Stories About When the Quiet Kid in School Immediately Became the Popular Kid

The dynamics of social life in school growing up sure are weird, huh?

Kids went from zero to hero in an instant because of one thing or another that happened in school and then the stories about it spread like wildfire.

Do you remember these good old days about when the quiet kid went to Mr. or Mrs. Popularity in an instant?

AskReddit users shared some pretty interesting stories.

1. He killed it.

“This quiet smart kid ran for student government. he had to give a speech during one of those awkward assemblies where a bunch of 12 year olds nerds practice public speaking but they barely know how to talk into a microphone and no one makes eye contact and everyone politely claps but all the adhd kids are fidgeting like crazy and everyone else is falling asleep.

But then this kid gets up and absolutely slays. his speech was well paced, funny and personal and he called out specific people in our grade in a playful way like “we all know Joe always forgets to bring a pencil to biology lab. If I’m elected president, I’ll have pencils available in every classroom!” instant popularity.”

2. A rippin’ guitar solo.

“At the end of every year in high school we had an “academic convocation” where the whole school would gather in the auditorium and there would be awards handed out to students from each grade such as, most improved, best attendance, etc. Every time they had one of these they would open the convocation up with something entertaining like the cheerleaders doing their routine for example.

My friend Jared who was the quiet metal head happened to be in the most insanely talented band our senior year. Somehow they got to open up our senior years convocation. I was so jealous but also very proud to watch as the quiet kid was ripping a gut busting guitar solo in front of the whole school with everyone, even the teachers, cheering the band on.”

3. He did good.

“Kid was a year younger than me and really awkward (I think he was home schooled almost until the last 4 years)

He joined the track team and was an absolute lunatic sprinter. He was crushing people without much effort.

Went from socially awkward to being all conference sprinter who then got signed to a nice scholarship. Found him on Facebook a couple of years ago and he is married with a nice looking wife and decent job.”

4. That took some balls.

“He asked an incredibly popular but bitchy girl to prom. Before she could say no he booped her in the nose and said “just kidding”.”

5. You never know…

“I always remember a story my dad told me when he was in high school. A quiet boy kept getting bullied by some asshole, much bigger than him. Day in, day out this dude was screwing with this kid.

Kid was smaller in size, very quiet, never bothered anyone. One day he finally got sick of the bully and knocked him the fuck out in one hook, sending him to the hospital. Turns out he was a golden glove boxer.”

6. Here it comes!

“He calmly walked towards a dude that was harassing someone and literally out of nowhere punched him so hard in the face he fainted. And he just walked away…

No teachers saw it and no one ratted him out.”

7. Now he’s popular.

“He offered to tutor calculus to anyone for a dollar an hour. There were as many as 10 of us at his house at any one time. To add to that, his mother was gorgeous.”

8. This happens a lot.

“When the quiet girl lost a lot of weight and was suddenly one of the prettiest girl in the batch. You’d think those only happen in movies.

The best part is no stupid shenanigan ensued, and she remains to be one of the nicest and prettiest people I know. She’s even more popular in college now.”

9. A nice story.

“He went around all sneaking just being nice to everyone and doing favors like copying down homework when people were sick, writing notes fo encouragement, but we all realized he was the best when he was helping people out with physics homework over AIM because we had to submit homework through this jerk online system, and everyone realized all at once that they were saying the same thing: Go ask screenname_69 for help.

Suddenly he was everyone’s friend and instead of just passively ignoring him, we all let him into all of our circles. We voted him prom king and he cried and everyone was so happy.”

10. This is awesome.

“In high school there was a popular asshole classmate who was blocking the doorway to a science class this quiet girl was trying to get into. Dude was just standing in the doorway talking to a friend there.

Quiet girl got so annoyed after he completely ignored her requests to move that she grabbed him by the back of his backpack and pulled him backwards, causing him to fall flat on his butt and shut-up. I still remember him staring blankly at her (along with the rest of the class) as she walked in and took her usual seat in the front of the class.

She was the only one to ever shut the guy up in all the years that anyone knew him. I think someone even wrote that in her yearbook when we were passing them around during senior year.”

11. One day only.

“I was that kid in junior year. The school news team filmed students giving their significant others Valentine’s Day shoutouts, and me, being perennially single, decided to goof off to entertain my friends. I went on and said, and I quote, “I’d like to wish a happy Valentine’s Day to myself, because I’m single…ladies”.

