People Make Fun of British Accents With These Savage Tweets

Ready to have some fun? In the vein of White People Be Like, the latest Twitter craze targets a more, shall we say, specific group of folks.

British people! More specifically, their accents!

Do the kind British people like this? No!

But we love them and their accents so we have gathered a selection of tweets roasting the way they sound, because we’re treasonous and immature.

1. I Thought They Liked T.

2. Rolls Off the Tongue.

3. British People, Chime in Anytime.

4. These are Fun to Say Out Loud.

5. All Joe King Here.

6. Everything Sounds Like My Fair Lady.

17. Are Thems Fightin’ Words?

18. Sound Advice.

19. Adorable.

20. Okay, Now My Head Hurts.

While it is true we speak the same language, it takes some effort for us Americans to completely understand everything said in a conversation with a Brit.

I’m sure they have no issues understanding Americans at all. We speak with clarity and proper annunciation. Even if they came up with Americans Be Like, we’re pretty tough-skinned.

I say, bring it!

Screenshots Of Entitled People And Their Crazy Demands

People can be very entitled. They may express it differently depending on what they want though. The internet is full of stories of broken friendships, ruined careers, and even divorces over someone else’s extreme rudeness.

The only silver lining we have is that cell phones, messaging apps, and social media now allow us to better capture these behaviors in real-time. Occasionally, we also get to out the culprits and get some vindication.

The screenshots below show that some people really need to read the room!

Weird Manias That Gripped Society Then Disappeared

Mob mentality remains something slightly mysterious, perhaps because we have no real way to understand or control it. There are stories going back centuries about people who, for one reason or another or for no reason at all, collectively lose their sh*t.

Maybe papers have been written on common delusions and the madness of crowds, but none have come to any solid conclusions – which is perhaps what makes these 4 historical manias so fascinating, still.

4. Genital Retraction Syndrome (Koro)

View this post on Instagram

Koro is the fear of the genitals shrinking and retracting into the body. Koro is sometimes referred to as genital retraction syndrome. Cases of this fear have been reported around the world – in Asia, Africa, Europe and the U.S. Females occasionally suffer from a variation of koro in which they believe that their nipples are retracting. Interestingly, koro often appears as an epidemic in which multiple cases are reported simultaneously within a specific geographic area. Symptoms First identified in ancient China, koro almost always follows an identical pattern. The sufferer first experiences a tingling sensation in the genitals, followed by a rapid-onset panic attack. This quickly leads to a sudden and pervasive fear that the genitals are disappearing. In Asia, this fear is almost always accompanied by an imminent fear of death, although this element is often missing from reports in other parts of the world. The sufferer normally asks friends or relatives to physically manipulate his genitals to stop them from retracting, which sometimes leads to injury. The anxiety subsides quickly when a culturally acceptable treatment is used, from exorcism to potions. Causes of Genital Retraction Syndrome Koro has been described as a panic disorder that centers around the genitals. It appears to be heavily influenced by cultural beliefs, which might explain why epidemics are common. For example, in some West African outbreaks, the sufferers believed that, rather than retracting into their bodies, their genitals were being stolen for occult reasons. During the "Burning Times" of medieval Europe, witches were held responsible for genital retractions in the local population. The symptoms subsided when the witches were appeased. #psymantra #psychology #psychologist #psychologie #psychologia #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #mentalillness #koro #quotes #fitness #psychiatry #psychiatrist #genitalretractionsyndrome #anxiety

A post shared by PsyMantra (@psymantra_org) on

“Koro” refers to the irrational fear that your genitalia is shrinking or retracting into the body – and people have suffered in en masse since around 300 BCE.  The syndrome is usually found in Africa and Asia and accompanied by severe anxiety, fear of impending death, or terror at losing one’s sexual ability.

The most recent known outbreak happened in Singapore in 1967, where more than 1000 men tried to stave it off using clamps and pegs.

Women have also been victims, believing their breasts or nipples are disappearing, but it’s more likely to affect men in societies where their worth is determined by their reproductive prowess. Psychologists blame culture today, though in the past, witchcraft has (of course) been seen as the cause.

3. Deadly Dancing Mania (1374)

In the Middle Ages, a dancing plague called choreomania gripped dozens of villages along the Rhine River. Hundreds of villagers leaped, jerked, hopped, and danced to music no one unaffected could hear. They barely ate or slept, just danced until their feet bled and the collapsed from exhaustion, hunger, and dehydration.

It happened again in 1518 when a woman in Strasbourg began dancing. Within a week, her troupe had grown to 34 people, and then within a month, to 400 people. Dozens of people died, dancing themselves into heart attacks, strokes, and exhaustion.

Both times, the “plague” disappeared on its own without explanation.

Historians, psychologists, and scientists have all tried to figure it out. At first, the prevailing theory was a mass psychotic episode brought on by eating molded bread, but as the people were dancing, not convulsing, a new theory is mass psychogenic illness.

