When Moms Say They “Need a Break” Here’s What They Mean

Being a mom is a hard job, particularly when you have a one (or more!) toddling around. All stages of childhood carry their own difficulties, but it seems the youngest years are the most physically demanding.

One mom took some of her precious alone time to explain exactly what she means when she says she “needs a break.”

It ain’t pretty, but it’s the truth.

Her post starts:

“When I say I need a break.

I’m not saying I don’t love my family.

I’m saying going to the toilet with an audience, every time, can get tiresome.”

Your toddler doesn’t want you out of their sight. That means using the bathroom with your little one babbling about the train he’s trying to show you.

“When I say I need a break.

I’m not saying I wish I didn’t have children.”

It doesn’t help or make us feel any better when someone, who is well-meaning, tells us to appreciate these years…they go by so fast.

That’s not what it feels like and that’s not what we mean. We love our kiddos…more than anything.

That’s why we give them everything we have.

“I’m saying it would be nice to put make up and feel good without prying foundation out of someone’s tiny hand.

When I say I need a break.

I’m not saying I want a holiday – even though one would be nice.

It would be nice to be able to have some alone time to get ready for a special evening out. Or for a little at home pampering.

I remember, back in my toddler-mommy days, when my stylist talking me into buying an expensive deep conditioner for my poor, neglected hair. I laughed because the directions said to leave it in for 10 minutes before rinsing. But I bought it anyway.

My record for leaving it in was two minutes.

Anyway, you can read the rest of the mom’s post over at Love What Matters. It’s a good one, and it reminds us that it’s not selfish AT ALL to want a break.

So moms… take that break any way you can.

You need one!

A Baby Girl Gets to “Ring the Bell” When She Beats Brain Cancer

When Lilian Grace Borden was born, her parents were overjoyed. But soon, it became clear something was amiss. According to a GoFundMe, Lily’s mother, Sharon Borden noticed she wasn’t able to move her limbs normally.

After an MRI, doctors saw a problem with her brain stem. By that time, however, Lily was already in the neonatal intensive care on breathing and feeding tubes and the team at their hospital in Nevada wasn’t sure what they had found. To further investigate what was plaguing Lily, a medical transport to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, California, was arranged.

Said Borden,

“By the time of her next MRI, just days later, the tumor was larger and now ran from her brain stem down her spinal cord to below her shoulders.”

Although the tumor was inoperable and rapidly spreading, a biopsy was completed. The tumor was now an aggressive stage 3-4 malignant glioma.

But a new hope emerged! A targeted chemotherapy for tumors of a certain genetic makeup had just received approved. The family had to act fast if they wanted to save Lily.

After a round of chemotherapy, the go-ahead to receive the new treatment finally came. Lily’s tumor was gone three weeks later, and she got to ring the bell declaring herself cancer-free.

To everyone who has been through this journey with us,this is our big moment with lily! We thank everyone who has been…

Now Lily can get back to the important work of growing up and living an amazing life.

A Deaf Man Adopted a Deaf Puppy and Taught Him Sign Language

A puppy named Emerson was deemed sweet and adoptable by staff at the rescue organization NRF Maine. He was also deaf having contracted the canine parvovirus which caused seizures for him when he was a puppy.

NRF Maine’s Lindsay Powers told Good Morning America,

“Once we got him home from the vet’s office from Florida, we realized he had hearing difficulties.

He doesn’t let it bother him at all, though he’s a typical puppy.”

One by one, all of Emerson’s brothers and sisters were adopted and Emerson still didn’t have a family.

When oh when Am I going to find my forever people foster mom?! I'm such a good, seeet boy! It's not my fault im deaf, it doesn't make me any less perfect I promise!!

Posted by Lindsay Powers on Tuesday, March 12, 2019

But soon after his picture was posted on the group’s Facebook page, Powers received a letter from a deaf man named Nick who was interested in adopting a deaf pup with the hopes of establishing a special bond. “Right off the bat he said, ‘I’m deaf also and I feel like we’d have a good connection.’”