They got a kick out of it, and when it aired, the news team played it for the whole entire school, complete with remixes and everything. For one day, and one day only, I was the most popular kid in school. Even got a few phone numbers out of it!”

12. Quite a story.

“This sounds kinda weird and arrogant but kind of myself. Definitely not the most popular kid at least. I was super quiet and depressed in freshman year and was bullied relentlessly by a junior. One day a junior (let’s call him Jack) and his friends follow me home from school and trys to fight me. I end up breaking his arm in two places and shattering his collar bone.

His friends got it on video. After a two week suspension I got back and everyone was super nice to me, always included me, I got invited to party’s w/ seniors and such. The popular kid who beat me up came back later and was excluded by everyone. One day I’m on the locker room after school and find him sitting alone crying.

We talk for a while and I learn his parents are getting a divorce and he lost his spot on the football team and he’s about to fail several classes. On top of that all of his friends left him including his girlfriend. Essentially he told me he had nothing to live for and was planning on killing himself. I sat with him for hours talking. Eventually he went home and do did I.

Every day after that I’d sit with him at lunch, we hung out occasionally out side of school, and I helped him with a few classes. By his senior year, he’s a regular with my original group of nerds and geeks. He also stopped drinking and smoking too and we’d play dungeon and dragons as a group on the weekends haha.”

13. From the 1970s…

“Quiet dude in high school in the late 1970s. He was awkward and sort of goofy looking, very tall and lanky. One night at a school dance he arrived in the most fashionable disco leisure suit and platform shoes that made him, along with his stylish afro, over 7 feet tall.

Some popular disco song played and he stood in the very center of the gymnasium and expertly executed every dance move that John Travolta ever popularized. A circle of amazed high school admirers grew around him, amazed, and cheering him on.

The song ended and it was like the parting of the sea when he walked from the center of the dance floor back to the sidelines. Nobody imagined this quiet kid had such hidden talent.”

14. A legendary move.

“The teacher said “if you hate the class so much why don’t you leave ?”

He left.”

15. A story about a teacher.

“Not a kid but a teacher. My physics teacher is an awkward, shy man who is constantly drinking coffee to stay alert and is quite jittery. Once in a school assembly we had a basketball competition to lift our spirits and he volunteered.

He was the best of all; he made nearly every shot and after every shot he ran back to high five a friend (once he slipped on his way back but in a cool funny way). He was automatically a hero and everyone chanted his name. He was very happy but attempted to hide his smiles by sipping his coffee.”

Those stories definitely brought back some memories of growing up and the ups and downs of school.

Did you ever witness something like this?

Maybe you were even the kid that this happened to?

Very Strange Laws That You’ve Probably Never Heard Of

I’ve done a little research before and I’ve discovered that there are really strange laws on the books across the country.

Like really weird stuff that you’ve probably never heard of before. Here are 10 rather strange ones that will probably be new to you.

Let’s take a look.

1. Be careful with that WiFi.

Wifi

In Michigan, you can be arrested for leeching WiFi from a restaurant if you’re outside in your car.

It happened to a man in 2007 who wouldn’t buy anything from a cafe, but would sit outside in his car and pick up their wireless signal. Bottom line: in Michigan you can’t use a WiFi signal without authorization.

The man who was arrested had to pay a fine of $450 and do 40 hours of community service, so they’re not really messing around up there.

2. Better be careful…

netflix

We all know a lot of people who share passwords for streaming services with their family and friends. If you do this in Tennessee, you better be careful because it is technically illegal there.

The law is aimed at hackers who steal and sell passwords in bulk.

3. I wish they enforced this!

Elevator

In New York City, it’s on the books that proper etiquette in an elevator requires people to keep their hands crossed, talk to no one, and gaze at the door.

I love it!

4. Okay…

When you can fall asleep at a gas station you're tired.

Try to explain this one to me. In North Dakota, it’s illegal for a person to fall asleep with their shoes on…

You got me on this one

5. I would fight this one!

Weird Science #7

In the great state of Oklahoma, it’s illegal to…wait for it…read a comic book while operating a motor vehicle.

We all need to band together to fight this one!

We’ll put the system on trial!

6. Poor little fellas.

Skunk Encounter

It’s illegal to own a skunk in Tennessee and to transport a skunk over the state line.

So if you were thinking about doing that…you should probably reconsider, okay?

7. That’s no fun!

Snowball

In Provo, Utah, throwing snowballs is illegal. For real!

What are kids supposed to do after a heavy snowfall?

