Here’s What Experts Say about Eating for Comfort vs Enjoyment

If you’re anything like me, you may have a bad habit of eating your feelings. It’s actually a very common thing, but it can be seriously bad for your health if you’re not practicing moderation.

Experts agree that if we eat for comfort and it becomes a habit, we can hurt ourselves physically from overeating, while also doing emotional damage because we’re using food to avoid facing our feelings.

Karen R. Koenig, an eating psychology expert, blogger and author shared this with Huff Post about comfort food:

“A misleading misnomer if there ever was one, comfort is not something we want to keep associating with food. We want to file food in our brains under nourishment and occasional pleasure. We want to seek comfort through friends, doing kind things for ourselves and engaging in healthy activities that reduce internal distress.”

Sarah Allen, a psychologist who specializes in eating disorders has some additional advice:

“As soon as you start looking for food, stop. Think, ‘Am I hungry? Do I need food in my stomach, or is one of my triggers going off? What do I need right now?’”

But yeah, that’s good and all… but why is it so hard to NOT do those things?

Susan Albers, author and clinical psychologist, explains the underlying factors.

“When we’re stressed, our bodies are flooded in cortisol. That makes us crave sugary, fatty, salty foods.”

Cortisol is the body’s main stress hormone. It regulates how our bodies process all the macro nutrients we consume (carbs, fats, proteins), so when stress and anxiety enter our emotional equation… we carbo-load like crazy.

The experts agree that while a hormone like cortisol is a powerful trigger to comfort eat, we need to practice more mindfulness when eating. So instead of letting our mood drive consumption, we need to concentrate on meals, not snacks. Also, emotional eating usually ends up in overconsumption, which means we aren’t even tasting the food we eat. Experience a meal, savor the flavors and understand how you feel when you’re full.

One last bit of advice? Never go cold turkey. People put unrealistic expectations on themselves, which leads to being unable to meet goals. Start off with manageable, achievable goals and then continue to build up to your ultimate goals, whatever those may be.

Basically, enjoy those treats! Because we deserve them. But try to view eating that cookie or candy or baked good or WHATEVER as a way of enjoying yourself, not consoling yourself.

5 Popular Love Songs That Aren’t Acually Romantic At All

Ah, to be young and in love. Isn’t it great when you hear a love song and the lyrics just seem to describe your feelings perfectly? There’s nothing better!

Well… you may wanna change your mind about cranking the volume too hard on these 5 tunes, because even though most people think they’re romantic, the truth is that they’re just… not.

#1. “Leaving on a Jet Plane” by John Denver

Setting aside the fact that Denver, you know…died on a jet plane, the song was never meant to be a love song. Instead, Denver penned a heartfelt farewell from an unfaithful lover.

And who wants that person to come back, really?

#2. “Always” by Bon Jovi

It starts out all mushy, talking about how the singer will “love you, always” but takes a quick turn into the tragic with lyrics about the bleeding, abandoned heart of a man left behind when his lover moved on with someone else.

#3. “More Than Words” by Extreme

It sounds like a song about telling someone you love them, but singer-songwriter Nuno Bettencourt is quick to point out that it’s actually about how words can’t fix everything, and that “I love you” so often isn’t enough.

“People use it so easily and so lightly that they think you can say that and fix everything, or you can say that and everything’s OK.”

#4. “Here Comes Your Man” by The Pixies

This isn’t a cutesy romance song, like the twanging and purrs would suggest – it’s actually “about winos and hobos traveling on the trains, who die in the California Earthquake,” explained frontman Black Francis back in 1989.

Sexy.

#5. “Got to Get You Into My Life” by The Beatles

You might not believe it, coming from the wholesome Beatles, but Paul McCartney said that fooling “square” parents was the point.

Because the song? Sir Paul said “it’s actually an ode to pot.”

There are plenty of real love songs out there, so I’m sure it won’t take you long to find some great replacements!

Here’s the Mystery Man Voicing Freddie Mercury in ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’

Rami Malek is the talk of the town all around Hollywood thanks to his recent Oscar win for Best Actor, portraying the legendary Freddie Mercury in “Boheminan Rhapsody.” But you’d better believe taking on a role like that took a LOT of hard work learning to sing… and another vocalist.

Marc Martel is a Canadian singer who plays a prominent role in the hit movie Bohemian Rhapsody – but you wouldn’t recognize his face if you passed him on the street. The film relied heavily on Martel’s uncanny ability to mimic Freddie Mercury’s voice in order to get the perfect soundtrack for the film, while still allowing star Rami Malek to portray the Queen vocalist onscreen. Malek’s voice and master recordings of Mercury, who died in 1991, were also used in the film, but Martel played an important part in the process.

Martel is credited in the film with providing “additional vocals”, but he signed a nondisclosure agreement, so he can’t get into too many details about how much his voice was actually featured.

Martel has previously gained notoriety on YouTube for his ability to imitate the iconic singer. His audition tape for Queen drummer Robert Taylor’s tribute band went viral in 2011.

Martel tours with his tribute band Ultimate Queen Celebration and has released an album of Queen cover songs. And though Malek is a bone fide star, Martel’s YouTube videos singing Queen songs have made him a minor celebrity in his own right.

Martel previously fronted a band called Downhere, and it was the bass player in that band that originally commented on his ability to sound like Freddie Mercury. Good thing he spoke up!

Learn how Rami Malek “sunk his teeth” into the role of a lifetime

Rami Malek also got a lot of help from dental technician Chris Lyons, who’s given actors like Meryl Streep and Tilda Swinton their chops. Learn all about about Malek’s teeth transformation:

New Survey Reveals Most People Are More Affection to Their Dogs Than to Their Humans

This isn’t really surprising, especially to dog owners. We humans are getting absolutely obsessed with our furbabies.

A recent survey on Rover.com found that, a lot of folks are far more affectionate and loving (in certain ways) towards their dogs than they are towards their own partners and spouses. According to te survey, nearly half of pet owners revealed they had plans to celebrate this past Valentine’s day with their pet.

Rover surveyed 1450 U.S. adults who are dating or in a relationship and found that 67% confess to gazing lovingly into their pet’s eyes and 33% do this more often with their dog than their spouse or significant other. 25% of dog owners take more pictures with their dog than the humans in their life, 25% spend more money on their dog than their partner, and 50% cuddle with their dog more often than the person they’re dating.

Not only that, but 41% of pet owners claim that they wouldn’t consider dating someone who didn’t get along with their pets and 53% would break up with a current partner if they were allergic to their beloved pets.

It’s not all one-sided, though. Phil Tedeschi, a University of Denver researcher and member of Rover’s Dog People Panel, says that our pooches experience and express empathy when they know we’re in distress.

Which is more than we can say for all significant others out there…

Check out the fun infographics below for more interesting stats on how pet owners treat their cuddle buddies as opposed to the humans they claim to love!

People Share Stories of Times They Got the Help They Needed, and We Can All Learn from Them

While the narrative of the “self-made man” is one that’s been pushed a lot over the last few decades, the fact of the matter is that everyone needs a helping hand now and then. Even the world’s most powerful CEO is helpless if his sports car breaks down on a remote country road. There’s no shame in it, and it’s important that we give people the help they need when they need it, because you never know how much it might mean to the person you’re helping.

These 10 Twitter users shared their personal stories about when they were in dire straits and received a helping hand that they haven’t ever forgotten about.
