is made up of layers, with a molten magma core surrounded by the mantle?

The mantle and the core are the notable layers in this new research because it’s not just the sun that heats the surface of our planet.

It turns out, the core heats us from the inside, as well, like how a hot bowl of soup can warm you all over on a cold day.

As Popular Mechanics explains:

Over the extremely long term, this interior will continue to cool until Earth is more like Mars. The surprise in the new study is how unevenly the heat is dissipating, but the reason makes intuitive sense: Parts of Earth have been insulated by more landmass, creating something of a Thermos layer that traps heat.

To understand how it is possible for one side of the Earth to be cooling faster than the other, it helps to picture an AuthaGraph map of the world.

This more accurate representation demonstrates the unequal distribution of land and water across the Earth.

For their study, the Oslo scientists divided the Earth into an African hemisphere (mostly land) and a Pacific hemisphere (mostly water).

Then they used computers to model and analyze 400 million years of continental drift and temperature data, to understand the relative insulation of each hemisphere across time.

Just like bubbles seem to keep you and your bath water warmer for longer, land insulates better than water alone.

The seafloor is far thinner than the bulky landmass, and temperature from within Earth is “quenched” by the enormous volume of cold water that’s above it.

When you think about it that way, it all kind of makes sense.

Earth, as seen from Apollo 17

And yet, they found a bit of a contradiction.

The research shows that the Pacific hemisphere has cooled around 50 Kelvin more than the African hemisphere.
(If my math is right, that’s something like a drop of 550 degrees Fahrenheit, but please don’t quote me.)

Due to continental drift, or the Lost City of Atlantis, or who-knows-what, it looks like the Pacific side of the world was not always the cooler of the two.

Think about the Ring of Fire, the higher volcanic activity in and around the Pacific Ocean.

Lava from Kilauea on Hawaii flows into the ocean.

Image credit: Marc Szeglat via Unsplash

Popular Mechanics points out:

The Pacific’s high tectonic activity today points to a heat disparity.

The meltier the mantle, the more the plates can slide and slam together.

Maybe that’s where everything is connected and Climate Change really comes into play.

As sea levels rise, adding more water to the mix, and the ice shelf breaks off, adding more cold ice into the water, maybe that is helping the ocean cool down even faster.

That’s the fun thing about science–there’s always more to figure out.

It’s pretty fascinating though, right? Tell us what you think in the comments.

People Shared Their Injuries That Are Just Too Dumb

Our bodies are just plain weird.

I mean on the one hand they’re these fascinatingly complex machines forged by eons of adaptation and struggle and death and trial and error, and on the other hand if you look at them weird they kinda fall apart.

Check It Out! Martial Arts Classes Aren’t Just for Kids Anymore!

It can be difficult to find hobbies as an adult. In between work and taking care of our families and trying to exercise, who has time for one more thing?

That’s why so many people turn exercise into a hobby.

Whether it’s playing a pickup game with your friends, golfing on the weekends, or coaching your kid’s soccer team, it’s important to enjoy the things that keep us fit.

One potential exercise that’s often overlooked by adults is martial arts, a term that can encompass a wide variety of activities. But these classes are not just for kids with bullies. Adults can gain a great many benefits from practicing martial arts as well, which many people realize once they enroll their children.

With that in mind, here are the top 5 reasons adults should consider taking up martial arts too.

Image credit: Jason Briscoe via Unsplash

1. Stress relief

We all feel it. According to the Mental Health Foundation:

In the past year, 74% of people have felt so stressed they have been overwhelmed or unable to cope.

Caused by any number of things, from debt, the health of a loved one, housing worries, or even body image, we all feel stressed out.

Along with stress comes depression and anxiety.

Having something to focus on and getting moving in a supportive and healthy environment can do wonders for all kinds of stress.

Image credit: Richard Bustos via Unsplash

2. Community support

If the past year showed us anything, it was how important having a community can be.

Whether you needed to rely on your herd to help take care of your kids while you were working, to get you groceries when you were sick or in quarantine, or just to chat and boost you up when you were feeling down and disconnected, I bet you realized who was important in your life.

Taking martial arts classes can offer you a supportive community outside of work and home, new friends, facing challenges together, and encouraging each other in solidarity.

Image credit: Charlein Gracia via Unsplash

3. A sense of accomplishment

There’s nothing quite like setting tangible goals and meeting them to feel accomplished.

As explained by Happiness On:

Research has shown that personal goals that are congruent with your interests increase your emotional well-being.

This means that working on your goals makes you happy.

And martial arts with progressing “belt” levels, like Karate, Judo, and Taekwondo are all about setting clear, concrete goals.

Meet your goals and progress to the next level, with a fancy new belt to show off your skills.

Image credit: Soon Santos via Unsplash

4. Self esteem

Just as it feels good to make progress towards a goal, martial arts can make you feel more confident.

Whether it’s because you feel safer in your environment or because you’re more in touch with your body and its place within the world, there is something to be gained for everyone.

As Life Hacker points out:

Moreover, you’ll learn how to cultivate a sense of resilience when placed under pressure.

Training can be grueling (if you take it seriously), and you might find yourself under more physical strain than you ever have been before, but you’ll also find that you have the fortitude to keep going in the face of that exertion, and that you can stay calm amid the intensity of a sparring round.

And not only that, but the work out can help you get in great shape, too, which can also boost self esteem.

Image credit: Inna Mikitas via Pexels

5. Self defense

Okay, I saved the obvious one for last.

But we’ve all felt threatened from time to time, especially if you’re a woman who has ever walked to your car alone after dark.