Maybe it’s best to just keep driving if you’re passing through Provo and you get that urge to pull over and start chuckin’ ’em.

8. Whether you like it, or not…

bathtub

In the small town of Barre, Vermont, residents are required by law to bathe every Saturday night, no questions asked.

I wonder how they get around to enforcing this law…hmmmmm…

9. Is that even possible?

1pool underwater salitre 231

In what has to be one of the weirdest laws I’ve ever heard of in my life, it’s illegal to WHISTLE UNDERWATER in West Virginia.

Whatever you saw, Mr. Law…

10. You better start playing, friend.

Scott D. Davis

Ahhhh, Iowa. The heartland. And, apparently, also a place for very weird laws!

Get a load of this one:  if a piano player only has one arm, they must perform for free. I don’t know why (and I don’t know how), but you better believe that it’s on the books.

Pretty darn weird, huh? I know I’d never heard of any of these laws before.

Do you have any strange laws where you live that people aren’t aware of?

There’s a Reason Car Dealerships…Kind of Suck

Just about everyone remembers buying their first car – whether you were fortunate enough to get a brand new one or had to settle for a junker with no AC and only one functional door (R.I.P. Leona). Having a car allows you to go where you want, when you want. It’s no wonder it’s such a rite of passage for young people everywhere. Cars represent mobility, adulthood, responsibility, and that most American value of all – freedom.

Unfortunately, while owning a car is one of the ultimate expressions of freedom, buying a car is pretty much exactly the opposite!

As just about anyone who’s ever bought a car could tell you, it’s a lengthy, complicated process with tons of paperwork that often ends in buyer’s remorse. Haggling over prices with pesky sales staff who won’t leave you alone is another irritating part of the process that a lot of people would prefer to avoid. One study found that nearly three-quarters of auto buyers would prefer to purchase their car entirely online, citing the wait time at dealerships as their biggest complaint.

Another survey by Autotrader was even more damning, as only 17 out of over 4,000 people surveyed said they like the current sales method.

So if there’s such strong agreement amongst buyers that the dealership model is horrible, then why is it that the vast majority of us still end up having to buy our cars from our local car dealership?

While online retailers have certainly made a dent in the market, dealerships still dominate the market. To understand why, it’s important to first learn how the current model came to be in the first place.

Back when Ford first started making cars, they were sold from the factory. Sales happened right out of a showroom in the factory; when a customer bought a car, the salesman created a build order for the car to be assembled.

As cars became more popular and more accessible to the masses, car manufacturers had to either open up showrooms around the country (and incur a ton of costs) or farm out the process to someone else.

Business is business, and creating franchised dealerships who were responsible for their own costs was the obvious choice.

One argument that dealerships like to make is that customers are better served by a local business that knows the community.

To an extent, they’re right – local sellers are more likely to be aware of regional laws and weather/terrain considerations that could inform your decision when selecting a vehicle.

Car dealerships are also regular sponsors of community organizations, little league teams, charity events, and more.

Unfortunately, dealership associations also funnel a good deal of money to state and federal lawmakers in order to ensure their stranglehold on the marketplace.

This is perhaps the biggest reason that, despite the aforementioned customer surveys stating how much people hate dealerships, we’re still forced to use them almost exclusively!

The state of Texas, for instance, has some pretty tight legislation preventing manufacturers from selling directly to customers.

That’s not to say that nobody’s ever tried – both Saturn and Ford have tried versions of a direct sales model in the past with disappointing results.

Saturn attempted to do “fixed-price” sales, while Ford actually tried to open up several stores. While mismanagement was certainly also a factor in the demise of these ventures, disputes with dealership associations over pricing and sales played a pretty large role as well.

More recently, electric car manufacturer Tesla has been able to circumvent some of the laws preventing direct sales by arguing that their vehicles are still a niche product that requires a highly knowledgeable sales staff to properly walk customers through the features of their new purchase.

While this argument has generally worked for them so far, they’ve still seen their share of opposition from dealerships.

All this effort is to keep their business as deliberately non-transparent as possible because less informed customers are much easier to take advantage of. While car ads often feature a suggested retail price, the price you actually get from a dealer can vary wildly. The internet has also attempted to provide solutions to this information gap, but professors at Harvard Business School found that even these can be pretty inconsistent from one service to the next.

As a matter of fact, despite their obvious business and negotiating acumen, even these professors characterized their car buying experiences in a pretty negative light.

While all of this sounds pretty frustrating, there is some hope for the future.