Professors like John Waller believe it was sparked by pious fear and depression, as both documented dancing plagues occurred during periods of famine, crop failure, flooding, and other high-stakes catastrophes.

A more recent occurrence in the 1840s, in Madagascar, seems to prove that we’re not done with this phenomenon, yet – nor do we understand how it starts or how to stop it.

2. Motor Hysteria

Historical reports that nunneries in the Middle Ages were rife with “motor hysteria,” a mass psychogenic illness where some women exhibit signs of demonic possession, some act out in sexually disturbing ways, and some even meowed like cats and tried to climb trees.

The strange phenomenon lasted for around 300 years and affected convents across Europe, usually ending with a mass exorcism that put a stop to things.

A prevailing theory as to why is a combination of stress and the religious tradition of trance and possession. Nunneries were not gently places, and many women ended up there unwillingly during the Middle Ages, so they could have acted out their stress in strange ways.

1. Tanganyika Laughter Epidemic (1962)

In 1962, a girl in a Tanganyikan (modern day Tanzanian) boarding school told a joke.

Then, 95 girls started laughing and didn’t stop, forcing the school to shut down fora. full 2 months. The mission-run school existed in a tiny, rural village and started with uncontrollable laughing in just 3 students. It turned into a crying fit, anxiety, the fear of being chased, and occasionally violence when restrained. The symptoms spread quickly, apparently transmitted by contact, and lasted anywhere from a few hours to 16 days.

After more than half the students were infected, the school shut down. 10 days later the disease popped up again in a village 55 miles away. 217 people were afflicted over the course of two months, then the disease continued to spread through the countryside – every new victim had come into contact with one of the girls from the closed school in some way.

There was nothing physically wrong with any of the afflicted – no fever, no convulsions, nothing interesting in their bloodwork. Once again, there was no medical explanation for a very real condition that swept through a population.

I’m going to read more about a few of these, because they really are breaking my brain in the best possible way!

What are your theories? Share them with us in the comments!

Mountain Dew and Doritos Are a Snack Marriage Made in Heaven

You can never go wrong with soda and chips. The sugary, bubbly goodness of your favorite soft drink helps melt away the crunchy, spicy satisfaction from your favorite-flavored chips.

But what if I told you that two industry giants are working melding together into one flavor-packed punch?

That’s right, folks. Mountain Dew and Doritos are joining forces and they’re doing it in one of the most interesting (and potentially amazing) ways possible.

Available as a limited-edition item, Doritos Mountain Dew chips could be the life-saving snack you’ve only dreamt about. Combining the signature citrus sweetness of Mountain Dew with the perfectly constructed crunch of a Doritos chip certainly sounds intriguing. Then again, there have been many instances of two food icons trying to make magic only for it to fall laughably short.

In fact, the two brands have attempted to craft a new concoction before. Back in 2008 and 2014, PepsiCo Inc., which owns Mountain Dew, tried released Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew. Fittingly dubbed “Dewitos”, it definitely sounded better in theory than in practice. I never managed to get my hands on a bottle of the science experiment gone wrong, but I’m not upset.

Unfortunately for some flavor enthusiasts, the new Doritos Mountain Dew chips are not yet available in the United States. Currently, the new snack offering is exclusively sold in Australia. So if you’re fiending for a new flavor to spice up your snack time, try making friends with someone from down under.

Just make sure to bring something to wash it down with. Everyone has a different palette, but maybe our Aussie friends are on to something.

Remember: Don’t knock it till you try it.

Important Steps to Properly Cancel Your Credit Card

If you have a credit card you need to cancel, don’t cut in half and just toss it in the trash. Protect yourself, your identity and your credit score by taking all the steps necessary to close the account permanently.

Here are 6 steps to properly canceling a credit card account.

1. Pay off the balance first.

Many issuers don’t require you do this before closing the account, of course, but if you close it with a zero balance, then you won’t have to remember to do it later.

You can also transfer the balance to a new card–preferably one with a zero interest balance transfers offer.

Update your subscriptions and auto-pays to your new card too.

2. Redeem your rewards.

No time like the present.

Figure out how to use or transfer your rewards and bonuses and enjoy them before they’re gone.

3. Call customer service.

Find the phone number on the back of the card and dial to speak to a representative.

Note that person’s name and verify you have a zero balance. Tell them you are canceling your card.

You’ll have to listen to their retention offer, but confirm you are canceling the card and have them note that the closing is at your request.

4. Write and send a cancellation letter.

Go old school and follow up your phone call with a letter via certified mail including your name, address, phone number, account number and detailing your call with the bank’s representative.

Repeat you want the account noted it was closed at your request and ask for verification you closed it with zero balance. It may sound like overkill but you never know what happens when you hang up the phone with customer service.