Powers processed the application that day.

Sure enough, Nick and Emerson hit it off immediately.

Good Evening #NFRnation!! Who out there loves a happy ending?? I know we sure do!!So many of you followed our sweet…

Posted by NFR Maine on Sunday, March 17, 2019

An NRF foster mom wrote in another Facebook post,

“When Nick and his Mom walked into the house to meet Emerson, Emerson made a direct line for Nick and sat at his feet.

That’s all it took.

I was sold that this was fate, and these 2 belonged to each other.”

Nick and Emerson are so happy together that Nick created an Instagram account called @nickandemerson to show off the special bond he’d always hoped for.

The duo has so far amassed more than 31,000 followers.

Nick has even taught Emerson sign language for sit, lay down, and come. Videos of the pair’s sign language lessons and tricks are loaded to Instagram.

Rachel, Nick’s mother, calls them the cutest pair.

We couldn’t agree more!

A Woman’s Post About Instagram Culture and Staged Photo Shoots Went Viral

It always seems as if others have these fabulous lives while we sit like lumps on our couches unable to even decide where to get takeout for dinner.

But, remember, we don’t see what goes on behind the scenes to get those enviable shots.

One woman took to Facebook to remind us of this very fact. Jen Flint, artist and mother of six, went to the pool where she witnessed a scenario that made her think about the illusion of the Instagrammable life. Her recount of the events went viral.

While Flint looked on, another mother posed her daughter for a picture she planned to post to social media. After getting the perfect shot, the mom took a phone call. Her daughter begged her to go swimming, but her mother continued with the phone call and ignored her child’s pleas.

Yesterday while at the pool I watched a young Mama and her little daughter enter the pool area dressed in very nice…

Posted by Jen Flint on Wednesday, June 19, 2019

Mother and daughter had arrived at the pool in matching swimsuits.

Yesterday while at the pool I watched a young Mama and her little daughter enter the pool area dressed in very nice coordinating swimming suits.

The mom, with her perfect loose curls tied up in a coordinating scarf, spent the first few minutes talking loudly on her phone to a friend while her daughter stood waiting to get into the pool. Mom ended the phone call and proceeded to spread out pool toys and sunscreen on a matching towel.

Then after finding just the right angle and the right light, Mama pulled out her tripod and took a few selfies with her daughter. Little One asked to get in the pool. Mama said wait and then posed her daughter in front the pool, then going in to the pool and then coming back out of the pool.

The mother set the stage with towels, sunscreen and pool toys. Then she took some selfies with her child. Photo shoot over, the mom hopped on the phone, paying no attention to her daughter who now wanted to play with her in the pool.

Little one smiled big and said “cheese” like she’d done it a million times. Then Mama told her she could play. Little One walked in and swam around for a couple of minutes. Mama called a friend on her phone and began another conversation while Little One politely and repeatedly asked “Mama, can you come in the water with me, please?” She was ignored. “Mama, come play with me?” she asked 4 more times. Mama glanced over at her but never got off the phone. After 10 minutes Mama ended her call, collected the sunscreen that was never applied, the water toys that never touched the water, and then her daughter and left the pool.

Only a few minutes after taking the photos, the mother packed up all the toys, towels and sunscreen, and left the pool with daughter in tow.

I sat there thinking about what I’d witnessed for awhile afterwards. I imagined the photos she took being perfectly edited and posted to social media with a caption like “Pool time with my girly! #Makingmemories“.

Somewhere another Mama is going to be at home with her children, the house a mess from their play, her hair unruly from a day of mothering and her clothes dirty with spit up or peanut butter. She’s going to be tired because she’s spent her day cooking, caring, cleaning and playing with her children. She’s going to look at that photo and she is going to compare herself to the perfect Mama at the pool. The Adversary is going to whisper into her ear “you aren’t good enough… You don’t look like that Mama at the pool… You don’t have money to buy expensive swimming suits like that and you don’t have time to make memories like she is” and that young Mama is going to believe it. She’s going to feel like a failure. Ugh!! She’ll never know that how she spent her time that day was so much better in God’s eyes and in her children’s eyes than that “perfect Mama” at the pool.