Those aforementioned Harvard Business School professors feel that the current issue is that incentives between manufacturers and dealers are poorly aligned. While manufacturers want to create brand/customer loyalty for years to come, dealers only really care about selling a car today.

Instead, the professors imagined cars being owned on a subscription model, possibly based on mileage used – similar to how we calculate rates for cloud computing services today. Dealerships would be responsible for maintenance, but customers would be responsible for the insurance in order to motivate safe driving.

In this way, reluctant buyers get some flexibility, dealerships don’t go obsolete, and manufacturers get to create a lasting sense of brand loyalty.

It could be a beautiful future!

This is Why GMOs Aren’t As Scary As They Sound

You’ve probably heard the term “GMO” before, probably in some debate about the future of food. There’s also a good chance that wherever you heard the term, it was used as a negative – indicating some kind of Franken-food that really shouldn’t be consumed by humans. “GMO” stands for “Genetically Modified Organism,” sometimes also referred to as GE-crops (Genetically Engineered). Essentially, it means that the plant in question has had its DNA altered in a controlled way.

There’s a lot of misinformation out there on both sides of the GMO picket line, and it’s hard to know what’s the real story with them. That’s why we’re here to set the record straight (or die trying).

What Is a GMO?

If we consider genetic modification as a general human intervention upon the genetic traits of a plant, then most organized agriculture could fall under that umbrella. Virtually every crop we eat today is a distant memory of the original plant it came from. Farmers have selectively bred and cross-bred plants for centuries to create new varieties of crops that are hardier or tastier (or both), and these techniques could be considered a rudimentary form of genetic modification.

That said, our current understanding of GMOs (and the definition this article will focus on) has to do with direct human intervention to a plant’s DNA at the molecular level. There are several ways to do it, but the process essentially involves creating a break in the DNA, inserting the desired gene characteristics from another organism, and then repairing the cell.

One of the most famous applications of GMO technology has been Bt corn. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a bacteria which produces a crystalline protein which allows it to act as an insecticide. Advances in molecular biology eventually made it possible to insert the gene that produces that protein into food crops like corn, making them naturally pest-resistant.

GMO Safety and Advantages

While all of this might sound pretty scary, it’s actually totally harmless to us. According to Bill Nye, everyone’s favorite Science Guy, “It sounds like some toxic chemical, but actually, it’s a protein – a protein that doesn’t affect you and me, but it does corn borers, for example.”

It turns out that a lot of the opposition to GMOs is fueled by studies which have since been debunked for having serious flaws in their research/methodology. One famous study which reportedly found an increased risk of tumors in rats from GMO consumption was later retracted due to flaws in its design. Another study, which linked GMOs to gluten disorders, was publicly challenged by The Celiac Disease Foundation.

Most scientists today agree that GMOs are generally safe. There is even a hefty report, summarizing 2 years of analysis of roughly 900 scientific journal articles, which concludes that not only are GM crops safe, they are actually improving human health by increasing nutritional value and reducing insecticide poisoning.

Those last points are actually very important to consider when telling the tale of GMOs, along with how GM crops can increase net yields of crops in order to potentially feed millions of people who are currently hungry. GM crops can also be enriched to provide better nutrition, such as the beta-carotene enriched “Golden Rice” that’s combating vitamin A deficiency in developing nations – a problem which the World Health Organization cites as the leading cause of preventable blindness in children.

The use of disease and pest-resistant GMOs can also help save farmers’ livelihoods, as it did for Hawaiian papaya farmers in the late 1990s when Papaya Ring Spot Virus (PRSV) threatened to wipe out the whole industry until GM papayas saved the day.

The True Dangers of GMOs

Author McKay Jenkins, who has spent several years researching the issue of GMOs and wrote a book on them, says that most opponents are missing the mark on the very real danger that GMOs do empower: an unsustainable system of industrial agriculture.

Take, for instance, the company most famous for selling GMOs: Monsanto. They’re notorious for creating Agent Orange, a chemical weapon used by the U.S. military to clear thick jungles during the Vietnam War and also caused horrible birth defects in generations of Vietnamese people.

Monsanto also made the news for creating single-use seeds that force farmers to have to buy new seeds every year, even winning the right to sue farmers who try to re-use the previous year’s seeds. If that wasn’t enough, Monsanto also dominates the global seed market to the point that they can set the prices, and their massive wealth has bought enough influence in Washington to ensure that most government subsidies (which make certain crops more profitable for farmers to grow) go to crops that Monsanto has cornered the market on.