Mistakes happen.

5. Get a copy of your credit report.

Review your credit report for free once a year from each of the three credit bureaus (TransUnion, Experian and Equifax) at AnnualCreditReport.com, It will take at least a month for the canceled account to appear.

Make sure it says closed at customer’s request. If it doesn’t, call customer service.

6. Now you can cut up your credit card.

Put it through a shredder or cut it up into little pieces.

Yay!

It’s not necessary, honestly, to cancel a credit card. But do it if there’s a high annual fee and you no longer need the perks from it. You also have to keep an eye on your interest rate. A rate that’s out of line with what else you can get may prompt you to cancel that card.

But, no matter the reason, make sure you follow these steps to make sure you and your future credit are protected.

The Navy is Flushing Millions Down the Drain on New Aircraft Carrier Toilets That Cost $400k to Unclog

You’ve heard the phrase “flushing money down the drain’, right? Well in the case of the U.S. Navy, that’s literally happening.

The military branch’s newest technological marvel, the USS Gerald R. Ford, is as top-of-the-line as they come. The ship features nuclear reactors that enable it to travel for a quarter-century without needing to refuel. It can literally toss planes out of the sky with its electro-magnets.

Yet, for all of its marvelous (and expensive) features, none compares to the ship’s toilet system. Despite all of its high-tech features, the ship’s toilet system is so poorly engineered that it requires powerful acid to completely unclog and flush it out.

As for the cost of the acid flush? Well, let’s just say you might think twice about pulling the handle.

It costs approximately $400,000 to complete the acid flush. And it’s not just a one-time ordeal, either.

According to a report from the Government Accountability Office, the toilet system is a serious nightmare for most people to digest:

The effects of more onerous day-to-day maintenance costs are hard to quantify using available Navy data. For example, the Navy used a brand new toilet and sewage system on the CVN 77 and 78, similar to what is on a commercial aircraft, but increased in scale for a crew of over 4,000 people.

To address unexpected and frequent clogging of the system, the Navy has determined that it needs to acid flush the CVN 77 and 78’s sewage system on a regular basis, which is an unplanned maintenance action for the entire service life of the ship.

According to fleet maintenance officials, while each acid flush costs about $400,000, the Navy has yet to determine how often and for how many ships this action will need to be repeated, making the full cost impact difficult to quantify.

The ship holds more than 4,500 sailors and Marines, so that’s a lot of bathroom breaks. With the lifetime costs of running the ship rising to about $123 billion, it’s about time the navy realizes it has a profound pooping problem.

Hopefully the mess hall serves plenty of fibrous fruits and veggies.

Bon voyage!

A Mom Shared a $9 Paycheck After Working Over 70 Hours as a Server

Working as a server can be thankless. After all, staying on your feet, dealing with rude customers and trying to stay sane can be extremely difficult. It can be even worse when you work almost double the standard workweek. For one mom, putting in 70 hours of work should have led to a promising payday.

Boy was she disappointed.

Anyone who works in the food-service industry can attest to the low hourly wages. But in the case of Austin native Aaliyah Cortez, her recent paycheck showed just how silly the system is.

Let’s let her TikTok post explain:

Despite working just over 70 hours, Cortez ended up netting just $9 after taxes. Her TikTok video revealed she made roughly $150 in hourly wages. If you’re not a math whiz, don’t worry. I did the simple math and her hourly wage is shocking: $2.13.

Still, $150 would have been a reasonable amount to take home. That might cover a couple grocery store runs or even help fill up a few tanks of gas. But by the time medicare, taxes and social security took their respective bites, the waitress was left mostly empty-handed.

Fellow former servers know all too well about the inequitable system.

The bartender and server at a local sports bar luckily received about $700 in tips. And as any experienced server knows, tips can literally make or break your week. However, the overall system reflects a serious issue, at least according to Cortez:

“It’s not right that we have to do this, but I wanted to shed some light on the issue and inform the public about the importance of tipping.

If I had a good two weeks from tips my check will be on the lower side.

At my last restaurant, my checks would come out to be $0.”

While the system may not change overnight, Cortez’s TikTok post certainly sparked some interesting discussions over the equity gap for food-service workers and other employees who rely heavily on tips to boost their income.

Not everyone was sympathetic toward Cortez. After all, the tip money is another expense out of a customer’s pocket.

At the end of the day, a server can’t control how he or she is paid. And restaurants certainly aren’t going to do anything drastic to put more money in an employee’s pocket. So the next time you dine out, don’t forget to tip your server.

Every dollar matters.

The Things You Need to Consider When Jogging With Your Dog

Many dogs enjoy running with their owners and many happily keep up with their humans. Some dogs, though, look like they’re trying way too hard to keep up and don’t look very happy at all. Not that they could tell you. Dragging an unhappy or unsuited dog on a run is, at best, mean to your pet, and, at worst, can have deadly consequences.