What bothered Flint the most was the photo that would be posted on line was exactly the type that would make other mothers feel inadequate in comparison. We tend to create our own stories about what we see in other people’s lives. We can also become obsessed on how we present our lives on social media.

What we see on Social Media isn’t always real. Sometimes and often it’s a complete set-up. It’s staged and filtered and it’s counterfeit.

Sometimes we do see absolutely real photos of vacations and beautiful homes and freshly done hair but it’s only ONE moment. It’s the very best moment out of a whole day spent much like our own. Working, cleaning, and messes…

Perfect moments are fast and fleeting and happen between the natural and real messiness of life.

Mamas, don’t compare yourself. You ARE enough! You are amazing and the very best part is that you are REAL! Your dirty shirt and your messy house and your happy children are real and they are proof that you are doing it right!

Flint ended her post with the message that mothers should resist the urge to compare and to remember Instagram moments are rarely reality. Being a real mother is a rewarding life.

We don’t need Instagram likes and comments to tell us that.

You Can Thank Millennials for America’s Declining Divorce Rate

Who would’ve thought…?

If you’re a GenXer or Xennial like me, you were raised on cautionary tales of relationships and marriage that all included, at one point or another, the stark fact that 50% of all marriages in America ended in divorce.

Many of us chose to get married anyway, and collectively, I’m not sure we’ve made better decisions than our parents did when it comes to life partners.

Millennials, though – the generation after us –  are getting divorced less often than Boomers and my fellow GenXers.

Which is to say, that scary 50% divorce rate statistic?

It is no longer.

According to Bloomberg, divorce rates dropped by 18% between 2008 and 2016. They analyzed data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey and controlled for related factors like age (older people are less likely to get divorced), and even then, the rate dropped by almost 10%.

Baby Boomers, by contrast, divorced at a higher rate than any previous generations – perhaps just because it became less taboo and women became more likely to be able to support themselves financially, neither of which is a bad thing if you ask me.

While millennials are blamed for hurting the economy by not buying homes and choosing not to have children, the fact is, they’re financially more insecure than any American since the Great Depression. They’re weighed down by student debt and staring at high costs of living combined with low wage growth.

So, maybe they just can’t afford to get divorced?

Perhaps, but experts think it’s more likely that they, too, are marrying later in life, spending more time dating people and actually figuring out whether they’ll be a good life partner before pulling the trigger. Statistics show that both factors correlate with lower chances for divorce.

Philip Cohen, the paper’s author, concludes that “the U.S. is progressing toward a system in which marriage is rarer, and more stable, than it was in the past.”

Which is to say, kids today might be getting married less often or waiting longer, but when they do decide to take a trip down the aisle, it’s more often actually forever.

So there you go – one less reason to hate on Millennials today.

Online Exercise Classes To Do With Your Kids

Gyms are closed, kids aren’t in school, and if you live in a similar climate to mine, spring isn’t exactly getting the message. It’s dreary, it’s cold, it’s rainy, and pretty much no one wants to get outside.

We all still need to get a bit of exercise every day, though! It’s good for our mental health, good for our physical health, and not hearing “I’m bored!” for a twenty or thirty-minute stress is also a big positive in anyone’s home.

If you’re looking for ways to keep your family fit and healthy and occupied while in the house, here are 8 online classes to try out for yourself!

8. Moovelee

These videos are for toddlers who need to stretch and move even though they’re stuck in the house – and they’re guided by friendly animated monkeys.

The workouts are based on yoga and meditation practice, as well as some traditional skills like running and stretching. Superhero yoga is a must!