Learning self defense moves, no matter your age, can go a long way to assuaging those little fears.

But knowing what to do is not always obvious, especially in a moment of panic.

The discipline and training of martial arts can help you keep a cool head, and fall back on your training in a crisis.

For a few great tips that you could learn thanks to martial arts, watch this excellent YouTube video on self defense for women, made by women:

Those are all excellent reasons to sign up for a martial arts class.

It’s an idea I’ve had kicking around in the back of my mind for awhile. Maybe it’s finally time to take the leap.

(Sorry.)

What about you? Would you consider taking a class? Tell us in the comments.

Notes Left By People Who are Doing Parenting the Right Way

In the age of texting, it may seem weird that parents would even still bother with leaving notes around. After all, if you’ve sent it right to someone’s phone, they’re definitely gonna see it, and shooting off a text certainly takes less time than, say, printing and cutting out instructions.

But then again, there’s something so much more personal and tactile about the actual note. It lets your kids know that you care, and more importantly, it gives a sense of foreboding, like they’re really there in the room with you, even if they’re not.

Watching. Judging. Expecting.

That’s why these notes from parents are the best.

Enjoy These Hilariously Passive Aggressive Exchanges That Went Viral

We all have times when we can be passive aggressive. I’m not proud of it.

I think it’s sort of a natural extension of being told all our lives that we need to be nice, or to hide our feelings, to avoid conflict at all costs. There has to be an outlet somewhere, and so the snark makes it way out as passive aggression.

Sometimes it’s an attempt to be funny, to make a point while smoothing over conflict. Other times, laughter may not be the intention, but it’s good when the rest of us can see the humor in it anyway.

Here’s a roundup of some of the best passive aggressive moments out there.

1. The bumper sticker: a reliable classic

I used to think that it would be a good idea if we could easily put scrolling messages on the front or back of our cars. You know, to tell people their gas tank is open or thank them for letting you into traffic. In retrospect, it’s probably better that we don’t.

2. People really can say a lot with their cars

It’s definitely a favored form of passive aggression. Or even just outright aggression.

View post on imgur.com

3. The bathroom sign

Not to be confused with the writing inside the stall. Those messages may or may not be passive aggressive.

4. Or this other amazing bathroom sign

We had some of these at a place that I worked.

I’m having flashbacks.

5. The office break room

I think people are at their most passive aggressive at work.

You can’t outright go at someone because you still have to work together.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Nick (@nick.cam)

6. But sometimes things just have to be said

I kind of like it when people think outside the box.

View post on imgur.com

7. Sometimes businesses take matters into their own hands

They definitely know their clientele.

8. Just remember that the customer is ALWAYS right

And they might decide to get even in the end.

9. And sometimes it’s just a matter of protecting your home turf

Whether you rent and have shared facilities or not…

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ?⚰??? (@tigereyedgal_x)

10. Homeowners can be especially tetchy

I don’t actually MIND that people turn around in my driveway so much…

But it does feel like we’re the chosen ones and I don’t understand WHY.

11. It’s hard to know how to talk to your neighbors

You just never know how they’ll react.

12. Don’t forget about spouses

I bet almost no one is as passive aggressive as a spouse. You think you’re doing a good thing by avoiding a fight…

13. Or anyway, you’re making your point

That’s definitely one way of doing it. If the other person actually CARES that the bed isn’t made.

14. Living with other people is just hard

It helps to get creative and add a touch of humor. But did they DO the dishes?

15. Hopefully you can laugh about it

Because the humor takes the sting out of the conversations we’re not having. This one is next-level though.

16. Just remember, the kids are watching and learning

They hear what you say and they see what you do, and then they repeat it and it’s hilarious.

My dad found my passive aggressive note that I wrote the toothfairy. It was better than I remembered.

These are all so amazingly passive aggressive that I almost feel sad not to work in an office with people anymore.

Did we miss any great opportunities or responses? Leave them in the comments.

Dachshunds Went Viral for “Helping” To Save the Suez Canal

I really love a good dog story.

Crusoe the Dachshund is no stranger to the camera.

A spunky little dog who, like many dachshunds, suffers from Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), he and his canine siblings, Oakley and Daphne, are internet-famous across multiple platforms, and where they recently went viral because of one of their adventures.

The three doxxies make lots of videos, which can be found under their Instagram handle @crusoe_dachshund.

The pups often play dress-up in their videos, like this one where they posed as a zebra, a lion, and a monkey for Earth Day this year:

And donned their favorite Star Wars costumes on May the 4th:

These intrepid little dachshunds just like to have a good time, whether it’s filming a makeup tutorial:

Or a mock ad for a jewelry store:

And they are no strangers to the art of the green screen!

So when that massive container ship got stuck in the Suez Canal, blocking more than 400 other vessels for several days, their fans knew just who to call to dig it out.

Originally posted on TikTok, with a slightly longer version available on YouTube, these little diggers did what dachshunds do best.

When he’s not busy posing for the camera, Crusoe also acts as the CEO for the company DoggoRamps, which was founded by his owner Ryan Beauchesne.

According to their website, the company was started when little Crusoe underwent surgery on his back in 2016.

Crusoe loves to spend time with us on the bed and couch, and I still wanted him to be able to do that without always worrying he might jump off.

So, through much trial and error and many iterations, I finally designed the original small dog bed ramp, which I used for Crusoe for a couple years before even bringing it to market.

Nowadays Crusoe is doing just fine. (He did help dig out that container ship after all. Ahem.)

And the ramp that Ryan invented for him has helped over 10,000 other dogs and their families.

How’s that for a good-boy story? Let us know what you think of Crusoe in the comments.