While some people say dogs are only good for short energy bursts, others say the long-range exercise is good for them and keeps excess weight off. Before you take your pal on another session around the neighborhood, there are a few factors you should consider.

Here are four things you need to think about when you take your dog with you on a run.

1. The breed of your dog.

Large breeds with long legs are the best breeds suited for keeping up with you for long periods of time. Dogs like these will be your huskies, border collies, labradors, dalmatians and other working type breeds. Greyhounds, pitbulls, beagles and English Setters are good for short bursts of speed like sprinting.

Brachycephalic dogs–dogs with short noses–like bulldogs, pugs, boxers and shih tzus will overheat easily and struggle with breathing, so they shouldn’t ever be taken on runs.

Also consider the length of your dogs legs. Short legged dogs like dachshunds shouldn’t run with you either.

2. How old is your dog?

Neither puppies nor senior dogs should be taken on runs. If your pup’s growth plates aren’t yet closed, extended runs can cause permanent damage. Big breeds take longer to develop too.

Consult your veterinarian before trying to run with your dog. Senior dogs get the same aches and pains as do the rest of us as we age. Consider leaving them at home too.

3. How healthy is your dog?

Take into account your dog’s overall health and consult your veterinarian for breed specific problems before bringing him along on your regular runs.

Like people, your dog should have some warm up time. Also, he’ll need to slowly build up stamina just like you should. Bring along water for him too.

And, don’t take him running after a big meal as it could cause life-threatening problems like Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus Syndrome.

4. What’s the weather like?

Make sure your dog’s coat, breed and paws can handle the outdoor climate. If you think your dog can tolerate what’s going on outside but could use extra protection, you can buy coverings for her body and paws.

And if it’s hot, try to lay the back of your hand on the pavement for at least five seconds. That’s how it will feel to your dog’s paws as you run. Then you can make informed decisions on whether to take her or not.

Finally, check in with your dog (at least as often as you check your Fit-bit). He can’t tell you if he needs a break or a drink. But since you’ve chosen him to be your exercise partner, it’s up to you to make sure he’s getting his needs met too.

Running with your dog can be a fun way to stay in good health. Just make sure your dog is having fun and staying healthy too.

Countries That Actually Have More Than One Capital City

When you think about capitals, you probably think of one major city that serves as the seat of government. Yet, that’s not always the case. There are some countries that have two or even more such cities.

Countries that are formed by merging regions can have mulitple power centers. Or sometimes, cultures can vary across a nation resulting in a split of capital duties.

Here are 8 of these countries that function with two or more capital cities.

1. La Paz and Sucre, Bolivia

Photo Credit: Wikimedia / La Paz

La Paz and Sucre are quite different cities, yet both serve as capital cities in Bolivia.

La Paz is Bolivia’s administrative center. Set up high in the Andes, it attracts tourists from around the world.

Hundreds of miles away, Sucre, surrounded by silver mines, rivals as Bolivia’s constitutional capital city.

2. Santiago and Valparaíso, Chile

Santiago, a modern, bustling city is the official capital.

Less than one hundred miles away, Valparaíso is a colorful cultural center with a boho vibe and houses the legislature.

3. Yamoussoukro and Abidjan, Côte D’Ivoire

Abidjan is the original and functioning capital of Côte D’Ivoire. It’s a vibrant city with art galleries, modern architecture and market districts.

But, President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, who ruled Côte D’Ivoire from 1960 to 1993, made his childhood home and sleepier town of Yamoussoukro a capital too.

4. Prague and Brno, Czech Republic

The official office of the President is in the historic Baroque Prague Castle, yet the Moravian city of Brno houses their Supreme Court.

5. Mbabane and Lobamba, Kingdom of eSwatini

This used to be called Swaziland.

Mbabane is the administrative capital while the ruling royal family mainly lives in a palace in Lobamba.

6. Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, Malaysia

Photo Credit: Flickr / Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpar is the official capital of Malaysia. It’s a large, crowded city packed with rooftop bars, cultural landmarks and big time traffic.

The government also built the more quiet, accessible city of Putrajaya for conducting business.

7. Cetinije and Podgorica, Montenegro

Cetinije served as the center of power for years before Podgorica came into favor after World War II.

Now Centinije is referred to as the Old Royal Capital. The President still uses its Blue Palace as the official residence, but most of the work is done in Podgorica.

8. Amsterdam and The Hague, The Netherlands

Amsterdam is famous for its canals and free-spirited culture. It’s even constitutionally designated as the capital. But all of the administration is done from The Hague.

These are far from the only countries with this kind of administrative setup. But it’s interesting to see how topography, politics and culture are taken into account when establishing seats of power.

So, how did the United States figure this out? We set up a governing district along the vacant banks of the Potomac River and called it Washington D.C. And the rest is US history!