7. Cosmic Kids Yoga

These mindfulness and yoga practices are geared toward kids 3 and up, and the channel offers a variety of videos that should be easy enough to follow along at home.

They’re sorted by age and activity level, and there are also dance videos and brain breaks to add to your daily routine.

6. Yoga Ed

These video yoga workouts are for children and teens and range from 10-30 minutes in length. You can choose options for specific topics like communication and self-awareness, or go for general practices that should cover kids of all ages.

5. Jack Hartmann Music Channel

These fun videos incorporate learning and exercise for kids, and your children are going to love them.

4. Little Sports

These kids’ workout videos are fun, engaging, and easy for kids to follow on their own. The videos are short – around 15 minutes apiece – and teach a variety of exercises like stretching and cardio.

3. Go Noodle

There are so many silly videos to choose from, and they’ll all get your kids up, moving, active, and laughing. You can’t go wrong here!

2. Kidz Bop Dance Along

Dancing is great exercise, and sometimes a familiar, popular song is just what your kids need to get off the couch and get moving.

And you’ve got your headphones, so everyone is good to go!

1. Alo Yoga

This YouTube channel features videos for kids that are zen and calming, with a focus on mindfulness and flexibility. They also utilize fun visuals to help kids understand the practice.

I’m definitely going to try these, even if my toddler does get distracted and wander off halfway through – mama needs yoga time!

A Teenager Opened A Time Capsule Made By Her Family And Friends On Her First Birthday

Does anyone do time capsules thes days? I remember filling one in elementary school, and maybe again right after the turn of the century. I always think we should do more stuff like that, because I know how much people in the present enjoy unearthing relics from the past.

As someone with children, the idea of putting together a time capsule for your child to open when they turn 18 is sentimental and lovely, and I’m so happy we’re getting to read about the girl’s experience opening hers!

Kim Chastain had the idea when her daughter, Grace, turned one. She bought a time capsule and asked friends and family to fill it with whatever they thought Grace would enjoy seeing on her 18th birthday. It was a secret, and Gracie had no idea it existed, Kim told Bored Panda.

So, here’s a cool thing… on Gracie’s 1st birthday, I didn’t know what to get a one year old who had everything she…

Posted by Kim Chastain on Thursday, March 12, 2020

“We’ve moved a couple of times since we did the time capsule but for the last ten years, it has been in the back of a large storage room in our basement buried beneath boxes of books. My kids never go in there because they think it’s creepy, so it went unnoticed all these years.”

When she pulled it out and showed it to Gracie, though, the young woman was excited to go through the contents.

It was full to the brim with the physical proof of how very much she has been loved her entire life.

And, now I’m crying. Again.

The internet has been thrilled to be a part of the process, with the pictures getting over 71,000 reactions and over 100,000 shares.

I’m definitely stealing this idea for my own babies – I think it’s amazing to be able to instill a sense of wonder and respect for where you’ve come from in the next generation.

Have you don’t something like this for your kids? Tell us about it in the comments!

Mom From Japan Makes the Cutest Meals out of Just About Anything

Feeding kids is a soul-crushing undertaking that will break your spirit. Kids eat a LOT, but they go through phases where they’ll only eat certain things, or when what they wanted for dinner is anything except what you’re cooking (and they probably liked that last week).

And so we go to great lengths to not only cook yummy and nutritious foods, but to make them look appealing, too.

At least, I thought I went to great lengths until I saw what this Japanese mom of three was doing with her kid’s lunches!

Etoni Mama’s daughters are 11, 9, and 7, and they are presumably as delighted as the rest of us with these yummy and intricate dishes. The chef has no prior training but she’s definitely a master of character bento, a Japanese lunchbox food style that creates meals that look like people and pop culture characters.

A coworker encouraged her to share her fun and inspiring meals on Instagram, and now people all over the world are impressed. After you take a look at 12 of the most awe-inspiring designs below, you’re going to be a fan, too!