These crops, such as corn and soybean, are grown in massive, monoculture farms that often utilize really unsustainable farming techniques. This is the area where the GMO debate should be focused, says Jenkins:

I think GMOs have gotten a lot of attention because they elicit a visceral fear from people, but really we have a lot of other agricultural problems that predate GMOs. If you think about factory farming or fossil fuels or toxic chemicals or soil loss — those things all existed before GMOs, and GMOs just scaled them up.

GMOs make it so much easier to produce the kinds of crops that are essential for making nutritionally-poor, processed food. They empower the industrial food system to continue on as it has for decades – a problem that numerous documentaries have addressed by illustrating how the traditional industrial approach to food creates all sorts of horrifying problems like the ones Jenkins mentioned.

It could also be argued that GM crops indirectly contribute to the rise of diet-related illnesses like obesity and diabetes by allowing producers to make unhealthy foods at a price and volume that’s simply too hard for average consumers to ignore.

Breaking It All Down

Ultimately, GM technology is just a tool. Just as a weapon can be used to protect or to destroy, GMOs aren’t inherently evil on their own. When used properly, they can help eliminate hunger and alleviate nutritional deficiencies for millions of people worldwide. They’ll also be an integral part of feeding the world going forward – a major challenge considering how populations are skyrocketing while arable land is declining.

On the other hand, they can also be used irresponsibly to create environmental issues and encourage industries that are creating health epidemics with their products. They can also be utilized to give an unscrupulous advantage to large corporations, squeezing out small, independent farmers in the process. While generally recognized as safe for consumption, it’s these aspects of GMOs that make them potentially dangerous.

The best way to combat these problems is to get informed and take action. Simply boycotting all GMOs isn’t the best solution, since a lot of smaller farms that are otherwise entirely respectable might be growing them too. Instead, find out which producers are using unsustainable/unethical growing practices, and stop buying from them.

It also helps to eat less junk/fast food. Not only does it take money away from producers who abuse GMO technology, it’s also way better for your overall health.

Students Did a Dance Routine to ‘Uptown Funk’ but a 60-Year-Old Teacher Stole the Show

This is what I’m talking about, right here!

I only hope I can move like this when I’m 60-years-old. You’ll see what I’m talking about in a minute.

Shirley Clements was getting ready to retire at the age of 60 a few years ago from the school she taught at in Canada. Clements decided she’d go out on a very high note and she performed a hip-hop dance routine with her students that was seriously mind-blowing.

You won’t be surprised to learn that Clements was a dance teacher in the Vancouver area.

It’ll make much more sense when you watch the video at the end of this article.

The performance was part of the Outbreak dance competition that Clements founded almost two decades before she retired.

And for the finale: oh, Clements didn’t do much besides SPINNING ON HER FREAKING HEAD on the floor.

She reminded of Ozone and Turbo from the classic 1980s movie Breakin’.

Here’s the whole video of Shirley Clements absolutely killing it with her students. Be sure to watch the whole thing because you won’t want to miss a second of this performance.

The video has more than 4 million views on YouTube, and for good reason.

That’s wonderful, don’t you think?!?! What a badass!

I, for one, loved this video.

What about you?

Have you ever cut a rug with someone a lot older than you who ended up being a great dancer?

Tell us about it in the comments!

Mister Rogers Loved Farting in Public, According to His Widow

As if you didn’t already have enough reasons to already love the late Fred Rogers, here’s another one.

Rogers passed away in 2003 at the age of 74 and according to his widow Joanne, Fred was a fan of farting in public. He especially liked to do this when an event or a party was…shall we say, boring or dull.

She said, “He would just raise one cheek and he would look at me and smile.”

Was the man an American treasure, or what? Joanne also said that Fred enjoyed dirty jokes and when the film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was going to be made, she only had one request: that they not make her late husband out to be a saint.

Fred proposed to Joanne when they were both 24-years-old…and he did it in a letter.

Joanne said she the only keepsakes she kept from her late husband are the letters they exchanged when they lived far apart early in their courtship. She keeps them in a tote bag by her favorite chair so she can read any of the letters whenever she wants to.

Fred and Joanne Rogers were married for more than 50 years and raised two songs together. Joanne is now 91-years-old.

In case you haven’t seen the film based on his life starring Tom Hanks yet, here is the trailer to refresh your memory.

We sure miss Fred Rogers!

How about you? What are some of your favorite Mister Rogers memories?

Please share them with us in the comments!
